With stringed instruments.… To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” It was to be sung according to an established melody, likely one associated with a plea for preservation. Psa 58:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”… A Miktam of David, David composed this psalm from personal experience as a fugitive, expressing both distress and confidence in God. Psa 16:1 A Miktam of David. Preserve me, O God, for in You… when he fled from Saul into the cave. Saul pursued David in an effort to kill him, and David found refuge in the caves of the Judean wilderness, possibly at Adullam or En Gedi. 1Sa 22:1 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.… Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy, Surrounded by danger, David urgently appeals to God rather than seeking revenge against Saul. Psa 86:3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I call to You all day long. for in You my soul takes refuge. His safety rests ultimately in the Lord, not in the cave, his companions, or his own skill. Psa 61:3-4 For You have been my refuge, a tower of strength… In the shadow of Your wings I will take shelter David portrays God’s protection as near, personal, and secure. Psa 17:8 Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow… until the danger has passed. He expects the threat to end in God’s time and waits for deliverance under His care. Isa 26:20 Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors… I cry out to God Most High, David appeals to the sovereign ruler over heaven and earth while hiding from Saul’s pursuit. His cry arises from danger, yet it rests on confidence that no human enemy stands beyond God’s authority. Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried… to God who fulfills His purpose for me. David trusts that God will complete what He has ordained for his life, including His promise to establish him as king. Though circumstances appear uncertain, God’s purposes remain sure and cannot be overturned by opposition. Psa 138:8 The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me.… He reaches down from heaven and saves me; God, enthroned above all creation, acts personally to deliver David from danger. His rescue recalls His deliverance of Israel from bondage and anticipates the salvation accomplished when Christ came from heaven to redeem sinners. 2Sa 22:17 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;… He rebukes those who trample me. God judges those who violently oppress His servant. David’s enemies may appear strong, but their assault is subject to God’s authority, and He defends those who belong to Him. Psa 56:1 Be merciful to me, O God, for men are hounding me;… Selah The pause calls attention to the certainty of God’s intervention and the seriousness of His judgment. Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.… God sends forth His loving devotion and His truth. God’s steadfast love and faithfulness come to David’s aid. He remains true to His covenant promises, bringing protection and deliverance according to His righteous character. Psa 61:7 May he sit enthroned in God’s presence forever;… My soul is among the lions; David describes himself as surrounded by fierce enemies while fleeing the dangers created by Saul’s pursuit. The image conveys real peril, not merely anxiety, as those opposing him had power to harm him. Psa 22:13 They open their jaws against me like lions… I lie down with ravenous beasts— Though exposed and vulnerable, he remains in God’s care. His enemies are portrayed as predatory and eager to destroy, like beasts waiting upon their prey. Ezk 22:27 Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey… with men whose teeth are spears and arrows, Their chief weapons are false charges, threats, and hostile words intended to wound and ruin him. Pro 30:14 there is a generation whose teeth are swords… whose tongues are sharp swords. David recognizes that slander can be as destructive as physical violence, yet he entrusts his defense and deliverance to God. Psa 64:3 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim… Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; David’s danger did not diminish God’s rule. Though pursued by Saul and confined to hiding places, he looked beyond his immediate circumstances to the Lord’s authority over every realm of creation. He asks God to display openly the majesty that is already His. Psa 108:5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; may Your glory… may Your glory cover all the earth. David’s deliverance would reveal God’s faithfulness, but his prayer reaches beyond personal rescue. He desires that God’s power, righteousness, and mercy be known throughout the world, anticipating the day when the Lord’s reign is fully acknowledged among all nations. Psa 72:19 And blessed be His glorious name forever; may all the earth… They spread a net for my feet; David’s enemies pursued him with calculated malice, seeking to trap him as hunters capture prey. Their opposition was not accidental but deliberate, aimed at bringing down the king God had chosen. Lam 1:13 He sent fire from on high, and it overpowered my bones.… my soul was despondent. Constant danger weighed heavily on David. Though he trusted God, he did not deny the fear and sorrow produced by betrayal, pursuit, and the threat of death. Psa 42:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me?… They dug a pit before me, His adversaries prepared his destruction in advance, like men setting a concealed trap. The pit portrays their intent to ruin him completely. Jer 18:20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit… but they themselves have fallen into it! God overturned their plans, bringing their evil back upon them. The enemies who sought David’s downfall became victims of their own schemes, displaying God’s justice and protection of His servant. Psa 9:15-16 The nations have fallen into a pit of their making;… Selah Selah, a pause for reflection or musical interlude, calls for reflection on God’s power to frustrate wicked plans and preserve those who depend on Him. Psa 3:2 Many say of me, “God will not deliver him.” Selah My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast. David declares an unshaken resolve to trust God while fleeing from Saul and hiding in a cave. Though surrounded by danger, he fixes his whole being—his thoughts, will, and affections—on the Lord’s protection and faithfulness. The repeated declaration underscores his settled confidence despite uncertain circumstances. Psa 108:1 A song. A Psalm of David. My heart is steadfast, O God;… I will sing and make music. David answers distress with worship. Rather than allowing fear to govern him, he prepares to praise God openly, reflecting confidence that the Lord will deliver him and display His glory. Eph 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns… Awake, my glory! The psalmist summons his whole inner being to rise in praise. His heart is fixed on God, even after danger and distress, and he refuses to remain silent. Psa 108:1 A song. A Psalm of David. My heart is steadfast, O God;… Awake, O harp and lyre! Instruments used in Israel’s worship are called to join the song. Music accompanied praise in personal devotion and public worship, giving expression to joy, thanksgiving, and confidence in the Lord. Psa 33:2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to Him… I will awaken the dawn. David intends to begin before daybreak with praise. Rather than waiting for the day to stir him, he rises to honor God, declaring trust in the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness. Psa 108:2 Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations; David’s deliverance from Saul would display God’s faithfulness beyond Israel’s borders. His worship looks beyond private gratitude to the public acknowledgment of the Lord’s rule among all peoples. God’s covenant purposes for Israel were never confined to one nation, but pointed toward His glory being known throughout the earth. Psa 18:49 Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations;… I will sing Your praises among the peoples. Singing expresses David’s joyful response to God’s mercy and protection. Though surrounded by enemies, he commits himself to proclaiming God’s greatness among every people group. The psalm anticipates the worldwide worship of the Lord fulfilled through Christ and ultimately seen when people from every nation stand before God’s throne. Psa 108:3 I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations;… For Your loving devotion reaches to the heavens, God’s covenant love is without limit, extending beyond all earthly bounds. David speaks from the distress of his flight from Saul, yet rests in the certainty that God’s mercy remains greater than danger, opposition, or human instability. God’s love sustains His people and fulfills His promises. Psa 103:11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,… and Your faithfulness to the clouds. God is wholly reliable in all He has spoken and done. The clouds, high above the earth, portray the vast reach of His steadfastness. Though David’s circumstances were uncertain, the Lord’s faithfulness was constant and would preserve him according to His purpose. Psa 36:5 Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,… Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; David appeals to the Lord whose rule stands above every earthly power and the highest reaches of creation. While hiding from Saul in the wilderness, he looked beyond his immediate danger to God’s unchallenged majesty and authority. Psa 99:2 Great is the LORD in Zion; He is exalted… may Your glory cover all the earth. David’s deliverance would display God’s faithfulness before the nations. The prayer reaches beyond his personal rescue to the day when God’s righteous reign and glory are openly known throughout the world.
