Isaiah 50

Israel’s Sin

This is what the LORD says:

The covenant God speaks with full authority concerning His relationship with Israel.

Amo 1:3 For three transgressions of Damascus, even four,…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Hag 1:2 this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say,…

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away?

Zion, pictured as the mother of Israel’s children, had been sent into exile under judgment, but the LORD had not permanently divorced her or ended His covenant purposes for her.

Jer 3:8 She saw that faithless Israel had committed adultery,…
Deu 24:1 If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing…

Or to which of My creditors did I sell you?

God was under no obligation to anyone and had not surrendered His people because of debt or weakness.

2Ki 4:1 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…
Neh 5:8 “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish brothers,”…

Look, you were sold for your iniquities,

Israel’s captivity resulted from its own persistent rebellion against the LORD.

Isa 52:3 For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing,…
1Ki 21:20 When Elijah arrived, Ahab said to him,…
Rom 7:14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,…

and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

The nation’s exile was the consequence of covenant unfaithfulness, yet the imagery leaves room for restoration because God had not abandoned His people forever.

2Ki 17:18 So the LORD was very angry with Israel…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…
Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…

Why was no one there when I arrived?

The Lord had not abandoned His people; their exile resulted from their own sin and unfaithfulness. Though He sought them through His prophets and called them back to covenant faithfulness, Israel largely refused to receive Him.

Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;…
Isa 59:16 He saw that there was no man; He was amazed.…
Ezk 22:30 I searched for a man among them to repair the wall…

Why did no one answer when I called?

Their silence revealed spiritual rebellion rather than any failure on God’s part. The nation had repeatedly ignored His warnings, resisted correction, and pursued other gods.

Jer 7:13 And now, because you have done all these things,…
Zec 7:13 And just as I had called and they would not listen,…
Pro 1:24 Because you refused my call, and no one took…

Is My hand too short to redeem you?

Israel had seen the Lord redeem them from slavery in Egypt and preserve them through many dangers. Their condition was not beyond His power to restore, and exile did not limit His ability to save.

Num 11:23 The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short?…
Isa 59:1 Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save…
Psa 77:15 With power You redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob…

Or do I lack the strength to deliver you?

The Lord’s strength had not diminished. He remained fully able to overthrow oppressors, return His people from captivity, and accomplish His purposes despite their weakness and the power of surrounding nations.

Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
Jer 32:27 “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh.”…
Psa 44:3 For it was not by their sword that they took the land;…

Behold, My rebuke dries up the sea;

The God who divided the Red Sea rules the waters and all creation. A mere word from Him can remove barriers for deliverance or bring judgment upon those who oppose Him.

Psa 106:9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;…
Nam 1:4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers…
Exo 14:21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…

I turn the rivers into a desert;

Water, which sustains life and agriculture, remains under God’s command. He can turn abundance into desolation, showing that Israel’s hope rests neither in the land nor in human strength, but in Him.

Psa 107:33 He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water…
Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Isa 19:5-6 The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed…

the fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst.

The image portrays judgment reaching even the natural world. When God withholds the waters, life fails, demonstrating the seriousness of sin and the certainty of His power to judge or restore.

Exo 7:21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad…
Psa 105:29 He turned their waters to blood and caused…
Rev 16:3-4 And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea…

I clothe the heavens in black

God declares His absolute authority over creation. He can darken the sky as an act of judgment, turning the ordered world into a visible sign of mourning and wrath. Such darkness recalls His judgments in history and anticipates the day when creation itself will testify to His righteous rule.

Jer 4:28 Therefore the earth will mourn and the heavens above…
Ezk 32:7-8 When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens…
Jol 2:10 Before them the earth quakes; the heavens tremble.…

and make sackcloth their covering.”

Sackcloth was worn in grief, humiliation, and repentance. Covering the heavens with it portrays the seriousness of human sin and the sorrow accompanying divine judgment. The image also points forward to the suffering of the Servant, who bore the grief and sin of His people.

Rev 6:12 And I watched as the Lamb opened the sixth seal…
Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days:…
Mrk 13:24 But in those days, after that tribulation:…

The Servant’s Obedience

The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship,

The Servant speaks with wisdom received from God, teaching truth with authority and faithfulness. Isaiah presents Him as fully obedient to the Lord, a portrait fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose words revealed the Father’s will.

Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Isa 49:2 He made My mouth like a sharp sword; He hid Me…

to sustain the weary with a word.

His ministry brings strength and comfort to those worn down by sin, suffering, and hardship. God’s people, especially in seasons of judgment and exile, needed such assurance, and the Servant provides it.

Mat 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened,…
Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…

He awakens Me morning by morning;

The Servant’s work is guided by continual fellowship with the Lord. Each day begins with renewed instruction and readiness to carry out God’s purpose.

Psa 5:3 In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice;…
Mrk 1:35 Early in the morning, while it was still dark,…
Lam 3:22-23 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD…

He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

Though the Servant teaches others, He willingly receives the Father’s instruction. His humble obedience stands in contrast to Israel’s frequent resistance to God’s voice and points to Christ’s perfect submission to the Father.

Psa 40:6-8 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,…
Jhn 6:45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught……
1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…

The Lord GOD has opened My ears,

God commissioned His servant and gave Him clear understanding of the task before Him. Unlike Israel, which repeatedly resisted God’s word, the servant receives divine instruction with full readiness to carry out God’s purpose.

Psa 40:6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,…
Heb 10:5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said:…
Psa 40:8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; …

and I have not been rebellious,

The servant responds in complete obedience. Isaiah’s servant stands in contrast to the nation’s rebellion and ultimately points to Christ, who obeyed the Father even when obedience led to suffering and death.

Jhn 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will…
Luk 22:42 Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me.…
Heb 5:8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience…

nor have I turned back.

Though rejection, humiliation, and affliction lay ahead, the servant did not abandon His calling. His determination anticipates Christ’s unwavering journey to Jerusalem and the cross.

Luk 9:62 Then Jesus said, “No one who puts his hand to the plow…
Heb 10:38-39 But My righteous one will live by faith;…
Pro 4:25-27 Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead.…

I offered My back to those who struck Me,

The Servant willingly submits to brutal beating rather than resisting His appointed path. Flogging was a severe public punishment, and Jesus was scourged before His crucifixion.

Psa 129:3 The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows…
Jhn 19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.
Mat 27:26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus…

and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard.

Tearing out a man’s beard was a deliberate act of humiliation and contempt. The Servant accepts disgrace as well as physical pain, anticipating the abuse and mockery Jesus endured during His passion.

2Sa 10:4-5 So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half…
Lam 3:30 Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him;…
Mat 26:67 Then they spit in His face and struck Him.…

I did not hide My face from scorn and spittle.

Spitting upon someone publicly expressed total rejection and shame. Jesus was spat upon, struck, and mocked by those who condemned Him, yet He did not turn away from the suffering required to accomplish God’s purpose.

Mat 27:30 Then they spit on Him and took the staff…
Mrk 15:19 They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him…
Jhn 19:3 And they went up to Him again and again, saying,…

Because the Lord GOD helps Me,

Because the Lord GOD helps the Servant, He faces opposition with steadfast confidence as He fulfills His appointed mission.

Heb 13:6 So we say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper;”…
Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…
Isa 41:13 For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your hand…

I have not been disgraced;

Though He faces rejection, abuse, and public humiliation, His obedience does not end in defeat.

Psa 31:17 O LORD, let me not be ashamed, for I have called on You.…
Psa 25:3 Surely none who wait for You will be put to shame;…
Psa 119:6 Then I would not be ashamed when I consider…

therefore I have set My face like flint,

He proceeds with unwavering resolve toward the suffering required to bear sin and accomplish redemption.

Luk 9:51 As the day of His ascension approached,…
Ezk 3:8-9 Behold, I will make your face as hard as their faces…

and I know that I will not be put to shame.

God’s final vindication of the Servant confirms that His suffering was not failure but the path to exaltation.

Psa 31:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. In You, O LORD…
Rom 10:11 It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes…
1Pe 2:6 For it stands in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a stone,…

The One who vindicates Me is near.

The Servant rests in the Lord’s judgment, certain that God will uphold Him against false accusations and suffering. Though rejected and abused, He is not abandoned; the Judge of all the earth stands ready to declare His righteousness.

Deu 32:36 For the LORD will vindicate His people and have compassion…
Isa 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper,…
Psa 145:18 The LORD is near to all who call on Him,…

Who will dare to contend with Me?

No human opponent can prevail against the One whom God approves. The challenge anticipates the Messiah’s innocence before His accusers and the certainty that God’s verdict will overturn every unjust charge.

Job 13:19 Can anyone indict me? If so, I will be silent and die.
Rom 8:31 What then shall we say in response to these things?…
Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.…

Let us confront each other!

The Servant does not withdraw from scrutiny or accusation. He openly faces those who oppose Him because His cause is righteous and His confidence is in the Lord.

Isa 43:26 Remind Me, let us argue the matter together.…
Isa 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD.…
Job 23:4 I would plead my case before Him and fill my mouth…

Who has a case against Me?

The courtroom imagery continues as any accuser is invited to present evidence. None can establish guilt against the Servant, whose obedience to God remains unbroken even in the face of persecution.

Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?…
Isa 41:21 “Present your case,” says the LORD. “Submit your arguments…”…
Job 31:35-37 Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature.…

Let him approach Me!

The invitation exposes the emptiness of every accusation. Those who oppose God’s Servant may bring their claims, but the Lord Himself will vindicate the One who faithfully carries out His will.

Isa 45:20-21 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Isa 41:1 Be silent before Me, O islands, and let the peoples renew…
Heb 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence…

Surely the Lord GOD helps Me.

The Servant rests in the certainty that God stands with Him in His suffering and mission. Though He is opposed, beaten, and mocked, He knows that the Lord will sustain and vindicate Him.

Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
Heb 13:6 So we say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper;”…

Who is there to condemn Me?

No human accusation can overturn God’s judgment. The Servant’s opponents may treat Him as guilty, but God will establish His righteousness and reveal the justice of His cause.

Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?…
Psa 37:33 The LORD will not leave them in their power.…
Jhn 8:10-11 Then Jesus straightened up and asked her,…

See, they will all wear out like a garment;

Those who resist God’s Servant possess only temporary power. Their hostility, influence, and judgments will pass away, while God’s purpose remains.

Psa 102:26-27 They will perish, but You remain; they will all…
Heb 1:11-12 They will perish, but You remain; they will…
Isa 51:6 But My salvation will last forever, and My righteousness……

the moths will devour them.

Like clothing ruined by moths, the enemies of the Servant will ultimately perish. Their apparent strength cannot endure against the Lord, who preserves and vindicates His faithful Servant.

Isa 51:8 For the moth will devour them like a garment,…
Jas 5:2 Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.
Job 13:28 So man wastes away like something rotten…

Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of His Servant?

Isaiah calls God’s faithful people to reverence the LORD and heed the Servant through whom He speaks. In its immediate setting, the Servant is the obedient sufferer described in Isaiah 50, who receives God’s instruction and remains faithful despite rejection and abuse. The passage ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the righteous Servant who perfectly obeyed the Father.

Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Act 3:22-23 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up…
Psa 25:12 Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him…

Who among you walks in darkness and has no light?

Even those who fear God may pass through seasons of distress, uncertainty, or apparent abandonment. Darkness does not necessarily mean rebellion; it may accompany faithful obedience in a world opposed to God and His purposes.

Lam 3:2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness…
Isa 59:9-10 Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness…
Mic 7:8 Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen…

Let him trust in the name of the LORD;

In such darkness, God’s people are to rest in who He has revealed Himself to be—faithful, righteous, sovereign, and merciful. His promises remain sure when circumstances offer no visible direction.

Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses…
Psa 9:10 Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O LORD,…
Psa 33:21 For our hearts rejoice in Him, since we trust…

let him lean on his God.

The believer’s security is not found in personal strength or understanding but in dependence on God. He sustains those who remain faithful to Him, even when the way ahead cannot yet be seen.

Psa 18:18 They confronted me in my day of calamity,…
Psa 55:22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;…
Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not…

Behold, all you who kindle a fire,

Those who refuse the Lord’s guidance seek light in their own plans, strength, and counsel.

Jer 7:18 The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire…
Ezk 20:47-48 Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word…
Isa 1:31 The strong man will become tinder and his work…

who array yourselves with firebrands,

They surround themselves with resources of their own making, trusting what they can produce rather than the God who gives true light.

Pro 26:18-19 Like a madman shooting firebrands and deadly arrows,…
Amo 4:11 Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,…
Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…

walk in the light of your fire and of the firebrands you have lit!

The command is judicial and ironic: they may follow the path they have chosen, but their light cannot sustain or save them.

Isa 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…
Job 18:5-6 Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished;…
Pro 13:9 The light of the righteous shines brightly…

This is what you will receive from My hand:

The Lord Himself determines the outcome of their rebellion and self-reliance.

Jer 25:15 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:…
Psa 75:8 For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, full of foaming wine…
Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands…

You will lie down in a place of torment.

Their self-made light ends in judgment, sorrow, and separation from the safety found in trusting the Lord.

Luk 16:23-24 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up…
Rev 20:10 And the devil who had deceived them was thrown…
Rev 14:10-11 he too will drink the wine of God’s anger…
