18	Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ ἔξωθεν εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὐ δύναται αὐτὸν κοινῶσαι	And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,	“Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?
19	ὅτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν ἀλλ’ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκπορεύεται καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα	since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)	For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
20	Ἔλεγεν δὲ ὅτι Τὸ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον	And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him.	He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them.
21	ἔσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται πορνεῖαι κλοπαί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι	For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,	For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22	πλεονεξίαι πονηρίαι δόλος ἀσέλγεια ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός βλασφημία ὑπερηφανία ἀφροσύνη	coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.	adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
23	πάντα ταῦτα τὰ πονηρὰ ἔσωθεν ἐκπορεύεται καὶ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον	All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”	All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
24	Ἐκεῖθεν δὲ ἀναστὰς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Τύρου (καὶ Σιδῶνος) Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς οἰκίαν οὐδένα ἤθελεν γνῶναι καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθη*	And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.	Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.
25	ἀλλ’ εὐθὺς ἀκούσασα γυνὴ περὶ αὐτοῦ ἧς εἶχεν τὸ θυγάτριον αὐτῆς πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον ἐλθοῦσα προσέπεσεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ	But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.	In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet.
26	ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἦν Ἑλληνίς Συροφοινίκισσα τῷ γένει καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ἵνα τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκβάλῃ ἐκ τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῆς	Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.	The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27	Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτῇ Ἄφες πρῶτον χορτασθῆναι τὰ τέκνα οὐ γάρ ἐστιν καλόν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ τοῖς κυναρίοις βαλεῖν	And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”	“First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
28	Ἡ δὲ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ 〈Ναί〉 Κύριε καὶ τὰ κυνάρια ὑποκάτω τῆς τραπέζης ἐσθίουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν παιδίων	But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”	“Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
29	Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Διὰ τοῦτον τὸν λόγον ὕπαγε ἐξελήλυθεν ἐκ τῆς θυγατρός σου τὸ δαιμόνιον	And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.”	Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”
30	καὶ ἀπελθοῦσα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς εὗρεν τὸ παιδίον βεβλημένον ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξεληλυθός	And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.	She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
31	Καὶ πάλιν ἐξελθὼν ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων Τύρου ἦλθεν διὰ Σιδῶνος εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὁρίων Δεκαπόλεως	Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.	Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.
32	Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ κωφὸν καὶ μογιλάλον καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιθῇ αὐτῷ τὴν χεῖρα	And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.	There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.
33	Καὶ ἀπολαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου κατ’ ἰδίαν ἔβαλεν τοὺς δακτύλους αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ καὶ πτύσας ἥψατο τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ	And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue.	After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue.
34	καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐστέναξεν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἐφφαθά ὅ ἐστιν Διανοίχθητι	And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”	He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”).
35	καὶ «ἠνοίγησαν αὐτοῦ αἱ ἀκοαί καὶ» εὐθὺς ἐλύθη ὁ δεσμὸς τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλει ὀρθῶς	And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.	At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.
36	Καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ λέγωσιν ὅσον δὲ αὐτοῖς διεστέλλετο αὐτοὶ μᾶλλον περισσότερον ἐκήρυσσον	And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.	Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.
37	καὶ ὑπερπερισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες Καλῶς πάντα πεποίηκεν καὶ τοὺς κωφοὺς ποιεῖ ἀκούειν καὶ [τοὺς] ἀλάλους λαλεῖν	And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”	People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
