“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.1Ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα μὴ σκανδαλισθῆτε
They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.2ἀποσυναγώγους ποιήσουσιν ὑμᾶς ἀλλ’ ἔρχεται ὥρα ἵνα πᾶς ἀποκτείνας ὑμᾶς δόξῃ λατρείαν προσφέρειν τῷ Θεῷ
And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.3καὶ ταῦτα ποιήσουσιν ὅτι οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὸν Πατέρα οὐδὲ ἐμέ
But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.4ἀλλὰ ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὥρα αὐτῶν μνημονεύητε αὐτῶν ὅτι ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν ταῦτα δὲ ὑμῖν ἐξ ἀρχῆς οὐκ εἶπον ὅτι μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἤμην
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’5Νῦν δὲ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐρωτᾷ με Ποῦ ὑπάγεις
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.6ἀλλ’ ὅτι ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν λύπη πεπλήρωκεν ὑμῶν τὴν καρδίαν
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.7ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω ὑμῖν συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐγὼ ἀπέλθω ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ ἀπέλθω Παράκλητος οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐὰν δὲ πορευθῶ πέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς ὑμᾶς
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:8Καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐκεῖνος ἐλέγξει τὸν κόσμον περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ περὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ περὶ κρίσεως
concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;9περὶ ἁμαρτίας μέν ὅτι οὐ πιστεύουσιν εἰς ἐμέ
concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;10περὶ δικαιοσύνης δέ ὅτι πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα ὑπάγω καὶ οὐκέτι θεωρεῖτέ με
concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.11περὶ δὲ κρίσεως ὅτι ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου κέκριται
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.12Ἔτι πολλὰ ἔχω ὑμῖν λέγειν ἀλλ’ οὐ δύνασθε βαστάζειν ἄρτι
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.13ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας ὁδηγήσει ὑμᾶς ἐν* τῇ* ἀληθείᾳ* πάσῃ* οὐ γὰρ λαλήσει ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλ’ ὅσα ἀκούσει* λαλήσει καὶ τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.14ἐκεῖνος ἐμὲ δοξάσει ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἐμοῦ λήμψεται καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν
All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.15πάντα ὅσα ἔχει Πατὴρ ἐμά ἐστιν διὰ τοῦτο εἶπον ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἐμοῦ λαμβάνει καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν
“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.”16Μικρὸν καὶ οὐκέτι θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με ⧼ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα⧽
So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?”17Εἶπαν οὖν ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο λέγει ἡμῖν Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με καί Ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα
So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”18ἔλεγον οὖν Τοῦτο «τί ἐστιν» λέγει Τὸ μικρόν οὐκ οἴδαμεν τί λαλεῖ
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?19Ἔγνω [ὁ] Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤθελον αὐτὸν ἐρωτᾶν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Περὶ τούτου ζητεῖτε μετ’ ἀλλήλων ὅτι εἶπον Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.20ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι κλαύσετε καὶ θρηνήσετε ὑμεῖς δὲ κόσμος χαρήσεται ὑμεῖς λυπηθήσεσθε ἀλλ’ λύπη ὑμῶν εἰς χαρὰν γενήσεται
When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.21 γυνὴ ὅταν τίκτῃ λύπην ἔχει ὅτι ἦλθεν ὥρα αὐτῆς ὅταν δὲ γεννήσῃ τὸ παιδίον οὐκέτι μνημονεύει τῆς θλίψεως διὰ τὴν χαρὰν ὅτι ἐγεννήθη ἄνθρωπος εἰς τὸν κόσμον
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.22καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν νῦν μὲν λύπην ἔχετε πάλιν δὲ ὄψομαι ὑμᾶς καὶ χαρήσεται ὑμῶν καρδία καὶ τὴν χαρὰν ὑμῶν οὐδεὶς αἴρει ἀφ’ ὑμῶν
In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.23Καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἐρωτήσετε οὐδέν ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἄν τι αἰτήσητε τὸν Πατέρα «δώσει ὑμῖν» «ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου»
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.24ἕως ἄρτι οὐκ ᾐτήσατε οὐδὲν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου αἰτεῖτε καὶ λήμψεσθε ἵνα χαρὰ ὑμῶν πεπληρωμένη
“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.25Ταῦτα ἐν παροιμίαις λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὐκέτι ἐν παροιμίαις λαλήσω ὑμῖν ἀλλὰ παρρησίᾳ περὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἀπαγγελῶ ὑμῖν
In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;26ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου αἰτήσεσθε καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν Πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν
for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.27αὐτὸς γὰρ Πατὴρ φιλεῖ ὑμᾶς ὅτι ὑμεῖς ἐμὲ πεφιλήκατε καὶ πεπιστεύκατε ὅτι ἐγὼ παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον
I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”28ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον πάλιν ἀφίημι τὸν κόσμον καὶ πορεύομαι πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα
His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech!29Λέγουσιν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε νῦν ἐν παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖς καὶ παροιμίαν οὐδεμίαν λέγεις
Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”30νῦν οἴδαμεν ὅτι οἶδας πάντα καὶ οὐ χρείαν ἔχεις ἵνα τίς σε ἐρωτᾷ ἐν τούτῳ πιστεύομεν ὅτι ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθες
Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?31Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἄρτι πιστεύετε
Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.32ἰδοὺ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ ἐλήλυθεν ἵνα σκορπισθῆτε ἕκαστος εἰς τὰ ἴδια κἀμὲ μόνον ἀφῆτε καὶ οὐκ εἰμὶ μόνος ὅτι Πατὴρ μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”33ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐν ἐμοὶ εἰρήνην ἔχητε ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ θλῖψιν ἔχετε ἀλλὰ θαρσεῖτε ἐγὼ νενίκηκα τὸν κόσμον
