Amnon and Tamar

1  וַיְהִ֣י (And it was) אַֽחֲרֵי־ (after) כֵ֗ן (this), וּלְאַבְשָׁל֧וֹם (and Absalom) בֶּן־ (son) דָּוִ֛ד (of David) אָח֥וֹת (had a sister) יָפָ֖ה (lovely) וּשְׁמָ֣הּ (and his name was) תָּמָ֑ר (Tamar). וַיֶּאֱהָבֶ֖הָ (And loved her) אַמְנ֥וֹן (Amnon) בֶּן־ (son) דָּוִֽד׃ (of David). 2  וַיֵּ֨צֶר (And was so distressed) לְאַמְנ֜וֹן (Amnon) לְהִתְחַלּ֗וֹת (that he became sick) בַּֽעֲבוּר֙ (over) תָּמָ֣ר (Tamar) אֲחֹת֔וֹ (his sister), כִּ֥י (for) בְתוּלָ֖ה (a virgin) הִ֑יא (she was), וַיִּפָּלֵא֙ (and it was improper) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) אַמְנ֔וֹן (of Amnon) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) לָ֖הּ (to her) מְאֽוּמָה׃ (anything).

3  וּלְאַמְנ֣וֹן (And Amnon had) רֵ֗עַ (a friend), וּשְׁמוֹ֙ (and his name was) יֽוֹנָדָ֔ב (Jonadab) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁמְעָ֖ה (of Shimeah), אֲחִ֣י (brother) דָוִ֑ד (of David). וְי֣וֹנָדָ֔ב (And Jonadab was) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) חָכָ֖ם (shrewd) מְאֹֽד׃ (very). 4  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) ל֗וֹ (to him), מַדּ֣וּעַ (Why are) אַ֠תָּה (you) כָּ֣כָה (so) דַּ֤ל (depressed), בֶּן־ (son) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king), בַּבֹּ֣קֶר (morning) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (after morning)? הֲל֖וֹא (Will not) תַּגִּ֣יד (you tell) לִ֑י (me)?

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) אַמְנ֔וֹן (Amnon) אֶת־ (-), תָּמָ֗ר (Tamar), אֲח֛וֹת (sister) אַבְשָׁלֹ֥ם (of Absalom) אָחִ֖י (my brother), אֲנִ֥י (I) אֹהֵֽב׃ (am loving).

5  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) יְה֣וֹנָדָ֔ב (Jonadab), שְׁכַ֥ב (Lie down) עַל־ (on) מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ (your bed) וְהִתְחָ֑ל (and pretend to be ill). וּבָ֧א (And comes) אָבִ֣יךָ (your father) לִרְאוֹתֶ֗ךָ (to see you), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֵלָ֡יו (to him), תָּ֣בֹא (Let come) נָא֩ (please) תָמָ֨ר (Tamar) אֲחוֹתִ֜י (my sister) וְתַבְרֵ֣נִי (and give me) לֶ֗חֶם (food), וְעָשְׂתָ֤ה (and prepare) לְעֵינַי֙ (in my sight) אֶת־ (-) הַבִּרְיָ֔ה (the food), לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so that) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (-) אֶרְאֶ֔ה (I may see) וְאָכַלְתִּ֖י (and eat it) מִיָּדָֽהּ׃ (from her hand).

6  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And lay down) אַמְנ֖וֹן (Amnon) וַיִּתְחָ֑ל (and pretended to be ill), וַיָּבֹ֨א (and came) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) לִרְאֹת֗וֹ (to see him), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אַמְנ֤וֹן (Amnon) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king), תָּֽבוֹא־ (Let come) נָ֞א (please) תָּמָ֣ר (Tamar) אֲחֹתִ֗י (my sister) וּתְלַבֵּ֤ב (and make for me) לְעֵינַי֙ (in my sight) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) לְבִב֔וֹת (cakes), וְאֶבְרֶ֖ה (that I may eat) מִיָּדָֽהּ׃ (from her hand).

7  וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח (And sent) דָּוִ֛ד (David) אֶל־ (to) תָּמָ֖ר (Tamar) הַבַּ֣יְתָה (to the house), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), לְכִ֣י (Go) נָ֗א (now) בֵּ֚ית (to the house) אַמְנ֣וֹן (of Amnon) אָחִ֔יךְ (to your brother) וַעֲשִׂי־ (and prepare) ל֖וֹ (for him) הַבִּרְיָֽה׃ (food).

8  וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) תָּמָ֗ר (Tamar) בֵּ֛ית (to the house) אַמְנ֥וֹן (of Amnon) אָחִ֖יהָ (her brother), וְה֣וּא (and he) שֹׁכֵ֑ב (was lying down). וַתִּקַּ֨ח (And she took) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּצֵ֤ק (the dough) וַתָּלוֹשׁ (and kneaded it) וַתְּלַבֵּ֣ב (and made cakes) לְעֵינָ֔יו (in his eyes), וַתְּבַשֵּׁ֖ל (and she baked) אֶת־ (-) הַלְּבִבֽוֹת׃ (the cakes). 9  וַתִּקַּ֤ח (And she took) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּשְׂרֵת֙ (the pan) וַתִּצֹ֣ק (and placed them out) לְפָנָ֔יו (before his face), וַיְמָאֵ֖ן (and he refused) לֶאֱכ֑וֹל (to eat). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אַמְנ֗וֹן (Amnon), הוֹצִ֤יאוּ (Have go out) כָל־ (every) אִישׁ֙ (man) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from me). וַיֵּצְא֥וּ (And they went out) כָל־ (every) אִ֖ישׁ (man) מֵעָלָֽיו׃ (from him).

10  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אַמְנ֜וֹן (Amnon) אֶל־ (to) תָּמָ֗ר (Tamar), הָבִ֤יאִי (Bring) הַבִּרְיָה֙ (the food) הַחֶ֔דֶר (into the bedroom), וְאֶבְרֶ֖ה (that I may eat) מִיָּדֵ֑ךְ (from your hand).

וַתִּקַּ֣ח (And took) תָּמָ֗ר (Tamar) אֶת־ (-) הַלְּבִבוֹת֙ (the cakes) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔תָה (she had made), וַתָּבֵ֛א (and she brought them) לְאַמְנ֥וֹן (to Amnon) אָחִ֖יהָ (her brother) הֶחָֽדְרָה׃ (in the bedroom). 11  וַתַּגֵּ֥שׁ (And she had brought them) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) לֶֽאֱכֹ֑ל (to eat), וַיַּֽחֲזֶק־ (and he took hold) בָּהּ֙ (of her) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לָ֔הּ (to her), בּ֛וֹאִי (Come) שִׁכְבִ֥י (lie) עִמִּ֖י (with me), אֲחוֹתִֽי׃ (my sister).

12  וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she answered) ל֗וֹ (him) אַל־ (No), אָחִי֙ (my brother), אַל־ (not) תְּעַנֵּ֔נִי (do force me), כִּ֛י (for) לֹא־ (not) יֵֽעָשֶׂ֥ה (should be done) כֵ֖ן (such) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel). אַֽל־ (Do not) תַּעֲשֵׂ֖ה (do) אֶת־ (-) הַנְּבָלָ֥ה (the disgraceful thing) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this). 13  וַאֲנִ֗י (And I), אָ֤נָה (where) אוֹלִיךְ֙ (could I take) אֶת־ (-) חֶרְפָּתִ֔י (my shame)? וְאַתָּ֗ה (And as for you), תִּהְיֶ֛ה (you would be) כְּאַחַ֥ד (like one) הַנְּבָלִ֖ים (of the fools) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel). וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) דַּבֶּר־ (speak) נָ֣א (please) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), כִּ֛י (for) לֹ֥א (not) יִמְנָעֵ֖נִי (he will withhold me) מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ (from you).

14  וְלֹ֥א (Not) אָבָ֖ה (he would) לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ (listen) בְּקוֹלָ֑הּ (to her voice), וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק (and he was stronger) מִמֶּ֙נָּה֙ (than she), וַיְעַנֶּ֔הָ (and he forced her) וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב (and lay with) אֹתָֽהּ׃ (her).

15  וַיִּשְׂנָאֶ֣הָ (And hated her) אַמְנ֗וֹן (Amnon) שִׂנְאָה֙ (with hatred) גְּדוֹלָ֣ה (great) מְאֹ֔ד (exceedingly), כִּ֣י (so that) גְדוֹלָ֗ה (greater) הַשִּׂנְאָה֙ (the hatred was) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (with which) שְׂנֵאָ֔הּ (he hated her) מֵאַהֲבָ֖ה (than the love) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (with which) אֲהֵבָ֑הּ (he had loved her). וַֽיֹּאמֶר־ (And said) לָ֥הּ (to her) אַמְנ֖וֹן (Amnon), ק֥וּמִי (Arise), לֵֽכִי׃ (be gone).

16  וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) ל֗וֹ (to him) אַל־ (No) אוֹדֹ֞ת (because) הָרָעָ֤ה (evil) הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ (is greater) הַזֹּ֔את (this) מֵאַחֶ֛רֶת (than the other) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשִׂ֥יתָ (you did) עִמִּ֖י (to me)— לְשַׁלְּחֵ֑נִי (sending me away).

וְלֹ֥א (Not) אָבָ֖ה (he would) לִשְׁמֹ֥עַֽ (listen) לָֽהּ׃ (to her). 17  וַיִּקְרָ֗א (And he called) אֶֽת־ (-) נַעֲרוֹ֙ (his servant) מְשָׁ֣רְת֔וֹ (who attended him) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and he said), שִׁלְחוּ־ (Send away) נָ֥א (please) אֶת־ (-) זֹ֛את (this woman), מֵעָלַ֖י (from me) הַח֑וּצָה (outside), וּנְעֹ֥ל (and bolt) הַדֶּ֖לֶת (the door) אַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃ (behind her).

18  וְעָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (And she had on) כְּתֹ֣נֶת (a tunic) פַּסִּ֔ים (of many colors), כִּי֩ (for) כֵ֨ן (such) תִּלְבַּ֧שְׁןָ (wore) בְנוֹת־ (daughters) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (of the king), הַבְּתוּלֹ֖ת (virgin) מְעִילִ֑ים (apparel). וַיֹּצֵ֨א (And put) אוֹתָ֤הּ (her) מְשָֽׁרְתוֹ֙ (his servant) הַח֔וּץ (outside), וְנָעַ֥ל (and he bolted) הַדֶּ֖לֶת (the door) אַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃ (behind her). 19  וַתִּקַּ֨ח (And put) תָּמָ֥ר (Tamar) אֵ֙פֶר֙ (ashes) עַל־ (on) רֹאשָׁ֔הּ (her head), וּכְתֹ֧נֶת (and her tunic) הַפַּסִּ֛ים (of many colors) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that was) עָלֶ֖יהָ (on her) קָרָ֑עָה (she tore) וַתָּ֤שֶׂם (and she put) יָדָהּ֙ (her hand) עַל־ (on) רֹאשָׁ֔הּ (her head), וַתֵּ֥לֶךְ (and went), הָל֖וֹךְ (going on) וְזָעָֽקָה׃ (and crying bitterly).

20  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלֶ֜יהָ (to her) אַבְשָׁל֣וֹם (Absalom) אָחִ֗יהָ (her brother), הַאֲמִינ֣וֹן (Amnon) אָחִיךְ֮ (your brother) הָיָ֣ה (has been) עִמָּךְ֒ (with you), וְעַתָּ֞ה (and) אֲחוֹתִ֤י (my sister), הַחֲרִ֙ישִׁי֙ (keep silent). אָחִ֣יךְ (Your brother) ה֔וּא (he is); אַל־ (not) תָּשִׁ֥יתִי (do put) אֶת־ (-) לִבֵּ֖ךְ (to heart) לַדָּבָ֣ר (thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this).

וַתֵּ֤שֶׁב (And remained) תָּמָר֙ (Tamar) וְשֹׁ֣מֵמָ֔ה (and was desolate) בֵּ֖ית (in the house) אַבְשָׁל֥וֹם (of Absalom) אָחִֽיהָ׃ (her brother).

21  וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (And King) דָּוִ֔ד (David) שָׁמַ֕ע (heard) אֵ֥ת (of) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the things) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיִּ֥חַר (and was hot) ל֖וֹ (he) מְאֹֽד׃ (very). 22  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) דִבֶּ֧ר (spoke) אַבְשָׁל֛וֹם (Absalom) עִם־ (to) אַמְנ֖וֹן (Amnon) לְמֵרָ֣ע (bad) וְעַד־ (or) ט֑וֹב (good), כִּֽי־ (for) שָׂנֵ֤א (hated) אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ (Absalom) אֶת־ (-) אַמְנ֔וֹן (Amnon), עַל־ (upon) דְּבַר֙ (the matter) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עִנָּ֔ה (he had disgraced) אֵ֖ת (-) תָּמָ֥ר (Tamar) אֲחֹתֽוֹ׃פ (his sister).

Absalom’s Revenge on Amnon

23  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) לִשְׁנָתַ֣יִם (after two) יָמִ֔ים (full years) וַיִּהְי֤וּ (that had) גֹֽזְזִים֙ (sheepshearers) לְאַבְשָׁל֔וֹם (Absalom) בְּבַ֥עַל (at Baal-) חָצ֖וֹר (hazor), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) עִם־ (near) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (Ephraim). וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And invited) אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם (Absalom) לְכָל־ (all) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 24  וַיָּבֹ֤א (And came) אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ (Absalom) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), הִנֵּה־ (Behold), נָ֥א (now), גֹזְזִ֖ים (has sheepshearers) לְעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (your servant). יֵֽלֶךְ־ (Let go) נָ֥א (please) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) וַעֲבָדָ֖יו (and his servants) עִם־ (with) עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (your servant).

25  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) אֶל־ (to) אַבְשָׁל֗וֹם (Absalom), אַל־ (No), בְּנִי֙ (my son), אַל־ (not) נָ֤א (now) נֵלֵךְ֙ (let us go) כֻּלָּ֔נוּ (all), וְלֹ֥א (and not) נִכְבַּ֖ד (we will be a burden) עָלֶ֑יךָ (to you). וַיִּפְרָץ־ (And he urged) בּ֛וֹ (him), וְלֹֽא־ (not) אָבָ֥ה (he would) לָלֶ֖כֶת (go), וַֽיְבָרֲכֵֽהוּ׃ (and he blessed him).

26  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) אַבְשָׁל֔וֹם (Absalom), וָלֹ֕א (And if not), יֵֽלֶךְ־ (let go) נָ֥א (please) אִתָּ֖נוּ (with us) אַמְנ֣וֹן (Amnon) אָחִ֑י (my brother).

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), לָ֥מָּה (Why) יֵלֵ֖ךְ (should he go) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you).

27  וַיִּפְרָץ־ (And urged) בּ֖וֹ (him) אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם (Absalom), וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (and he sent) אִתּוֹ֙ (with him) אֶת־ (-) אַמְנ֔וֹן (Amnon) וְאֵ֖ת (and) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס (of the king).

28  וַיְצַו֩ (And had commanded) אַבְשָׁל֨וֹם (Absalom) אֶת־ (-) נְעָרָ֜יו (his young men), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), רְא֣וּ (Watch) נָ֠א (now), כְּט֨וֹב (when is merry) לֵב־ (the heart) אַמְנ֤וֹן (of Amnon) בַּיַּ֙יִן֙ (with wine), וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י (and I say) אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) הַכּ֧וּ (strike) אֶת־ (-) אַמְנ֛וֹן (Amnon), וַהֲמִתֶּ֥ם (and kill) אֹת֖וֹ (him). אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֑אוּ (do be afraid). הֲל֗וֹא (Is it not) כִּ֤י (that) אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) צִוִּ֣יתִי (have commanded) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) חִזְק֖וּ (be courageous), וִהְי֥וּ (and be) לִבְנֵי־ (sons) חָֽיִל׃ (of valor).

29  וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֞וּ (And did) נַעֲרֵ֤י (the servants) אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ (of Absalom) לְאַמְנ֔וֹן (to Amnon) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּ֖ה (had commanded) אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם (Absalom), וַיָּקֻ֣מוּ׀ (and arose) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (of the king) וַֽיִּרְכְּב֛וּ (and they rode) אִ֥ישׁ (each one) עַל־ (on) פִּרְדּ֖וֹ (his mule), וַיָּנֻֽסוּ׃ (and they fled).

30  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), הֵ֣מָּה (they were) בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ (on the way), וְהַשְּׁמֻעָ֣ה (that news) בָ֔אָה (came) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֖ד (David), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הִכָּ֤ה (Has killed) אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ (Absalom) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) נוֹתַ֥ר (is left) מֵהֶ֖ם (of them) אֶחָֽד׃ס (one).

31  וַיָּ֧קָם (And arose) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) וַיִּקְרַ֥ע (and tore) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדָ֖יו (his garments), וַיִּשְׁכַּ֣ב (and he laid down) אָ֑רְצָה (on the ground). וְכָל־ (And all) עֲבָדָ֥יו (his servants) נִצָּבִ֖ים (stood by), קְרֻעֵ֥י (torn) בְגָדִֽים׃ס (with their clothes).

32  וַיַּ֡עַן (And answered) יוֹנָדָ֣ב׀ (Jonadab) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁמְעָ֨ה (of Shimeah), אֲחִֽי־ (brother) דָוִ֜ד (of David), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), אַל־ (Not) יֹאמַ֤ר (let say) אֲדֹנִי֙ (my lord) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַנְּעָרִ֤ים (the young men), בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king), הֵמִ֔יתוּ (they have killed). כִּֽי־ (For) אַמְנ֥וֹן (Amnon) לְבַדּ֖וֹ (alone) מֵ֑ת (is dead). כִּֽי־ (For) עַל־ (by) פִּ֤י (the mouth) אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ (of Absalom) הָיְתָ֣ה (this has been) שׂוּמָ֔ה (determined) מִיּוֹם֙ (from the day) עַנֹּת֔וֹ (that he violated) אֵ֖ת (-) תָּמָ֥ר (Tamar) אֲחֹתֽוֹ׃ (his sister). 33  וְעַתָּ֡ה (And now) אַל־ (not) יָשֵׂם֩ (let put) אֲדֹנִ֨י (my lord) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (the king) אֶל־ (to) לִבּוֹ֙ (his heart) דָּבָ֣ר (the thing), לֵאמֹ֔ר (to think that) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֥י (sons) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king) מֵ֑תוּ (are dead). כִּֽי־ (For) אִם־ (-) אַמְנ֥וֹן (Amnon) לְבַדּ֖וֹ (alone) מֵֽת׃פ (is dead).

Absalom Flees to Geshur

34  וַיִּבְרַ֖ח (And fled) אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם (Absalom), וַיִּשָּׂ֞א (and lifted up) הַנַּ֤עַר (and the young man) הַצֹּפֶה֙ (who is watching) אֶת־ (-) עֵינוֹ (his eyes), וַיַּ֗רְא (and looked), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold), עַם־ (people) רַ֜ב (many) הֹלְכִ֥ים (were coming) מִדֶּ֛רֶךְ (from the road) אַחֲרָ֖יו (west of him) מִצַּ֥ד (on the side) הָהָֽר׃ (of the hill).

35  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יֽוֹנָדָב֙ (Jonadab) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king) בָּ֑אוּ (have come). כִּדְבַ֥ר (As spoke) עַבְדְּךָ֖ (your servant), כֵּ֥ן (so) הָיָֽה׃ (it is).

36  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass), כְּכַלֹּת֣וֹ (as he finished) לְדַבֵּ֗ר (speaking), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (that indeed) בְנֵֽי־ (sons) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) בָּ֔אוּ (came), וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (and they lifted up) קוֹלָ֖ם (their voices) וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ (and wept), וְגַם־ (and) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) וְכָל־ (and all) עֲבָדָ֔יו (his servants) בָּכ֕וּ (wept), בְּכִ֖י (weeping) גָּד֥וֹל (bitterly) מְאֹֽד׃ (very).

37  וְאַבְשָׁל֣וֹם (And Absalom) בָּרַ֔ח (fled), וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ (and went) אֶל־ (to) תַּלְמַ֥י (Talmai) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּיחוּר (of Ammihud) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) גְּשׁ֑וּר (of Geshur). וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֥ל (And he mourned) עַל־ (for) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (the days).

38  וְאַבְשָׁל֥וֹם (And Absalom) בָּרַ֖ח (fled) וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went) גְּשׁ֑וּר (to Geshur), וַיְהִי־ (and he was) שָׁ֖ם (there) שָׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 39  וַתְּכַל֙ (And longed) דָּוִ֣ד (David) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) לָצֵ֖את (to go) אֶל־ (to) אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם (Absalom). כִּֽי־ (For) נִחַ֥ם (he had been comforted) עַל־ (concerning) אַמְנ֖וֹן (Amnon), כִּֽי־ (because) מֵֽת׃ס (he was dead).
