Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives,1Ὁμοίως [αἱ] γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν ἵνα καὶ εἴ τινες ἀπειθοῦσιν τῷ λόγῳ διὰ τῆς τῶν γυναικῶν ἀναστροφῆς ἄνευ λόγου κερδηθήσονται
when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.2ἐποπτεύσαντες τὴν ἐν φόβῳ ἁγνὴν ἀναστροφὴν ὑμῶν
Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—3ὧν ἔστω οὐχ ἔξωθεν ἐμπλοκῆς τριχῶν καὶ περιθέσεως χρυσίων ἐνδύσεως ἱματίων κόσμος
rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.4ἀλλ’ κρυπτὸς τῆς καρδίας ἄνθρωπος ἐν τῷ ἀφθάρτῳ τοῦ πραέως καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος ἐστιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ πολυτελές
For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,5Οὕτως γάρ ποτε καὶ αἱ ἅγιαι γυναῖκες αἱ ἐλπίζουσαι εἰς Θεὸν ἐκόσμουν ἑαυτάς ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν
as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.6ὡς Σάρρα ὑπήκουσεν τῷ Ἀβραάμ κύριον αὐτὸν καλοῦσα ἧς ἐγενήθητε τέκνα ἀγαθοποιοῦσαι καὶ μὴ φοβούμεναι μηδεμίαν πτόησιν
Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.7Οἱ ἄνδρες ὁμοίως συνοικοῦντες κατὰ γνῶσιν ὡς ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει τῷ γυναικείῳ ἀπονέμοντες τιμήν ὡς καὶ συνκληρονόμοις χάριτος ζωῆς εἰς τὸ μὴ ἐνκόπτεσθαι τὰς προσευχὰς ὑμῶν
Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;8Τὸ δὲ τέλος πάντες ὁμόφρονες συμπαθεῖς φιλάδελφοι εὔσπλαγχνοι ταπεινόφρονες
not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.9μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ λοιδορίαν ἀντὶ λοιδορίας τοὐναντίον δὲ εὐλογοῦντες ὅτι εἰς τοῦτο ἐκλήθητε ἵνα εὐλογίαν κληρονομήσητε
For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.10 γὰρ θέλων ζωὴν ἀγαπᾶν καὶ ἰδεῖν ἡμέρας ἀγαθὰς παυσάτω τὴν γλῶσσαν ἀπὸ κακοῦ καὶ χείλη τοῦ μὴ λαλῆσαι δόλον
Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.11ἐκκλινάτω δὲ ἀπὸ κακοῦ καὶ ποιησάτω ἀγαθόν ζητησάτω εἰρήνην καὶ διωξάτω αὐτήν
For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.”12ὅτι ὀφθαλμοὶ Κυρίου ἐπὶ δικαίους καὶ ὦτα αὐτοῦ εἰς δέησιν αὐτῶν πρόσωπον δὲ Κυρίου ἐπὶ ποιοῦντας κακά
And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good?13Καὶ τίς κακώσων ὑμᾶς ἐὰν τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ ζηλωταὶ γένησθε
But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”14Ἀλλ’ εἰ καὶ πάσχοιτε διὰ δικαιοσύνην μακάριοι Τὸν δὲ φόβον αὐτῶν μὴ φοβηθῆτε μηδὲ ταραχθῆτε
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;15Κύριον δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν ἕτοιμοι ἀεὶ πρὸς ἀπολογίαν παντὶ τῷ αἰτοῦντι ὑμᾶς λόγον περὶ τῆς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐλπίδος ἀλλὰ μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου
having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.16συνείδησιν ἔχοντες ἀγαθήν ἵνα ἐν καταλαλεῖσθε καταισχυνθῶσιν οἱ ἐπηρεάζοντες ὑμῶν τὴν ἀγαθὴν ἐν Χριστῷ ἀναστροφήν
For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.17κρεῖττον γὰρ ἀγαθοποιοῦντας εἰ θέλοι τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ πάσχειν κακοποιοῦντας
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,18ὅτι καὶ Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν* δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ Θεῷ θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ ζωοποιηθεὶς δὲ πνεύματι
by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,19ἐν καὶ τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν
who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.20ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε ὅτε ἀπεξεδέχετο τοῦ Θεοῦ μακροθυμία ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ εἰς ἣν ὀλίγοι τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ὀκτὼ ψυχαί διεσώθησαν δι’ ὕδατος
There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,21 καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀντίτυπον νῦν σῴζει βάπτισμα οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα εἰς Θεόν δι’ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.22ὅς ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ [τοῦ] Θεοῦ πορευθεὶς εἰς οὐρανόν ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων
