I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called,1Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ δέσμιος ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι τῆς κλήσεως ἧς ἐκλήθητε
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,2μετὰ πάσης ταπεινοφροσύνης καὶ πραΰτητος μετὰ μακροθυμίας ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων ἐν ἀγάπῃ
making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.3σπουδάζοντες τηρεῖν τὴν ἑνότητα τοῦ Πνεύματος ἐν τῷ συνδέσμῳ τῆς εἰρήνης
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling,4ἓν σῶμα καὶ ἓν Πνεῦμα καθὼς καὶ ἐκλήθητε ἐν μιᾷ ἐλπίδι τῆς κλήσεως ὑμῶν
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,5εἷς Κύριος μία πίστις ἓν βάπτισμα
one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 6εἷς Θεὸς καὶ Πατὴρ πάντων ἐπὶ πάντων καὶ διὰ πάντων καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.7Ἑνὶ δὲ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Therefore it says, "When he ascended on high he captured captives; he gave gifts to men." 8διὸ λέγει Ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος ᾐχμαλώτευσεν αἰχμαλωσίαν (καὶ) ἔδωκεν δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
Now what is the meaning of "he ascended," except that he also descended to the lower regions, namely, the earth?9Τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς
He, the very one who descended, is also the one who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things.10 καταβὰς αὐτός ἐστιν καὶ ἀναβὰς ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὰ πάντα
It was he who gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,11Καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκεν τοὺς μὲν ἀποστόλους τοὺς δὲ προφήτας τοὺς δὲ εὐαγγελιστάς τοὺς δὲ ποιμένας καὶ διδασκάλους
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, that is, to build up the body of Christ,12πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων εἰς ἔργον διακονίας εἰς οἰκοδομὴν τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God--a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ's full stature.13μέχρι καταντήσωμεν οἱ πάντες εἰς τὴν ἑνότητα τῆς πίστεως καὶ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
So we are no longer to be children, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes.14ἵνα μηκέτι ὦμεν νήπιοι κλυδωνιζόμενοι καὶ περιφερόμενοι παντὶ ἀνέμῳ τῆς διδασκαλίας ἐν τῇ κυβείᾳ* τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐν πανουργίᾳ πρὸς τὴν μεθοδείαν τῆς πλάνης
But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head.15ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ αὐξήσωμεν εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα ὅς ἐστιν κεφαλή Χριστός
From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. As each one does its part, the body grows in love.
So I say this, and insist in the Lord, that you no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.17Τοῦτο οὖν λέγω καὶ μαρτύρομαι ἐν Κυρίῳ μηκέτι ὑμᾶς περιπατεῖν καθὼς καὶ τὰ ἔθνη περιπατεῖ ἐν ματαιότητι τοῦ νοὸς αὐτῶν
They are darkened in their understanding, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.18ἐσκοτωμένοι τῇ διανοίᾳ ὄντες ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν ἄγνοιαν τὴν οὖσαν ἐν αὐτοῖς διὰ τὴν πώρωσιν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν
Because they are callous, they have given themselves over to indecency for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.19οἵτινες ἀπηλγηκότες ἑαυτοὺς παρέδωκαν τῇ ἀσελγείᾳ εἰς ἐργασίαν ἀκαθαρσίας πάσης ἐν πλεονεξίᾳ
But you did not learn about Christ like this,20Ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἐμάθετε τὸν Χριστόν
if indeed you heard about him and were taught in him, just as the truth is in Jesus.21εἴ γε αὐτὸν ἠκούσατε καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε καθώς ἐστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires,22ἀποθέσθαι ὑμᾶς κατὰ τὴν προτέραν ἀναστροφὴν τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν φθειρόμενον κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τῆς ἀπάτης
to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,23ἀνανεοῦσθαι δὲ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ νοὸς ὑμῶν
and to put on the new man who has been created in God's image--in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth. 24καὶ ἐνδύσασθαι τὸν καινὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν κατὰ Θεὸν κτισθέντα ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ὁσιότητι τῆς ἀληθείας
Therefore, having laid aside falsehood, each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.25Διὸ ἀποθέμενοι τὸ ψεῦδος λαλεῖτε ἀλήθειαν ἕκαστος μετὰ τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐσμὲν ἀλλήλων μέλη
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on the cause of your anger.26Ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε ἥλιος μὴ ἐπιδυέτω ἐπὶ [τῷ] παροργισμῷ ὑμῶν
Do not give the devil an opportunity.27μηδὲ δίδοτε τόπον τῷ διαβόλῳ
The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.28 κλέπτων μηκέτι κλεπτέτω μᾶλλον δὲ κοπιάτω ἐργαζόμενος ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσὶν τὸ ἀγαθόν ἵνα ἔχῃ μεταδιδόναι τῷ χρείαν ἔχοντι
You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need, that it may give grace to those who hear.29Πᾶς λόγος σαπρὸς ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν μὴ ἐκπορευέσθω ἀλλὰ εἴ τις ἀγαθὸς πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν τῆς χρείας ἵνα δῷ χάριν τοῖς ἀκούουσιν
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.30Καὶ μὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἐσφραγίσθητε εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπολυτρώσεως
You must put away every kind of bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and evil, slanderous talk.31Πᾶσα πικρία καὶ θυμὸς καὶ ὀργὴ καὶ κραυγὴ καὶ βλασφημία ἀρθήτω ἀφ’ ὑμῶν σὺν πάσῃ κακίᾳ
Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.
