Berean Study Bible Land Division West of the JordanThe division of Canaan marked the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise to give Israel the land. Each tribal allotment was received as an inheritance, not merely acquired territory, establishing the tribes in the land after the conquest. Num 26:52-56 Then the LORD said to Moses,… as distributed by Eleazar the priest, Eleazar succeeded Aaron as high priest and represented the Lord’s authority in the process. His presence affirmed that the distribution followed God’s command and that the land remained a sacred trust for Israel. Num 34:17-18 These are the names of the men who are to assign the land… Joshua son of Nun, Joshua, whose name means “The Lord is salvation,” led Israel through the conquest and now oversaw the settlement of the tribes. Having faithfully carried out the mission entrusted to him by Moses and confirmed by the Lord, he helped establish Israel securely in the land. Num 27:18-23 And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun,… and the heads of the families of the tribes of Israel. The tribal leaders represented their clans in receiving the allotments. Their participation provided order, public accountability, and recognition of each tribe’s lawful inheritance. Num 1:16 These men were appointed from the congregation;… Their inheritance was assigned by lot Israel distributed the land by casting lots before the LORD, recognizing that He directed the outcome. This protected the process from favoritism and established each tribe’s territory as an inheritance received from God. Num 33:54 And you are to divide the land by lot according to your clans… for the nine and a half tribes, Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had already received land east of the Jordan. The remaining tribes, including the other half of Manasseh, were to receive their allotted territories in Canaan west of the river. Jos 13:7-8 Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance… as the LORD had commanded through Moses. Joshua carried out the instructions God had given Moses for dividing the land among the tribes. The distribution completed an important stage in Israel’s possession of the land promised to their fathers. Num 34:1-2 Then the LORD said to Moses,… For Moses had given the inheritance east of the Jordan to the other two and a half tribes. Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh received territory in Gilead and Bashan because of their abundant livestock. Moses granted their request after they pledged to cross the Jordan with Israel’s army and remain until the land west of the river was secured. Jos 1:12-15 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe… But he granted no inheritance among them to the Levites. The Levites received no tribal territory because they were appointed for the service of the Lord and the tabernacle. Instead, they were given cities throughout Israel and were supported by the tithes and offerings of the other tribes. Num 18:20 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance… The descendants of Joseph became two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. Jacob adopted Joseph’s sons as his own, granting Joseph a double inheritance among Israel’s tribes. Manasseh and Ephraim therefore received separate tribal identities and land allotments. Ephraim later became prominent in the northern kingdom, while Manasseh occupied territory on both sides of the Jordan. Gen 48:5 And now your two sons born to you in Egypt… And no portion of the land was given to the Levites, Levi’s descendants were set apart for priestly and tabernacle service. Rather than receiving a tribal territory, they depended on the Lord’s provision through the offerings and tithes of Israel. Num 18:20 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance… except for cities in which to live, Levitical cities were distributed throughout the tribal territories, placing those responsible for worship, instruction, and judgment among the people. Jos 21:2-3 Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them,… along with pasturelands for their flocks and herds. Land surrounding these cities supplied grazing areas for the Levites’ livestock and provided for their households while preserving their freedom to carry out their appointed service. Jos 21:41-42 For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities… So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses, Israel followed the instructions the Lord had given through Moses for assigning the land. Under Joshua’s leadership, the people carried out God’s established order, showing continuity between Moses’ ministry and Joshua’s command. Deu 34:9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom… and they divided the land. The conquered territory was apportioned among the tribes as their permanent inheritance in Canaan. Each allotment confirmed the Lord’s faithfulness to give Abraham’s descendants the land He had promised, establishing Israel as a settled nation rather than a wandering people. Num 26:53-56 The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance…
Caleb Requests HebronGilgal, Israel’s first encampment west of the Jordan, remained a central gathering place during the division of the land. Judah came first, reflecting its leading role among the tribes. Jos 15:13 According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave… and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, Caleb had stood with Joshua nearly forty-five years earlier when the spies returned from Canaan. Though identified with the Kenizzites, his family was fully counted within Judah, and his faithful service had earned him the inheritance promised by God. Num 13:6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me. At Kadesh-barnea, Caleb and Joshua trusted God’s promise while the rest of Israel refused to enter the land. God declared that these two men would survive the wilderness generation and receive their inheritance in Canaan. Num 14:30 Surely none of you will enter the land in which I swore… I was forty years old Caleb was a mature and capable man when he was chosen for this mission. His age also marks the beginning of the forty years Israel would spend in the wilderness because of unbelief. Act 7:23 When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit… when Moses the servant of the LORD Moses led Israel under God’s authority and sent the twelve tribal representatives according to the LORD’s command. Deu 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there.… sent me from Kadesh-barnea Kadesh-barnea stood at the southern border of Canaan and became the setting for Israel’s decisive refusal to enter the land God had promised. Deu 1:19 And just as the LORD our God had commanded us,… to spy out the land, Caleb was among the men sent to examine Canaan’s fertility, cities, and inhabitants in preparation for Israel’s entry. Num 13:17 When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan… and I brought back to him an honest report. Caleb reported what he had seen without denying the strength of Canaan’s inhabitants, yet he trusted that God would give Israel victory. Unlike the ten fearful spies, Caleb remained faithful to the LORD’s promise. Num 13:30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said,… Although my brothers who went with me Caleb recalls the twelve men Moses sent to explore Canaan. Though they shared the same calling and identity as Israelites, ten of the spies returned with a report that turned the nation away from obedience. Num 13:26-27 and they went back to Moses, Aaron, and the congregation… made the hearts of the people melt with fear, Their description of the land’s fortified cities and powerful inhabitants caused Israel to lose courage and refuse to enter the land God had promised them. The fearful report stirred rebellion throughout the camp. Deu 1:28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt,… I remained loyal to the LORD my God. Caleb trusted God’s promise when others focused on the strength of Canaan’s inhabitants. Along with Joshua, he urged Israel to obey, and God preserved him to receive the inheritance promised for his faithfulness. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… On that day Moses swore to me, saying, Moses confirmed that Caleb would receive the territory he had explored when Israel first approached Canaan. The promise followed Caleb’s faithful report when the other spies and the nation refused to trust the Lord. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… ‘Surely the land on which you have set foot Caleb had traveled through the hill country around Hebron, an ancient and important Canaanite city. Its fortified settlements and powerful inhabitants had intimidated the other spies, yet Caleb believed God would give Israel the land. Jos 1:3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot… will be an inheritance to you and your children forever, The grant secured an enduring family possession within Israel. Hebron later became both Caleb’s inheritance and a Levitical city, while its surrounding fields remained with Caleb’s descendants. Exo 32:13 Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,… because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’ Caleb’s confidence rested on the Lord’s promise rather than the strength of Canaan’s inhabitants. His obedience set him apart from the unbelieving generation and led to the fulfillment of Moses’ oath. Num 32:12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite…… Now behold, as the LORD promised, Caleb begins by pointing to God’s faithfulness. The Lord had promised that he would enter the land because he followed Him fully, and the passing years had not weakened that promise. 1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel… He has kept me alive these forty-five years Caleb recognizes that his life and strength had been preserved by God. Those years included Israel’s wilderness judgment and the years of warfare after entering Canaan. Num 14:38 Of those men who had gone to spy out the land, only Joshua… since He spoke this word to Moses, God gave the promise through Moses when Caleb returned from spying out the land. Though Moses had died, the Lord’s word remained sure and was now being fulfilled under Joshua’s leadership. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Israel’s forty years in the wilderness resulted from the unbelief of the generation that refused to enter the land. Caleb endured the same journey, yet he remained faithful to the Lord and lived to receive his inheritance. Num 14:33-34 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness… So here I am today, eighty-five years old, At eighty-five, Caleb stands as evidence of God’s sustaining power. Age had not removed his readiness to take the portion of land the Lord had promised him. Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty… still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. At eighty-five, Caleb testified that the forty-five years since Moses sent him to spy out Canaan had not diminished his ability. While the unbelieving generation had perished in the wilderness, God preserved Caleb because he had followed Him wholeheartedly. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… As my strength was then, so it is now for war, Caleb was prepared to take part in the conquest of the land promised to him. His confidence rested not in pride or natural ability, but in the Lord who had sustained him and would give Israel victory. Deu 33:25 May the bolts of your gate be iron and bronze,… for going out, and for coming in. Caleb remained capable in every duty required of him, whether leading men into battle or carrying out the ordinary responsibilities of life. His endurance showed God’s faithfulness to those who trust and obey Him. Num 27:17 who will go out and come in before them,… Now therefore give me this hill country Caleb asks for Hebron, the rugged southern highland he had explored forty-five years earlier. The area was associated with the patriarchs and contained territory still held by powerful Canaanite clans. Jos 15:13-14 According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave… that the LORD promised me on that day, Moses had affirmed that Caleb would receive the land he had surveyed because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly. Caleb now seeks the inheritance God had promised rather than an easier portion of the land. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… for you yourself heard then that the Anakim were there, The Anakim, renowned for their great size and strength, had frightened the other spies and contributed to Israel’s unbelief at Kadesh-barnea. Caleb had not denied the danger, but he had trusted God to overcome it. Num 13:28-33 Nevertheless, the people living in the land are strong,… with great and fortified cities. Hebron’s inhabitants possessed strong defenses and occupied a strategically important region. Caleb’s request showed that age had not weakened his confidence or willingness to face the remaining enemies. Deu 1:28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt,… Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, Caleb depended on the LORD for victory while preparing to act in obedience. His confidence rested on God’s power, not his own strength. Jos 23:5 The LORD your God will push them out of your way… as the LORD has spoken.” The promise given through Moses remained certain after decades of waiting. Caleb’s inheritance would testify to the faithfulness of God and the reward of steadfast obedience. Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth… Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh As Israel’s leader, Joshua publicly honored Caleb for the faithfulness he had shown since the days of the spies. Caleb had trusted God’s promise when most of Israel rebelled, and he had remained steadfast through the wilderness years. Deu 1:36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it,… and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. Hebron, formerly called Kiriath-arba, was an ancient and important city associated with Abraham and the burial place of the patriarchs. Granting it to Caleb fulfilled God’s earlier promise that he would receive the land he had explored because he had followed the Lord wholeheartedly. Jdg 1:20 Just as Moses had promised, Judah gave Hebron to Caleb… Therefore Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, Hebron, formerly called Kiriath Arba, stood in Judah’s hill country and was closely associated with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who were buried nearby in the Cave of Machpelah. Caleb received the city because of the promise Moses had made after his faithful report from Canaan. Though identified as a Kenizzite, Caleb was fully joined to Judah and shared in Israel’s covenant inheritance. His possession of Hebron testified to the lasting fulfillment of God’s promise. Jos 21:12 But they had given the fields and villages around the city… because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel. While the other spies urged Israel to retreat in fear, Caleb and Joshua trusted God to give the land to His people. Caleb’s inheritance came after decades of waiting and confirmed that God honors faithful obedience. His devotion was directed to the LORD, Israel’s covenant God, whose promise and power secured the land. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… (Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, Hebron, formerly called Kiriath-arba after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim (Josh. 14:15), was already ancient in Abraham’s day. It became a major patriarchal center, where Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah for Sarah’s burial and where the patriarchs and their wives were later buried. Its capture marked the removal of a strong Anakite presence from a region central to Israel’s inheritance. Gen 23:2 She died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron)… after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.) The Anakim were feared for their great size and strength, yet they could not withstand the Lord’s judgment through Israel. Hebron’s former name preserved the memory of Arba’s prominence, while its later history showed that the land belonged to the people God had promised to establish there. Num 13:22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,… Then the land had rest from war. Joshua’s major campaigns had broken the power of the Canaanite kings and secured the land for Israel’s tribal settlement. Though individual conflicts remained, organized resistance had been subdued, allowing Israel to take possession of its inheritance. Jos 11:23 So Joshua took the entire land, as the LORD had spoken… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
