With stringed instruments.… To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” It was sung to a known melody, likely one suited to the psalm’s sorrowful and urgent setting. Psa 22:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Doe of the Dawn.”… A Miktam of David, David composed this prayer during a period of personal danger, expressing faith in God amid fear and opposition. Psa 57:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”… when the Philistines seized him in Gath. While fleeing from Saul, David entered the Philistine city of Gath and was recognized as Israel’s celebrated warrior. Surrounded by enemies, he escaped only after feigning madness. 1Sa 21:10-15 That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish… Be merciful to me, O God, David begins by appealing to God’s compassion, knowing that human strength could not secure his safety. Psa 57:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”… for men are hounding me; His enemies pursued him relentlessly, treating him as prey and seeking to destroy him. Psa 54:3 For strangers rise up against me, and ruthless men… all day they press their attack. The danger was continual, leaving David dependent on God’s protection throughout the day. Psa 42:10 Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me…… My enemies pursue me all day long, David lived under continual threat, especially during Saul’s determined efforts to capture and kill him. His flight through the wilderness, separation from family, and dependence on loyal companions reveal the daily pressure of enemies who sought his downfall. The unrelenting hostility reflects the ongoing conflict faced by those who belong to God in a fallen world. Psa 71:11 “God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him”… for many proudly assail me. David’s attackers acted with confidence, assuming their power, numbers, and influence would overcome the man God had anointed as king. Their arrogance blinded them to the Lord’s protection and purposes for David. Like those who later opposed Jesus despite the evidence of His identity, they resisted God’s chosen servant and ultimately acted in vain. Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net… When I am afraid, David acknowledges fear as a real response to danger. Surrounded by enemies and often pursued for his life, he did not deny the threat or pretend to be unmoved by it. Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.… I put my trust in You. Fear became an occasion to depend on God rather than surrender to despair. David rested in the Lord’s faithfulness, protection, and power, placing his safety in God’s hands even when circumstances remained dangerous. Psa 9:10 Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O LORD,… In God, whose word I praise— David anchors his confidence in God’s revealed promises. Surrounded by enemies, he honors the faithfulness of the One who has spoken and whose purposes cannot fail. Psa 119:164 Seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous judgments. in God I trust. His security rests not in escape, military strength, or human alliances, but in the Lord’s character and covenant care. Psa 91:2 I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress… I will not be afraid. Though danger is real, fear does not rule him because God remains sovereign over his circumstances. Psa 27:1 Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation—… What can man do to me? People may threaten, oppose, or harm the body, but they cannot overturn God’s will or remove His servant from His keeping. Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.… All day long they twist my words; David’s enemies continually misrepresent his words and intentions, seeking to damage his reputation and strengthen their case against him. Their attacks are deliberate and persistent, turning even his speech into grounds for accusation. Psa 109:2 For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;… all their thoughts are on my demise. Their opposition is not merely personal resentment but a settled desire to destroy him. David had known such danger under Saul and from other rivals who viewed his survival and rule as a threat to their own power. Jer 18:23 But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me.… They conspire, David’s enemies deliberately plan against him, as Saul and his followers repeatedly did during David’s years as a fugitive. Their hostility is calculated rather than impulsive. Psa 31:13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror… they lurk, They remain concealed, waiting for an opportunity to strike, like men setting an ambush against one who cannot safely rest. Psa 10:8 He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush… they watch my steps David is closely tracked, likely through Saul’s informants and local inhabitants who reported his movements. Every journey and refuge becomes dangerous because his enemies seek to anticipate his actions. Lam 4:18 They stalked our every step, so that we could not walk… while they wait to take my life. Their purpose is not merely to shame or remove David from power but to kill him. Yet their schemes cannot overturn God’s purpose to preserve David and establish him as king. Psa 59:3 See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire… In spite of such sin, will they escape? David asks whether his enemies can continue their deceit, violence, and pursuit of him without facing God’s judgment. Though the wicked may appear to succeed for a time, their sin remains before God, who sees their schemes and holds them accountable. Jer 11:11 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring… In Your anger, O God, cast down the nations. Surrounded by hostile Philistines and other enemies of Israel, David appeals to God as the righteous Judge over every people and kingdom. He asks God to overthrow those who oppose His purposes and persecute His people. Isa 63:6 I trampled the nations in My anger; in My wrath… You have taken account of my wanderings. David’s years as a fugitive from Saul included repeated moves through the wilderness, foreign territory, and places of hiding. None of his hardships, fears, or forced journeys were hidden from God. Deu 2:7 Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you… Put my tears in Your bottle— God regards David’s sorrow as personal and precious, preserving the record of every grief endured during his affliction. 2Ki 20:5 Go back and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people… are they not in Your book? God’s record is complete and just. David’s suffering, faithfulness, and enemies’ wrongdoing were all known to Him, assuring that God would vindicate His servant in His time. Psa 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written… Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help. David expects God to answer his prayer and turn back those pursuing him. Surrounded at different times by Saul, the Philistines, and other foes, he knew that deliverance did not rest on military strength or human alliances. God could reverse the plans of enemies when His servant called upon Him. Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried… By this I will know that God is on my side. Their retreat would show God’s active favor and protection. David’s confidence rests on the Lord’s covenant faithfulness, not on changing circumstances. God’s presence with him gave meaning to his trials and assurance that opposition would not overcome God’s purpose. Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.… In God, whose word I praise, David rests in the sovereign God who rules over all nations and circumstances. Though surrounded by enemies, he treats God’s revealed word as certain and worthy of praise because God’s promises cannot fail. Psa 138:2 I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks… in the LORD, whose word I praise, David also appeals to the covenant God who had bound Himself to Israel and to David’s royal line. Repeating his praise emphasizes that God’s power and personal faithfulness give him confidence amid danger. Psa 119:172 My tongue sings of Your word, for all Your commandments… in God I trust; David rests in God’s sovereign care while facing real danger from his enemies. His confidence is grounded in the Lord’s faithfulness, not in his own strength or circumstances. Psa 91:2 I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress… I will not be afraid. Though threatened by men who could harm him physically, David refuses to let fear rule him because God remains present and in control. Isa 12:2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.… What can man do to me? Human opposition is limited and cannot overturn God’s purposes. Even the most powerful enemies cannot separate God’s people from His protection or defeat His will. Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.… Your vows are upon me, O God; David recognizes the obligations he has made before God and accepts them as binding. In the midst of danger, he remains accountable to the Lord who sees his distress and preserves his life. His vows express continued trust and submission to God’s covenant faithfulness. Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow… I will render thank offerings to You. Deliverance will be answered with public gratitude and worship. Thank offerings acknowledged God’s help and celebrated His faithfulness, not merely relief from trouble. David intends to fulfill his promises by giving God the honor due for His rescue. Psa 116:17-18 I will offer to You a sacrifice of thanksgiving… For You have delivered my soul from death, David credits God for preserving him through Saul’s repeated attempts to kill him and other dangers that threatened his life. His survival rested on God’s faithfulness to His chosen king. Psa 116:8 For You have delivered my soul from death,… and my feet from stumbling, God had also kept David from ruinous paths, including taking vengeance against Saul when opportunities arose. The Lord’s protection included both physical safety and moral restraint. Pro 3:23 Then you will go on your way in safety,… that I may walk before God Preserved for a purpose, David was to live openly before God in obedience, recognizing that his life remained under God’s authority. Psa 116:9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living. in the light of life. God’s favor brings deliverance from darkness and death into the sphere of life. The fullness of this hope is seen in Christ, whose resurrection secures eternal life for those who belong to Him.
