The Broken Jar

This is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah delivers God’s own command, carrying divine authority and preparing the people for a public sign of coming judgment.

2Ki 20:1 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…
Isa 38:1 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…
1Ki 13:2 And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD,…

“Go and buy a clay jar from a potter.

The jar would serve as an object lesson for Judah. Like a finished clay vessel, the nation had been formed and established by God, yet its persistent rebellion had brought it to the point of breaking.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…
Isa 45:9 Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker—one clay pot…

Take some of the elders of the people and leaders of the priests,

Civil and religious leaders were called to witness the act because they shared responsibility for the nation’s direction and would carry the warning back to the people.

Luk 22:66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people,…
Mat 26:3 At that time the chief priests and elders of the people…
Act 4:5-6 The next day the rulers, elders, and scribes…

and go out to the Valley of Ben-hinnom

Southwest of Jerusalem, this valley had been defiled by idolatry and the sacrifice of children to Molech. Its history of covenant rebellion made it a fitting setting for Jeremiah’s announcement of coming judgment. In later Jewish thought, the valley became associated with divine punishment.

Jer 7:31-32 They have built the high places of Topheth…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
2Ch 33:6 He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…

near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate.

This gate stood near an area connected with pottery and discarded shards. Its setting anticipates the sign Jeremiah would soon perform, portraying Jerusalem as a vessel broken beyond repair because of persistent sin.

Neh 3:13-14 The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the residents…
Jer 18:2-4 Go down at once to the potter’s house, and there……
Isa 30:14 It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar…

Proclaim there the words I speak to you,

Jeremiah was to deliver the Lord’s message publicly at a place that testified to Judah’s past abominations and approaching ruin. He spoke not on his own authority but as God’s appointed messenger, warning the people of judgment they had brought upon themselves.

Jer 1:7-9 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Ezk 3:10-11 “Son of man,” He added, “listen carefully…”…
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem.

God’s warning was directed to Judah’s rulers and the people of Jerusalem alike. Those entrusted with leadership had helped lead the nation into idolatry and injustice, while the population had shared in its rebellion. All were accountable to hear and respond to the Lord’s message.

Jer 17:20 Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah,…
Isa 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom;…

This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

The covenant God of Israel spoke with the authority of the Lord over all heavenly powers. Though Judah belonged to Him by covenant, that relationship did not shield the nation from judgment when it persistently rejected His commands.

1Ki 14:7 Go, tell Jeroboam that this is what the LORD says:…
2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…

I am going to bring such disaster on this place

Jerusalem, including the areas surrounding it, would face devastating judgment because of its idolatry, bloodshed, and abandonment of the Lord. The warning anticipated the destruction later brought by Babylon.

Jer 11:11 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring…
1Ki 9:8 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,…

that the ears of all who hear of it will ring,

The calamity would be so horrifying that reports of it would shock everyone who heard. Jerusalem’s fall would stand as a public display of God’s judgment against continued covenant rebellion.

1Sa 3:11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something…
2Ki 21:12 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…

because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place.

Judah had forsaken the covenant God who claimed both the people and the land as His own. Through idolatry, the place set apart for worship and obedience had become polluted and alien to Yahweh.

Jer 2:7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit…
Jer 2:13 For My people have committed two evils:……
Lev 18:24-28 Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices,…

They have burned incense in this place to other gods

The Valley of Ben Hinnom had become a center of pagan worship, where Judah adopted practices God had forbidden. Their offerings honored false gods instead of the Lord.

Jer 7:9 Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,…
2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
1Ki 11:8 He did the same for all his foreign wives,…

that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have ever known.

These were foreign deities, not part of the worship God established for Israel. The nation’s leaders shared responsibility for allowing and promoting this rebellion.

Jer 44:3 They provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn incense…
Deu 13:6-7 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter,…
Deu 32:17 They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to newly arrived gods…

They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

The innocent blood included children sacrificed in pagan rites. Such violence defiled the land and brought God’s judgment upon Judah.

Jer 7:6 if you no longer oppress the foreigner and the fatherless…
2Ki 21:16 Moreover, Manasseh shed so much innocent blood…
Psa 106:38 They shed innocent blood—the blood of their sons…

They have built high places to Baal

Elevated shrines throughout Judah became centers of pagan worship. Baal, a Canaanite storm and fertility god, was honored through rites that directly rejected Israel’s covenant loyalty to Yahweh.

2Ch 33:3 For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah…
2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
1Ki 14:23-24 They also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars,…

on which to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal—

The people adopted one of the most detestable practices of surrounding nations: offering their own children in fire. Such sacrifices revealed the full extent of Judah’s idolatry and moral collapse.

Deu 12:31 You must not worship the LORD your God in this way,…
Deu 18:10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son…
Lev 18:21 You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed…

something I never commanded or mentioned,

God had forbidden human sacrifice from the beginning and had given no instruction that could justify it. Their actions came from rebellion, not obedience.

Deu 12:32 See that you do everything I command you;…
Lev 10:1-2 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers,…
1Ki 12:33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month,…

nor did it even enter My mind.

Child sacrifice was wholly contrary to God’s holy character and will. Judah had embraced an evil so severe that divine judgment was certain.

Jer 7:31 They have built the high places of Topheth…
Jer 32:35 They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley…

So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,

God announces a future judgment with absolute certainty. Judah’s persistent rebellion, especially its idolatry and bloodshed, had brought the nation to the point of reckoning.

Jer 33:14 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 23:5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 31:27 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD…

when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom,

South of Jerusalem, this valley had been defiled by sacrifices of children in pagan worship. Its former associations would be eclipsed by the disaster God would bring upon Judah.

2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
2Ch 28:3 Moreover, Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
Isa 30:33 For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready…

but the Valley of Slaughter.

The site would become a memorial to the deaths caused by Jerusalem’s coming siege and destruction. The name foretells the scale of judgment against a people who had abandoned the LORD.

Jer 7:32 So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread…
Isa 34:5-6 When My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,…

And in this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem.

In the Valley of Ben Hinnom, where Judah had practiced idolatry and sacrificed children, God declared that the nation’s counsels and defenses would fail. Their political alliances, military preparations, and corrupt worship could not protect them from the judgment their rebellion had brought.

Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…
Psa 33:10 The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations;…
Pro 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose…

I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies,

Jerusalem would be defeated in war by the Babylonian army, which God raised up as the instrument of His judgment.

Jer 15:2 If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them…
Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…
Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…

by the hands of those who seek their lives,

Nebuchadnezzar’s forces would pursue the city’s destruction, bringing death to its people and ending Judah’s resistance.

Jer 11:21 Therefore this is what the LORD says…
Exo 4:19 Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt,…
Psa 54:3 For strangers rise up against me, and ruthless men…

and I will give their carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.

The unburied dead would bear public witness to the completeness of Jerusalem’s defeat and the shame brought upon the nation for forsaking the Lord.

Jer 7:33 The corpses of this people will become food for the birds…
Jer 16:4 They will not be mourned or buried, but will lie…
Deu 28:26 Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the air…

I will make this city a desolation and an object of scorn.

Jerusalem’s long rebellion, idolatry, and rejection of God’s warnings would bring ruin upon the city. The Babylonian invasion culminated in the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 586 BC, leaving the city devastated and its people carried into exile. Once honored among the nations as the center of Israel’s worship, Jerusalem would become a public symbol of judgment.

Jer 18:16 They have made their land a desolation, a perpetual…
Jer 25:9 behold, I will summon all the families of the north,…
Ezk 5:14 I will make you a ruin and a disgrace among the nations…

All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff at all her wounds.

The scale of Jerusalem’s destruction would shock those who saw it. Its shattered walls, burned buildings, and emptied streets would testify to the severity of God’s judgment. Nations that had known Jerusalem’s former strength would mock its downfall, treating its ruin as a warning of the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness.

Lam 2:15 All who pass by clap their hands at you in scorn.…
1Ki 9:8 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,…
Jer 30:12 For this is what the LORD says: “Your injury is incurable;…

I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters,

God declares the horrifying result of Jerusalem’s coming siege. Starvation would become so severe that normal family affection and restraint would collapse. The judgment fulfilled covenant warnings given to Israel for persistent rebellion and idolatry. Such suffering later accompanied the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem.

Deu 28:53 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
Lev 26:29 You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
2Ki 6:28-29 Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?”…

and they will eat one another’s flesh

The repeated image intensifies the picture of total desperation. Those who had rejected the Lord’s commands would experience the collapse of order, security, and compassion within the city.

Ezk 5:10 As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons…
Lam 4:10 The hands of compassionate women have cooked…
Lam 2:20 Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have You ever treated…

in the siege and distress inflicted on them

Babylon’s armies would surround Jerusalem, cutting off food and escape. The inhabitants would endure famine, fear, disease, and violence until the city fell in 586 BC.

Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…
Deu 28:55 refusing to share with any of them the flesh of his children…
2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…

by their enemies who seek their lives.’

Nebuchadnezzar’s forces were the immediate agents of destruction, yet their campaign came under God’s judgment against Judah. Jerusalem’s enemies pursued its people without mercy, bringing the consequences Jeremiah had long announced.

1Sa 23:15 While David was in Horesh in the Wilderness of Ziph,…
1Ki 19:10 I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,…
Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;…

Then you are to shatter the jar

Jeremiah’s breaking of the clay jar portrays God’s coming judgment on Jerusalem and Judah for their idolatry, bloodshed, and refusal to repent. Like a shattered vessel that cannot be restored, the nation would face devastating and irreversible ruin through the Babylonian invasion.

Jer 48:12 Therefore behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 48:38 On all the rooftops of Moab and in the public squares, everyone is mourning;…
Isa 30:14 It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar…

in the presence of the men who accompany you,

The elders and priests were to witness the act so that Judah’s leaders would understand the seriousness of God’s warning. Their presence made the judgment public and underscored their responsibility for the nation’s spiritual corruption.

Ezk 12:3-7 Therefore, son of man, pack your bags for exile.…
Isa 8:1-2 Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll…
Deu 31:19-21 Now therefore, write down for yourselves this song…

and you are to proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

Jeremiah was to speak with God’s own authority. The LORD of Hosts rules over all heavenly powers and possesses full authority to judge Judah and Jerusalem.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…

I will shatter this nation and this city,

God declared that Judah and Jerusalem would be destroyed because of their persistent rebellion. The coming Babylonian invasion would bring an end to the nation’s security and prosperity.

Zep 3:6 I have cut off the nations; their corner towers…
Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
2Ki 21:13 I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line…

like one shatters a potter’s jar that can never again be repaired.

The broken jar pictured judgment that could not be undone. Judah had rejected repeated warnings, and its ruin would be complete.

Isa 30:14 It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar…
Psa 2:9 You will break them with an iron scepter;…

They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to bury them.

Topheth, in the Valley of Hinnom, had been defiled by idolatry and child sacrifice. It would become a burial place for the victims of Jerusalem’s siege, as death from war, famine, and disease overwhelmed the city.

Jer 7:32-33 So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Ezk 39:11-16 And on that day I will give Gog a burial place…
Isa 30:33 For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready…

This is what I will do to this place and to its residents, declares the LORD.

God announces certain judgment on Jerusalem and its inhabitants for their persistent idolatry and covenant rebellion. The Lord’s declaration carries the full authority of the Judge who had repeatedly warned His people.

Jer 32:28-29 Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold…
2Ki 25:9-10 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…
Deu 28:49-52 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…

I will make this city like Topheth.

Topheth, in the Valley of Hinnom south of Jerusalem, had become notorious for child sacrifice and other abominations. Jerusalem would become like that defiled place: a scene of death, ruin, and public horror because its people had filled the city with bloodshed and forsaken the Lord.

Jer 7:31-34 They have built the high places of Topheth…
Isa 30:33 For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…

The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like that place, Topheth—

Jerusalem’s private homes and royal residences had become polluted by the same idolatry that made Topheth infamous in the Valley of Hinnom. The corruption extended from the people to the nation’s leaders, leaving the city subject to the judgment associated with that defiled place.

2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
Jer 7:31-34 They have built the high places of Topheth…
Jer 32:28-29 Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold…

all the houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to all the host of heaven

Rooftops provided open spaces for worship, and many households had openly adopted the worship of the sun, moon, stars, and other celestial powers. Their idolatry was public, widespread, and woven into daily life throughout Jerusalem.

Zep 1:5 those who bow on the rooftops to worship the host of heaven…
2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
2Ki 23:12 He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah…

and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”

Offerings meant for the Lord were directed to false gods instead. By giving worship to idols, Judah violated its covenant with God and brought the coming destruction upon the city and its people.

Jer 7:18 The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire…
Jer 44:17-19 Instead, we will do everything we vowed to do…
Ezk 20:28 When I brought them into the land that I swore to give them…

Then Jeremiah returned from Topheth,

Topheth lay in the Valley of Hinnom south of Jerusalem, a place defiled by child sacrifice connected with Molech worship. After carrying out the Lord’s commanded sign and announcing judgment there, Jeremiah returned to address the city itself. The valley later became associated with Gehenna, an image of divine judgment.

Jer 7:31 They have built the high places of Topheth…
Jer 32:35 They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…

where the LORD had sent him to prophesy,

Jeremiah spoke by God’s direct command, not on his own authority. His message condemned Judah’s idolatry, bloodshed, and refusal to heed the Lord’s warnings.

Jer 26:12 But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people,…
Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Jer 1:17 Get yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything…

and he stood in the courtyard of the house of the LORD

The temple courtyard provided a public setting where worshipers, priests, officials, and residents of Jerusalem could hear him. Declaring judgment at the temple exposed the contradiction between Judah’s religious observances and its persistent rebellion.

Jer 26:2 This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard…
2Ch 24:21 But they conspired against Zechariah…
2Ki 23:12 He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah…

and proclaimed to all the people,

The warning extended to the whole nation. No group could claim ignorance or exemption, for Jerusalem’s coming judgment resulted from widespread sin and continued rejection of God’s word.

Jer 26:8 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…
Jer 36:10 From the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe,…
Deu 31:11-12 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

God speaks with the authority of the ruler of heaven’s armies and the covenant God of Israel. Jeremiah delivers God’s own judgment, not a personal warning.

Jer 35:13 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Jer 29:8 For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Jer 7:3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel:…

‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every disaster I have pronounced against them,

Jerusalem and the towns of Judah would share in the judgment God had repeatedly announced through His prophets. Babylon’s invasion, siege, and destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC fulfilled this warning.

Jer 35:17 Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says:…
Jer 11:11 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring…
Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…

because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words.’”

Judah’s leaders and people had persistently refused God’s commands and rejected His calls to repent. Their rebellion, idolatry, and disregard for His warnings brought the disaster they had chosen by refusing to listen.

Neh 9:16 But they and our fathers became arrogant and stiff-necked…
Deu 9:13 The LORD also said to me, “I have seen this people,…
2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…
