When Jesus had finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.1Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς διατάσσων τοῖς δώδεκα μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ μετέβη ἐκεῖθεν τοῦ διδάσκειν καὶ κηρύσσειν ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν αὐτῶν
Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples2 δὲ Ἰωάννης ἀκούσας ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Χριστοῦ πέμψας διὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ
and asked him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?"3εἶπεν αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶ ἐρχόμενος ἕτερον προσδοκῶμεν
Jesus replied to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see:4Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πορευθέντες ἀπαγγείλατε Ἰωάννῃ ἀκούετε καὶ βλέπετε
The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,5τυφλοὶ ἀναβλέπουσιν καὶ χωλοὶ περιπατοῦσιν λεπροὶ καθαρίζονται καὶ κωφοὶ ἀκούουσιν καὶ νεκροὶ ἐγείρονται καὶ πτωχοὶ εὐαγγελίζονται
and blessed is the one who isn't offended by me."6καὶ μακάριός ἐστιν ὃς ἐὰν μὴ σκανδαλισθῇ ἐν ἐμοί
As these men were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?7Τούτων δὲ πορευομένων ἤρξατο Ἰησοῦς λέγειν τοῖς ὄχλοις περὶ Ἰωάννου Τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον
What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? See, those who wear soft clothes are in royal palaces.8ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν ἄνθρωπον ἐν μαλακοῖς ἠμφιεσμένον ἰδοὺ οἱ τὰ μαλακὰ φοροῦντες ἐν τοῖς οἴκοις τῶν βασιλέων ‹εἰσίν›
What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.9ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε προφήτην ἰδεῖν ναί λέγω ὑμῖν καὶ περισσότερον προφήτου
This is the one about whom it is written: See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.10οὗτός ἐστιν περὶ οὗ γέγραπται Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου Ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου ἔμπροσθέν σου
"Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared, but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.11Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐκ ἐγήγερται ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν μείζων Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ δὲ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστιν
From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence, and the violent have been seizing it by force.12ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν ἡμερῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ ἕως ἄρτι βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν βιάζεται καὶ βιασταὶ ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.13πάντες γὰρ οἱ προφῆται καὶ νόμος ἕως Ἰωάννου ἐπροφήτευσαν
And if you're willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.14καὶ εἰ θέλετε δέξασθαι αὐτός ἐστιν Ἠλίας μέλλων ἔρχεσθαι
Let anyone who has ears listen.15 ἔχων ὦτα ἀκουέτω
"To what should I compare this generation? It's like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to other children:16Τίνι δὲ ὁμοιώσω τὴν γενεὰν ταύτην ὁμοία ἐστὶν παιδίοις καθημένοις ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς προσφωνοῦντα τοῖς ἑτέροις
We played the flute for you, but you didn't dance; we sang a lament, but you didn't mourn!17λέγουσιν Ηὐλήσαμεν ὑμῖν Καὶ οὐκ ὠρχήσασθε Ἐθρηνήσαμεν Καὶ οὐκ ἐκόψασθε
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!'18Ἦλθεν γὰρ Ἰωάννης μήτε ἐσθίων μήτε πίνων καὶ λέγουσιν Δαιμόνιον ἔχει
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."19ἦλθεν Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων καὶ λέγουσιν Ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος φάγος καὶ οἰνοπότης τελωνῶν φίλος καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ ἐδικαιώθη σοφία ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτῆς
Then he proceeded to denounce the towns where most of his miracles were done, because they did not repent:20Τότε ἤρξατο ὀνειδίζειν τὰς πόλεις ἐν αἷς ἐγένοντο αἱ πλεῖσται δυνάμεις αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὐ μετενόησαν
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago.21Οὐαί σοι Χοραζίν οὐαί σοι Βηθσαϊδά ὅτι εἰ ἐν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἐγένοντο αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ γενόμεναι ἐν ὑμῖν πάλαι ἂν ἐν σάκκῳ καὶ σποδῷ μετενόησαν
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.22πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ὑμῖν
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today.23Καὶ σύ Καφαρναούμ μὴ ἕως οὐρανοῦ ὑψωθήσῃ ἕως ᾅδου καταβήσῃ ὅτι εἰ ἐν Σοδόμοις ἐγενήθησαν αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ γενόμεναι ἐν σοί ἔμεινεν ἂν μέχρι τῆς σήμερον
But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."24πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι γῇ Σοδόμων ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως σοί
At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants.25Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἐξομολογοῦμαί σοι Πάτερ Κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς ὅτι ἔκρυψας ταῦτα ἀπὸ σοφῶν καὶ συνετῶν καὶ ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτὰ νηπίοις
Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.26ναί Πατήρ ὅτι οὕτως εὐδοκία ἐγένετο ἔμπροσθέν σου
All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal him.27Πάντα μοι παρεδόθη ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπιγινώσκει τὸν Υἱὸν εἰ μὴ Πατήρ οὐδὲ τὸν Πατέρα τις ἐπιγινώσκει εἰ μὴ Υἱὸς καὶ ἐὰν βούληται Υἱὸς ἀποκαλύψαι
"Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.28Δεῦτε πρός με πάντες οἱ κοπιῶντες καὶ πεφορτισμένοι κἀγὼ ἀναπαύσω ὑμᾶς
Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.29ἄρατε τὸν ζυγόν μου ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς καὶ μάθετε ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ὅτι πραΰς εἰμι καὶ ταπεινὸς τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ εὑρήσετε ἀνάπαυσιν ταῖς ψυχαῖς ὑμῶν
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."30 γὰρ ζυγός μου χρηστὸς καὶ τὸ φορτίον μου ἐλαφρόν ἐστιν
