1 After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2 Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. Now Judas, who was betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. 3 So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Judas then, having received a band <i>of men</i> and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Whom are you seeking? Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out <i>into the open</i> and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5 “Jesus of Nazareth, they answered. Jesus said, “I am He. And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them. They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am <i>he</i>. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am <i>He.</i>” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
6 When Jesus said, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am <i>he</i>, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Now then, when He said to them, “I am <i>He,</i>” they drew back and fell to the ground. When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 So He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking? “Jesus of Nazareth, they answered. So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. He then asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 “I told you that I am He, Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for Me, let these men go. Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” Jesus answered, I have told you that I am <i>he</i>: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: Jesus answered, “I told you that I am <i>He;</i> so if you are seeking Me, let these <i>men</i> go on their way.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9 This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.” This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. <i>This took place</i> so that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled: “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10 Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, since he had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 “Put your sword back in its sheath! Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me? So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?” Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12 Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him. So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, So the <i>Roman</i> cohort, the commander, and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him, Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. 13 They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was in their best interest for one man to die in behalf of the people. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
15 Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and <i>so did</i> another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. Simon Peter was following Jesus, and <i>so was</i> another disciple. 16 But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples? “I am not, he answered. The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also <i>one</i> of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. Then the slave woman who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You are not also <i>one</i> of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18 Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself. Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. Now the slaves and the officers were standing <i>there,</i> having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself. It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 21 Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said.” Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest? When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? But when He said this, one of the officers, who was standing nearby, struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me? Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24 Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest. Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples? He denied it and said, “I am not. Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also <i>one</i> of his disciples? He denied <i>it</i>, and said, I am not. Now Simon Peter was <i>still</i> standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not <i>one</i> of His disciples as well, are you?” He denied <i>it,</i> and said, “I am not.” Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden? One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” One of the servants of the high priest, being <i>his</i> kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”
27 Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed. Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. Peter then denied <i>it</i> again, and immediately a rooster crowed. Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
28 Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover. Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter the Praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29 So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man? So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? Therefore Pilate came out to them and said, “What accusation are you bringing against this Man?” So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If He were not a criminal, they replied, “ we would not have handed Him over to you. They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 “You take Him and judge Him by your own law, Pilate told them. “ We are not permitted to execute anyone, the Jews replied. Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. <i>This happened</i> so that the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled. This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33 Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews? So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? Therefore Pilate entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “You are the King of the Jews?” Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 “Are you saying this on your own, Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me? Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about Me?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew? Pilate replied. “ Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done? Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm. Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 “Then You are a king! Pilate said. “You say that I am a king, Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice. Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say <i>correctly</i> that I am a king. For this <i>purpose</i> I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 “What is truth? Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him. Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault <i>at all</i>. Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And after saying this, he came out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no grounds at all for charges in His case. “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews? But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? However, you have a custom that I release one <i>prisoner</i> for you at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I release for you the King of the Jews?” But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 “Not this man, they shouted, “but Barabbas! (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.) They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber. Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. So they shouted again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a rebel. They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
