3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, Blessed <i>be</i> God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Blessed <i>be</i> the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
5 For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which accomplishes in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we experience. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. And whether we be afflicted, <i>it is</i> for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, <i>it is</i> for your consolation and salvation. But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.
7 And our hope for you is sure, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you will share in our comfort. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort. And our hope of you <i>is</i> stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so <i>shall ye be</i> also of the consolation. and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are partners in our sufferings, so also you are in our comfort. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
8 We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we encountered in the province of Asia. We were under a burden far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers <i>and sisters,</i> of our affliction which occurred in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life. We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.
9 Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death, in order that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raises the dead. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead, Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. In Him we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver us, He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver <i>us</i>; who rescued us from so great a <i>danger of</i> death, and will rescue <i>us,</i> He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us, He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us,
11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the favor shown us in answer to their prayers. You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many. Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift <i>bestowed</i> upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf. <i>if</i> you also join in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons in our behalf for the favor <i>granted</i> to us through <i>the prayers of</i> many. as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
12 And this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in relation to you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God— not in worldly wisdom, but in the grace of God. For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you. Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace.
13 For we do not write you anything that is beyond your ability to read and understand. And I hope that you will understand us completely, For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand— For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; For we write nothing else to you than what you read and understand, and I hope you will understand until the end; For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that,
14 as you have already understood us in part, so that you may boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of our Lord Jesus. just as you did partially understand us—that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you. As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also <i>are</i> ours in the day of the Lord Jesus. just as you also partially did understand us, that we are your reason to be proud as you also are ours, on the day of our Lord Jesus. as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.
15 Confident of this, I planned to visit you first, so that you might receive a double blessing. Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace. And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; In this confidence I intended at first to come to you, so that you might twice receive a blessing; Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you first so that you might benefit twice.
16 I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to return to you from Macedonia, and then to have you help me on my way to Judea. I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea. And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea. that is, to pass your way into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and by you to be helped on my journey to Judea. I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea.
17 When I planned this, did I do it carelessly? Or do I make my plans by human standards, so as to say “Yes, yes when I really mean “No, no Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time? When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? Therefore, I was not vacillating when I intended to do this, was I? Or what I decide, do I decide according to the flesh, so that with me there will be yes, yes and no, no <i>at the same time?</i> Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no|?
18 But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. But <i>as</i> God <i>is</i> true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. But <i>as</i> God is faithful, our word to you is not yes and no. But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.”
19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed among you by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not “Yes and “No, but in Him it has always been “Yes. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, <i>even</i> by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. For the Son of God, Christ Jesus, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silvanus and Timothy—was not yes and no, but has been yes in Him. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.”
20 For all the promises of God are “Yes in Christ. And so through Him, our “Amen is spoken to the glory of God. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. For all the promises of God in him <i>are</i> yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. For as many as the promises of God are, in Him they are yes; therefore through Him also is our Amen to the glory of God through us. For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
21 Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, <i>is</i> God; Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,
22 placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come. and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. who also sealed us and gave <i>us</i> the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
23 I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth. But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth. But I call God as witness to my soul, that <i>it was</i> to spare you <i>that</i> I did not come again to Corinth. I call God as my witness—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.
24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers with you for your joy, because it is by faith that you stand firm. Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand. Not that we domineer over your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy; for in your faith you are standing firm. Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.
