Τῇ ἐλευθερίᾳ ἡμᾶς Χριστὸς ἠλευθέρωσεν στήκετε οὖν καὶ μὴ πάλιν ζυγῷ δουλείας ἐνέχεσθε It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Ἴδε ἐγὼ Παῦλος λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν περιτέμνησθε Χριστὸς ὑμᾶς οὐδὲν ὠφελήσει Take notice: I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
μαρτύρομαι δὲ πάλιν παντὶ ἀνθρώπῳ περιτεμνομένῳ ὅτι ὀφειλέτης ἐστὶν ὅλον τὸν νόμον ποιῆσαι Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
κατηργήθητε ἀπὸ Χριστοῦ οἵτινες ἐν νόμῳ δικαιοῦσθε τῆς χάριτος ἐξεπέσατε You who are trying to be justified by the law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
Ἡμεῖς γὰρ Πνεύματι ἐκ πίστεως ἐλπίδα δικαιοσύνης ἀπεκδεχόμεθα But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the hope of righteousness. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
ἐν γὰρ Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ οὔτε περιτομή τι ἰσχύει οὔτε ἀκροβυστία ἀλλὰ πίστις δι’ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. All that matters is faith, expressed through love. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Ἐτρέχετε καλῶς τίς ὑμᾶς ἐνέκοψεν ‹τῇ› ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι You were running so well. Who has obstructed you from obeying the truth? Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
ἡ πεισμονὴ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος ὑμᾶς Such persuasion does not come from the One who calls you. This persuasion [cometh] not of him that calleth you.
μικρὰ ζύμη ὅλον τὸ φύραμα ζυμοῖ A little leaven works through the whole batch of dough. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
ἐγὼ πέποιθα εἰς ὑμᾶς ἐν Κυρίῳ ὅτι οὐδὲν ἄλλο φρονήσετε ὁ δὲ ταράσσων ὑμᾶς βαστάσει τὸ κρίμα ὅστις ἐὰν ᾖ I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is troubling you will bear the judgment, whoever he may be. I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
Ἐγὼ δέ ἀδελφοί εἰ περιτομὴν ἔτι κηρύσσω τί ἔτι διώκομαι ἄρα κατήργηται τὸ σκάνδαλον τοῦ σταυροῦ Now, brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
Ὄφελον καὶ ἀποκόψονται οἱ ἀναστατοῦντες ὑμᾶς As for those who are agitating you, I wish they would proceed to emasculate themselves! I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
Ὑμεῖς γὰρ ἐπ’ ἐλευθερίᾳ ἐκλήθητε ἀδελφοί μόνον μὴ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν εἰς ἀφορμὴν τῇ σαρκί ἀλλὰ διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης δουλεύετε ἀλλήλοις For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
ὁ γὰρ πᾶς νόμος ἐν ἑνὶ λόγῳ πεπλήρωται ἐν τῷ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” For all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
εἰ δὲ ἀλλήλους δάκνετε καὶ κατεσθίετε βλέπετε μὴ ὑπ’ ἀλλήλων ἀναλωθῆτε But if you keep on biting and devouring one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
Λέγω δέ Πνεύματι περιπατεῖτε καὶ ἐπιθυμίαν σαρκὸς οὐ μὴ τελέσητε So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
ἡ γὰρ σὰρξ ἐπιθυμεῖ κατὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος τὸ δὲ Πνεῦμα κατὰ τῆς σαρκός ταῦτα γὰρ ἀλλήλοις ἀντίκειται ἵνα μὴ ἃ ἐὰν θέλητε ταῦτα ποιῆτε For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
εἰ δὲ Πνεύματι ἄγεσθε οὐκ ἐστὲ ὑπὸ νόμον But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Φανερὰ δέ ἐστιν τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός ἅτινά ἐστιν πορνεία ἀκαθαρσία ἀσέλγεια The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
εἰδωλολατρία φαρμακεία ἔχθραι ἔρις ζῆλος θυμοί ἐριθεῖαι διχοστασίαι αἱρέσεις idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
φθόνοι μέθαι κῶμοι καὶ τὰ ὅμοια τούτοις ἃ προλέγω ὑμῖν καθὼς προεῖπον ὅτι οἱ τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντες βασιλείαν Θεοῦ οὐ κληρονομήσουσιν and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Ὁ δὲ καρπὸς τοῦ Πνεύματός ἐστιν ἀγάπη χαρά εἰρήνη μακροθυμία χρηστότης ἀγαθωσύνη πίστις But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
πραΰτης ἐγκράτεια κατὰ τῶν τοιούτων οὐκ ἔστιν νόμος gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Οἱ δὲ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τὴν σάρκα ἐσταύρωσαν σὺν τοῖς παθήμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Εἰ ζῶμεν Πνεύματι Πνεύματι καὶ στοιχῶμεν Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
μὴ γινώμεθα κενόδοξοι ἀλλήλους προκαλούμενοι ἀλλήλοις φθονοῦντες Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
