| 11 | λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοὶ ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν καὶ δυσμῶν ἥξουσιν καὶ ἀνακλιθήσονται μετὰ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰακὼβ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν | I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, | I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. | |
| 12 | οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ τῆς βασιλείας ἐκβληθήσονται εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων | while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” | But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” | |
| 13 | Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ ἑκατοντάρχῃ Ὕπαγε ὡς ἐπίστευσας γενηθήτω σοι καὶ ἰάθη ὁ παῖς [αὐτοῦ] ἐν τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐκείνῃ | And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. | Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! | 14 | Καὶ ἐλθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Πέτρου εἶδεν τὴν πενθερὰν αὐτοῦ βεβλημένην καὶ πυρέσσουσαν | And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. | When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. | |
| 15 | καὶ ἥψατο τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτὴν ὁ πυρετός καὶ ἠγέρθη καὶ διηκόνει αὐτῷ | He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. | He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. | |
| 16 | Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δαιμονιζομένους πολλούς καὶ ἐξέβαλεν τὰ πνεύματα λόγῳ καὶ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ἐθεράπευσεν | That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. | When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. | |
| 17 | ὅπως πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος Αὐτὸς τὰς ἀσθενείας ἡμῶν ἔλαβεν καὶ τὰς νόσους ἐβάστασεν | This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.” | This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” | |
| 18 | Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ‹πολλοὺς› ὄχλον περὶ αὐτὸν ἐκέλευσεν ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὸ πέραν | Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. | When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. | |
| 19 | Καὶ προσελθὼν εἷς γραμματεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε ἀκολουθήσω σοι ὅπου ἐὰν ἀπέρχῃ | And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” | Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” | |
| 20 | Καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Αἱ ἀλώπεκες φωλεοὺς ἔχουσιν καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκηνώσεις ὁ δὲ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἔχει ποῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν κλίνῃ | And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” | Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” | |
| 21 | Ἕτερος δὲ τῶν μαθητῶν [αὐτοῦ] εἶπεν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἐπίτρεψόν μοι πρῶτον ἀπελθεῖν καὶ θάψαι τὸν πατέρα μου | Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” | Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” | |
| 22 | Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀκολούθει μοι καὶ ἄφες τοὺς νεκροὺς θάψαι τοὺς ἑαυτῶν νεκρούς | And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.” | But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” | |
| 23 | Καὶ ἐμβάντι αὐτῷ εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ | And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. | Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. | |
| 24 | καὶ ἰδοὺ σεισμὸς μέγας ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ ὥστε τὸ πλοῖον καλύπτεσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων αὐτὸς δὲ ἐκάθευδεν | And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. | Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. | |
| 25 | καὶ προσελθόντες ἤγειραν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Κύριε σῶσον ἀπολλύμεθα | And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” | The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” | |
| 26 | Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί δειλοί ἐστε ὀλιγόπιστοι τότε ἐγερθεὶς ἐπετίμησεν τοῖς ἀνέμοις καὶ τῇ θαλάσσῃ καὶ ἐγένετο γαλήνη μεγάλη | And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. | He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. | |
| 27 | Οἱ δὲ ἄνθρωποι ἐθαύμασαν λέγοντες Ποταπός ἐστιν οὗτος ὅτι καὶ οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ ἡ θάλασσα αὐτῷ ὑπακούουσιν | And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” | The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” | |
| 28 | Καὶ ἐλθόντος αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πέραν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ δύο δαιμονιζόμενοι ἐκ τῶν μνημείων ἐξερχόμενοι χαλεποὶ λίαν ὥστε μὴ ἰσχύειν τινὰ παρελθεῖν διὰ τῆς ὁδοῦ ἐκείνης | And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. | When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. | |
| 29 | Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί Υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἦλθες ὧδε πρὸ καιροῦ βασανίσαι ἡμᾶς | And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” | “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” | |
| 30 | Ἦν δὲ μακρὰν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ἀγέλη χοίρων πολλῶν βοσκομένη | Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. | Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. | |
| 31 | οἱ δὲ δαίμονες παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Εἰ ἐκβάλλεις ἡμᾶς ἀπόστειλον ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν ἀγέλην τῶν χοίρων | And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” | The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” | |
| 32 | Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε οἱ δὲ ἐξελθόντες ἀπῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους καὶ ἰδοὺ ὥρμησεν πᾶσα ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἀπέθανον ἐν τοῖς ὕδασιν | And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. | He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. | |
| 33 | Οἱ δὲ βόσκοντες ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπήγγειλαν πάντα καὶ τὰ τῶν δαιμονιζομένων | The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. | Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. | |
| 34 | καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶσα ἡ πόλις ἐξῆλθεν εἰς ὑπάντησιν τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν παρεκάλεσαν ὅπως μεταβῇ ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν | And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region. | Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region. | |
