Warnings from Israel's Past

(Numbers 16:41-50; Numbers 25:1-5)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.1For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,1For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;1Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;1Now I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, all passed through the sea,
2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
3They all ate the same spiritual food3and all ate the same spiritual food,3and all ate the same spiritual food;3And did all eat the same spiritual meat;3They all ate the same spiritual food,
4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.4and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.

5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.5But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.5But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
6Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.6Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.6Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.6Now these things became examples for us, so that we will not desire evil things as they did.
7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry."7Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY."7Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.7Don't become idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play.
8We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did--and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.8We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.8Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.8Let us not commit sexual immorality as some of them did, and in a single day 23,000 people fell dead.
9We should not test Christ, as some of them did--and were killed by snakes.9We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,9Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.9Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.9Let us not test Christ as some of them did and were destroyed by snakes.

10And do not grumble, as some of them did--and were killed by the destroying angel.10nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.10Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.10Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.10Nor should we complain as some of them did, and were killed by the destroyer.
11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.11Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.11Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.11Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.11Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us, on whom the ends of the ages have come.
12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!12Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.12Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.12Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.12So, whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall.
13No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.13No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.13No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.13There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.13No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it.

Flee from Idolatry

(Exodus 20:22-23; Leviticus 19:1-8)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
15I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.15I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.15I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.15I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.15I am speaking as to wise people. Judge for yourselves what I say.
16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?16The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?16Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?16The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?16The cup of blessing that we give thanks for, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.17Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.17For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for all of us share that one bread.

18Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?18Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?18Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?18Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?18Look at the people of Israel. Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in what is offered on the altar?
19Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?19What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?19What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?19What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?19What am I saying then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.20No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.20No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.20But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.20No, but I do say that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to participate with demons!
21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.21Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord's table and the table of demons.
22Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he?22Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?22Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?22Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?"

Do All to the God's Glory

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
23"I have the right to do anything," you say--but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"--but not everything is constructive.23“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.23All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.23All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.23Everything is permissible," but not everything is helpful. "Everything is permissible," but not everything builds up.
24No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.24Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.24Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.24Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.24No one should seek his own good, but the good of the other person.
25Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,25Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.25Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience' sake;25Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:25Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience sake,
26for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."26For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”26FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS.26For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.26for the earth is the Lord's, and all that is in it.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
27If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.27If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.27If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience' sake.27If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.27If one of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions of conscience.
28But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.28But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience—28But if anyone says to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience' sake;28But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:28But if someone says to you, "This is food offered to an idol," do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for conscience sake.
29I am referring to the other person's conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another's conscience?29I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience?29I mean not your own conscience, but the other man's; for why is my freedom judged by another's conscience?29Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?29I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person's. For why is my freedom judged by another person's conscience?
30If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks?30For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?30If I partake with thanks, why am I slandered because of something I give thanks for?
31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.31So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.31Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.31Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God's glory.

32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God--32Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,32Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;32Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:32Give no offense to the Jews or the Greeks or the church of God,
33even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.33just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.33just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.33Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.33just as I also try to please all people in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, so that they may be saved.
