Mary Anoints Jesus

1Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), πρὸ (before) ἓξ (six) ἡμερῶν (days) τοῦ (the) πάσχα (Passover), ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) Λάζαρος (Lazarus), ὃν (whom) ἤγειρεν (had raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus).
2ἐποίησαν (They made) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (Him) δεῖπνον (a supper) ἐκεῖ (there), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) Μάρθα (Martha) διηκόνει (was serving), ὁ (-) δὲ (and) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) εἷς (one) ἦν (was) ἐκ (of) τῶν (those) ἀνακειμένων (reclining) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him).
3ἡ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Μαριὰμ (Mary), λαβοῦσα (having taken) λίτραν (a litra)a μύρου (of fragrant oil) νάρδου (of nard) πιστικῆς (pure) πολυτίμου (of great price), ἤλειψεν (anointed) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐξέμαξεν (wiped) ταῖς (with the) θριξὶν (hair) αὐτῆς (of her) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ἡ (the) δὲ (now) οἰκία (house) ἐπληρώθη (was filled) ἐκ (with) τῆς (the) ὀσμῆς (fragrance) τοῦ (of the) μύρου (oil).
4Λέγει (Says) δὲ (however) Ἰούδας (Judas) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), εἷς (one) [ἐκ] (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὁ (-) μέλλων (being about) αὐτὸν (Him) παραδιδόναι (to betray),
5“Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) μύρον (fragrant oil) οὐκ (not) ἐπράθη (was sold) τριακοσίων (for three hundred) δηναρίων (denarii)b καὶ (and) ἐδόθη (given) πτωχοῖς (to the poor)?”
6εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (however) τοῦτο (this), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (because) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) πτωχῶν (poor) ἔμελεν (he was caring) αὐτῷ (to him), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (because) κλέπτης (a thief) ἦν (he was), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) γλωσσόκομον (money bag) ἔχων (having), τὰ (that) βαλλόμενα (being put into it) ἐβάσταζεν (he used to pilfer).
7Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄφες (Leave alone) αὐτήν (her), ἵνα (so that) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) τοῦ (of the) ἐνταφιασμοῦ (burial) μου (of Me) τηρήσῃ (she may keep) αὐτό (it);
8τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) γὰρ (for) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (you);c ἐμὲ (Me) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have).”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9Ἔγνω (Knew) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολὺς (great) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖ (there) ἐστιν (He is); καὶ (and) ἦλθον (they came), οὐ (not) διὰ (because of) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) μόνον (only), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἴδωσιν (they might see), ὃν (whom) ἤγειρεν (He had raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).
10ἐβουλεύσαντο (Took counsel) δὲ (however) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἀποκτείνωσιν (they might kill),
11ὅτι (because) πολλοὶ (many) δι’ (on account of) αὐτὸν (him) ὑπῆγον (were going away) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) καὶ (and) ἐπίστευον (were believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

12Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) πολὺς (great) ὁ (-) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑορτήν (feast), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ὅτι (that) ἔρχεται (is coming) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem),
13ἔλαβον (took) τὰ (the) βαΐα (branches) τῶν (of the) φοινίκων (palm trees) καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθον (went out) εἰς (to) ὑπάντησιν (meet) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) ἐκραύγαζον (were shouting):
“Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!”d

14Εὑρὼν (Having found) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὀνάριον (a young donkey), ἐκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτό (it), καθώς (as) ἐστιν (it is) γεγραμμένον (written):
15“Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), θυγάτηρ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion).
ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεται (comes),
καθήμενος (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) πῶλον (a colt) ὄνου (of a donkey).”g
16Ταῦτα (These things) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (knew) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τὸ (from the) πρῶτον (first), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτε (when) ἐδοξάσθη (was glorified) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τότε (then) ἐμνήσθησαν (they remembered) ὅτι (that) ταῦτα (these things) ἦν (were) ἐπ’ (of) αὐτῷ (Him) γεγραμμένα (written), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) ἐποίησαν (they had done) αὐτῷ (to Him).
17Ἐμαρτύρει (Continued to bear witness) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ὁ (-) ὢν (being) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτε (when) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐφώνησεν (He called) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) μνημείου (tomb) καὶ (and) ἤγειρεν (raised) αὐτὸν (him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).
18διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤκουσαν (they heard) τοῦτο (this) αὐτὸν (of His) πεποιηκέναι (having done) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign).
19Οἱ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) εἶπαν (said) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Θεωρεῖτε (You see) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ὠφελεῖτε (you gain) οὐδέν (nothing). ἴδε (Behold), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀπῆλθεν (has gone).”
Jesus Predicts His Death
20Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) Ἕλληνές (Greeks) τινες (certain) ἐκ (among) τῶν (those) ἀναβαινόντων (coming up) ἵνα (that) προσκυνήσωσιν (they might worship) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) ἑορτῇ (feast);
21οὗτοι (these) οὖν (therefore) προσῆλθον (came) Φιλίππῳ (to Philip), τῷ (who was) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθσαϊδὰ (Bethsaida) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), καὶ (and) ἠρώτων (they were asking) αὐτὸν (him) λέγοντες (saying), “Κύριε (Sir), θέλομεν (we desire) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἰδεῖν (to see).”
22ἔρχεται (Comes) ὁ (-) Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) λέγει (tells) τῷ (-) Ἀνδρέᾳ (Andrew); ἔρχεται (come) Ἀνδρέας (Andrew) καὶ (and) Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) λέγουσιν (tell) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).
23Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀποκρίνεται (answered) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγων (saying), “Ἐλήλυθεν (Has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) ἵνα (that) δοξασθῇ (should be glorified) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).
24ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) κόκκος (grain) τοῦ (-) σίτου (of wheat), πεσὼν (having fallen) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground), ἀποθάνῃ (should die), αὐτὸς (it) μόνος (alone) μένει (abides); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (it should die), πολὺν (much) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρει (it bears).
25ὁ (The one) φιλῶν (loving) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπολλύει (loses) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μισῶν (hating) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) τούτῳ (this), εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) φυλάξει (will keep) αὐτήν (it).
26ἐὰν (If) ἐμοί (Me) τις (anyone) διακονῇ (serves), ἐμοὶ (Me) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) διάκονος (servant) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) ἔσται (will be). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἐμοὶ (Me) διακονῇ (serves), τιμήσει (will honor) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father).
27Νῦν (Now) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me) τετάρακται (has been troubled), καὶ (and) τί (what) εἴπω (shall I say)? ‘Πάτερ (Father), σῶσόν (save) με (Me) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ταύτης (this).’ ἀλλὰ (But) διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) ἦλθον (I came) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ὥραν (hour) ταύτην (this).
28Πάτερ (Father), δόξασόν (glorify) σου (of You) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name).”
Ἦλθεν (Came) οὖν (therefore) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven): “Καὶ (Both) ἐδόξασα (I have glorified it), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) δοξάσω (I will glorify it).”
29Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) ὄχλος (the crowd) ὁ (-) ἑστὼς (having stood) καὶ (and) ἀκούσας (having heard) ἔλεγεν (was saying), “Βροντὴν (Thunder) γεγονέναι (there has been).” ἄλλοι (Others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἄγγελος (An angel) αὐτῷ (to Him) λελάληκεν (has spoken).”
30Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) “Οὐ (Not) δι’ (because of) ἐμὲ (Me) ἡ (the) φωνὴ (voice) αὕτη (this) γέγονεν (has come), ἀλλὰ (but) δι’ (because of) ὑμᾶς (you).
31νῦν (Now) κρίσις (the judgment) ἐστὶν (is) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this); νῦν (now) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (prince) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) ἐκβληθήσεται (will be cast) ἔξω (out).
32κἀγὼ (And I), ἐὰν (if) ὑψωθῶ (I am lifted up) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), πάντας (all) ἑλκύσω (will draw) πρὸς (to) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).”
33τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἔλεγεν (He was saying), σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (by what) θανάτῳ (death) ἤμελλεν (He was about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die).
34Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) οὖν (then) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), “Ἡμεῖς (We) ἠκούσαμεν (have heard) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) πῶς (how) λέγεις (say) σὺ (you) ὅτι (that) δεῖ (it behooves) ὑψωθῆναι (to be lifted up) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man)? τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man)?”
35Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going).
36ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).”
Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).
Belief and Unbelief
37Τοσαῦτα (So many) δὲ (however) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σημεῖα (signs) πεποιηκότος (having been done) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them), οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευον (they believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him),
38ἵνα (so that) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (said):
“Κύριε (Lord), τίς (who) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) τῇ (the) ἀκοῇ (report) ἡμῶν (of us)?
καὶ (And) ὁ (the) βραχίων (arm) Κυρίου (of the Lord) τίνι (to whom) ἀπεκαλύφθη (has been revealed)?”h
39Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), οὐκ (not) ἠδύναντο (they were able) πιστεύειν (to believe), ὅτι (for) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah):
40“Τετύφλωκεν (He has blinded) αὐτῶν (of them) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes),
καὶ (and) ἐπώρωσεν (has hardened) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart),
ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes),
καὶ (and) νοήσωσιν (understand) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart),
καὶ (and) στραφῶσιν (turn),
καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).”i
41Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) ὅτι (because) εἶδεν (he saw) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him).
42ὅμως (Nevertheless), μέντοι (indeed) καὶ (even) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees) οὐχ (not) ὡμολόγουν (they were confessing), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἀποσυνάγωγοι (put out of the synagogue) γένωνται (they might be);
43ἠγάπησαν (they loved) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) μᾶλλον (more) ἤπερ (than) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).
44Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (then) ἔκραξεν (cried out) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), οὐ (not) πιστεύει (believes) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἀλλὰ (but) εἰς (in) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me);
45καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) θεωρῶν (beholding) ἐμὲ (Me), θεωρεῖ (beholds) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me).
46ἐγὼ (I) φῶς (a light) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐλήλυθα (have come), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (should abide).
47Καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τίς (anyone) μου (of Me) ἀκούσῃ (hears) τῶν (the) ῥημάτων (words) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φυλάξῃ (keeps them), ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κρίνω (do judge) αὐτόν (him), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἦλθον (I came) ἵνα (that) κρίνω (I might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σώσω (I might save) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).
48ὁ (The one) ἀθετῶν (rejecting) ἐμὲ (Me) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) λαμβάνων (receiving) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἔχει (has) τὸν (one) κρίνοντα (judging) αὐτόν (him): ὁ (The) λόγος (word) ὃν (which) ἐλάλησα (I spoke), ἐκεῖνος (that) κρινεῖ (will judge) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).
49Ὅτι (For) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξ (from) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) οὐκ (not) ἐλάλησα (spoke), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me) Πατὴρ (Father) αὐτός (Himself), μοι (Me) ἐντολὴν (a commandment) δέδωκεν (gave) τί (what) εἴπω (I should say) καὶ (and) τί (what) λαλήσω (I should speak).
50καὶ (And) οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ζωὴ (life) αἰώνιός (eternal) ἐστιν (is). ἃ (What) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) λαλῶ (speak), καθὼς (as) εἴρηκέν (has said) μοι (to Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), οὕτως (so) λαλῶ (I speak).”
