Berean Study Bible A Warning against ApostasyThe Holy Spirit gives a clear and authoritative warning to the church. What follows is not speculation about future conditions but divine revelation concerning dangers believers will face. Act 21:11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt,… that in later times The period between Christ’s ascension and return will include increasing spiritual deception and rebellion. Even as the gospel spreads, false religion and moral corruption will also grow. 2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days… some will abandon the faith Some who professed Christian belief will depart from the truth once delivered to the church. Their departure reveals the destructive power of error and the danger of turning from sound doctrine. 2Th 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come… to follow deceitful spirits Behind false teaching are demonic powers that seek to mislead people from Christ. Spiritual error is not merely intellectual confusion but part of an ongoing conflict against evil spiritual forces. 1Ki 22:22-23 And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit… and the teachings of demons, Demonic influence produces doctrines that distort God’s truth, undermine the gospel, and draw people away from obedience to Christ. The church must recognize such teaching for what it is and remain anchored in the truth of God’s Word. 1Co 10:20-21 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons.… influenced by the hypocrisy of liars, False teachers spread error while presenting themselves as spiritual and trustworthy. Their outward appearance of devotion concealed deliberate deception, much like religious leaders who maintained a public display of righteousness while resisting God’s truth. Mat 23:28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous,… whose consciences are seared with a hot iron. Persistent rebellion had made them hardened and insensitive to guilt. Like flesh scarred by a branding iron, their moral awareness had become dulled, allowing them to promote falsehood without shame or restraint. 1Ti 1:19 holding on to faith and a good conscience… They will prohibit marriage Some false teachers promoted asceticism by treating marriage as spiritually inferior or defiling. Such teaching rejects God’s design, for He established marriage at creation as a good and honorable union between a man and a woman. Groups influenced by dualistic ideas, including some Gnostic movements, regarded the physical world as evil and therefore condemned marriage and family life. Their error denied both the goodness of creation and the place of marriage in God’s purposes. Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed… and require abstinence from certain foods These teachers also imposed food restrictions as a measure of holiness. Although God gave dietary laws to Israel for a particular covenant purpose, believers in Christ are not made righteous by avoiding foods God has provided. Such rules turned outward discipline into a false spiritual requirement and obscured the freedom of those who belong to Christ. Col 2:16 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,… that God has created to be received with thanksgiving Food is part of God’s good creation and is to be received as His provision. Gratitude acknowledges that every legitimate gift comes from Him and guards against both self-indulgence and the rejection of what He has made. Gen 1:29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you… by those who believe and know the truth. Those who believe the gospel recognize God as Creator and receive His gifts according to His Word. Their freedom is guided by truth, gratitude, and obedience rather than by man-made prohibitions. 2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers… For every creation of God is good, God’s work in creation was declared good from the beginning, and humanity’s fall did not make the created order evil in itself. Paul addresses teachers who forbade marriage and certain foods as though physical things were inherently corrupt. Such restrictions contradicted God’s purpose in providing His gifts for human life and enjoyment. Gen 1:31 And God looked upon all that He had made… and nothing that is received with thanksgiving Believers are to receive God’s provision with gratitude, recognizing Him as the giver. Food, marriage, and other lawful gifts are not sanctified by human rules but by thankful acknowledgment of God’s goodness and provision. Rom 14:6 He who observes a special day does so to the Lord;… should be rejected, Paul does not permit sinful or harmful conduct, but he rejects the idea that God’s good gifts must be refused to achieve holiness. The error of ascetic teachers lay in treating what God had made as unclean, rather than receiving it rightly under God’s authority. Act 10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time: Do not call anything… because it is sanctified God’s good gifts are sanctified, set apart for a holy purpose, and proper for use when received according to His will. Paul addresses false teachers who treated marriage and certain foods as defiling, contrary to God’s purpose in creation. Gen 2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it,… by the word of God God’s revealed word declares His creation good and gives His people the standard for receiving it rightly. Food is not made unclean by human religious restrictions when God has permitted it. 2Pe 3:5 But they deliberately overlook the fact that long ago… and prayer. Believers receive God’s provisions with thanksgiving, acknowledging Him as the giver, praying for His blessing and guidance, and seeking to use His gifts in a manner that honors Him. Php 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer…
A Good Servant of Jesus ChristTimothy was to place Paul’s warnings about apostasy, false teaching, and godly conduct before the congregation. The church needed regular instruction so that believers could recognize error and remain grounded in the truth. A minister cannot sustain others in truth while neglecting the truth that nourishes his own faith. 1Pe 2:2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk… and sound instruction Healthy teaching stands in contrast to the myths, speculation, and false doctrines troubling the church. It preserves the truth of the gospel and directs believers toward godly living. Tit 1:9 He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught… that you have followed. Timothy had consistently held to the instruction passed down through Paul and the other apostles. His established pattern of faithfulness gave weight to his ministry among the believers. 2Ti 3:10 You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct,… But reject irreverent, silly myths. Timothy was to refuse teachings that treated holy things lightly or promoted speculative stories in place of God’s revealed truth. Such ideas circulated in the religious environment of Ephesus and could distract the church from the gospel and sound instruction. 2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate… Instead, train yourself for godliness. Spiritual maturity requires deliberate discipline rather than passive belief. Like an athlete preparing for competition, Timothy was to devote himself to habits that shape faithful conduct, sound doctrine, prayer, and obedience. Godliness reflects a life increasingly conformed to God’s holiness and character. 1Ti 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things… For physical exercise is of limited value, Physical training benefits the body and was widely practiced in the Greco-Roman world, where gymnasiums were common features of city life. Yet its benefits are temporary and limited to this present life. Col 2:23 Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom… but godliness is valuable in every way, A life ordered by reverence for God, sound doctrine, and obedient conduct benefits the whole person and shapes relationships within the church and the world. 1Ti 6:6 Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain. holding promise for the present life Godly living brings present blessings such as wisdom, peace, moral stability, and a clear purpose under God’s care. Eph 6:2-3 “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment…)… and for the one to come. Its value continues beyond death, because God has promised eternal life to those who belong to Christ. Mrk 10:29-30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home… This is a trustworthy saying, Paul marks the following instruction as a settled and reliable truth, especially important amid the false teaching troubling the church at Ephesus. Timothy was to treat it as an established part of apostolic doctrine. 1Ti 1:15 This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance:… worthy of full acceptance. The teaching was to be received by the whole church without reservation. Godliness and the hope of eternal life were not secondary matters but essential truths shaping Christian belief and conduct. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… To this end we labor and strive, Paul describes the costly work of ministry and faithful Christian service. Timothy was to persist in teaching truth, resisting error, and caring for the church despite opposition and hardship. Col 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy… because we have set our hope on the living God, Their endurance rested on confidence in the true God, who is present, active, and faithful to fulfill His promises. Unlike the lifeless idols of the surrounding culture, He governs history and gives life to His people. 1Th 1:9-10 For they themselves report what kind of welcome you gave us,… who is the Savior of everyone, God is the only source of deliverance and life for all mankind. His saving provision in Christ is offered to every person, and His preserving care extends over all creation. 1Ti 2:3-4 This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,… and especially of those who believe. Salvation is received by those who place their faith in Christ. Believers uniquely know God’s saving grace and possess the eternal life He has promised. Rom 10:11-13 It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes… Command Paul directs Timothy to carry out these instructions with the authority entrusted to him as a pastor in Ephesus. Tit 2:1 But as for you, speak the things that are consistent… these things. The instructions include rejecting false teaching, training in godliness, recognizing the value of present and eternal life, and holding firmly to the trustworthy message of Christ. 1Ti 6:2 Those who have believing masters should not show disrespect… Let no one despise your youth, Timothy’s relative youth could have led some in Ephesus to question his authority. Paul does not tell him to demand respect based on office or age, but to live in a way that gives no legitimate grounds for contempt. God’s call and spiritual maturity are not restricted to older men. 1Co 16:10-11 If Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear… but set an example for the believers Timothy was to lead visibly through a life that matched the message he taught. His example would strengthen the church and show that pastoral authority is joined to faithful character. 1Co 4:16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. in speech, His words were to be truthful, gracious, and useful for building up others. Timothy was to maintain moral cleanliness in thought, relationships, and behavior. In a corrupt setting, a pure life marked him as a servant devoted to God and worthy of imitation. 2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness… Until I come, Paul expected Timothy to remain in Ephesus and oversee the church until he could return. The Ephesian congregation faced false teaching and disorder, making steady pastoral leadership necessary during Paul’s absence. Rev 2:25 than to hold fast to what you have until I come. devote yourself Timothy was to give sustained attention to the central duties of his ministry rather than be distracted by controversy or opposition. Act 6:4 and will devote ourselves to prayer and to the…… to the public reading of Scripture, In a setting where few believers possessed personal copies of the sacred writings, Scripture was read aloud to the assembled church. This continued the synagogue pattern and placed God’s Word at the center of worship. Neh 8:8 So they read from the Book of the Law of God, explaining it… to exhortation, Timothy was to urge believers to respond faithfully to what they heard, applying biblical truth to conduct, endurance, and life together in the church. Rom 12:8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage;… and to teaching. He was also to provide clear instruction in sound doctrine, protecting the congregation from error and establishing them in the truth. 2Ti 2:2 And the things that you have heard me say… Do not neglect the gift that is in you, Timothy had received a spiritual gift for his ministry, and Paul urged him to use it faithfully rather than allowing fear, opposition, or inactivity to hinder its exercise. Such gifts were given for the strengthening and service of the church. 2Ti 1:6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame… which was given you through the prophecy A prophetic message, a direct revelation from God, had publicly confirmed God’s calling and provision for Timothy’s work. This was not merely personal encouragement but a recognition that the Lord had set him apart for ministry. 1Ti 1:18 Timothy, my child, I entrust you with this command… spoken over you at the laying on of the hands Timothy’s commissioning included prayer and the laying on of hands, a solemn act by which church leaders identified him with the work to which God had called him and entrusted him with ministry responsibility. 1Ti 5:22 Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands… of the elders. The elders joined in recognizing Timothy’s calling. Their participation showed that his ministry was affirmed within the ordered leadership of the local church, not undertaken independently or without accountability. 1Ti 5:17 Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor… Be diligent in these matters Timothy was to give sustained attention to the responsibilities Paul had entrusted to him: teaching sound doctrine, guarding the church from error, and living as an example to the believers. 2Ti 2:15 Make every effort to present yourself approved to God,… and absorbed in them, His ministry was not to be secondary or occasional. Php 1:25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain… will be evident to all. The believers in Ephesus were to see clear evidence of Timothy’s growth in character, teaching, and leadership, confirming the sincerity and fruit of his ministry. Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,… Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Timothy’s conduct and instruction were inseparable. As a leader in the church at Ephesus, he needed to guard his character as carefully as the truth he taught. False teachers endangered the church through both corrupt doctrine and ungodly lives, while Timothy was to provide a faithful example of the gospel. Act 20:28-31 Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock… Persevere in these things, The work required steady devotion. Timothy was not to be distracted by opposition, discouraged by hardship, or drawn away by error. Continued faithfulness in godly living and sound teaching would strengthen the church and preserve its witness. 2Ti 4:5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship… for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you. Paul does not present salvation as earned by Timothy’s efforts. Rather, faithful endurance in the truth would guard him and his hearers from destructive error and lead them to remain in the saving gospel. Timothy’s ministry carried real responsibility because his teaching would shape the spiritual direction of those entrusted to his care. 1Pe 1:9 now that you are receiving the goal of your faith… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
