I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.’”	And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.	and I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent <i>messengers</i> to tell my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.”’”	I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’”
6	When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you— he and four hundred men with him.”	And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.”	And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.	And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”	When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
7	In great fear and distress, Jacob divided his people into two camps, as well as the flocks and herds and camels.	Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. 8	He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one camp, then the other camp can escape.”	thinking, “If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape.”	And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.	for he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the company which is left will escape.”	He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.”
9	Then Jacob declared, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, the LORD who told me, ‘Go back to your country and to your kindred, and I will make you prosper,’	And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’	And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:	Then Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, LORD, who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’	Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, LORD, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’
10	I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.	I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.	I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.	I am unworthy of all the favor and of all the faithfulness, which You have shown to Your servant; for with <i>only</i> my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.	I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
11	Please deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid that he may come and attack me and the mothers and children with me.	Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children.	Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, <i>and</i> the mother with the children.	Save me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and attack me <i>and</i> the mothers with the children.	Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.
12	But You have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to count.’ ”	But you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”	And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.	For You said, ‘I will assuredly make you prosper and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be counted.’”	But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”
13	Jacob spent the night there, and from what he had brought with him, he selected a gift for his brother Esau:	So he stayed there that night, and from what he had with him he took a present for his brother Esau,	And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;	So he spent the night there. 16	He entrusted them to his servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds.”	These he handed over to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on ahead of me and put a space between drove and drove.”	And he delivered <i>them</i> into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.	Then he placed <i>them</i> in the care of his servants, every flock by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on ahead of me, and put a space between flocks.”	He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”
17	He instructed the one in the lead, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong, where are you going, and whose animals are these before you?’	He instructed the first, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, ‘To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these ahead of you?’	And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose <i>art</i> thou? and whither goest thou? and whose <i>are</i> these before thee?	And he commanded the one in front, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these <i>animals</i> in front of you belong?’	He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’
18	then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift, sent to my lord Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us.’ ”	then you shall say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a present sent to my lord Esau. And moreover, he is behind us.’”	Then thou shalt say, <i>They be</i> thy servant Jacob's; it <i>is</i> a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he <i>is</i> behind us.	then you shall say, ‘<i>These</i> belong to your servant Jacob; it is a gift sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.’”	then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”
19	He also instructed the second, the third, and all those following behind the herds: “When you meet Esau, you are to say the same thing to him.	He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, “You shall say the same thing to Esau when you find him,	And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.	Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the flocks, saying, “In this way you shall speak to Esau when you find him;	He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
20	You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’ ” For he thought, “I will appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.	and you shall say, ‘Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.’” For he thought, “I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterward I shall see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”	And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob <i>is</i> behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.	and you shall say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease him with the gift that goes ahead of me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”	And be sure to say, ‘Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”
21	So Jacob’s gifts went on before him, while he spent the night in the camp.	So the present passed on ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.	So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.	So the gift passed on ahead of him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.	So Jacob’s gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
22	During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.	The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.	And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.	Now he got up that same night and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his eleven children, and crossed the shallow place of the Jabbok.	That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
23	He took them and sent them across the stream, along with all his possessions.	He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 25	When the man saw that he could not overpower Jacob, he struck the socket of Jacob’s hip and dislocated it as they wrestled.	When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.	And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.	When <i>the man</i> saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was dislocated while he wrestled with him.	When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
26	Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”	Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”	And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.	Then he said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.” But he said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”	Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
27	“What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob,” he replied.	And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”	And he said unto him, What <i>is</i> thy name? And he said, Jacob.	So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”	The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.
28	Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.”	Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”	And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.	Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed.”	Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
29	And Jacob requested, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there.	Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.	And Jacob asked <i>him</i>, and said, Tell <i>me</i>, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore <i>is</i> it <i>that</i> thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.	And Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there.	Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
30	So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “Indeed, I have seen God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”	So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”	And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.	So Jacob named the place Peniel, for <i>he said,</i> “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared.”	So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
31	The sun rose above him as he passed by Penuel, and he was limping because of his hip.	The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.	And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.	Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his hip.	The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.
32	Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon which is at the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was struck near that tendon.	Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip on the sinew of the thigh.	Therefore the children of Israel eat not <i>of</i> the sinew which shrank, which <i>is</i> upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.	Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the tendon of the hip which is on the socket of the hip, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the tendon of the hip.	Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.
