| 1And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, | 1Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, |
| 2This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. | 2"This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. |
| 3Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: | 3"Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, 'On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers' households, a lamb for each household. |
| 4And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. | 4Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb. |
| 5Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: | 5'Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. |
| 6And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. | 6'You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. |
| 7And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. | 7'Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. |
| 8And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. | 8They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. |
| 9Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. | 9Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. |
| 10And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. | 10'And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. |
| 11And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover. | 11Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste-- it is the LORD'S Passover. |
| 12For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. | 12'For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments-- I am the LORD. |
| 13And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. | 13The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. |
| 14And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. | 14Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance. |
| 15Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. | 15'Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses; for whoever eats anything leavened from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. |
| 16And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. | 16On the first day you shall have a holy assembly, and another holy assembly on the seventh day; no work at all shall be done on them, except what must be eaten by every person, that alone may be prepared by you. |
| 17And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. | 17You shall also observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as a permanent ordinance. |
| 18In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. | 18In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. |
| 19Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. | 19Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an alien or a native of the land. |
| 20Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread. | 20'You shall not eat anything leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.'" |
| 21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. | 21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slay the Passover lamb. |
| 22And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. | 22"You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning. |
| 23For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. | 23"For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. |
| 24And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. | 24"And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. |
| 25And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. | 25"When you enter the land which the LORD will give you, as He has promised, you shall observe this rite. |
| 26And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? | 26"And when your children say to you, 'What does this rite mean to you?' |
| 27That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. | 27you shall say, 'It is a Passover sacrifice to the LORD who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.'" And the people bowed low and worshiped. |
| 28And the children of Israel went away, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. | 28Then the sons of Israel went and did so; just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. |
| 29And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. | 29Now it came about at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle. |
| 30And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead. | 30Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead. |
| 31And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said. | 31Then he called for Moses and Aaron at night and said, "Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the sons of Israel; and go, worship the LORD, as you have said. |
| 32Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also. | 32"Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go, and bless me also." |
| 33And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men. | 33The Egyptians urged the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, "We will all be dead." |
| 34And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders. | 34So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls bound up in the clothes on their shoulders. |
| 35And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: | 35Now the sons of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, for they had requested from the Egyptians articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; |
| 36And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians. | 36and the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have their request. Thus they plundered the Egyptians. |
| 37And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children. | 37Now the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children. |
| 38And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. | 38A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock. |
| 39And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual. | 39They baked the dough which they had brought out of Egypt into cakes of unleavened bread. For it had not become leavened, since they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves. |
| 40Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. | 40Now the time that the sons of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. |
| 41And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. | 41And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, to the very day, all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. |
| 42It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations. | 42It is a night to be observed for the LORD for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the LORD, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations. |
| 43And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof: | 43The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "This is the ordinance of the Passover: no foreigner is to eat of it; |
| 44But every man's servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof. | 44but every man's slave purchased with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat of it. |
| 45A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. | 45"A sojourner or a hired servant shall not eat of it. |
| 46In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. | 46"It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it. |
| 47All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. | 47"All the congregation of Israel are to celebrate this. |
| 48And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. | 48"But if a stranger sojourns with you, and celebrates the Passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near to celebrate it; and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat of it. |
| 49One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you. | 49"The same law shall apply to the native as to the stranger who sojourns among you." |
| 50Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. | 50Then all the sons of Israel did so; they did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. |
| 51And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies. | 51And on that same day the LORD brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts. |
