The Fifth Plague: Livestock

1  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), בֹּ֖א (Go) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh) וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ (and speak) אֵלָ֗יו (to him): כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים (of the Hebrews), שַׁלַּ֥ח (Send out) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּ֖י (My people), וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ (that they may serve Me). 2  כִּ֛י (For) אִם־ (if) מָאֵ֥ן (refuse) אַתָּ֖ה (you) לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ (to send them out), וְעוֹדְךָ֖ (and you are still) מַחֲזִ֥יק (holding on) בָּֽם׃ (to them), 3  הִנֵּ֨ה (behold), יַד־ (the hand) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) הוֹיָ֗ה (will be) בְּמִקְנְךָ֙ (on your livestock) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that are) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field), בַּסּוּסִ֤ים (on the horses), בַּֽחֲמֹרִים֙ (on the donkeys), בַּגְּמַלִּ֔ים (on the camels), בַּבָּקָ֖ר (on the cattle), וּבַצֹּ֑אן (and on the flocks)— דֶּ֖בֶר (a pestilence) כָּבֵ֥ד (severe) מְאֹֽד׃ (very). 4  וְהִפְלָ֣ה (And will make a distinction) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בֵּ֚ין (between) מִקְנֵ֣ה (the livestock) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וּבֵ֖ין (and between) מִקְנֵ֣ה (the livestock) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יָמ֛וּת (shall die) מִכָּל־ (from all) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) דָּבָֽר׃ (a thing).

5  וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (And set) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מוֹעֵ֣ד (an appointed time), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), מָחָ֗ר (Tomorrow) יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה (will do) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (in the land). 6  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And did) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֤ר (the thing) הַזֶּה֙ (this) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת (on the next day), וַיָּ֕מָת (and died) כֹּ֖ל (all) מִקְנֵ֣ה (the livestock) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). וּמִמִּקְנֵ֥ה (And from the livestock) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֹא־ (not) מֵ֥ת (died) אֶחָֽד׃ (one). 7  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), וְהִנֵּ֗ה (and behold), לֹא־ (not) מֵ֛ת (had died) מִמִּקְנֵ֥ה (of the livestock) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) עַד־ (even) אֶחָ֑ד (one). וַיִּכְבַּד֙ (And was heavy) לֵ֣ב (the heart) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שִׁלַּ֖ח (he did send out). אֶת־ (-) הָעָֽם׃פ (the people).

The Sixth Plague: Boils

8  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) וְאֶֽל־ (and to) אַהֲרֹן֒ (Aaron), קְח֤וּ (Take) לָכֶם֙ (for yourselves) מְלֹ֣א (the fullness) חָפְנֵיכֶ֔ם (of both palms) פִּ֖יחַ (of soot) כִּבְשָׁ֑ן (of a furnace), וּזְרָק֥וֹ (and shall scatter it) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) הַשָּׁמַ֖יְמָה (toward the heavens) לְעֵינֵ֥י (before the eyes) פַרְעֹֽה׃ (of Pharaoh). 9  וְהָיָ֣ה (And it will become) לְאָבָ֔ק (fine dust) עַ֖ל (over) כָּל־ (all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְהָיָ֨ה (and it shall become) עַל־ (on) הָאָדָ֜ם (the man) וְעַל־ (and on) הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה (the beast) לִשְׁחִ֥ין (boils) פֹּרֵ֛חַ (bursting) אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֖ת (with blisters) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

10  וַיִּקְח֞וּ (And they took) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֣יחַ (soot) הַכִּבְשָׁ֗ן (of the furnace) וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ (and stood) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) פַרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh). וַיִּזְרֹ֥ק (And scattered) אֹת֛וֹ (it) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) הַשָּׁמָ֑יְמָה (toward the heavens); וַיְהִ֗י (and it became) שְׁחִין֙ (boils) אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֔ת (with blisters) פֹּרֵ֕חַ (bursting) בָּאָדָ֖ם (on the man) וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃ (and on the beast). 11  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יָכְל֣וּ (were able) הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֗ים (the magicians) לַעֲמֹ֛ד (to stand) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses), מִפְּנֵ֣י (because) הַשְּׁחִ֑ין (of the boils). כִּֽי־ (For) הָיָ֣ה (were) הַשְּׁחִ֔ין (the boils) בַּֽחֲרְטֻמִּ֖ם (on the magicians) וּבְכָל־ (and on all) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (Egypt).

12  וַיְחַזֵּ֤ק (And strengthened) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) לֵ֣ב (the heart) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמַ֖ע (he did listen) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ס (Moses).

The Seventh Plague: Hail

13  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם (Rise early) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning) וְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב (and stand) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) פַרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh) וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֵלָ֗יו (to him): כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים (of the Hebrews), שַׁלַּ֥ח (Send out) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּ֖י (My people), וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ (that they may serve Me). 14  כִּ֣י׀ (For) בַּפַּ֣עַם (at the time) הַזֹּ֗את (this) אֲנִ֨י (I) שֹׁלֵ֜חַ (am sending) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מַגֵּפֹתַי֙ (My plagues) אֶֽל־ (to) לִבְּךָ֔ (your heart), וּבַעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (and on your servants), וּבְעַמֶּ֑ךָ (and on your people); בַּעֲב֣וּר (in order that) תֵּדַ֔ע (you may know) כִּ֛י (that) אֵ֥ין (there is none) כָּמֹ֖נִי (like Me) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

15  כִּ֤י (For) עַתָּה֙ (now) שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי (I could have stretched out) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֔י (My hand) וָאַ֥ךְ (and struck) אוֹתְךָ֛ (you) וְאֶֽת־ (and) עַמְּךָ֖ (your people) בַּדָּ֑בֶר (with the pestilence), וַתִּכָּחֵ֖ד (and you would have been cut off) מִן־ (from) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth). 16  וְאוּלָ֗ם (But indeed) בַּעֲב֥וּר (for reason) זֹאת֙ (this) הֶעֱמַדְתִּ֔יךָ (I have caused you to stand), בַּעֲב֖וּר (in order to) הַרְאֹתְךָ֣ (to show you) אֶת־ (-) כֹּחִ֑י (My power), וּלְמַ֛עַן (and in order) סַפֵּ֥ר (to proclaim) שְׁמִ֖י (My name) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth). 17  עוֹדְךָ֖ (Still) מִסְתּוֹלֵ֣ל (you are exalting yourself) בְּעַמִּ֑י (over My people), לְבִלְתִּ֖י (so as not) שַׁלְּחָֽם׃ (to send them out).

18  הִנְנִ֤י (Behold), מַמְטִיר֙ (I am raining down) כָּעֵ֣ת (about this time) מָחָ֔ר (tomorrow) בָּרָ֖ד (hail) כָּבֵ֣ד (heavy) מְאֹ֑ד (very), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (such as) לֹא־ (not) הָיָ֤ה (has been) כָמֹ֙הוּ֙ (like it) בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם (in Egypt) לְמִן־ (from) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הִוָּסְדָ֖ה (it was founded) וְעַד־ (until) עָֽתָּה׃ (now). 19  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) שְׁלַ֤ח (send) הָעֵז֙ (have brought in) אֶֽת־ (-) מִקְנְךָ֔ (your livestock) וְאֵ֛ת (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לְךָ֖ (you have) בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה (in the field). כָּל־ (Every) הָאָדָ֨ם (the man) וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה (and beast) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (that) יִמָּצֵ֣א (is found) בַשָּׂדֶ֗ה (in the field) וְלֹ֤א (and not) יֵֽאָסֵף֙ (is gathered) הַבַּ֔יְתָה (to the house), וְיָרַ֧ד (and shall come down) עֲלֵהֶ֛ם (on them) הַבָּרָ֖ד (the hail), וָמֵֽתוּ׃ (and they shall die).

20  הַיָּרֵא֙ (The one who fears) אֶת־ (-) דְּבַ֣ר (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) מֵֽעַבְדֵ֖י (among the servants) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (of Pharaoh) הֵנִ֛יס (made to flee) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדָ֥יו (his servants) וְאֶת־ (and) מִקְנֵ֖הוּ (his livestock) אֶל־ (into) הַבָּתִּֽים׃ (the houses). 21  וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (And he who) לֹא־ (did not) שָׂ֛ם (set) לִבּ֖וֹ (his heart) אֶל־ (to) דְּבַ֣ר (the word) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַֽיַּעֲזֹ֛ב (and left) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדָ֥יו (his servants) וְאֶת־ (and) מִקְנֵ֖הוּ (his livestock) בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃פ (in the field).

22  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה (Moses), נְטֵ֤ה (Stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָֽדְךָ֙ (your hand) עַל־ (toward) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens), וִיהִ֥י (and there shall be) בָרָ֖ד (hail) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), עַל־ (on) הָאָדָ֣ם (the man), וְעַל־ (and on) הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה (the beast), וְעַ֛ל (and on) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֥שֶׂב (plant) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field), בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

23  וַיֵּ֨ט (And stretched out) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) מַטֵּהוּ֮ (his staff) עַל־ (toward) הַשָּׁמַיִם֒ (the heavens), וַֽיהוָ֗ה (and YHWH) נָתַ֤ן (gave) קֹלֹת֙ (voices) וּבָרָ֔ד (and hail), וַתִּ֥הֲלַךְ (and went) אֵ֖שׁ (fire) אָ֑רְצָה (to the earth). וַיַּמְטֵ֧ר (And rained down) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בָּרָ֖ד (hail) עַל־ (on) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 24  וַיְהִ֣י (And there was) בָרָ֔ד (hail), וְאֵ֕שׁ (and fire) מִתְלַקַּ֖חַת (coming) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the middle) הַבָּרָ֑ד (of the hail) כָּבֵ֣ד (heavy) מְאֹ֔ד (very), אֲ֠שֶׁר (such as) לֹֽא־ (none) הָיָ֤ה (that there was) כָמֹ֙הוּ֙ (like it) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) מֵאָ֖ז (from the time) הָיְתָ֥ה (it became) לְגֽוֹי׃ (a nation).

25  וַיַּ֨ךְ (And struck) הַבָּרָ֜ד (the hail) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֣רֶץ (land) מִצְרַ֗יִם (of Egypt) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (was in the field), מֵאָדָ֖ם (from man) וְעַד־ (even to) בְּהֵמָ֑ה (beast) וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֤שֶׂב (plant) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field) הִכָּ֣ה (struck) הַבָּרָ֔ד (the hail), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֥ץ (tree) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field) שִׁבֵּֽר׃ (shattered). 26  רַ֚ק (Only) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) גֹּ֔שֶׁן (of Goshen), אֲשֶׁר־ (where) שָׁ֖ם (there were) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), לֹ֥א (no) הָיָ֖ה (there was) בָּרָֽד׃ (hail).

27  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh) וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and called) לְמֹשֶׁ֣ה (for Moses) וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֔ן (and for Aaron) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵהֶ֖ם (to them), חָטָ֣אתִי (I have sinned) הַפָּ֑עַם (this time). יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) הַצַּדִּ֔יק (is the righteous one), וַאֲנִ֥י (and I) וְעַמִּ֖י (and my people) הָרְשָׁעִֽים׃ (are the wicked ones). 28  הַעְתִּ֙ירוּ֙ (Pray) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וְרַ֕ב (too much) מִֽהְיֹ֛ת (for there has been) קֹלֹ֥ת (voices) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God’s) וּבָרָ֑ד (and hail). וַאֲשַׁלְּחָ֣ה (And I will send out) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺), וְלֹ֥א (and no) תֹסִפ֖וּן (longer) לַעֲמֹֽד׃ (you shall stay).

29  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), כְּצֵאתִי֙ (As I leave) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֔יר (the city), אֶפְרֹ֥שׂ (I will spread out) אֶת־ (-) כַּפַּ֖י (my hands) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), הַקֹּל֣וֹת (the thunder) יֶחְדָּל֗וּן (will cease), וְהַבָּרָד֙ (and the hail) לֹ֣א (not) יִֽהְיֶה־ (there will be) ע֔וֹד (anymore), לְמַ֣עַן (in order that) תֵּדַ֔ע (you may know) כִּ֥י (that) לַיהוָ֖ה (belongs to YHWH) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth). 30  וְאַתָּ֖ה (And as for you) וַעֲבָדֶ֑יךָ (and your servants), יָדַ֕עְתִּי (I know) כִּ֚י (that) טֶ֣רֶם (not yet) תִּֽירְא֔וּן (you⁺ fear) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from before the face) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

31  וְהַפִּשְׁתָּ֥ה (And the flax) וְהַשְּׂעֹרָ֖ה (and the barley) נֻכָּ֑תָה (were struck), כִּ֤י (for) הַשְּׂעֹרָה֙ (the barley) אָבִ֔יב (was in ear), וְהַפִּשְׁתָּ֖ה (and the flax) גִּבְעֹֽל׃ (was in bud). 32  וְהַחִטָּ֥ה (And the wheat) וְהַכֻּסֶּ֖מֶת (and the spelt) לֹ֣א (not) נֻכּ֑וּ (were struck), כִּ֥י (for) אֲפִילֹ֖ת (are late crops) הֵֽנָּה׃ (they).

33  וַיֵּצֵ֨א (And went out) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) מֵעִ֤ם (from) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) אֶת־ (out) הָעִ֔יר (of the city), וַיִּפְרֹ֥שׂ (and he spread out) כַּפָּ֖יו (his hands) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH). וַֽיַּחְדְּל֤וּ (And ceased) הַקֹּלוֹת֙ (the voices) וְהַבָּרָ֔ד (and the hail), וּמָטָ֖ר (and the rain) לֹא־ (not) נִתַּ֥ךְ (was poured) אָֽרְצָה׃ (on the earth).

34  וַיַּ֣רְא (And saw) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh) כִּֽי־ (that) חָדַ֨ל (had ceased) הַמָּטָ֧ר (the rain) וְהַבָּרָ֛ד (and the hail) וְהַקֹּלֹ֖ת (and the voices), וַיֹּ֣סֶף (and he continued) לַחֲטֹ֑א (to sin) וַיַּכְבֵּ֥ד (and made heavy) לִבּ֖וֹ (his heart)— ה֥וּא (he) וַעֲבָדָֽיו׃ (and his servants). 35  וַֽיֶּחֱזַק֙ (And was strengthened) לֵ֣ב (the heart) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שִׁלַּ֖ח (did he send out) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) מֹשֶֽׁה׃פ (Moses).
