1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

1Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ

2After agreeing with the workers on one denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard.

2συμφωνήσας δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ

3When he went out about nine in the morning, he saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.

3Καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς

4To those men he said, You also go to my vineyard, and I'll give you whatever is right.' So off they went.

4καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν

5About noon and at three, he went out again and did the same thing.

5οἱ δὲ ἀπῆλθον Πάλιν δὲ ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως

6Then about five he went and found others standing around, and said to them, Why have you been standing here all day doing nothing?'

6Περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί

7"Because no one hired us,' they said to him. "'You also go to my vineyard,' he told them.

7Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ⧼καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον λήψεσθε⧽

8When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his foreman, Call the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last and ending with the first.'

8Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ Κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος ‹αὐτοῖς› τὸν μισθόν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων

9"When those who were hired about five came, they each received one denarius.

9Καὶ* ἐλθόντες οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον

10So when the first ones came, they assumed they would get more, but they also received a denarius each.

10καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί

11When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner:

11Λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου

12These last men put in one hour, and you made them equal to us who bore the burden of the day and the burning heat!'

12λέγοντες Οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν καὶ ἴσους αὐτοὺς ἡμῖν ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα

13"He replied to one of them, Friend, I'm doing you no wrong. Didn't you agree with me on a denarius?

13Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἑταῖρε οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι

14Take what's yours and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.

14ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί

15Don't I have the right to do what I want with my business? Are you jealous because I'm generous?'

15[ἢ] οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ὃ θέλω ποιῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς ἢ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι

16"So the last will be first, and the first last."

16Οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι ⧼πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοί ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί⧽

17While going up to Jerusalem, Jesus took the 12 disciples aside privately and said to them on the way:

17‹Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα ‹μαθητὰς› κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς

18"Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death.

18Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν 〈εἰς〉 θανάτῳ*

19Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and He will be resurrected on the third day."

19καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται

20Then the mother of Zebedee's sons approached Him with her sons. She knelt down to ask Him for something.

20Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ

21"What do you want?" He asked her." Promise," she said to Him, "that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right and the other on Your left, in Your kingdom."

21Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Τί θέλεις Λέγει αὐτῷ Εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν ‹σου› καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου

22But Jesus answered, "You don't know what you're asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" " We are able," they said to Him.

22Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν ⧼ἢ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι⧽ Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Δυνάμεθα

23He told them, "You will indeed drink My cup. But to sit at My right and left is not Mine to give; instead, it belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by My Father."

23Λέγει αὐτοῖς Τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε ⧼βάπτισμα ὃ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθήσεσθε⧽ τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν τοῦτο δοῦναι ἀλλ’ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου

24When the 10 disciples heard this, they became indignant with the two brothers.

24Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν

25But Jesus called them over and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and the men of high position exercise power over them.

25ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν

26It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

26οὐχ οὕτως ἔσται* ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος

27and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave;

27καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος

28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life--a ransom for many."

28ὥσπερ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν

29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.

29Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς

30There were two blind men sitting by the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"

30καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ

31The crowd told them to keep quiet, but they cried out all the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"

31Ὁ δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ

32Jesus stopped, called them, and said, "What do you want Me to do for you?""

32Καὶ στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν Τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν

33Lord," they said to Him, "open our eyes!"

33Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν

34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they could see, and they followed Him.

34Σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ
