1 Ὅθεν ἀδελφοὶ ἅγιοι κλήσεως ἐπουρανίου μέτοχοι κατανοήσατε τὸν Ἀπόστολον καὶ Ἀρχιερέα τῆς ὁμολογίας ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.
2 πιστὸν ὄντα τῷ ποιήσαντι αὐτὸν ὡς καὶ Μωϋσῆς ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.
3 Πλείονος γὰρ οὗτος δόξης παρὰ Μωϋσῆν ἠξίωται καθ’ ὅσον πλείονα τιμὴν ἔχει τοῦ οἴκου ὁ κατασκευάσας αὐτόν For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.
4 πᾶς γὰρ οἶκος κατασκευάζεται ὑπό τινος ὁ δὲ πάντα κατασκευάσας Θεός (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
5 Καὶ Μωϋσῆς μὲν πιστὸς ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ ὡς θεράπων εἰς μαρτύριον τῶν λαληθησομένων Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future.
6 Χριστὸς δὲ ὡς υἱὸς ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ οὗ οἶκός ἐσμεν ἡμεῖς ἐὰν τὴν παρρησίαν καὶ τὸ καύχημα τῆς ἐλπίδος 〈μέχρι τέλους βεβαίαν〉 κατάσχωμεν but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.
7 Διό καθὼς λέγει τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον Σήμερον ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούσητε Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice,
8 μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness,
9 οὗ ἐπείρασαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἐν δοκιμασίᾳ καὶ εἶδον τὰ ἔργα μου τεσσεράκοντα ἔτη where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did.
10 διὸ προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ καὶ εἶπον Ἀεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοὶ δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’
11 ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου Εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσίν μου As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”
12 Βλέπετε ἀδελφοί μή‿ ποτε ἔσται ἔν τινι ὑμῶν καρδία πονηρὰ ἀπιστίας ἐν τῷ ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ζῶντος Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.
13 ἀλλὰ παρακαλεῖτε ἑαυτοὺς καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν ἄχρις οὗ τὸ Σήμερον καλεῖται ἵνα μὴ σκληρυνθῇ τις ἐξ ὑμῶν ἀπάτῃ τῆς ἁμαρτίας But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
14 Μέτοχοι γὰρ τοῦ Χριστοῦ γεγόναμεν ἐάνπερ τὴν ἀρχὴν τῆς ὑποστάσεως μέχρι τέλους βεβαίαν κατάσχωμεν For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end.
15 ἐν τῷ λέγεσθαι Σήμερον ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούσητε Μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
16 Τίνες γὰρ ἀκούσαντες παρεπίκραναν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντες οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου διὰ Μωϋσέως For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?
17 τίσιν δὲ προσώχθισεν τεσσεράκοντα ἔτη οὐχὶ τοῖς ἁμαρτήσασιν ὧν τὰ κῶλα ἔπεσεν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?
18 τίσιν δὲ ὤμοσεν μὴ εἰσελεύσεσθαι εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσιν αὐτοῦ εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἀπειθήσασιν And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?
19 καὶ βλέπομεν ὅτι οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν εἰσελθεῖν δι’ ἀπιστίαν So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.
