1 Καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γερασηνῶν They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 καὶ ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου εὐθὺς ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν μνημείων ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 ὃς τὴν κατοίκησιν εἶχεν ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν καὶ οὐδὲ ἁλύσει οὐκέτι οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο αὐτὸν δῆσαι He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 διὰ τὸ αὐτὸν πολλάκις πέδαις καὶ ἁλύσεσιν δεδέσθαι καὶ διεσπάσθαι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ τὰς ἁλύσεις καὶ τὰς πέδας συντετρῖφθαι καὶ οὐδεὶς ἴσχυεν αὐτὸν δαμάσαι for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 καὶ διὰ παντὸς νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσιν ἦν κράζων καὶ κατακόπτων ἑαυτὸν λίθοις Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 Καὶ ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔδραμεν καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτόν And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 καὶ κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγει Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί Ἰησοῦ Υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ Ὑψίστου ὁρκίζω σε τὸν Θεόν μή με βασανίσῃς And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 ἔλεγεν γὰρ αὐτῷ Ἔξελθε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Καὶ ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν Τί ὄνομά σοι Καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Λεγιὼν ὄνομά μοι ὅτι πολλοί ἐσμεν And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν πολλὰ ἵνα μὴ αὐτὰ ἀποστείλῃ ἔξω τῆς χώρας And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πρὸς τῷ ὄρει ἀγέλη χοίρων μεγάλη βοσκομένη Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 καὶ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Πέμψον ἡμᾶς εἰς τοὺς χοίρους ἵνα εἰς αὐτοὺς εἰσέλθωμεν and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 Καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐξελθόντα τὰ πνεύματα τὰ ἀκάθαρτα εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν ὡς δισχίλιοι καὶ ἐπνίγοντο ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Καὶ οἱ βόσκοντες αὐτοὺς ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς καὶ ἦλθον ἰδεῖν τί ἐστιν τὸ γεγονός The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 καὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ θεωροῦσιν τὸν δαιμονιζόμενον καθήμενον ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα τὸν ἐσχηκότα τὸν λεγιῶνα καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 καὶ διηγήσαντο αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐγένετο τῷ δαιμονιζομένῳ καὶ περὶ τῶν χοίρων And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 καὶ ἤρξαντο παρακαλεῖν αὐτὸν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 Καὶ ἐμβαίνοντος αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πλοῖον παρεκάλει αὐτὸν ὁ δαιμονισθεὶς ἵνα μετ’ αὐτοῦ ᾖ As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν αὐτόν ἀλλὰ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου πρὸς τοὺς σούς καὶ ἀπάγγειλον αὐτοῖς ὅσα ὁ Κύριός σοι πεποίηκεν καὶ ἠλέησέν σε And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν ἐν τῇ Δεκαπόλει ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ πάντες ἐθαύμαζον And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 Καὶ διαπεράσαντος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ πάλιν εἰς τὸ πέραν συνήχθη ὄχλος πολὺς ἐπ’ αὐτόν καὶ ἦν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 καὶ ἔρχεται εἷς τῶν ἀρχισυναγώγων ὀνόματι Ἰάϊρος καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν πίπτει πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
23 καὶ παρακαλεῖ αὐτὸν πολλὰ λέγων ὅτι Τὸ θυγάτριόν μου ἐσχάτως ἔχει ἵνα ἐλθὼν ἐπιθῇς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῇ ἵνα σωθῇ καὶ ζήσῃ and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
24 Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς καὶ συνέθλιβον αὐτόν And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 Καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος δώδεκα ἔτη And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 καὶ πολλὰ παθοῦσα ὑπὸ πολλῶν ἰατρῶν καὶ δαπανήσασα τὰ παρ’ αὐτῆς πάντα καὶ μηδὲν ὠφεληθεῖσα ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον εἰς τὸ χεῖρον ἐλθοῦσα and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 ἀκούσασα 〈τὰ〉 περὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐλθοῦσα ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὅτι Ἐὰν ἅψωμαι κἂν τῶν ἱματίων αὐτοῦ σωθήσομαι For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξηράνθη ἡ πηγὴ τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς καὶ ἔγνω τῷ σώματι ὅτι ἴαται ἀπὸ τῆς μάστιγος And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
