Commandments for Holiness

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר (saying), 2  דַּבֵּ֞ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֧ת (the congregation) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֥ (and you shall say) אֲלֵהֶ֖ם (to them): קְדֹשִׁ֣ים (Holy) תִּהְי֑וּ (you⁺ shall be), כִּ֣י (for) קָד֔וֹשׁ (holy) אֲנִ֖י (am I), יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

3  אִ֣ישׁ (Each man) אִמּ֤וֹ (his mother) וְאָבִיו֙ (and his father) תִּירָ֔אוּ (shall fear), וְאֶת־ (and) שַׁבְּתֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths) תִּשְׁמֹ֑רוּ (you⁺ shall keep). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

4  אַל־ (Not) תִּפְנוּ֙ (shall you⁺ turn) אֶל־ (to) הָ֣אֱלִילִ֔ים (the idols) וֵֽאלֹהֵי֙ (and gods) מַסֵּכָ֔ה (molten), לֹ֥א (and not) תַעֲשׂ֖וּ (you⁺ shall make) לָכֶ֑ם (for yourselves). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

5  וְכִ֧י (And when) תִזְבְּח֛וּ (you⁺ sacrifice) זֶ֥בַח (a sacrifice) שְׁלָמִ֖ים (of peace offerings) לַיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), לִֽרְצֹנְכֶ֖ם (for your⁺ acceptance) תִּזְבָּחֻֽהוּ׃ (you⁺ shall sacrifice it). 6  בְּי֧וֹם (On the day) זִבְחֲכֶ֛ם (of your⁺ sacrificing) יֵאָכֵ֖ל (it shall be eaten), וּמִֽמָּחֳרָ֑ת (and on the next day). וְהַנּוֹתָר֙ (And the remainder) עַד־ (until) י֣וֹם (the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י (the third), בָּאֵ֖שׁ (in the fire) יִשָּׂרֵֽף׃ (it shall be burned). 7  וְאִ֛ם (And if) הֵאָכֹ֥ל (being eaten) יֵאָכֵ֖ל (is eaten) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י (third), פִּגּ֥וּל (an abomination) ה֖וּא (it is); לֹ֥א (not) יֵרָצֶֽה׃ (it shall be accepted). 8  וְאֹֽכְלָיו֙ (And the one who eats it), עֲוֺנ֣וֹ (his iniquity) יִשָּׂ֔א (shall bear), כִּֽי־ (because) אֶת־ (-) קֹ֥דֶשׁ (the holy thing) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) חִלֵּ֑ל (he has profaned), וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה (and shall be cut off) הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ (the soul) הַהִ֖וא (that) מֵעַמֶּֽיהָ׃ (from his people).

(Romans 13:8–10)

9  וּֽבְקֻצְרְכֶם֙ (And in your⁺ reaping) אֶת־ (-) קְצִ֣יר (the harvest) אַרְצְכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ land), לֹ֧א (not) תְכַלֶּ֛ה (you shall complete) פְּאַ֥ת (the edge) שָׂדְךָ֖ (of your field) לִקְצֹ֑ר (to reaping), וְלֶ֥קֶט (and the gleanings) קְצִֽירְךָ֖ (of your harvest) לֹ֥א (not) תְלַקֵּֽט׃ (shall you gather). 10  וְכַרְמְךָ֙ (And your vineyard)— לֹ֣א (not) תְעוֹלֵ֔ל (you shall glean) וּפֶ֥רֶט (and the fallen grapes) כַּרְמְךָ֖ (of your vineyard), לֹ֣א (not) תְלַקֵּ֑ט (shall you gather). לֶֽעָנִ֤י (For the poor) וְלַגֵּר֙ (and for the sojourner) תַּעֲזֹ֣ב (you shall leave) אֹתָ֔ם (them). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

11  לֹ֖א (Not) תִּגְנֹ֑בוּ (you⁺ shall steal), וְלֹא־ (and not) תְכַחֲשׁ֥וּ (you⁺ shall deal falsely), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תְשַׁקְּר֖וּ (you⁺ shall lie) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) בַּעֲמִיתֽוֹ׃ (to his neighbor).

12  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) תִשָּׁבְע֥וּ (you⁺ shall swear) בִשְׁמִ֖י (by My name) לַשָּׁ֑קֶר (to a lie); וְחִלַּלְתָּ֛ (and so you shall profane) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֥ם (the name) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (of your God). אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

13  לֹֽא־ (Not) תַעֲשֹׁ֥ק (you shall oppress) אֶת־ (-) רֵֽעֲךָ֖ (your neighbor), וְלֹ֣א (and not) תִגְזֹ֑ל (you shall rob).

לֹֽא־ (Not) תָלִ֞ין (shall remain) פְּעֻלַּ֥ת (the wage) שָׂכִ֛יר (of a hireling) אִתְּךָ֖ (with you) עַד־ (until) בֹּֽקֶר׃ (morning).

14  לֹא־ (Not) תְקַלֵּ֣ל (you shall curse) חֵרֵ֔שׁ (the deaf), וְלִפְנֵ֣י (and before the face) עִוֵּ֔ר (of the blind) לֹ֥א (not) תִתֵּ֖ן (shall you put) מִכְשֹׁ֑ל (a stumbling block); וְיָרֵ֥אתָ (and shall fear) מֵּאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God). אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

15  לֹא־ (No) תַעֲשׂ֥וּ (you⁺ shall do) עָ֙וֶל֙ (injustice) בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֔ט (in judgment); לֹא־ (not) תִשָּׂ֣א (you shall lift up) פְנֵי־ (the face) דָ֔ל (of the poor), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תֶהְדַּ֖ר (you shall honor) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) גָד֑וֹל (of the great). בְּצֶ֖דֶק (In righteousness) תִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט (you shall judge) עֲמִיתֶֽךָ׃ (your neighbor).

16  לֹא־ (Not) תֵלֵ֤ךְ (you shall go about) רָכִיל֙ (as a slanderer) בְּעַמֶּ֔יךָ (among your people).

לֹ֥א (Not) תַעֲמֹ֖ד (shall you stand) עַל־ (against) דַּ֣ם (the blood) רֵעֶ֑ךָ (of your neighbor); אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

17  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִשְׂנָ֥א (you shall hate) אֶת־ (-) אָחִ֖יךָ (your brother) בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ (in your heart). הוֹכֵ֤חַ (Rebuking) תּוֹכִ֙יחַ֙ (you shall rebuke) אֶת־ (-) עֲמִיתֶ֔ךָ (your neighbor) וְלֹא־ (and not) תִשָּׂ֥א (you shall lift up) עָלָ֖יו (upon him) חֵֽטְא׃ (sin). 18  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִקֹּ֤ם (you shall take vengeance), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תִטֹּר֙ (you shall bear a grudge) אֶת־ (against) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) עַמֶּ֔ךָ (of your people), וְאָֽהַבְתָּ֥ (and you shall love) לְרֵעֲךָ֖ (your neighbor) כָּמ֑וֹךָ (as yourself). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

Keep My Statutes

19  אֶֽת־ (-) חֻקֹּתַי֮ (My statutes) תִּשְׁמֹרוּ֒ (you⁺ shall keep): בְּהֶמְתְּךָ֙ (Your livestock) לֹא־ (not) תַרְבִּ֣יעַ (you shall cause to breed) כִּלְאַ֔יִם (with two kinds); שָׂדְךָ֖ (your field) לֹא־ (not) תִזְרַ֣ע (you shall sow) כִּלְאָ֑יִם (with two kinds), וּבֶ֤גֶד (and a garment) כִּלְאַ֙יִם֙ (of two kinds) שַֽׁעַטְנֵ֔ז (of mixed material) לֹ֥א (not) יַעֲלֶ֖ה (shall go up) עָלֶֽיךָ׃פ (upon you).

20  וְ֠אִישׁ (And a man), כִּֽי־ (when) יִשְׁכַּ֨ב (he lies) אֶת־ (with) אִשָּׁ֜ה (a woman), שִׁכְבַת־ (a lying), זֶ֗רַע (of seed), וְהִ֤וא (and she) שִׁפְחָה֙ (is a maidservant) נֶחֱרֶ֣פֶת (betrothed) לְאִ֔ישׁ (to a man) וְהָפְדֵּה֙ (and redeeming) לֹ֣א (not) נִפְדָּ֔תָה (she has been redeemed), א֥וֹ (or) חֻפְשָׁ֖ה (freedom) לֹ֣א (not) נִתַּן־ (given) לָ֑הּ (to her) בִּקֹּ֧רֶת (punishment) תִּהְיֶ֛ה (there shall be). לֹ֥א (Not) יוּמְת֖וּ (they shall be put to death), כִּי־ (because) לֹ֥א (not) חֻפָּֽשָׁה׃ (she was free). 21  וְהֵבִ֤יא (And he shall bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲשָׁמוֹ֙ (his guilt offering) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), אֶל־ (to) פֶּ֖תַח (the door) אֹ֣הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵ֑ד (of Meeting), אֵ֖יל (a ram) אָשָֽׁם׃ (of a guilt offering). 22  וְכִפֶּר֩ (And shall make atonement) עָלָ֨יו (upon him) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) בְּאֵ֤יל (with the ram) הָֽאָשָׁם֙ (of the guilt offering) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) עַל־ (upon) חַטָּאת֖וֹ (his sin) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חָטָ֑א (he has sinned), וְנִסְלַ֣ח (and it shall be forgiven) ל֔וֹ (for him) מֵחַטָּאת֖וֹ (from his sin) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) חָטָֽא׃פ (he has sinned).

23  וְכִי־ (And when) תָבֹ֣אוּ (you⁺ come) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) וּנְטַעְתֶּם֙ (and you plant) כָּל־ (every kind) עֵ֣ץ (of tree) מַאֲכָ֔ל (for food), וַעֲרַלְתֶּ֥ם (then you⁺ shall regard) עָרְלָת֖וֹ (uncircumcised) אֶת־ (-) פִּרְי֑וֹ (their fruit). שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (Three) שָׁנִ֗ים (years) יִהְיֶ֥ה (it shall be) לָכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) עֲרֵלִ֖ים (uncircumcised); לֹ֥א (not) יֵאָכֵֽל׃ (it shall be eaten). 24  וּבַשָּׁנָה֙ (And in the year) הָרְבִיעִ֔ת (the fourth) יִהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) כָּל־ (all) פִּרְי֑וֹ (its fruit) קֹ֥דֶשׁ (holy), הִלּוּלִ֖ים (praises) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 25  וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה (And in the year) הַחֲמִישִׁ֗ת (the fifth) תֹּֽאכְלוּ֙ (you⁺ shall eat) אֶת־ (-) פִּרְי֔וֹ (its fruit), לְהוֹסִ֥יף (to add) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) תְּבוּאָת֑וֹ (its yield). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

26  לֹ֥א (Not) תֹאכְל֖וּ (you⁺ shall eat) עַל־ (with) הַדָּ֑ם (the blood),

לֹ֥א (Not) תְנַחֲשׁ֖וּ (shall you⁺ practice divination) וְלֹ֥א (and not) תְעוֹנֵֽנוּ׃ (shall you⁺ practice soothsaying).

27  לֹ֣א (Not) תַקִּ֔פוּ (you⁺ shall round off) פְּאַ֖ת (the edge) רֹאשְׁכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ head), וְלֹ֣א (and not) תַשְׁחִ֔ית (shall you destroy) אֵ֖ת (-) פְּאַ֥ת (the edge) זְקָנֶֽךָ׃ (of your beard).

28  וְשֶׂ֣רֶט (And a cutting) לָנֶ֗פֶשׁ (for a soul) לֹ֤א (not) תִתְּנוּ֙ (you⁺ shall make) בִּבְשַׂרְכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ flesh), וּכְתֹ֣בֶת (and a tattoo) קַֽעֲקַ֔ע (mark) לֹ֥א (not) תִתְּנ֖וּ (you⁺ shall put) בָּכֶ֑ם (on yourselves). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

29  אַל־ (Not) תְּחַלֵּ֥ל (you shall profane) אֶֽת־ (-) בִּתְּךָ֖ (your daughter) לְהַזְנוֹתָ֑הּ (by making her practice prostitution), וְלֹא־ (and not) תִזְנֶ֣ה (will practice prostitution) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) וּמָלְאָ֥ה (and become full) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) זִמָּֽה׃ (of wickedness).

30  אֶת־ (-) שַׁבְּתֹתַ֣י (My Sabbaths) תִּשְׁמֹ֔רוּ (you⁺ shall keep), וּמִקְדָּשִׁ֖י (and My sanctuary) תִּירָ֑אוּ (you⁺ shall fear). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

31  אַל־ (Not) תִּפְנ֤וּ (shall you⁺ turn) אֶל־ (to) הָאֹבֹת֙ (the mediums) וְאֶל־ (and to) הַיִּדְּעֹנִ֔ים (the spiritists); אַל־ (not) תְּבַקְשׁ֖וּ (shall you⁺ seek after them) לְטָמְאָ֣ה (to be defiled) בָהֶ֑ם (by them). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

32  מִפְּנֵ֤י (Before the face) שֵׂיבָה֙ (of the gray headed) תָּק֔וּם (you shall rise) וְהָדַרְתָּ֖ (and you shall honor) פְּנֵ֣י (the presence) זָקֵ֑ן (of an old man), וְיָרֵ֥אתָ (and you shall fear) מֵּאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God). אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).

33  וְכִֽי־ (And if) יָג֧וּר (sojourns) אִתְּךָ֛ (with you) גֵּ֖ר (a sojourner) בְּאַרְצְכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ land), לֹ֥א (not) תוֹנ֖וּ (you⁺ shall oppress) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (him). 34  כְּאֶזְרָ֣ח (As a native) מִכֶּם֩ (from among you⁺) יִהְיֶ֨ה (shall be) לָכֶ֜ם (to you⁺) הַגֵּ֣ר׀ (the sojourner) הַגָּ֣ר (who is sojourning) אִתְּכֶ֗ם (with you⁺), וְאָהַבְתָּ֥ (and you shall love) לוֹ֙ (him) כָּמ֔וֹךָ (as yourself), כִּֽי־ (for) גֵרִ֥ים (sojourners) הֱיִיתֶ֖ם (you⁺ were) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

35  לֹא־ (No) תַעֲשׂ֥וּ (you⁺ shall do) עָ֖וֶל (injustice) בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט (in judgment) בַּמִּדָּ֕ה (in measure), בַּמִּשְׁקָ֖ל (in weight), וּבַמְּשׂוּרָֽה׃ (and in volume). 36  מֹ֧אזְנֵי (Scales) צֶ֣דֶק (righteous), אַבְנֵי־ (stones) צֶ֗דֶק (righteous), אֵ֥יפַת (an ephah) צֶ֛דֶק (righteous), וְהִ֥ין (and a hin) צֶ֖דֶק (righteous) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לָכֶ֑ם (unto you⁺). אֲנִי֙ (I am) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (brought you out) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (-) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

37  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֤ם (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חֻקֹּתַי֙ (My statutes), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) מִשְׁפָּטַ֔י (My judgments), וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם (and you⁺ shall do) אֹתָ֑ם (them). אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).
