For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,1Οὐ θέλω γὰρ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν πάντες ὑπὸ τὴν νεφέλην ἦσαν καὶ πάντες διὰ τῆς θαλάσσης διῆλθον
and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,2καὶ πάντες εἰς τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐβαπτίσαντο ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ
and all ate the same spiritual food,3καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν βρῶμα ἔφαγον
and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.4καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν ἔπιον πόμα ἔπινον γὰρ ἐκ πνευματικῆς ἀκολουθούσης πέτρας πέτρα δὲ ἦν Χριστός
Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.5ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν τοῖς πλείοσιν αὐτῶν εὐδόκησεν Θεός κατεστρώθησαν γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.6Ταῦτα δὲ τύποι ἡμῶν ἐγενήθησαν εἰς τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἐπιθυμητὰς κακῶν καθὼς κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεθύμησαν
Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”7μηδὲ εἰδωλολάτραι γίνεσθε καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ὥσπερ γέγραπται Ἐκάθισεν λαὸς φαγεῖν καὶ πεῖν καὶ ἀνέστησαν παίζειν
We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.8μηδὲ πορνεύωμεν καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπόρνευσαν καὶ ἔπεσαν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ εἰκοσι τρεῖς χιλιάδες
We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,9μηδὲ ἐκπειράζωμεν τὸν Χριστόν* καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπείρασαν καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ὄφεων ἀπώλλυντο
nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.10μηδὲ γογγύζετε καθάπερ τινὲς αὐτῶν ἐγόγγυσαν καὶ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τοῦ ὀλοθρευτοῦ
Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.11Ταῦτα δὲ τυπικῶς συνέβαινεν ἐκείνοις ἐγράφη δὲ πρὸς νουθεσίαν ἡμῶν εἰς οὓς τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰώνων κατήντηκεν
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.12Ὥστε δοκῶν ἑστάναι βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.13πειρασμὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ εἴληφεν εἰ μὴ ἀνθρώπινος πιστὸς δὲ Θεός ὃς οὐκ ἐάσει ὑμᾶς πειρασθῆναι ὑπὲρ δύνασθε ἀλλὰ ποιήσει σὺν τῷ πειρασμῷ καὶ τὴν ἔκβασιν τοῦ δύνασθαι ὑπενεγκεῖν
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.14Διόπερ ἀγαπητοί μου φεύγετε ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρίας
I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.15ὡς φρονίμοις λέγω κρίνατε ὑμεῖς φημι
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?16Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς εὐλογίας εὐλογοῦμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία ἐστὶν τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὸν ἄρτον ὃν κλῶμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν
Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.17ὅτι εἷς ἄρτος ἓν σῶμα οἱ πολλοί ἐσμεν οἱ γὰρ πάντες ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου μετέχομεν
Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?18βλέπετε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ σάρκα οὐχ οἱ ἐσθίοντες τὰς θυσίας κοινωνοὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου εἰσίν
What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?19Τί οὖν φημι ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτόν τί ἐστιν ὅτι εἴδωλόν τί ἐστιν
No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.20ἀλλ’ ὅτι θύουσιν (τὰ ἔθνη) δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.21οὐ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καὶ ποτήριον δαιμονίων οὐ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καὶ τραπέζης δαιμονίων
Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?22 παραζηλοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον μὴ ἰσχυρότεροι αὐτοῦ ἐσμεν
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.23Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα συμφέρει Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα οἰκοδομεῖ
Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.24μηδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ζητείτω ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου
Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.25Πᾶν τὸ ἐν μακέλλῳ πωλούμενον ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”26Τοῦ Κυρίου γὰρ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς
If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.27Εἴ τις καλεῖ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀπίστων καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience—28ἐὰν δέ τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ Τοῦτο ἱερόθυτόν ἐστιν μὴ ἐσθίετε δι’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν μηνύσαντα καὶ τὴν συνείδησιν ⧼Tοῦ γὰρ κυρίου γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς⧽
I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience?29συνείδησιν δὲ λέγω οὐχὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλὰ τὴν τοῦ ἑτέρου ἵνα‿ τί γὰρ ἐλευθερία μου κρίνεται ὑπὸ ἄλλης συνειδήσεως
If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?30εἰ ἐγὼ χάριτι μετέχω τί βλασφημοῦμαι ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εὐχαριστῶ
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.31Εἴτε οὖν ἐσθίετε εἴτε πίνετε εἴτε τι ποιεῖτε πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε
Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,32ἀπρόσκοποι καὶ Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε καὶ Ἕλλησιν καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.33καθὼς κἀγὼ πάντα πᾶσιν ἀρέσκω μὴ ζητῶν τὸ ἐμαυτοῦ σύμφορον ἀλλὰ τὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἵνα σωθῶσιν
