Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;1Οὐ θέλω γὰρ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν πάντες ὑπὸ τὴν νεφέλην ἦσαν καὶ πάντες διὰ τῆς θαλάσσης διῆλθον
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;2καὶ πάντες εἰς τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐβαπτίσαντο ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ
And did all eat the same spiritual meat;3καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν βρῶμα ἔφαγον
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.4καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν ἔπιον πόμα ἔπινον γὰρ ἐκ πνευματικῆς ἀκολουθούσης πέτρας πέτρα δὲ ἦν Χριστός
But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.5ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν τοῖς πλείοσιν αὐτῶν εὐδόκησεν Θεός κατεστρώθησαν γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.6Ταῦτα δὲ τύποι ἡμῶν ἐγενήθησαν εἰς τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἐπιθυμητὰς κακῶν καθὼς κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεθύμησαν
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.7μηδὲ εἰδωλολάτραι γίνεσθε καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ὥσπερ γέγραπται Ἐκάθισεν λαὸς φαγεῖν καὶ πεῖν καὶ ἀνέστησαν παίζειν
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.8μηδὲ πορνεύωμεν καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπόρνευσαν καὶ ἔπεσαν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ εἰκοσι τρεῖς χιλιάδες
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.9μηδὲ ἐκπειράζωμεν τὸν Χριστόν* καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπείρασαν καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ὄφεων ἀπώλλυντο
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.10μηδὲ γογγύζετε καθάπερ τινὲς αὐτῶν ἐγόγγυσαν καὶ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τοῦ ὀλοθρευτοῦ
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.11Ταῦτα δὲ τυπικῶς συνέβαινεν ἐκείνοις ἐγράφη δὲ πρὸς νουθεσίαν ἡμῶν εἰς οὓς τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰώνων κατήντηκεν
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.12Ὥστε δοκῶν ἑστάναι βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.13πειρασμὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ εἴληφεν εἰ μὴ ἀνθρώπινος πιστὸς δὲ Θεός ὃς οὐκ ἐάσει ὑμᾶς πειρασθῆναι ὑπὲρ δύνασθε ἀλλὰ ποιήσει σὺν τῷ πειρασμῷ καὶ τὴν ἔκβασιν τοῦ δύνασθαι ὑπενεγκεῖν
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.14Διόπερ ἀγαπητοί μου φεύγετε ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρίας
I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.15ὡς φρονίμοις λέγω κρίνατε ὑμεῖς φημι
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?16Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς εὐλογίας εὐλογοῦμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία ἐστὶν τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὸν ἄρτον ὃν κλῶμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν
For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.17ὅτι εἷς ἄρτος ἓν σῶμα οἱ πολλοί ἐσμεν οἱ γὰρ πάντες ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου μετέχομεν
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?18βλέπετε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ σάρκα οὐχ οἱ ἐσθίοντες τὰς θυσίας κοινωνοὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου εἰσίν
What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?19Τί οὖν φημι ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτόν τί ἐστιν ὅτι εἴδωλόν τί ἐστιν
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.20ἀλλ’ ὅτι θύουσιν (τὰ ἔθνη) δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.21οὐ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καὶ ποτήριον δαιμονίων οὐ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καὶ τραπέζης δαιμονίων
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?22 παραζηλοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον μὴ ἰσχυρότεροι αὐτοῦ ἐσμεν
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.23Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα συμφέρει Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα οἰκοδομεῖ
Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.24μηδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ζητείτω ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:25Πᾶν τὸ ἐν μακέλλῳ πωλούμενον ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.26Τοῦ Κυρίου γὰρ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.27Εἴ τις καλεῖ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀπίστων καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:28ἐὰν δέ τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ Τοῦτο ἱερόθυτόν ἐστιν μὴ ἐσθίετε δι’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν μηνύσαντα καὶ τὴν συνείδησιν ⧼Tοῦ γὰρ κυρίου γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς⧽
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?29συνείδησιν δὲ λέγω οὐχὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλὰ τὴν τοῦ ἑτέρου ἵνα‿ τί γὰρ ἐλευθερία μου κρίνεται ὑπὸ ἄλλης συνειδήσεως
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?30εἰ ἐγὼ χάριτι μετέχω τί βλασφημοῦμαι ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εὐχαριστῶ
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.31Εἴτε οὖν ἐσθίετε εἴτε πίνετε εἴτε τι ποιεῖτε πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:32ἀπρόσκοποι καὶ Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε καὶ Ἕλλησιν καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.33καθὼς κἀγὼ πάντα πᾶσιν ἀρέσκω μὴ ζητῶν τὸ ἐμαυτοῦ σύμφορον ἀλλὰ τὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἵνα σωθῶσιν
