For the waters have come up to my neck. | For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. |
טָבַ֤עְתִּי ׀ בִּיוֵ֣ן מְ֭צוּלָה וְאֵ֣ין מָעֳמָ֑ד בָּ֥אתִי בְמַעֲמַקֵּי־ מַ֝֗יִם וְשִׁבֹּ֥לֶת שְׁטָפָֽתְנִי׃ | I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. | I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. |
יָגַ֣עְתִּי בְקָרְאִי֮ נִחַ֪ר גְּר֫וֹנִ֥י כָּל֥וּ עֵינַ֑י מְ֝יַחֵ֗ל לֵאלֹהָֽי׃ | I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. | I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
רַבּ֤וּ ׀ מִשַּׂעֲר֣וֹת רֹאשִׁי֮ שֹׂנְאַ֪י חִ֫נָּ֥ם עָצְמ֣וּ מַ֭צְמִיתַי אֹיְבַ֣י שֶׁ֑קֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־ גָ֝זַ֗לְתִּי אָ֣ז אָשִֽׁיב׃ | More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? | Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. |
אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים אַתָּ֣ה יָ֭דַעְתָּ לְאִוַּלְתִּ֑י וְ֝אַשְׁמוֹתַ֗י מִמְּךָ֥ לֹא־ נִכְחָֽדוּ׃ | O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. | You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you. |
אַל־ יֵ֘בֹ֤שׁוּ בִ֨י ׀ קֹוֶיךָ֮ אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֗ה צְבָ֫א֥וֹת אַל־ יִכָּ֣לְמוּ בִ֣י מְבַקְשֶׁ֑יךָ אֱ֝לֹהֵ֗י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ | Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. | Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me. |
כִּֽי־ עָ֭לֶיךָ נָשָׂ֣אתִי חֶרְפָּ֑ה כִּסְּתָ֖ה כְלִמָּ֣ה פָנָֽי׃ | For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. | For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. |
מ֭וּזָר הָיִ֣יתִי לְאֶחָ֑י וְ֝נָכְרִ֗י לִבְנֵ֥י אִמִּֽי׃ | I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. | I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children; |
כִּֽי־ קִנְאַ֣ת בֵּיתְךָ֣ אֲכָלָ֑תְנִי וְחֶרְפּ֥וֹת ח֝וֹרְפֶ֗יךָ נָפְל֥וּ עָלָֽי׃ | For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. | for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. |
וָאֶבְכֶּ֣ה בַצּ֣וֹם נַפְשִׁ֑י וַתְּהִ֖י לַחֲרָפ֣וֹת לִֽי׃ | When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. | When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; |
וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה לְבוּשִׁ֣י שָׂ֑ק וָאֱהִ֖י לָהֶ֣ם לְמָשָֽׁל׃ | When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. | when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. |
יָשִׂ֣יחוּ בִ֭י יֹ֣שְׁבֵי שָׁ֑עַר וּ֝נְגִינ֗וֹת שׁוֹתֵ֥י שֵׁכָֽר׃ | I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. | Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. |
וַאֲנִ֤י תְפִלָּתִֽי־ לְךָ֨ ׀ יְהוָ֡ה עֵ֤ת רָצ֗וֹן אֱלֹהִ֥ים בְּרָב־ חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ עֲ֝נֵ֗נִי בֶּאֱמֶ֥ת יִשְׁעֶֽךָ׃ | But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. | But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
הַצִּילֵ֣נִי מִ֭טִּיט וְאַל־ אֶטְבָּ֑עָה אִנָּצְלָ֥ה מִ֝שֹּֽׂנְאַ֗י וּמִמַּֽעֲמַקֵּי־ מָֽיִם׃ | Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. | Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. |
אַל־ תִּשְׁטְפֵ֤נִי ׀ שִׁבֹּ֣לֶת מַ֭יִם וְאַל־ תִּבְלָעֵ֣נִי מְצוּלָ֑ה וְאַל־ תֶּאְטַר־ עָלַ֖י בְּאֵ֣ר פִּֽיהָ׃ | Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. | Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. |
עֲנֵ֣נִי יְ֭הוָה כִּי־ ט֣וֹב חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ כְּרֹ֥ב רַ֝חֲמֶ֗יךָ פְּנֵ֣ה אֵלָֽי׃ | Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. | Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. |
וְאַל־ תַּסְתֵּ֣ר פָּ֭נֶיךָ מֵֽעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּֽי־ צַר־ לִ֝֗י מַהֵ֥ר עֲנֵֽנִי׃ | Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. | Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. |
קָרְבָ֣ה אֶל־ נַפְשִׁ֣י גְאָלָ֑הּ לְמַ֖עַן אֹיְבַ֣י פְּדֵֽנִי׃ | Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies! | Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes. |
אַתָּ֤ה יָדַ֗עְתָּ חֶרְפָּתִ֣י וּ֭בָשְׁתִּי וּכְלִמָּתִ֑י נֶ֝גְדְּךָ֗ כָּל־ צוֹרְרָֽי׃ | You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. | You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. |
חֶרְפָּ֤ה ׀ שָֽׁבְרָ֥ה לִבִּ֗י וָֽאָ֫נ֥וּשָׁה וָאֲקַוֶּ֣ה לָנ֣וּד וָאַ֑יִן וְ֝לַמְנַחֲמִ֗ים וְלֹ֣א מָצָֽאתִי׃ | Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. | Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. |
וַיִּתְּנ֣וּ בְּבָרוּתִ֣י רֹ֑אשׁ וְ֝לִצְמָאִ֗י יַשְׁק֥וּנִי חֹֽמֶץ׃ | They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. | They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. |
יְהִֽי־ שֻׁלְחָנָ֣ם לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם לְפָ֑ח וְלִשְׁלוֹמִ֥ים לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃ | Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. | May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. |
תֶּחְשַׁ֣כְנָה עֵ֭ינֵיהֶם מֵרְא֑וֹת וּ֝מָתְנֵ֗יהֶם תָּמִ֥יד הַמְעַֽד׃ | Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually. | May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. |
שְׁפָךְ־ עֲלֵיהֶ֥ם זַעְמֶ֑ךָ וַחֲר֥וֹן אַ֝פְּךָ֗ יַשִּׂיגֵֽם׃ | Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them. | Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. |
תְּהִי־ טִֽירָתָ֥ם נְשַׁמָּ֑ה בְּ֝אָהֳלֵיהֶ֗ם אַל־ יְהִ֥י יֹשֵֽׁב׃ | May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents. | May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. |
כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־ הִכִּ֣יתָ רָדָ֑פוּ וְאֶל־ מַכְא֖וֹב חֲלָלֶ֣יךָ יְסַפֵּֽרוּ׃ | For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. | For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. |
תְּֽנָה־ עָ֭וֺן עַל־ עֲוֺנָ֑ם וְאַל־ יָ֝בֹ֗אוּ בְּצִדְקָתֶֽךָ׃ | Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. | Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. |
יִ֭מָּחֽוּ מִסֵּ֣פֶר חַיִּ֑ים וְעִ֥ם צַ֝דִּיקִ֗ים אַל־ יִכָּתֵֽבוּ׃ | Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. | May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. |
וַ֭אֲנִי עָנִ֣י וְכוֹאֵ֑ב יְשׁוּעָתְךָ֖ אֱלֹהִ֣ים תְּשַׂגְּבֵֽנִי׃ | But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high! | But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me. |
אֲהַֽלְלָ֣ה שֵׁם־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים בְּשִׁ֑יר וַאֲגַדְּלֶ֥נּוּ בְתוֹדָֽה׃ | I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. | I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. |
וְתִיטַ֣ב לַֽ֭יהוָה מִשּׁ֥וֹר פָּ֗ר מַקְרִ֥ן מַפְרִֽיס׃ | This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. | This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. |
רָא֣וּ עֲנָוִ֣ים יִשְׂמָ֑חוּ דֹּרְשֵׁ֥י אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים וִיחִ֥י לְבַבְכֶֽם׃ | When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. | The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live! |
כִּֽי־ שֹׁמֵ֣עַ אֶל־ אֶבְיוֹנִ֣ים יְהוָ֑ה וְאֶת־ אֲ֝סִירָ֗יו לֹ֣א בָזָֽה׃ | For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. | The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. |
יְֽ֭הַלְלוּהוּ שָׁמַ֣יִם וָאָ֑רֶץ יַ֝מִּ֗ים וְֽכָל־ רֹמֵ֥שׂ בָּֽם׃ | Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. | Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, |
כִּ֤י אֱלֹהִ֨ים ׀ י֘וֹשִׁ֤יעַ צִיּ֗וֹן וְ֭יִבְנֶה עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וְיָ֥שְׁבוּ שָׁ֝֗ם וִירֵשֽׁוּהָ׃ | For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; | for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; |
וְזֶ֣רַע עֲ֭בָדָיו יִנְחָל֑וּהָ וְאֹהֲבֵ֥י שְׁ֝מ֗וֹ יִשְׁכְּנוּ־ בָֽהּ׃ | the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. | the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there. |
