Psalms 49

The Evanescence of Wealth

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for use in Israel’s public worship under the direction of the temple’s chief musician, reflecting the established role of song in teaching and proclaiming God’s truth among his people.

Hab 3:19 GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those…
Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…

A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

The Korahites were Levites who served as singers and gatekeepers in the sanctuary. Though their ancestor Korah rebelled against Moses, his descendants were preserved and later entrusted with significant duties in worship. Their psalms often proclaim God’s rule and expose the emptiness of confidence in human strength or wealth.

Hear this, all you peoples;

The summons reaches beyond Israel to every nation. The wisdom that follows addresses realities shared by all people, especially mortality, wealth, and the certainty of God’s judgment.

Mic 1:2 Hear, O peoples, all of you; listen, O earth!…
Isa 34:1 Come near, O nations, to listen; pay attention, O peoples.…
Deu 32:1 Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth…

listen, all inhabitants of the world,

The repeated call demands careful attention from every class and nation. No one is exempt from the limits of earthly riches or from dependence upon God, who alone can redeem human life from death.

Psa 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people…
Isa 18:3 All you people of the world and dwellers of the earth…
Isa 26:9 My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit…

both low and high,

The call extends across every rank of society, from the overlooked and powerless to those of prominence and influence. Social standing does not exempt anyone from the realities of mortality, judgment, or the need for godly wisdom.

Psa 62:9 Lowborn men are but a vapor; the exalted are but a lie.…
1Sa 2:7-8 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.…
Rom 2:11 For God does not show favoritism.

rich and poor alike.

Wealth and poverty alike cannot alter a person’s standing before God. The psalm addresses the temptation to trust in riches and reminds all people that material prosperity cannot purchase redemption or escape death.

Pro 22:2 The rich and the poor have this in common:…
Job 34:19 who is not partial to princes and does not favor…
Jas 2:1-4 My brothers, as you hold out your faith…

My mouth will impart wisdom,

The psalmist speaks as one prepared to instruct God’s people in truths that guide righteous living. In Israel, wisdom was preserved and shared through teaching, songs, and public reflection on God’s works.

Pro 10:31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,…
Psa 37:30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom…
Pro 18:4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;…

and the meditation of my heart

His words arise from careful inward consideration, not empty speech. The heart encompasses thought, purpose, and desire, showing that true instruction must be rooted in a mind shaped by God’s truth.

Psa 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart…
Luk 2:19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them…
Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,…

will bring understanding.

Such reflection leads to discernment about life under God’s rule. Understanding includes the ability to recognize what is right, to see human circumstances rightly, and to respond according to God’s purposes.

Pro 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth…
Pro 14:33 Wisdom rests in the heart of the discerning;…
Pro 18:15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge…

I will incline my ear to a proverb;

The psalmist first submits himself to the wisdom he is about to proclaim, giving careful attention to God’s truth about wealth, death, and the destiny of mankind.

Pro 1:6 by understanding the proverbs and parables,…
Psa 78:2 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden…
Ezk 17:2 Son of man, pose a riddle; speak a parable…

I will express my riddle with the harp:

Accompanied by harp music, he presents a riddle—a deeper truth requiring contemplation—in a memorable form: earthly riches cannot ransom a soul or prevent death, but God alone has power to redeem His people.

1Ch 25:1 Additionally, David and the commanders of the army…
1Sa 10:5 After that you will come to Gibeah of God,…
2Ki 3:15 But now, bring me a harpist.” And while the harpist played…

Why should I fear in times of trouble,

The sons of Korah consider the distress caused by powerful and wealthy oppressors. Trouble does not remove the righteous from God’s rule, and human wealth cannot secure life or prevent death.

Psa 46:1-2 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
Psa 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.…

when wicked usurpers surround me?

Though deceitful men may seem to prevail and press in on those they wrong, their success is temporary. God alone can redeem a life from the grave, while those who trust in riches and injustice ultimately perish.

Psa 17:9-12 from the wicked who assail me, …
Psa 118:10-12 All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD…
Psa 22:12-13 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.…

They trust in their wealth

Wealth in Israel included land, livestock, crops, servants, and precious metals. Such possessions could provide influence and temporary stability, but they could not prevent death or secure a person’s standing before God. Those who rely on material abundance treat it as a refuge, though it cannot deliver them from judgment.

Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…
Psa 52:7 Look at the man who did not make God his refuge,…
1Ti 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…

and boast in their great riches.

Public displays of wealth often reinforced social status and power over the poor. The wealthy may have considered their prosperity proof of personal strength or lasting security, but the psalm exposes the limits of such confidence. Riches cannot purchase redemption, preserve life, or alter God’s righteous judgment.

Jer 9:23 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man…
Deu 8:17-18 You might say in your heart, “The power and strength”…
Luk 12:19-21 Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things…

No man can possibly redeem his brother

Human beings cannot deliver one another from sin, death, or God’s judgment. The kinsman-redeemer provisions in Israel’s law addressed earthly losses such as property, debt, or family inheritance, but no relative could secure eternal life for another. Every person stands accountable before God and shares the same need for redemption.

Mat 16:26-27 What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world…
Pro 11:4 Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,…
Isa 52:3 For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing,…

or pay his ransom to God.

No amount of wealth or human effort can satisfy the price of release from sin and death. God alone can provide the redemption humanity cannot obtain. Jesus Christ fulfilled this need by giving His life as the ransom that reconciles sinners to God.

Exo 30:12-16 When you take a census of the Israelites…
Num 35:31-32 You are not to accept a ransom for the life of a murderer…
1Ti 2:6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony…

For the redemption of his soul is costly,

No earthly wealth can purchase a life from death or secure a person’s standing before God. Israel’s sacrifices taught that sin required the shedding of blood, yet animal offerings could not finally remove sin. They pointed to the greater sacrifice God would provide in Christ, whose death alone paid the price human beings could never pay.

1Pe 1:18-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things…
Job 36:18 Be careful that no one lures you with riches;…
Mat 16:26 What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world…

and never can payment suffice,

Riches, status, and human effort cannot ransom anyone from the grave or obtain eternal life. Salvation rests on God’s provision, not on what a person can offer. The psalm exposes the limits of wealth and directs attention to the Lord, who alone has power to redeem His people from death.

Ezk 7:19 They will throw their silver into the streets…
Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able…
Pro 11:4 Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,…

that he should live on forever

Human longing for unending life cannot overcome the sentence of death brought by sin. Neither wealth, status, nor human effort can secure immortality or redeem a life from God’s judgment.

Jhn 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”…
Rev 1:18 the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive…
Heb 7:16 one who has become a priest not by a law of succession,…

and not see decay.

Physical death leads to the grave and the corruption of the body. The psalm exposes the limits of earthly power while pointing beyond death to the hope God provides for those who belong to Him.

Psa 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol…
Act 2:27 You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will…
Act 13:35-37 So also, He says in another Psalm: ‘’…

For it is clear that wise men die,

Wisdom brings insight for life but cannot prevent death. Even the most discerning people remain subject to God’s appointed order for mankind.

Ecc 2:16 For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise,…
Ecc 9:2 It is the same for all: There is a common fate…

and the foolish and the senseless both perish

Death makes no distinction between those who live with understanding and those who reject it. Human standing, ability, and reputation cannot change this common end.

Pro 1:32 For the waywardness of the simple will slay them…
Ecc 9:3 This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun:…

and leave their wealth to others.

Possessions accumulated over a lifetime pass into the hands of heirs or strangers. Wealth may provide temporary security, but it cannot accompany a person beyond the grave.

Ecc 2:18-19 I hated all for which I had toiled under the sun,…
Psa 39:6 Surely every man goes about like a phantom;…

Their graves are their eternal homes—

Death brings every earthly ambition to the same end. Family tombs in Israel often became burial places for generations, yet they marked the limits of human life rather than enduring achievement.

Ecc 12:5 when men fear the heights and dangers of the road……
Job 17:13-16 If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed…
Job 30:23 Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death,…

their dwellings for endless generations—

The wealthy may expect their estates and households to preserve their memory, but death makes the grave their only lasting dwelling in this world.

Luk 16:9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends…
2Co 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in…
Psa 90:1 A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been…

even though their lands were their namesakes.

Naming lands or cities after oneself could express a desire for lasting honor and influence, but neither property nor reputation can secure a permanent place among the living.

Num 32:42 And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages…
Jos 19:47 Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost…
Gen 4:17 And Cain had relations with his wife…

But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure;

Wealth cannot preserve a person from death or secure lasting significance. Honor, possessions, and influence all fail before the certainty of mortality.

1Ti 6:7 For we brought nothing into the world…
Pro 11:4 Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,…
Ecc 5:15 As a man came from his mother’s womb, so he will depart…

he is like the beasts that perish.

Apart from God, humanity shares the same earthly end as the animals. The comparison humbles human pride and directs attention to the only hope beyond death: the life God gives to those who trust in Him.

Ecc 3:19-20 For the fates of both men and beasts are the same:…
2Pe 2:12 These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct…
Job 14:10 But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last…

This is the fate of the foolish

Those who trust in wealth, status, or themselves cannot escape death or secure redemption. Their confidence ends in the grave.

Pro 1:32 For the waywardness of the simple will slay them…
Pro 10:21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die…
Pro 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end…

and their followers

Those who embrace the same proud outlook share its ruin, accepting false security instead of God’s truth.

2Pe 2:2 Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them…
Pro 1:15 my son, do not walk the road with them…
Pro 13:20 He who walks with the wise will become wise,…

who endorse their sayings.

Approval gives strength to empty claims and spreads the error of those who boast in what cannot save.

Jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule…
Rom 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree…
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate…

Selah

The pause calls for sober reflection on where such confidence leads.

Psa 73:17 until I entered God’s sanctuary; then I discerned their end.
Psa 37:38 But the transgressors will all be destroyed;…
Pro 24:20 For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked…

Like sheep they are destined for Sheol.

The wicked move toward death as helplessly as sheep driven to slaughter. Their wealth, influence, and confidence cannot alter the certainty of judgment or preserve them from the grave.

Psa 44:22 Yet for Your sake we face death all day long;…
Job 21:13 They spend their days in prosperity and go down to Sheol…
Pro 5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to Sheol.

Death will be their shepherd.

Rather than enjoying the care and protection of the Lord, they are led by death into Sheol, stripped of the security they sought in earthly success.

Rom 5:14 Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses,…
Heb 2:14 Now since the children have flesh and blood,…
Rev 6:8 Then I looked and saw a pale green horse.…

The upright will rule them in the morning,

Morning portrays the time of God’s vindication, when the present advantage of the wicked is reversed and the righteous are openly established.

Dan 7:18 But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom…
1Co 6:2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?…
Rev 2:26-27 And to the one who overcomes and continues in My work…

and their form will decay in Sheol,

Death consumes the body and ends every claim to lasting earthly power. What appeared strong and permanent is reduced to corruption.

Job 17:13-16 If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed…
Psa 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol…
Act 2:31 Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection…

far from their lofty abode.

Their grand homes and elevated status remain behind, unable to follow them into death or deliver them from its power.

Isa 14:13-15 You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens…”…
Oba 1:3-4 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…
Job 20:6-7 Though his arrogance reaches the heavens,…

But God will redeem my life from Sheol,

God alone has power over death and the grave. In contrast to those who trust in wealth and perish without hope, the psalmist rests in God’s ability to rescue him from the realm of the dead and preserve him beyond death.

Hos 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol;…
Psa 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol…
Job 33:28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit,…

for He will surely take me to Himself.

The psalmist expects not merely escape from death’s power but fellowship with God. His confidence rests in God’s faithfulness and anticipates the resurrection hope fulfilled through Christ’s victory over death.

Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back…
Gen 5:24 Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more…
2Ki 2:11 As they were walking along and talking together,…

Selah

The pause calls for sober reflection on the certainty of God’s redemption and the contrast between those who belong to Him and those who perish in their self-reliance.

Psa 73:24 You guide me with Your counsel, and later receive me…
Job 19:25-27 But I know that my Redeemer lives…
Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…

Do not be afraid when a man grows rich,

Wealth can appear to give a person power, security, and influence, especially when others struggle. Yet riches do not place anyone beyond God’s rule or alter His justice. Material prosperity is temporary and cannot preserve a person from death or secure lasting honor.

Psa 37:1 Of David. Do not fret over those who do evil;…
Psa 62:10 Place no trust in extortion or false hope in stolen goods.…
Psa 52:7 Look at the man who did not make God his refuge,…

when the splendor of his house increases.

A prosperous household, marked by fine possessions and public display, was a visible sign of status in the ancient world. Such splendor may impress others, but it cannot endure beyond this life. Earthly success is not the measure of a person’s standing before God.

Job 21:7-13 Why do the wicked live on, growing old…
Psa 73:3-5 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity…
Jer 12:1 Righteous are You, O LORD, when I plead before You.…

For when he dies,

For when he dies, every human life comes to its appointed end, regardless of status, success, or possessions.

Job 14:10 But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last…
Psa 146:4 When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground;…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…

he will carry nothing away;

All that a person has accumulated remains behind at death and cannot provide lasting security beyond the grave.

1Ti 6:7 For we brought nothing into the world…
Ecc 5:15 As a man came from his mother’s womb, so he will depart…
Job 1:21 Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return.…

his abundance will not follow him down.

Wealth, honor, and earthly influence cannot alter one’s standing before God or accompany the dead into Sheol.

Psa 39:6 Surely every man goes about like a phantom;…
Ecc 2:18-19 I hated all for which I had toiled under the sun,…
Luk 12:20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night…

Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul—

The wealthy man congratulates himself on his comfort, security, and success, treating earthly prosperity as proof that all is well. Yet his life is brief, and possessions cannot preserve him from death or secure his standing before God.

Deu 29:19 because when such a person hears the words…
Luk 12:19 Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things…
Isa 22:13 But look, there is joy and gladness, butchering of…

and men praise you when you prosper—

Public admiration often follows wealth and achievement, but such praise is temporary and may ignore a person’s true spiritual condition. Human approval cannot alter the certainty of death or replace the blessing that comes from God.

Luk 6:26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you,…
Jhn 12:43 For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Jhn 5:44 How can you believe if you accept glory from one another…

he will join the generation of his fathers,

He will die as his ancestors did, regardless of wealth, honor, or influence. Death places every generation under the same judgment of human mortality, exposing the limits of earthly prosperity.

Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
Gen 35:29 Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered…
1Ki 2:10 Then David rested with his fathers and was buried…

who will never see the light of day.

The dead no longer participate in the life of this world. Their loss of light underscores the finality of death and the inability of riches to preserve life or secure deliverance from the grave.

Job 3:16 Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child,…
Ecc 6:5 The child, though neither seeing the sun nor knowing anything…
Job 18:18 He is driven from light into darkness…

A man who has riches without understanding

Wealth cannot shield anyone from death or secure a lasting inheritance. Though riches may suggest security and honor, a person who lives without reverence for God fails to grasp life’s true purpose and eternal accountability.

Luk 12:15-21 And he said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves…
1Ti 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…

is like the beasts that perish.

Both man and beast return to dust, but man is uniquely responsible before God. Riches without spiritual understanding leave a person unprepared for judgment and unable to escape the same earthly end as animals.

Ecc 3:19-21 For the fates of both men and beasts are the same:…
Psa 73:22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast…
2Pe 2:12 These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct…
