1 So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you. For I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you. But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness. But I decided this for my own sake, that I would not come to you in sorrow again. So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.
2 For if I grieve you, who is left to cheer me but those whom I have grieved? For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me? For if I cause you sorrow, who then <i>will be</i> the one making me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me? For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?
3 I wrote as I did so that on my arrival I would not be saddened by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would share my joy. And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is <i>the joy</i> of you all. This is the very thing I wrote you, so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy was <i>the joy</i> of you all. I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.
4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart, not to grieve you but to let you know how much I love you. For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you. For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.
5 Now if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me but all of you— to some degree, not to overstate it. Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you. But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. But if anyone has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not for me, but in some degree—not to say too much—for all of you. If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely.
6 The punishment imposed on him by the majority is sufficient for him. For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, Sufficient to such a man <i>is</i> this punishment, which <i>was inflicted</i> of many. Sufficient for such a person is this punishment which <i>was imposed</i> by the majority, The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.
7 So instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So that contrariwise ye <i>ought</i> rather to forgive <i>him</i>, and comfort <i>him</i>, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. so that on the other hand, you should rather forgive and comfort <i>him,</i> otherwise such a person might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
8 Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm <i>your</i> love toward him. Therefore I urge you to reaffirm <i>your</i> love for him. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.
9 My purpose in writing you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. For to this end I also wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And if I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven it in the presence of Christ for your sake, Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, To whom ye forgive any thing, I <i>forgive</i> also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave <i>it</i>, for your sakes <i>forgave I it</i> in the person of Christ; But one whom you forgive anything, I also <i>forgive;</i> for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, <i>I did so</i> for your sakes in the presence of Christ, Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
11 in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs. Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.
14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. Now thanks <i>be</i> unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. 15 For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing: For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
16 To the one, we are an odor of death and demise; to the other, a fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task? to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? To the one <i>we are</i> the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who <i>is</i> sufficient for these things? to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?
17 For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as men sent from God. For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ. For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. For we are not like the many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God. Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.
