1Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone.1Καὶ μεθ’ ἡμέρας ἓξ παραλαμβάνει Ἰησοῦς τὸν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναφέρει αὐτοὺς εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν κατ’ ἰδίαν
2As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.2καὶ μετεμορφώθη ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν καὶ ἔλαμψεν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ὡς ἥλιος τὰ δὲ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο λευκὰ ὡς τὸ φῶς
3Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.3Καὶ ἰδοὺ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς Μωϋσῆς καὶ Ἠλίας συλλαλοῦντες* μετ’ αὐτοῦ
4Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”4ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ Κύριε καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι εἰ θέλεις ποιήσω ὧδε τρεῖς σκηνάς σοὶ μίαν καὶ Μωϋσεῖ μίαν καὶ Ἠλίᾳ μίαν
5But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”5Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ νεφέλη φωτεινὴ ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα Οὗτός ἐστιν Υἱός μου ἀγαπητός ἐν εὐδόκησα ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ
6The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.6καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα
7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”7Καὶ προσῆλθεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἁψάμενος αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἐγέρθητε καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε
8And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus.8ἐπάραντες δὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν οὐδένα εἶδον εἰ μὴ αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον
9As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”9Καὶ καταβαινόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς λέγων Μηδενὶ εἴπητε τὸ ὅραμα ἕως οὗ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγερθῇ
10Then his disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes? ”10Καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Τί οὖν οἱ γραμματεῖς λέγουσιν ὅτι Ἠλίαν δεῖ ἐλθεῖν πρῶτον
11Jesus replied, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready.11 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἠλίας μὲν ἔρχεται καὶ ἀποκαταστήσει πάντα
12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.”12λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι Ἠλίας ἤδη ἦλθεν καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνωσαν αὐτὸν ἀλλὰ* ἐποίησαν ἐν αὐτῷ ὅσα ἠθέλησαν οὕτως καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μέλλει πάσχειν ὑπ’ αὐτῶν
13Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist.
14At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said,14Καὶ ἐλθόντων πρὸς τὸν ὄχλον προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἄνθρωπος γονυπετῶν αὐτὸν
15“Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.15καὶ λέγων Κύριε ἐλέησόν μου τὸν υἱόν ὅτι σεληνιάζεται καὶ κακῶς πάσχει* πολλάκις γὰρ πίπτει εἰς τὸ πῦρ καὶ πολλάκις εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ
16So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”16καὶ προσήνεγκα αὐτὸν τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν αὐτὸν θεραπεῦσαι
17Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”17Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν γενεὰ ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη ἕως πότε μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἔσομαι ἕως πότε ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν φέρετέ μοι αὐτὸν ὧδε
18Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well.18καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ ἐθεραπεύθη παῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης
19Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”19Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ κατ’ ἰδίαν εἶπον Διὰ τί ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό
20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.
22After they gathered again in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.22Συστρεφομένων δὲ αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Μέλλει Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων
23 He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead.” And the disciples were filled with grief. Payment of the Temple Tax23καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται καὶ ἐλυπήθησαν σφόδρα
24On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?”24Ἐλθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ προσῆλθον οἱ τὰ δίδραχμα λαμβάνοντες τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ εἶπαν διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν οὐ τελεῖ ‹τὰ› δίδραχμα
25“Yes, he does,” Peter replied. Then he went into the house. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, “What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered? ”25Λέγει Ναί Καὶ ἐλθόντα εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν προέφθασεν αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦς λέγων Τί σοι δοκεῖ Σίμων οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τίνων λαμβάνουσιν τέλη κῆνσον ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων
26“They tax the people they have conquered,” Peter replied. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free!26Εἰπόντος δέ Ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἄρα¦Γε ἐλεύθεροί εἰσιν οἱ υἱοί
27 However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”27ἵνα δὲ μὴ σκανδαλίσωμεν αὐτούς πορευθεὶς εἰς θάλασσαν βάλε ἄγκιστρον καὶ τὸν ἀναβάντα πρῶτον ἰχθὺν ἆρον καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ εὑρήσεις στατῆρα ἐκεῖνον λαβὼν δὸς αὐτοῖς ἀντὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ
