Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?1Τί οὖν τὸ περισσὸν τοῦ Ἰουδαίου τίς ὠφέλεια τῆς περιτομῆς
Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.2πολὺ κατὰ πάντα τρόπον πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ ὅτι ἐπιστεύθησαν τὰ λόγια τοῦ Θεοῦ
What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?3Τί γάρ εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες μὴ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ Θεοῦ καταργήσει
By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”4μὴ γένοιτο γινέσθω δὲ Θεὸς ἀληθής πᾶς δὲ ἄνθρωπος ψεύστης καθὼς* γέγραπται Ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου καὶ νικήσεις ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε
But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)5Εἰ δὲ ἀδικία ἡμῶν Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην συνίστησιν τί ἐροῦμεν μὴ ἄδικος Θεὸς ἐπιφέρων τὴν ὀργήν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον λέγω
By no means! For then how could God judge the world?6μὴ γένοιτο ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον
But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner?7εἰ δὲ ἀλήθεια τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ ψεύσματι ἐπερίσσευσεν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ τί ἔτι κἀγὼ ὡς ἁμαρτωλὸς κρίνομαι
And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.8καὶ μὴ καθὼς βλασφημούμεθα καὶ καθώς φασίν τινες ἡμᾶς λέγειν ὅτι Ποιήσωμεν τὰ κακὰ ἵνα ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθά ὧν τὸ κρίμα ἔνδικόν ἐστιν
What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin,9Τί οὖν προεχόμεθα οὐ πάντως προῃτιασάμεθα γὰρ Ἰουδαίους τε καὶ Ἕλληνας πάντας ὑφ’ ἁμαρτίαν εἶναι
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;10καθὼς γέγραπται ὅτι Οὐκ ἔστιν δίκαιος οὐδὲ εἷς
no one understands; no one seeks for God.11οὐκ ἔστιν συνίων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκζητῶν τὸν Θεόν
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”12πάντες ἐξέκλιναν ἅμα ἠχρεώθησαν οὐκ ἔστιν ποιῶν χρηστότητα οὐκ ἔστιν ἕως ἑνός
“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”13τάφος ἀνεῳγμένος λάρυγξ αὐτῶν ταῖς γλώσσαις αὐτῶν ἐδολιοῦσαν ἰὸς ἀσπίδων ὑπὸ τὰ χείλη αὐτῶν
“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”14ὧν τὸ στόμα ἀρᾶς καὶ πικρίας γέμει
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;15ὀξεῖς οἱ πόδες αὐτῶν ἐκχέαι αἷμα
in their paths are ruin and misery,16σύντριμμα καὶ ταλαιπωρία ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν
and the way of peace they have not known.”17καὶ ὁδὸν εἰρήνης οὐκ ἔγνωσαν
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”18οὐκ ἔστιν φόβος Θεοῦ ἀπέναντι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν
Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.19Οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι ὅσα νόμος λέγει τοῖς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ λαλεῖ ἵνα πᾶν στόμα φραγῇ καὶ ὑπόδικος γένηται πᾶς κόσμος τῷ Θεῷ
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.20διότι ἐξ ἔργων νόμου οὐ δικαιωθήσεται πᾶσα σὰρξ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ διὰ γὰρ νόμου ἐπίγνωσις ἁμαρτίας
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—21Νυνὶ δὲ χωρὶς νόμου δικαιοσύνη Θεοῦ πεφανέρωται μαρτυρουμένη ὑπὸ τοῦ νόμου καὶ τῶν προφητῶν
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:22δικαιοσύνη δὲ Θεοῦ διὰ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς πάντας τοὺς πιστεύοντας οὐ γάρ ἐστιν διαστολή
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,23πάντες γὰρ ἥμαρτον καὶ ὑστεροῦνται τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,24δικαιούμενοι δωρεὰν τῇ αὐτοῦ χάριτι διὰ τῆς ἀπολυτρώσεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.25ὃν προέθετο Θεὸς ἱλαστήριον διὰ [τῆς] πίστεως ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ αἵματι εἰς ἔνδειξιν τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ διὰ τὴν πάρεσιν τῶν προγεγονότων ἁμαρτημάτων ἐν τῇ ἀνοχῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ
It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.26πρὸς τὴν ἔνδειξιν τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν δίκαιον καὶ δικαιοῦντα τὸν ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ
Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.27Ποῦ οὖν καύχησις ἐξεκλείσθη διὰ ποίου νόμου τῶν ἔργων οὐχί ἀλλὰ διὰ νόμου πίστεως
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.28λογιζόμεθα γὰρ δικαιοῦσθαι πίστει ἄνθρωπον χωρὶς ἔργων νόμου
Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,29 Ἰουδαίων Θεὸς μόνον οὐχὶ καὶ ἐθνῶν ναὶ καὶ ἐθνῶν
since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.30εἴπερ εἷς Θεός ὃς δικαιώσει περιτομὴν ἐκ πίστεως καὶ ἀκροβυστίαν διὰ τῆς πίστεως
Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.31Νόμον οὖν καταργοῦμεν διὰ τῆς πίστεως μὴ γένοιτο ἀλλὰ νόμον ἱστάνομεν
