Berean Study Bible The Woman on the BeastOne of the angels who administered the final bowl judgments now leads John to a further vision explaining the fate of Babylon. The scene continues the account of God’s completed wrath against the world’s rebellion. Rev 21:9 Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls…… “Come, I will show you John is summoned to see the judgment God has determined and to receive its meaning through the angelic messenger. Rev 4:1 After this I looked and saw a door standing open in heaven.… the punishment of the great prostitute, The great prostitute is Babylon, the corrupt world power that seduces nations through idolatry, immorality, wealth, and opposition to God. Her prosperity and influence conceal the certainty of her coming destruction. Rev 19:2 For His judgments are true and just. He has judged… who sits on many waters. Her authority extends over peoples, nations, languages, and rulers throughout the world. The waters portray the vast reach of Babylon’s political, economic, and religious influence. Jer 51:13 You who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures…… The kings of the earth were immoral with her, The world’s rulers enter into alliance with Babylon, sharing in her idolatry, rebellion against God, and corrupt pursuit of power and wealth. Their cooperation gives her influence across nations and supports her authority during the final period of judgment. Rev 18:3 All the nations have drunk the wine of the passion… and those who dwell on the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her immorality.” The people under her influence are drawn into the same deception and moral corruption. Like those made drunk by wine, they lose discernment and willingly embrace Babylon’s values, worship, and opposition to God. Rev 14:8 Then a second angel followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen… And the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, John is taken by the angel into a visionary setting where the judgment of Babylon is revealed. The wilderness provides a fitting backdrop for a system marked by spiritual desolation and rebellion against God. Rev 21:10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain… where I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast The woman is Babylon the Great, portrayed as exercising influence over the beast, the final anti-God world power. Its scarlet appearance reflects wealth, violence, and bloodshed. Rev 13:1 Then I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads… that was covered with blasphemous names The beast openly defies God and claims authority that belongs to Him alone, leading the nations into false worship and rebellion. Rev 13:5-6 The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and… and had seven heads and ten horns. The heads and horns represent rulers and kingdoms connected with the beast’s final empire, displaying its broad political power before its judgment. Rev 12:3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: a huge red dragon… The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, Her royal and costly clothing displays the splendor, influence, and political power of Babylon. Though she appears glorious and authoritative, her outward beauty conceals rebellion against God and corruption among the nations. Exo 28:5 They shall use gold, along with blue, purple, and… and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. Her wealth reflects the prosperity gained through her alliance with rulers, merchants, and peoples who benefit from her power. The extravagant display presents Babylon as desirable and secure, yet her riches are bound to idolatry, immorality, and judgment. Ezk 28:13 You were in Eden, the garden of God… She held in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. The cup’s gold makes it appear attractive, but its contents reveal Babylon’s true character. She has intoxicated the nations with idolatry, false worship, moral corruption, and spiritual unfaithfulness to God. Jer 51:7 Babylon was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD,… And on her forehead a mysterious name was written: Her public identification reveals a settled allegiance to rebellion against God. The forehead, associated with thought and will, contrasts with the seal borne by God’s servants. “Mystery” suggests a hidden or deeper meaning. The name discloses her true character beneath her outward splendor. Rev 14:1 Then I looked and saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion… BABYLON THE GREAT, Babylon recalls the ancient center of idolatry, human pride, and opposition to God’s people. In Revelation, it represents the final world power that unites religious corruption, political influence, and material wealth in defiance of God. Rev 18:2 And he cried out in a mighty voice: “Fallen, fallen… THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES She is the fountainhead of spiritual unfaithfulness, enticing rulers, nations, and peoples to abandon true worship for idolatry and compromise. Her influence produces lesser forms of the same rebellion throughout the world. 2Ki 9:22 When Joram saw Jehu, he asked, “Have you come in peace?”… AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. Her corrupting power extends to every practice God condemns, including idolatry, violence, immorality, and injustice. Though she appears powerful and secure, her sins bring her under God’s final judgment. Lev 18:24-27 Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices,…
The Mystery ExplainedHer bloodthirsty condition portrays a system so committed to opposition against God that it has repeatedly persecuted and killed believers. The saints and witnesses for Jesus are those who remained faithful to Christ, even when their testimony cost them their lives. Babylon’s hostility reflects both the historic persecution of Christians and the final rebellion against Christ that will intensify before His return. Rev 6:9-11 And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal… And I was utterly amazed at the sight of her. John was stunned by the contrast between her splendor and her cruelty. The woman appears powerful and attractive, yet her prosperity is bound to violence against God’s people. His reaction underscores the deceptive influence and far-reaching authority of Babylon in the last days. Dan 8:27 I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for days.… “Why are you so amazed?” said the angel. John’s astonishment arose from the woman’s splendor and the terrifying beast that supported her. The angel interrupts to explain that the vision reveals God’s judgment on a powerful religious and political system. Mrk 16:6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed.… “I will tell you the mystery of the woman The woman represents Babylon, a future center of corrupt spiritual influence, wealth, immorality, and opposition to God. Her true character is hidden beneath outward magnificence until God exposes her. Rev 1:20 This is the mystery of the seven stars you saw in My right hand… and of the beast that carries her, The beast represents a final world ruler and the empire under his control. For a time, this political power will support Babylon and benefit from her influence before turning against her. Dan 7:7 After this, as I watched in my vision in the night,… which has the seven heads and ten horns. The beast’s seven heads and ten horns identify a kingdom with historic roots and a future confederation of ten rulers. These rulers will unite under the beast’s authority during the final period of tribulation. Rev 13:1 Then I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads… The beast that you saw—it was, and now is no more, but is about to come up out of the Abyss and go to its destruction. The beast represents the final world power ruled by the Antichrist. Its former existence points to an earlier manifestation of this kingdom, while its absence in John’s day anticipates its future restoration. Its return from the Abyss marks a satanically empowered resurgence that will astonish the world. Though it rises briefly to dominate the nations, its end has already been fixed by God. Rev 11:7 When the two witnesses have finished their testimony… And those who dwell on the earth whose names were not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world will marvel when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet will be. Those committed to the world system will be deceived by the beast’s return and will follow it in wonder. Their names are absent from the Book of Life, the record of those who belong to God. The beast’s apparent restoration imitates resurrection and contributes to the deception, but it cannot overturn God’s eternal purpose or escape final judgment. Rev 13:8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast… This calls for a mind with wisdom. The angel signals that the vision must be understood according to the interpretation he provides, not by speculation. Wisdom is the God-given ability to perceive spiritual truths needed to understand the symbolic language. The imagery identifies real centers of earthly power while revealing their spiritual opposition to God. Dan 12:10 Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined… The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. The seven mountains point to Rome, widely recognized in the first century as the city built on seven hills. The woman represents the great city that exercised influence over the kings and nations of the earth, embodied in John’s day by Rome and anticipating the final world system opposed to Christ. Dan 2:35 Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were shattered… There are also seven kings. The seven kings represent successive world kingdoms that have exercised dominion in the course of biblical history. Dan 2:37-44 You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven… Five have fallen, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece had risen and passed from supremacy. Isa 14:9-11 Sheol beneath is eager to meet you upon your arrival.… one is, Rome held power in John’s day, ruling the Mediterranean world and persecuting the church. Dan 2:38-39 Wherever the sons of men or beasts of the field… and the other has not yet come. A final kingdom will arise after Rome, connected with the end-time opposition to God. Dan 7:23-24 This is what he said: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom… But when he does come, Its ruler will appear according to God’s appointed plan, Dan 11:21-23 In his place a despicable person will arise;… he must remain for only a little while. The phrase “he must remain for only a little while” means that his authority will be brief before God brings his rule to an end. Jhn 7:33 So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer,… The beast that was, and now is not, The beast represents the final world power opposed to God, having once exercised authority, then appearing to lose it before returning in a renewed form. Its recovery recalls the beast’s healed mortal wound and the restoration of its influence. Rev 13:3 One of the heads of the beast appeared… is an eighth king, The beast is also identified with an eighth ruler who emerges as the final expression of the same rebellious power represented by the preceding kings. The number eight, often signifying a new beginning or new order, may point to a final, intensified opposition to God’s kingdom. Dan 7:24-25 And the ten horns are ten kings who will rise… who belongs to the other seven He arises from the line and character of the former rulers, continuing their opposition to God and persecution of His people. Rev 13:1-2 Then I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads… and is going into destruction. Though his authority is briefly restored, his end is certain. The beast and his kingdom will be judged and destroyed when Christ establishes His rule. Dan 7:26 But the court will convene, and his dominion… The ten horns you saw are ten kings These rulers represent a final coalition of political powers that will emerge in connection with the beast’s worldwide dominion. Like the horns in Daniel’s vision, they possess real authority and act together in the closing events of this age. Dan 7:24 And the ten horns are ten kings who will rise… who have not yet received a kingdom, At the time of John’s vision, their kingdoms had not appeared. Their rise remains future to the vision and occurs according to God’s appointed timetable. Luk 19:12 So He said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country… but will receive one hour of authority as kings Their rule will be brief and restricted, granted only for the period necessary to support the beast’s purposes. Though they exercise significant influence, their power is temporary and remains under God’s control. Rev 18:10 In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance… along with the beast. United with the beast, these kings will oppose God’s people and join in the final rebellion against Christ. Their alliance will appear strong, but it will end in judgment when Christ overcomes the beast and all who follow him. Rev 13:1-2 Then I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads… These kings have one purpose: The ten kings form a unified coalition during the final period of rebellion against God. Though they possess separate realms and authority, they act together in support of the beast’s worldwide rule. Psa 83:5-8 For with one mind they plot together; they form an alliance… to yield their power and authority They willingly place their military, political, and governmental power under the beast’s control. Their cooperation strengthens his final empire and prepares the world for its conflict with Christ. Rev 13:2 The beast I saw was like a leopard, with the feet of a bear… to the beast. The beast is the final world ruler who opposes God and exalts himself above all worship. Empowered by Satan, he gathers the nations against the Lamb, but his apparent authority ends when Christ defeats him and establishes His kingdom. Rev 13:12 And this beast exercised all the authority…
The Victory of the LambThe beast and the kings allied with him will openly oppose Christ in the final rebellion against God. Their campaign will be directed against the Lamb, the crucified and risen Jesus, whose authority they reject. Rev 19:19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth… and the Lamb will triumph over them, Christ will decisively defeat every hostile power. His victory, secured through His death and resurrection, will be openly displayed when He judges the beast, his followers, and the nations gathered against Him. Rev 5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold… because He is Lord of lords and King of kings; Jesus possesses absolute authority over every ruler, kingdom, and spiritual power. No earthly king or satanic force can rival His rule. Rev 19:16 And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh… and He will be accompanied by His called and chosen and faithful ones.” Those redeemed by Christ will share in His triumph. Called by God, chosen for salvation, and faithful to Christ, they stand with Him as His people when He overthrows His enemies. 2Th 2:13-14 But we should always thank God for you, brothers… Then the angel said to me, The angel who showed John the judgment of Babylon now explains the meaning of the vision. Dan 8:16-17 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between… “The waters you saw, The waters surrounding Babylon portray the vast world over which she holds influence. Jer 51:13 You who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures…… where the prostitute was seated, Babylon is pictured as ruling over the nations through spiritual corruption, idolatry, and political power. Rev 18:7-8 As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury,… are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues. Her authority reaches people of every ethnic group, nation, and language during the period described in John’s vision. Rev 7:9 After this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count… And the ten horns and the beast that you saw The ten horns are ten kings who join the beast in his final rebellion against God. Though they initially cooperate with Babylon and benefit from her influence, their allegiance shifts as God directs events toward her destruction. Dan 7:7 After this, as I watched in my vision in the night,… will hate the prostitute. Babylon, the prostitute, represents the corrupt religious, political, and commercial system that has drawn the nations into idolatry and rebellion. Though Babylon was historically a literal city known for wealth and immorality, in Revelation it symbolically seduces and deceives the nations. The rulers who once supported her will turn against her, fulfilling God’s judgment and exposing the instability and self-destructive nature of their alliance. Ezk 23:28-29 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Surely I will deliver… They will leave her desolate and naked, Babylon will be stripped of her wealth, power, security, and splendor. Her former allies will abandon her and publicly expose the corruption she had concealed beneath luxury and influence. Ezk 16:37-39 therefore I will surely gather all the lovers… and they will eat her flesh The beast and the ten kings will utterly plunder and devastate Babylon. Their assault will consume all that sustained her greatness and leave her ruined. Mic 3:3 You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off… and burn her with fire. Her destruction will be final and visible. The fire marks God’s judgment on Babylon, carried out through the very powers that had once served her purposes. Rev 18:8 Therefore her plagues will come in one day—…… For God has put it into their hearts God sovereignly directs the ten kings so that their decisions serve His judgment on Babylon. Their actions remain their own, yet they accomplish what God has determined. Ezr 7:27 Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers,… to carry out His purpose The destruction of Babylon is part of God’s fixed plan to judge the corrupt religious, economic, and political system that has opposed Him. Eph 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own,… by uniting to give their kingdom to the beast, The kings will surrender their authority to the beast and form a final alliance under his rule. Their unity will strengthen his power for a limited time. Act 4:27-28 In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate… until the words of God are fulfilled. The beast’s authority and the kings’ alliance will continue only as long as God permits. Every prophetic judgment concerning Babylon and the final victory of Christ will be completed exactly as God has declared. 1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel… And the woman you saw The woman is identified as Babylon, portrayed as a corrupt religious and political power opposed to God and hostile toward His people. Rev 21:9 Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls…… is the great city In John’s day, Rome was the great city ruling the empire and persecuting believers. It also foreshadows the final Babylon, a future center of worldwide rebellion, wealth, idolatry, and moral corruption. Rev 16:19 The great city was split into three parts, … that rules over the kings of the earth.” Babylon’s authority extends over earthly rulers through political power, economic influence, and spiritual deception until God brings her judgment. Rev 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
