Luke 4

The Temptation of Jesus
(Matthew 4:1–11; Mark 1:12–13)

1 Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (then) πλήρης (full) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) ὑπέστρεψεν (returned) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), καὶ (and) ἤγετο (was led) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) 2 ἡμέρας (days) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) πειραζόμενος (being tempted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil). Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔφαγεν (He ate) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those), καὶ (and) συντελεσθεισῶν (on the having ended) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπείνασεν (He was hungry).

3 Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to Him) (the) διάβολος (devil)· Εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰπὲ (speak) τῷ (to the) λίθῳ (stone) τούτῳ (this) ἵνα (that) γένηται (it might become) ἄρτος (bread).

4 Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Γέγραπται (It has been written) ὅτι (-) Οὐκ (Not) ἐπ’ (on) ἄρτῳ (bread) μόνῳ (alone) ζήσεται (shall live) (the) ἄνθρωπος (man).

5 Καὶ (And) ἀναγαγὼν (having led up) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔδειξεν (he showed) αὐτῷ (Him) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) βασιλείας (kingdoms) τῆς (of the) οἰκουμένης (world) ἐν (in) στιγμῇ (a moment) χρόνου (of time). 6 καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him) (the) διάβολος (devil)· Σοὶ (To You) δώσω (I will give) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this) ἅπασαν (all) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτῶν (of them), ὅτι (for) ἐμοὶ (to me) παραδέδοται (it has been delivered) καὶ (and) (to whom) ἐὰν (if) θέλω (I wish) δίδωμι (I give) αὐτήν (it)· 7 σὺ (You) οὖν (therefore) ἐὰν (if) προσκυνήσῃς (You worship) ἐνώπιον (before) ἐμοῦ (me), ἔσται (will be) σοῦ (Yours) πᾶσα (all).

8 Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Γέγραπται (It has been written)· Κύριον (The Lord) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) Προσκυνήσεις (you shall worship) καὶ (and) αὐτῷ (Him) μόνῳ (only) λατρεύσεις (shall you serve).

9 Ἤγαγεν (He led) δὲ (also) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἔστησεν (set Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) πτερύγιον (pinnacle) τοῦ (of the) ἱεροῦ (temple), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), βάλε (throw) σεαυτὸν (Yourself) ἐντεῦθεν (from here) κάτω (down)· 10 γέγραπται (It has been written) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-)

Τοῖς (To the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐντελεῖται (He will command) περὶ (concerning) σοῦ (You)

τοῦ (-) διαφυλάξαι (to guard carefully) σε (You),

11 καὶ (and) ὅτι (-) ἐπὶ (on) χειρῶν (hands) ἀροῦσίν (they will lift up) σε (You)

μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) προσκόψῃς (You may strike) πρὸς (against) λίθον (a stone) τὸν (the) πόδα (foot) σου (of You).

12 Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (-) Εἴρηται (It has been said)· Οὐκ (Not) ἐκπειράσεις (you shall test) Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you).

13 Καὶ (And) συντελέσας (having ended) πάντα (every) πειρασμὸν (temptation) (the) διάβολος (devil) ἀπέστη (departed) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἄχρι (until) καιροῦ (an opportune time).

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 Καὶ (And) ὑπέστρεψεν (returned) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δυνάμει (power) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee)· καὶ (and) φήμη (a report) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) καθ’ (through) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) περιχώρου (surrounding region) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him). 15 καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἐδίδασκεν (was teaching) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), δοξαζόμενος (being glorified) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all).

The Rejection at Nazareth

16 Καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (He came) εἰς (to) Ναζαρά (Nazareth), οὗ (where) ἦν (He had been) τεθραμμένος (brought up), καὶ (and) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) εἰωθὸς (custom) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῶν (of the) σαββάτων (Sabbaths) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγήν (synagogue), καὶ (and) ἀνέστη (He rose up) ἀναγνῶναι (to read). 17 καὶ (And) ἐπεδόθη (there was given) αὐτῷ (to Him) βιβλίον (the scroll of) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah), καὶ (and) ἀναπτύξας (having unrolled) τὸ (the) βιβλίον (scroll) εὗρεν (He found) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) οὗ (where) ἦν (it was) γεγραμμένον (written)·

18 Πνεῦμα (The Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμέ (Me),

Οὗ (of which) εἵνεκεν (because) ἔχρισέν (He anointed) με (Me)

Εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach good news) πτωχοῖς (to the poor),

Ἀπέσταλκέν (He has sent) με (Me) κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) αἰχμαλώτοις (to the captives) ἄφεσιν (deliverance)

Καὶ (and) τυφλοῖς (to the blind) ἀνάβλεψιν (recovery of sight),

Ἀποστεῖλαι (to send forth) τεθραυσμένους (the oppressed) ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (deliverance),

19 Κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) ἐνιαυτὸν (the year) Κυρίου (of the Lord) δεκτόν (acceptable).

20 Καὶ (And) πτύξας (having rolled up) τὸ (the) βιβλίον (scroll) ἀποδοὺς (having given it back) τῷ (to the) ὑπηρέτῃ (attendant) ἐκάθισεν (He sat down)· καὶ (and) πάντων (of all) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) ἦσαν (were) ἀτενίζοντες (looking intently) αὐτῷ (on Him). 21 ἤρξατο (He began) δὲ (then) λέγειν (to say) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ὅτι (-) Σήμερον (Today) πεπλήρωται (has been fulfilled) (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) αὕτη (this) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὠσὶν (ears) ὑμῶν (of you⁺).

22 Καὶ (And) πάντες (all) ἐμαρτύρουν (were testifying) αὐτῷ (to Him) καὶ (and) ἐθαύμαζον (were marveling) ἐπὶ (at) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) τῆς (-) χάριτος (of grace) τοῖς (that) ἐκπορευομένοις (are proceeding) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying)· Οὐχὶ (Not) υἱός (the son) ἐστιν (is) Ἰωσὴφ (of Joseph) οὗτος (this)?

23 Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· Πάντως (Surely) ἐρεῖτέ (you⁺ will say) μοι (to Me) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this)· Ἰατρέ (Physician), θεράπευσον (heal) σεαυτόν (yourself)· ὅσα (Whatsoever) ἠκούσαμεν (we heard) γενόμενα (was done) εἰς (in) τὴν (-) Καφαρναοὺμ (Capernaum), ποίησον (do) καὶ (also) ὧδε (here) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πατρίδι (hometown) σου (of You).

24 Εἶπεν (He said) δέ (then)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) οὐδεὶς (no) προφήτης (prophet) δεκτός (acceptable) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πατρίδι (hometown) αὐτοῦ (of him). 25 ἐπ’ (In) ἀληθείας (truth) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), πολλαὶ (many) χῆραι (widows) ἦσαν (were) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Ἠλίου (of Elijah) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), ὅτε (when) ἐκλείσθη (was shut up) (the) οὐρανὸς (sky) ἐπὶ (for) ἔτη (years) τρία (three) καὶ (and) μῆνας (months) ἕξ (six), ὡς (when) ἐγένετο (came) λιμὸς (a famine) μέγας (great) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land), 26 καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) οὐδεμίαν (none) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπέμφθη (was sent) Ἠλίας (Elijah) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) Σάρεπτα (Zarephath) τῆς (of the) Σιδωνίας (Sidonians) πρὸς (to) γυναῖκα (a woman) χήραν (a widow). 27 καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) λεπροὶ (lepers) ἦσαν (were) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) ἐπὶ (in the time) Ἐλισαίου (of Elisha) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (none) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκαθαρίσθη (was cleansed) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Ναιμὰν (Naaman) (the) Σύρος (Syrian).

28 Καὶ (And) ἐπλήσθησαν (were filled) πάντες (all) θυμοῦ (with anger) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) ἀκούοντες (hearing) ταῦτα (these things), 29 καὶ (and) ἀναστάντες (having risen up) ἐξέβαλον (they cast) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔξω (out) τῆς (of) πόλεως (the city), καὶ (and) ἤγαγον (led) αὐτὸν (Him) ἕως (unto) ὀφρύος (the brow) τοῦ (of the) ὄρους (hill) ἐφ’ (upon) οὗ (which) (the) πόλις (city) ᾠκοδόμητο (had been built) αὐτῶν (of them), ὥστε (so as) κατακρημνίσαι (to throw over) αὐτόν (Him)· 30 αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) διελθὼν (having passed) διὰ (through) μέσου (the midst) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπορεύετο (went away).

31 Καὶ (And) κατῆλθεν (He went down) εἰς (to) Καφαρναοὺμ (Capernaum) πόλιν (a city) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee). καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) διδάσκων (teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (on) τοῖς (the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths)· 32 καὶ (and) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (they were astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὅτι (because) ἐν (with) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ἦν (was) (the) λόγος (word) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

33 Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) ἦν (was) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔχων (having) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δαιμονίου (of a demon) ἀκαθάρτου (unclean), καὶ (and) ἀνέκραξεν (he cried out) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud)· 34 Ἔα (Ha), τί (What) ἡμῖν (to us) καὶ (and) σοί (to You), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Ναζαρηνέ (the Nazarene)? ἦλθες (Did You come) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy) ἡμᾶς (us)? οἶδά (I know) σε (You) τίς (who) εἶ (are), (the) Ἅγιος (Holy One) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

35 Καὶ (And) ἐπετίμησεν (rebuked) αὐτῷ (him) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγων (saying)· Φιμώθητι (Be silenced) καὶ (and) ἔξελθε (come out) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him). καὶ (And) ῥίψαν (having thrown) αὐτὸν (him) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst) ἐξῆλθεν (it came out) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) μηδὲν (in nothing) βλάψαν (having hurt) αὐτόν (him).

36 Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (came) θάμβος (amazement) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all), καὶ (and) συνελάλουν (they were speaking together) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) λέγοντες (saying)· Τίς (What) (-) λόγος (word) οὗτος (is this), ὅτι (that) ἐν (with) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (power) ἐπιτάσσει (He commands) τοῖς (the) ἀκαθάρτοις (unclean) πνεύμασιν (spirits) καὶ (and) ἐξέρχονται (they come out)? 37 καὶ (And) ἐξεπορεύετο (was going out) ἦχος (the report) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him) εἰς (into) πάντα (every) τόπον (place) τῆς (of the) περιχώρου (surrounding region).
