Ecclesiastes 8
Berean Study Bible

Obey the King

Who is like the wise man?

Truly wise people are rare because wisdom is more than knowledge; it is the ability to judge rightly, live uprightly, and understand life under God’s rule.

1Ki 4:29-31 And God gave Solomon wisdom, exceedingly deep insight…
Ecc 7:19 Wisdom makes the wise man stronger than ten rulers…
Pro 16:21 The wise in heart are called discerning,…

Who knows the interpretation of a matter?

Wisdom enables a person to discern difficult situations and respond with sound judgment. Such understanding recognizes human limits and depends on God’s ordering of events.

Gen 40:8 “We both had dreams,” they replied, “but there is no one…
Dan 5:12 Daniel, the one he named Belteshazzar, was found…
Dan 2:27-30 Daniel answered the king, “No wise man, enchanter, …

A man’s wisdom brightens his face,

Wisdom brings inward steadiness that becomes visible in a person’s demeanor. It produces confidence, peace, and a measured outlook rather than confusion or fear.

Exo 34:29 And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai…
Dan 12:3 Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,…
Psa 34:5 Those who look to Him are radiant with joy;…

and the sternness of his face is changed.

The hardness and anxiety that often mark life’s burdens give way to gentleness and composure. Wisdom changes not only a person’s decisions but also the way he meets others and faces adversity.

Pro 15:13 A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance,…
1Sa 1:18 “May your maidservant find favor with you,” said Hannah.…
Pro 27:19 As water reflects the face, so the heart…

Keep the king’s command,

Israel’s king exercised authority under God and was responsible to uphold justice and order among the people. Respect for lawful royal authority helped preserve the stability of the covenant community.

Pro 24:21 My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not associate…
Rom 13:1-2 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities…
1Pe 2:13-17 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human…

I say,

The Teacher gives direct counsel drawn from his observation of life under human rule. His instruction recognizes that wisdom includes careful conduct before those entrusted with public authority.

Mat 5:18 For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away…
Luk 6:27 But to those of you who will listen, I say:…

because of your oath before God.

Loyalty to the king involved a solemn obligation made in God’s presence. Such commitments were not merely political; breaking them treated lightly a vow made before the Lord.

Ecc 5:4-6 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…
Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…

Do not hasten to leave his presence,

A servant before a king was expected to show restraint and honor. An abrupt departure could be understood as contempt, fear, or rebellion, especially when the ruler’s favor or judgment was involved. Wisdom calls for composure and respectful conduct before those entrusted with authority.

Pro 25:6-7 Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king,…
Pro 16:14 The wrath of a king is a messenger of death…
Pro 20:2 The terror of a king is like the roar of a lion;…

and do not persist in a bad cause,

One must not remain in a course of rebellion, injustice, or foolish opposition. In a royal court, siding with a treacherous cause could bring swift judgment. God’s people are not to defend wrongdoing or stubbornly continue in sin when correction is needed.

Pro 24:21-22 My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not associate…
Exo 23:2 You shall not follow the crowd in wrongdoing.…
Pro 1:10-15 My son, if sinners entice you, do not yield to them.…

for he will do whatever he pleases.

An earthly king possessed broad authority to carry out his decisions, and those before him could not presume to control the outcome. The warning also reflects the greater sovereignty of God, whose purposes stand and whose rule is perfectly righteous.

Psa 135:6 The LORD does all that pleases Him in the heavens…
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…
Job 23:13 But He is unchangeable, and who can oppose Him?…

For the king’s word is supreme,

Israel’s king exercised real governing authority as the Lord’s appointed ruler over the nation. His decrees carried the force of law, and subjects were expected to obey unless commanded to violate God’s law. The extent of royal power reflected the political realities of the ancient world, though Israel’s kings remained accountable to God.

Pro 16:10 A divine verdict is on the lips of a king;…
Dan 6:8 Therefore, O king, establish the decree and sign…
Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…

and who can say to him, “What are you doing?”

Openly challenging a king’s judgment could be treated as rebellion and bring severe punishment. The warning recognizes the practical limits placed on subjects under royal rule while also pointing beyond earthly kings to God’s unmatched sovereignty. No human ruler is ultimately absolute, but God’s purposes cannot be overturned or called into judgment by man.

Job 9:12 If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him?…
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…
Rom 9:20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…

Whoever keeps his command will come to no harm,

Obedience to the king’s lawful command ordinarily protected a person from the danger that came through defiance in an absolute monarchy. In Israel and the surrounding nations, rebellion against royal authority could bring swift punishment and disrupt public order. God established governing authority as a restraint on evil, though rulers themselves remained accountable to Him.

Pro 19:16 He who keeps a commandment preserves his soul,…
Deu 17:19-20 It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it…
Rom 13:3-4 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.…

and a wise heart knows the right time and procedure.

Wisdom enables a person to recognize when action is appropriate and how to proceed carefully in difficult circumstances. Rather than acting impulsively, the wise discern the proper occasion, method, and response, especially when dealing with those in authority. Such discernment acknowledges that God governs the times and events of life.

1Ch 12:32 From Issachar, men who understood the times…
Col 4:5 Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time.
Pro 16:9 A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines…

For there is a right time and procedure to every purpose,

God has established an appointed season and fitting course for every matter under His rule. Human plans are often clouded by limited knowledge, but God’s purposes unfold according to His wisdom and order.

Ecc 3:1 To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose…
Ecc 3:17 I said in my heart, “God will judge the righteous…
Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings…

though a man’s misery weighs heavily upon him.

People live with the burden of suffering, uncertainty, and the consequences of life in a fallen world. Such distress can make God’s timing difficult to understand, yet it does not overturn His sovereign purpose.

Job 5:7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
Job 14:1 “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days…”…
Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty…

Since no one knows what will happen,

Human beings cannot control the course of events or know how present circumstances will unfold. Though people may make plans and seek security, the future remains under God’s authority. Ecclesiastes repeatedly confronts the limits of human wisdom, wealth, labor, and power in a world affected by uncertainty and death.

Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…
Pro 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know…
Mat 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will…

who can tell him what is to come?

No person can reliably reveal what lies ahead apart from what God chooses to make known. God alone knows the end from the beginning and directs history according to His purpose. The question exposes the weakness of self-reliance and calls for humility in human plans.

Isa 41:22-23 Let them come and tell us what will happen.…
Isa 44:7 Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case…
Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…

As no man has power over the wind to contain it,

No human strength can restrain the forces God has placed beyond human command. The wind, or spirit (ruach), moves according to God’s will, reminding people that they do not govern creation or their own future.

Pro 30:4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down?…
Jhn 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound…

so no one has authority over his day of death.

Death comes at the appointed time, beyond the reach of wealth, power, wisdom, or human planning.

Job 14:5 Since his days are determined and the number of his months…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…
Psa 89:48 Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?…

As no one can be discharged in wartime,

As no one can be discharged in wartime, so no one can escape the day of death or avoid God’s judgment.

Jer 46:6 “The swift cannot flee, and the warrior cannot…”…
Amo 2:14-16 Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail…
Psa 33:16-17 No king is saved by his vast army; no warrior…

so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

Sin entangles those who persist in it, bringing consequences that cannot be escaped by human effort or self-justification.

Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;…
2Pe 2:19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves…
Jhn 8:34 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…

All this I have seen,

Solomon writes from extensive experience with wealth, labor, pleasure, wisdom, and royal authority. His conclusions rest on a careful survey of life’s realities rather than idealized expectations.

Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…
Ecc 4:1 I looked, and I considered all the oppression under the sun.…
Ecc 2:11 Yet when I considered the works my hands had accomplished…

applying my mind to every deed that is done under the sun;

He has deliberately examined the full range of human conduct in earthly life, including the actions of rulers and those subject to them.

Ecc 1:13 And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom…
Psa 33:13-15 The LORD looks down from heaven; He sees all the sons…
Job 34:21 For His eyes are on the ways of a man…

there is a time when one man lords it over another

Human authority, though ordained for order and justice, is often corrupted by pride, greed, and self-interest. Kings and officials may use their position to oppress rather than protect.

Mat 20:25-26 But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know…
1Pe 5:3 not lording it over those entrusted to you,…
1Sa 8:11-18 He said, “This will be the manner of the king…”…

to his own detriment.

Such rule brings harm to those under it and ultimately places the oppressor under God’s judgment. Power used unjustly cannot escape its consequences.

Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone…
Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…
Pro 11:17 A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble…

Fear God

Then too, I saw the burial of the wicked

Even the wicked could receive honorable burial, a public sign of respect that did not reflect their true character. Their death did not immediately expose the evil they had done.

Jer 22:18-19 Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim…
Job 21:32-33 He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.…
Isa 14:19-20 But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch,…

who used to go in and out of the holy place,

These men maintained a visible connection to the temple and its worship, yet their presence in a sacred setting did not prove genuine fear of God. Religious activity could conceal lives marked by injustice.

Jer 7:9-11 Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,…
Ezk 44:7-9 In addition to all your other abominations,…
Isa 1:12-13 When you come to appear before Me, who has required this…

and they were praised in the city where they had done so.

The same city that witnessed their conduct gave them public honor. Their reputation survived because people either ignored their wrongdoing or valued outward appearance above righteousness.

Pro 28:4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked,…
Jhn 5:44 How can you believe if you accept glory from one another…
Luk 6:26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you,…

This too is futile.

Such misplaced honor shows the limits of human judgment. The wicked may appear successful and respected for a time, but public praise cannot alter God’s knowledge of their deeds or the certainty of His judgment.

Ecc 1:2 “Futility of futilities,” says the Teacher,…
Ecc 12:8 “Futility of futilities,” says the Teacher.…
Ecc 2:11 Yet when I considered the works my hands had accomplished…

When the sentence for a crime is not speedily executed,

When the sentence for a crime is not speedily executed, wrongdoing may seem to carry no consequences. Delayed justice can embolden others to commit evil, especially when rulers or officials fail to act decisively against established guilt.

Psa 50:21 You have done these things, and I kept silent;…
Rom 2:4-5 Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness…
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise…

the hearts of men become fully set on doing evil.

People are emboldened when they believe they can sin without consequence. Israel repeatedly fell into idolatry, violence, and immorality during periods of weak leadership and neglected law. Delayed judgment does not make evil harmless; it often gives sinners confidence to continue and spread it.

Gen 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…
Rom 1:28-32 Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God,…
Pro 6:14 With deceit in his heart he devises evil;…

Although a sinner does evil a hundred times and still lives long,

The wicked may persist in sin and yet appear to prosper, even enjoying a long life. Such circumstances challenge the expectation that justice is always immediate. In Israel’s world, longevity was often regarded as a mark of blessing, making the apparent success of evildoers especially troubling.

Ecc 7:15 In my futile life I have seen both of these:…
Psa 73:3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity…
Psa 37:35-36 I have seen a wicked, ruthless man flourishing…

yet I also know that it will go well with those who fear God,

Despite what is seen in the present, God’s justice remains certain. Those who fear Him acknowledge His authority and order their lives in obedience to Him. Their ultimate welfare does not depend on temporary circumstances or the apparent security of the wicked.

Deu 5:29 If only they had such a heart to fear Me…
Psa 128:1-2 A song of ascents. Blessed are all who fear the LORD,…
Pro 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years…

who are reverent in His presence.

True fear of God is shown in a continuing awareness of His holiness and judgment. The faithful live before Him with humility, worship, and submission, trusting that He will distinguish between the righteous and the wicked.

Heb 12:28-29 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,…
Psa 5:7 But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your…
Exo 20:20 “Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test…

Yet because the wicked do not fear God,

Ecclesiastes contrasts those who live with reverence for God against those who persist in rebellion. Though the wicked may appear secure or successful for a time, their refusal to submit to God places them under His judgment.

Psa 36:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant……
Rom 3:18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

it will not go well with them,

God’s justice is not cancelled by delay. Their outward prosperity cannot alter the final outcome of a life lived against His commands. The Preacher looks beyond temporary circumstances to God’s certain reckoning.

Isa 3:11 Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them!…
Pro 24:20 For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked…

and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.

Human life passes quickly, like a shadow that shifts and disappears. The wicked have no lasting security in their accomplishments or position, while those who fear God rest in His enduring purposes.

Pro 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years…
Psa 144:4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.

God’s Ways Are Mysterious

There is a futility that is done on the earth:

Life in a fallen world often appears disordered and unjust. Solomon observes what people cannot reconcile by human wisdom alone: events do not always unfold according to visible moral deserving. This futility, or vanity (Hebrew hevel), suggests meaninglessness or transience.

Rom 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility,…
Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…
Psa 39:5 You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths,…

There are righteous men who get what the actions of the wicked deserve,

Those who fear God may endure suffering, loss, or dishonor, as Job did despite his integrity. Their hardships do not prove that God has abandoned justice or that righteousness is meaningless.

Job 9:22 It is all the same, and so I say, ‘He destroys both…
Hab 1:13 Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil,…
Psa 44:22 Yet for Your sake we face death all day long;…

and there are wicked men who get what the actions of the righteous deserve.

Those who reject God may enjoy security, wealth, influence, and long life for a season. Their prosperity is not evidence of divine approval, nor does it remove their accountability before God.

Psa 73:3-12 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity…
Job 21:7-13 Why do the wicked live on, growing old…
Mal 3:15 So now we call the arrogant blessed. Not only…

I say that this too is futile.

Solomon calls this apparent reversal futile because earthly circumstances cannot fully reveal God’s judgment. Final justice belongs to God, who sees every deed and will judge both the righteous and the wicked according to truth.

Ecc 9:2-3 It is the same for all: There is a common fate…
Ecc 7:15 In my futile life I have seen both of these:…
Ecc 4:1 I looked, and I considered all the oppression under the sun.…

So I commended the enjoyment of life,

In a world marked by injustice and unanswered questions, enjoyment is received as God’s good gift rather than pursued as an escape from Him.

Ecc 2:24 Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink…
Ecc 5:18-20 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:…
Ecc 3:12-13 I know that there is nothing better for them…

because there is nothing better for a man under the sun

Human wisdom cannot control outcomes or fully explain God’s providence. Within the limits of mortal life “under the sun,” the earthly, temporal perspective apart from divine revelation, contentment is better than anxious striving for what cannot be gained.

Ecc 3:22 I have seen that there is nothing better for a man…
Psa 128:2 For when you eat the fruit of your labor,…
Pro 15:15 All the days of the oppressed are bad, but a cheerful heart…

than to eat and drink and be merry.

Ordinary provisions—food, drink, and gladness—are to be accepted with gratitude. Such enjoyment is not indulgence but contented reception of God’s care.

Luk 12:19-20 Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things…
Ecc 9:7-10 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine…
Act 14:17 Yet He has not left Himself without testimony…

For this joy will accompany him in his labor

Work remains difficult in a fallen world, yet God grants joy that makes labor bearable and meaningful.

Ecc 2:26 To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom…
1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.…
Col 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being,…

during the days of his life that God gives him

Every person’s days are allotted by God. Life, strength, work, and the ability to enjoy them remain under His sovereign hand.

Job 1:21 Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return.…
Psa 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written…
Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above…

under the sun.

Earthly life is temporary and limited, calling for humble dependence on God rather than confidence in human achievement.

Ecc 1:3 What does a man gain from all his labor,…
Ecc 6:12 For who knows what is good for a man during the few days…
2Co 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen…

When I applied my mind to know wisdom

Solomon describes a deliberate and sustained effort to understand life as God has ordered it. Wisdom includes sound judgment, moral discernment, and the ability to live rightly within God’s world.

Ecc 7:25 I directed my mind to understand, to explore…
Ecc 1:13 And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom…
Pro 2:2-6 if you incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart…

and to observe the task that one performs on the earth—

His investigation included the full range of human work, ambition, and responsibility. Even the greatest achievements and busiest labor could not by themselves reveal the lasting purpose of life.

Job 7:1 Is not man consigned to labor on earth?…
Ecc 5:18 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:…
Ecc 3:10 I have seen the burden that God has laid…

though his eyes do not see sleep in the day or even in the night—

The search was exhausting and relentless, leaving little rest; sleeplessness reflects the ceaseless quest for meaning and the burdens of life. Human effort can examine much, but it cannot fully grasp the work of God or explain all that He permits under heaven.

Pro 6:4-5 Allow no sleep to your eyes or slumber to your eyelids.…
Psa 132:4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,
Psa 119:148 My eyes anticipate the watches of night,…

I saw every work of God,

The Teacher considered the whole range of God’s activity in creation and providence. The world displays order, beauty, judgment, and events whose purposes are not immediately visible.

Job 37:14 Listen to this, O Job; stand still and consider……
Psa 104:24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom…
Psa 111:2 Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all…

and that a man is unable to comprehend the work that is done under the sun.

Human beings live within the limits of time, mortality, and partial knowledge. They can observe what happens in the world but cannot see the full counsel of God governing it.

Job 37:5 God thunders wondrously with His voice; He does great things…
Rom 11:33-34 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge…
Job 5:9 The One who does great and unsearchable things,…

Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning;

Careful investigation and experience cannot uncover every reason behind God’s works. Some matters remain hidden because God has not revealed their complete purpose.

Ecc 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.…
Pro 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter…
Job 28:20-21 From where, then, does wisdom come, and where…

even if the wise man claims to know,

Wisdom does not remove human limitations. Those who speak confidently about every outcome or claim to understand all of God’s purposes overreach their place.

1Co 8:2 The one who thinks he knows something…
1Co 3:18-19 Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise…
Pro 26:12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?…

he is unable to comprehend.

God’s wisdom exceeds human understanding. The proper response is humility: people are responsible to obey what God has made known while trusting Him with what remains beyond their sight.

Job 42:3 You asked, ‘Who is this who conceals My counsel’…
Psa 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me…
Isa 55:8-9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways…
