The Offering of Isaac

Some time later

Years had passed since Isaac’s birth and the departure of Hagar and Ishmael. Isaac had grown, and Abraham continued to walk under God’s covenant promises.

Gen 40:1 Some time later, the king’s cupbearer and baker…
Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…

God tested Abraham

God placed Abraham’s faith under severe trial, not to discover what Abraham would do, but to reveal and strengthen his obedience. The command that follows would test whether Abraham trusted God’s promise through Isaac above all else.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Psa 66:10 For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us…

and said to him, “Abraham!”

God addressed Abraham personally, as He had throughout Abraham’s calling and covenant relationship with Him. The summons prepared Abraham for a command unlike any he had received before.

Gen 46:2 And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision:…
Exo 3:4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,…
Act 9:4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him,…

“Here I am,” he answered.

Abraham responded with immediate attentiveness and readiness. His answer shows a willing heart before he knew what God would require.

1Sa 3:4-5 Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered…
Gen 31:11 In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’…
Isa 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying…

“Take your son,” God said,

God addresses Abraham personally, making the command unmistakably costly.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Jas 2:21 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…

“your only son Isaac,

Isaac alone was the promised heir through whom God’s covenant with Abraham would continue, though Ishmael was also Abraham’s son.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
1Jn 4:9 This is how God’s love was revealed among us: …

whom you love,

The depth of Abraham’s love for Isaac heightens the severity of the test. Isaac was the long-awaited son born according to God’s promise.

Mrk 12:6 Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them.…
Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved…

and go to the land of Moriah.

Moriah later became associated with the site of the temple in Jerusalem, a central place of sacrifice and worship.

2Ch 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD…
1Ch 21:18-30 Then the angel of the LORD ordered Gad to tell David to go up…

Offer him there as a burnt offering

Abraham is commanded to surrender completely the son through whom God had promised to build a great nation. God was testing Abraham’s faith, not approving human sacrifice; He would provide a substitute.

Lev 1:3-9 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,…
Exo 29:18 Then burn the entire ram on the altar; it is a burnt offering…

on one of the mountains,

The exact place remained undisclosed until Abraham obeyed and began the journey.

Mat 17:1 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John…
Exo 19:2-3 After they had set out from Rephidim, they entered…

which I will show you.”

Abraham was called to trust God’s direction and His promise concerning Isaac, even when the command appeared impossible to reconcile with what God had said.

Gen 12:1 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country…
Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place…

So Abraham got up early the next morning,

Abraham responded without delay to God’s command, showing settled faith even as he faced the loss of his promised son.

Gen 21:14 Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread…
Gen 20:8 Early the next morning Abimelech got up…
Exo 24:4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD.…

saddled his donkey,

He made the necessary preparations for the journey and carried what would be needed for the offering.

Num 22:21 So in the morning Balaam got up, saddled his donkey…
Jdg 19:10 But the man was unwilling to spend the night.…
1Ki 13:13 So the prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.”…

and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac.

The servants accompanied them for the journey, while Isaac remained the central figure in the test God had given Abraham.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Mat 17:1 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John…
Mrk 14:33 He took with Him Peter, James, and John,…

He split the wood for a burnt offering

Abraham personally prepared for the sacrifice, leaving no indication that he expected to avoid obedience.

1Ki 18:33 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull…
Lev 1:7-8 The sons of Aaron the priest shall put a fire on the altar…
Lev 6:12 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning;…

and set out for the place God had designated.

God directed Abraham to Mount Moriah, where He would later provide a substitute for Isaac and reveal that He does not require Abraham to complete the sacrifice.

Deu 12:5 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…
Deu 12:11 then the LORD your God will choose a dwelling for His Name.…
Gen 12:4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him…

On the third day

Abraham’s extended journey gave full weight to his obedience as he continued toward the sacrifice God had commanded. The third day also anticipates the pattern of God bringing life and deliverance after apparent loss, fulfilled supremely in Christ’s resurrection.

Exo 19:11 and be prepared by the third day, for on the third day…
Hos 6:2 After two days He will revive us; on the third day…
1Co 15:4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day…

Abraham looked up

Reaching the appointed time, Abraham recognized the destination God had shown him and proceeded in trusting obedience.

Gen 18:2 And Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.…
Gen 24:63 Early in the evening, Isaac went out to the field…
Mat 17:8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

and saw the place

Mount Moriah later became the site associated with Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem, making it central to Israel’s worship and sacrificial system. Abraham’s offering of Isaac foreshadowed God’s provision of the greater sacrifice.

2Ch 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD…
Deu 12:5 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…
Exo 3:5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals”…

in the distance.

The visible destination marked the final stage of Abraham’s costly journey of faith, as he approached the place where God would test him and provide a substitute.

Heb 11:13 All these people died in faith, without having received…
Deu 34:1-4 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo,…
Isa 33:17 Your eyes will see the King in His beauty.…

“Stay here with the donkey,”

Abraham left the servants and supplies behind as he and Isaac approached the place God had shown him. The servants could accompany the journey but not the act of sacrifice, which Abraham was called to perform in obedience to God.

Mat 26:36 Then Jesus went with His disciples to Gethsemane,…
Mrk 14:32 Then they came to a place called Gethsemane,…

Abraham told his servants.

Their presence reflects the size and resources of Abraham’s household, yet they were not given the full details of God’s command. Abraham carried the responsibility of acting as Isaac’s father and as the one God had directed.

Gen 24:2-4 So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household…
Gen 18:6-8 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…

“The boy and I will go over there to worship,

Isaac was old enough to travel, carry wood, and understand that an offering was being prepared. Abraham described the sacrifice as worship, recognizing that obedience to God was at the center of the journey.

Exo 3:12 “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be…”…
Exo 24:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD”…
1Sa 1:3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city…

and then we will return to you.”

Abraham expected to return with Isaac, trusting God to preserve the son through whom He had promised to continue the covenant. Though he intended to obey the command to offer Isaac, he believed God would provide a way for His promise to stand.

Exo 24:14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us…
Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Rom 4:20-21 Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God…

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering

Abraham made the necessary preparations for the sacrifice God had commanded, carrying out the instructions without delay.

Lev 1:7-8 The sons of Aaron the priest shall put a fire on the altar…
Lev 6:12-13 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning;…

and placed it on his son Isaac.

Isaac bore the wood as they climbed the mountain, foreshadowing Christ bearing the instrument of His own sacrifice.

Jhn 19:17 Carrying His own cross, He went out to The Place…
1Pe 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree…

He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife,

Abraham retained the elements required to complete the offering, accepting the painful responsibility placed upon him.

Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Jas 2:21-23 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…

and the two of them walked on together.

Father and son continued toward Moriah in solemn unity, Isaac accompanying Abraham without yet knowing that he was the intended offering.

Amo 3:3 Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?
Psa 133:1 A song of ascents. Of David. Behold, how good…

Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!”

Isaac’s appeal reflects the trust and affection between father and son as they journeyed together to the place of sacrifice. Abraham remained the responsible leader of the household and of the offering God had commanded.

2Ki 2:12 As Elisha watched, he cried out, “My father, my father,…
2Ki 13:14 When Elisha had fallen sick with the illness…

“Here I am, my son,” he replied.

Abraham answered with care and attention, though he carried the burden of knowing what God had required. His readiness to hear Isaac stands alongside his commitment to obey God.

Gen 27:18 So Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.”…
1Sa 3:4 Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered…
1Sa 3:6 Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up…

“The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac,

Isaac recognized that the preparations for a burnt offering were complete except for the animal. He was familiar with the worship practices of his family and understood what such a sacrifice required.

Lev 1:7 The sons of Aaron the priest shall put a fire on the altar…
Lev 6:12 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning;…
Lev 6:13 The fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually;…

“but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Isaac’s question brings the central tension of the journey into view. Abraham had brought no lamb because Isaac himself had been designated for the offering, yet God would provide a substitute. The coming provision reveals that acceptable sacrifice depends upon God’s provision.

Num 28:3-4 And tell them that this is the food offering…
Exo 29:38-39 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar…
Jhn 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,…

Abraham answered,

Abraham did not reveal the full command God had given him, yet he continued in obedience, trusting that God would remain faithful to His promise concerning Isaac.

Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Jas 2:21-23 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…

“God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering,

Abraham looked to God for the sacrifice required. On the mountain, God provided a ram in Isaac’s place, establishing the pattern of a substitute offered by God.

Jhn 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,…
1Pe 1:18-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things…
Heb 10:10-14 And by that will, we have been sanctified…

my son.”

Isaac was Abraham’s beloved son and the promised heir through whom God had said He would build a great nation. Abraham’s willingness to surrender him showed that he trusted God’s promise even when he could not see how it would be fulfilled.

Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…

And the two walked on together.

Father and son continued toward the place of sacrifice in quiet obedience, with Isaac trusting Abraham and Abraham trusting God.

Amo 3:3 Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?
Luk 24:15 And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up…

When they arrived at the place God had designated,

Abraham had followed God’s instructions to the mountain in the land of Moriah. The site later became associated with the temple mount in Jerusalem, giving this event lasting significance in Israel’s worship and sacrificial history.

2Ch 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD…
Deu 12:5-6 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…
Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it…

Abraham built the altar there

He prepared to carry out the command he had received, approaching God in obedience despite the cost involved.

Gen 12:8 From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel…
Jos 8:30-31 At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal to the LORD…
1Ki 18:31-32 And Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe…

and arranged the wood.

Everything was made ready for a burnt offering, in which the sacrifice would be wholly given to God.

1Ki 18:33 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull…
Lev 1:7-8 The sons of Aaron the priest shall put a fire on the altar…

He bound his son Isaac

Isaac submitted to his father, and Abraham proceeded in faith that God would remain faithful to His promise concerning Isaac.

Jas 2:21-23 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…
Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…

and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.

The promised son lay before God as Abraham faced the fullest test of his trust. God’s provision of a substitute would reveal that He did not require Isaac’s death and would point forward to the sacrifice He Himself would provide.

Lev 6:12-13 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning;…
Lev 1:9 The entrails and legs must be washed with water,…
Exo 29:38-42 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar…

Then Abraham reached out his hand

Abraham acted with full resolve, showing that he trusted God even when the command appeared to conflict with the promise given through Isaac. His obedience brought him to the point of surrendering what was most precious to him.

Mat 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold…
2Sa 6:6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon,…
1Ki 13:4 Now when King Jeroboam, who was at the altar in Bethel,…

and took the knife

The knife made the intended sacrifice unmistakably real. Abraham was not merely expressing willingness in principle; he was prepared to carry out God’s command.

Jdg 19:29 When he reached his house, he picked up a knife…
Exo 4:25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin…

to slaughter his son.

Isaac, the promised heir, lay bound on the altar as Abraham prepared to offer him. The event reveals the depth of Abraham’s faith in God’s power and faithfulness and anticipates God’s provision of a substitute.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Jas 2:21 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…
2Ki 3:27 So he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him,…

The LORD Provides the Sacrifice

Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven,

At the moment Abraham was prepared to carry out God’s command, the angel of the LORD intervened from heaven with divine authority. The test had reached its appointed climax, revealing Abraham’s obedience without requiring Isaac’s death.

Gen 21:17 Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God…
Exo 3:2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him……
Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved…

“Abraham, Abraham!”

The urgent repetition stops Abraham at once and marks the importance of the moment. God addresses Abraham personally, showing that He has seen every step of his obedience.

Exo 3:4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,…
1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…
Act 9:4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him,…

“Here I am,” he replied.

Abraham remains attentive and ready to obey, even after facing the greatest trial of his life. His answer reflects the faith that had led him to trust God’s promise concerning Isaac.

1Sa 3:4 Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered…
Gen 31:11 In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’…
Isa 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying…

“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,”

The angel of the Lord stopped Abraham before Isaac was harmed, showing that God had never intended a human sacrifice. Abraham’s obedience had been fully demonstrated, and God intervened with mercy and provision.

1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
1Sa 26:9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…

said the angel,

Speaking with divine authority, the angel of the Lord delivered God’s command and confirmed that Abraham’s response to the test was accepted.

Luk 1:30 So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,…
Jdg 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said,…
Gen 21:17 Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God…

“for now I know that you fear God,

Abraham’s fear of God was shown by reverent trust and submission. Though the command tested him deeply, he placed God’s will above even his love for Isaac.

Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Exo 20:20 “Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test…
Job 1:8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered…

since you have not withheld your only son from me.”

Isaac was Abraham’s only son of promise, the child through whom God had pledged to continue the covenant. Abraham’s willingness to give him up revealed the depth of his faith, while God’s restraint of Abraham anticipated His own giving of His Son for sinners.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…

Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns.

God provided the sacrifice at the moment Abraham’s obedience had been tested. The ram was suitable for a burnt offering and replaced Isaac, showing that God Himself supplied what was required. The provision anticipates the greater sacrifice God would provide in His Son, the Lamb of God.

Dan 8:3-4 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a ram with two horns…
Psa 118:27 The LORD is God; He has made His light to shine upon us.…
Lev 1:10 If, however, one’s offering is a burnt offering…

So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

Abraham acted in faith, trusting God’s promise concerning Isaac even when he could not see how it would be fulfilled. The ram died in Isaac’s place, establishing a clear picture of substitution: an acceptable sacrifice was offered so that the son might live.

Lev 1:3-4 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,…
Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…

And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide.

Abraham named Mount Moriah to commemorate God’s provision of the ram in Isaac’s place. The altar became a lasting witness that God had accepted the substitute He supplied, preserving the promised son through whom His covenant purposes would continue.

1Sa 7:12 Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up.…
Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.
Php 4:19 And my God will supply all your needs…

So to this day it is said,

The account gave rise to a well-known saying among God’s people, preserving the memory of what occurred on the mountain and of God’s faithfulness in Abraham’s greatest trial.

2Sa 18:18 During his lifetime, Absalom had set up a pillar…
1Ki 9:13 “What are these towns you have given me?” asked Hiram…
Jos 4:9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle…

“On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

Mount Moriah remained associated with God’s provision and presence, later becoming the site of Solomon’s temple. The provision of the ram also points forward to God’s greater provision of a sacrifice for sin through Jesus Christ.

Psa 24:3-5 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand…
Isa 2:3 And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up…
2Ch 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD…

And the angel of the LORD

The angel of the LORD appears again as God’s divine messenger, speaking with God’s own authority.

Exo 3:2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him……
Jdg 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said,…
Jdg 13:3 The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her…

called to Abraham

After Abraham’s obedience had been tested and Isaac was spared, the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven.

Gen 12:1 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country…
Isa 51:2 Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah…
Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place…

from heaven

The phrase “from heaven” confirms that both the command and the promised blessing come from God alone.

Exo 20:22 Then the LORD said to Moses, “This is what you are to tell…
Deu 4:36 He let you hear His voice from heaven to discipline you…
Jhn 12:28 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:……

a second time,

“The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time” signals a renewed and emphatic declaration of God’s covenant favor following Abraham’s obedient response.

1Ki 19:7 A second time the angel of the LORD returned…
Jon 3:1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
Jer 1:13 Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking,…

saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD,

God confirms His promise with an oath grounded in His own unchanging character and supreme authority. No higher name exists by which He could swear. The LORD Himself speaks, giving Abraham certain assurance that His covenant purposes will stand.

Jer 22:5 But if you do not obey these words, then I swear by Myself,…
Isa 45:23 By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth,…
Heb 6:13-14 When God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one…

that because you have done this

Abraham obeyed God’s command to offer Isaac, proving the reality of his faith under severe testing. He trusted that God would remain faithful to His promise concerning Isaac, even when obedience required surrendering what was most precious to him.

Jas 2:21-23 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…
Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Rom 4:20-22 Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God…

and have not withheld your only son,

Isaac was Abraham’s unique son of promise, the heir through whom God had promised to establish a covenant line. Abraham’s willingness to give him up points forward to God’s giving of His own Son as the sacrifice for sin.

Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
1Jn 4:9-10 This is how God’s love was revealed among us: …

I will surely bless you,

God confirms the covenant promise to Abraham after his obedience on Mount Moriah. The blessing includes God’s favor, protection, and the enduring role of Abraham’s family in His purposes.

Heb 6:14 I will surely bless you and multiply your descendants…
Gen 12:2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;…
Gen 18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation…

and I will multiply your descendants

Abraham’s offspring would become a great people through Isaac, despite the apparent impossibility of the promise during Abraham and Sarah’s old age. The promise also reaches beyond physical descent to all who belong to God through faith.

Gen 17:2 I will establish My covenant between Me and you…
Exo 32:13 Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,…
Gen 13:16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth…

like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore.

The immense number of stars and grains of sand portrays descendants beyond human counting. Israel’s growth into a nation demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His word.

Heb 11:12 And so from one man, and he as good as dead,…
Jer 33:22 As the hosts of heaven cannot be counted…
Gen 15:5 And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look…

Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.

Abraham’s descendants would overcome opposing peoples and take control of fortified cities, signifying victory and dominion over adversaries. The promise anticipates Israel’s victories in the land and ultimately points to God’s triumph over every enemy through the promised Seed.

Gen 24:60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister,…
1Sa 17:52 Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward…
Deu 28:7 The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up against you…

And through your offspring

God reaffirmed that His covenant purpose would advance through Abraham’s offspring, beginning with Isaac and continuing through the chosen line. The promise ultimately reaches its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the singular descendant through whom God brings salvation to the world.

Gen 21:12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed…
Gal 3:16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.…
Gen 15:5 And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look…

all nations of the earth

God’s purpose was never confined to Abraham’s family alone. Through the line of promise, people from every nation would receive the blessing God intended for humanity.

Gen 18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation…
Gen 26:4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars…
Gen 12:3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those…

will be blessed,

This blessing includes reconciliation with God, forgiveness of sin, and participation in His covenant people through faith.

Gal 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles…
Act 3:25 And you are sons of the prophets and of the covenant…
Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing…

because you have obeyed My voice.”

Abraham’s obedience in offering Isaac demonstrated that he trusted God’s word above his own understanding and desires. God’s promise rested on His covenant faithfulness, while Abraham’s obedience publicly displayed the reality of his faith.

Gen 26:5 because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My charge…
Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Deu 28:1 Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God…

Abraham went back to his servants,

Abraham rejoined the men who had remained behind while he and Isaac went up the mountain. The test had ended, the Lord had provided a substitute sacrifice, and Abraham’s obedience had been proven.

and they got up and set out together for Beersheba.

Abraham, Isaac, and the servants returned south to Beersheba, where Abraham had lived and where he had established peaceful relations with Abimelech. The journey marks a return from the mountain of testing to the ordinary duties of life under God’s continuing promise.

Beersheba became an important place in the patriarchal history, associated later with Isaac and Jacob. Abraham’s residence there reflects his continued life as a pilgrim in the land God had promised to give his descendants.
