1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

1Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ

2And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, he sent them into his vineyard.

2συμφωνήσας δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ

3When it was about nine o'clock in the morning, he went out again and saw others standing around in the marketplace without work.

3Καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς

4He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.'

4καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν

5So they went. When he went out again about noon and three o'clock that afternoon, he did the same thing.

5οἱ δὲ ἀπῆλθον Πάλιν δὲ ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως

6And about five o'clock that afternoon he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why are you standing here all day without work?'

6Περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί

7They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go and work in the vineyard too.'

7Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ⧼καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον λήψεσθε⧽

8When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call the workers and give the pay starting with the last hired until the first.'

8Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ Κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος ‹αὐτοῖς› τὸν μισθόν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων

9When those hired about five o'clock came, each received a full day's pay.

9Καὶ* ἐλθόντες οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον

10And when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each one also received the standard wage.

10καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί

11When they received it, they began to complain against the landowner,

11Λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου

12saying, 'These last fellows worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who bore the hardship and burning heat of the day.'

12λέγοντες Οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν καὶ ἴσους αὐτοὺς ἡμῖν ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα

13And the landowner replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn't you agree with me to work for the standard wage?

13Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἑταῖρε οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι

14Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last man the same as I gave to you.

14ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί

15Am I not permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?'

15[ἢ] οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ὃ θέλω ποιῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς ἢ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι

16So the last will be first, and the first last."

16Οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι ⧼πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοί ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί⧽

17As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve aside privately and said to them on the way,

17‹Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα ‹μαθητὰς› κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς

18"Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the experts in the law. They will condemn him to death,

18Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν 〈εἰς〉 θανάτῳ*

19and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged severely and crucified. Yet on the third day, he will be raised."

19καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται

20Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling down she asked him for a favor.

20Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ

21He said to her, "What do you want?" She replied, "Permit these two sons of mine to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom."

21Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Τί θέλεις Λέγει αὐτῷ Εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν ‹σου› καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου

22Jesus answered, "You don't know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able."

22Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν ⧼ἢ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι⧽ Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Δυνάμεθα

23He told them, "You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right and at my left is not mine to give. Rather, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."

23Λέγει αὐτοῖς Τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε ⧼βάπτισμα ὃ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθήσεσθε⧽ τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν τοῦτο δοῦναι ἀλλ’ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου

24Now when the other ten heard this, they were angry with the two brothers.

24Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν

25But Jesus called them and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions use their authority over them.

25ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν

26It must not be this way among you! Instead whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,

26οὐχ οὕτως ἔσται* ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος

27and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave--

27καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος

28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

28ὥσπερ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν

29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed them.

29Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς

30Two blind men were sitting by the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!"

30καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ

31The crowd scolded them to get them to be quiet. But they shouted even more loudly, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"

31Ὁ δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ

32Jesus stopped, called them, and said, "What do you want me to do for you?"

32Καὶ στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν Τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν

33They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened."

33Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν

34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

34Σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ
