The Song of the Vineyard
(Luke 13:6–9)
1 אָשִׁ֤ירָה (Let me sing) נָּא֙ (now) לִֽידִידִ֔י (for my beloved) שִׁירַ֥ת (a song) דּוֹדִ֖י (of my beloved) לְכַרְמ֑וֹ (regarding his vineyard):
כֶּ֛רֶם (A vineyard) הָיָ֥ה (there was) לִֽידִידִ֖י (unto my beloved)
בְּקֶ֥רֶן (on a hill)— בֶּן־ (a son) שָֽׁמֶן׃ (of fatness).
2 וַֽיְעַזְּקֵ֣הוּ (And he dug it) וַֽיְסַקְּלֵ֗הוּ (and cleared it of stones)
וַיִּטָּעֵ֙הוּ֙ (and he planted it) שֹׂרֵ֔ק (with the choicest vine),
וַיִּ֤בֶן (and he built) מִגְדָּל֙ (a tower) בְּתוֹכ֔וֹ (in its midst)
וְגַם־ (and also) יֶ֖קֶב (a winepress) חָצֵ֣ב (he hewed out) בּ֑וֹ (in it).
וַיְקַ֛ו (And he waited) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (for it to make) עֲנָבִ֖ים (grapes),
וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (and it made) בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃ (wild grapes).
3 וְעַתָּ֛ה (And now), יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (O dweller) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem)
וְאִ֣ישׁ (and man) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah),
שִׁפְטוּ־ (judge) נָ֕א (please),
בֵּינִ֖י (between Me) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) כַּרְמִֽי׃ (My vineyard).
4 מַה־ (What) לַּעֲשׂ֥וֹת (could have been done) עוֹד֙ (more) לְכַרְמִ֔י (for My vineyard),
וְלֹ֥א (that not) עָשִׂ֖יתִי (I have done) בּ֑וֹ (in it).
מַדּ֧וּעַ (Why), קִוֵּ֛יתִי (I waited) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (for it to make) עֲנָבִ֖ים (grapes),
וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (and it made) בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃ (wild grapes)?
5 וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) אוֹדִֽיעָה־ (I will let know) נָּ֣א (-), אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺), אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) אֲנִ֥י (I) עֹשֶׂ֖ה (am going to do) לְכַרְמִ֑י (to My vineyard):
הָסֵ֤ר (I will take away) מְשׂוּכָּתוֹ֙ (its hedge),
וְהָיָ֣ה (and it will be) לְבָעֵ֔ר (consumed)
פָּרֹ֥ץ (and the breaking down of) גְּדֵר֖וֹ (its wall),
וְהָיָ֥ה (and it will be free) לְמִרְמָֽס׃ (for trampling);
6 וַאֲשִׁיתֵ֣הוּ (and I will set it) בָתָ֗ה (as a waste);
לֹ֤א (not) יִזָּמֵר֙ (will it be pruned) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֵעָדֵ֔ר (hoed).
וְעָלָ֥ה (And there will come up) שָׁמִ֖יר (brier) וָשָׁ֑יִת (and thorn),
וְעַ֤ל (and also) הֶעָבִים֙ (the clouds) אֲצַוֶּ֔ה (I will command)
מֵהַמְטִ֥יר (against raining) עָלָ֖יו (on it) מָטָֽר׃ (with rain).
7 כִּ֣י (For) כֶ֜רֶם (the vineyard) יְהוָ֤ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאוֹת֙ (Hosts)
בֵּ֣ית (is the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel),
וְאִ֣ישׁ (and the men) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah)
נְטַ֖ע (are the plant) שַׁעֲשׁוּעָ֑יו (of His delight).
וַיְקַ֤ו (And He looked) לְמִשְׁפָּט֙ (for justice),
וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold), מִשְׂפָּ֔ח (bloodshed)—
לִצְדָקָ֖ה (for righteousness),
וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), צְעָקָֽה׃ס (outcry).
Woes to the Wicked
8 ה֗וֹי (Woe) מַגִּיעֵ֥י (to those joining) בַ֙יִת֙ (house) בְּבַ֔יִת (to house);
שָׂדֶ֥ה (field) בְשָׂדֶ֖ה (to field) יַקְרִ֑יבוּ (they bring near),
עַ֚ד (until) אֶ֣פֶס (there is no) מָק֔וֹם (place to stand),
וְהֽוּשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם (and you⁺ are made to dwell) לְבַדְּכֶ֖ם (by yourselves alone) בְּקֶ֥רֶב (in the midst) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land)!
9 בְּאָזְנָ֖י (In my hearing)— יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) צְבָא֑וֹת (of Hosts):
אִם־ (If) לֹ֞א (not) בָּתִּ֤ים (houses) רַבִּים֙ (many) לְשַׁמָּ֣ה (a desolation) יִֽהְי֔וּ (will be)—
גְּדֹלִ֥ים (great) וְטוֹבִ֖ים (and fine s) מֵאֵ֥ין (without) יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ (one dwelling)?
10 כִּ֗י (For) עֲשֶׂ֙רֶת֙ (a ten) צִמְדֵּי־ (yoke) כֶ֔רֶם (vineyard)
יַעֲשׂ֖וּ (will yield) בַּ֣ת (bath) אֶחָ֑ת (one),
וְזֶ֥רַע (and of seed) חֹ֖מֶר (a homer)
יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (will yield) אֵיפָֽה׃פ (an ephah).
11 ה֛וֹי (Woe) מַשְׁכִּימֵ֥י (to those rising early) בַבֹּ֖קֶר (in the morning)
שֵׁכָ֣ר (strong drink) יִרְדֹּ֑פוּ (to pursue),
מְאַחֲרֵ֣י (tarrying) בַנֶּ֔שֶׁף (into the twilight)
יַ֖יִן (as wine) יַדְלִיקֵֽם׃ (inflames them).
12 וְהָיָ֨ה (Are) כִנּ֜וֹר (are the lyre) וָנֶ֗בֶל (and harp), תֹּ֧ף (and tambourine) וְחָלִ֛יל (and flute),
וָיַ֖יִן (and wine) מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֑ם (at their feasts);
וְאֵ֨ת (and) פֹּ֤עַל (the work) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) לֹ֣א (not) יַבִּ֔יטוּ (they do regard),
וּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (and the work) יָדָ֖יו (of His hands) לֹ֥א (not) רָאֽוּ׃ (do they see).
13 לָכֵ֛ן (Therefore) גָּלָ֥ה (have gone into captivity) עַמִּ֖י (my people),
מִבְּלִי־ (from lack) דָ֑עַת (of knowledge);
וּכְבוֹדוֹ֙ (and its honored) מְתֵ֣י (men) רָעָ֔ב (go hungry),
וַהֲמוֹנ֖וֹ (and its multitude) צִחֵ֥ה (is parched) צָמָֽא׃ (with thirst).
14 לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) הִרְחִ֤יבָה (has enlarged) שְּׁאוֹל֙ (Sheol) נַפְשָׁ֔הּ (her soul),
וּפָעֲרָ֥ה (and has opened) פִ֖יהָ (her mouth) לִבְלִי־ (beyond) חֹ֑ק (measure),
וְיָרַ֨ד (and will go down) הֲדָרָ֧הּ (the nobility of Jerusalem)
וַהֲמוֹנָ֛הּ (and her crowd) וּשְׁאוֹנָ֖הּ (and her roar) וְעָלֵ֥ז (and the one exulting) בָּֽהּ׃ (in her).
15 וַיִּשַּׁ֥ח (And is bent down) אָדָ֖ם (mankind), וַיִּשְׁפַּל־ (and is brought low) אִ֑ישׁ (each man),
וְעֵינֵ֥י (and the eyes) גְבֹהִ֖ים (of the haughty) תִּשְׁפַּֽלְנָה׃ (will be brought down).
16 וַיִּגְבַּ֛ה (And will be exalted) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט (in justive),
וְהָאֵל֙ (and God) הַקָּד֔וֹשׁ (and the Holy) נִקְדָּ֖שׁ (will show Himself holy) בִּצְדָקָֽה׃ (in righteousness).
17 וְרָע֥וּ (And will graze) כְבָשִׂ֖ים (the lambs) כְּדָבְרָ֑ם (as in their pasture),
וְחָרְב֥וֹת (and in the waste places) מֵחִ֖ים (of the fat ones) גָּרִ֥ים (sojourners) יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ (will eat).
18 ה֛וֹי (Woe to) מֹשְׁכֵ֥י (those drawing out) הֶֽעָוֺ֖ן (iniquity) בְּחַבְלֵ֣י (with cords) הַשָּׁ֑וְא (of falsehood),
וְכַעֲב֥וֹת (and with a rope) הָעֲגָלָ֖ה (of the cart) חַטָּאָֽה׃ (sin),
19 הָאֹמְרִ֗ים (saying), יְמַהֵ֧ר׀ (Let Him hurry) יָחִ֛ישָׁה (let Him hurry) מַעֲשֵׂ֖הוּ (His work),
לְמַ֣עַן (that) נִרְאֶ֑ה (we may see it)!
וְתִקְרַ֣ב (And let draw near) וְתָב֗וֹאָה (and come) עֲצַ֛ת (the counsel) קְד֥וֹשׁ (of the Holy One) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel),
וְנֵדָֽעָה׃ס (that we may know it)!
20 ה֣וֹי (Woe) הָאֹמְרִ֥ים (to those saying) לָרַ֛ע (to evil) ט֖וֹב (Good),
וְלַטּ֣וֹב (and to good) רָ֑ע (Evil),
שָׂמִ֨ים (putting) חֹ֤שֶׁךְ (darkness) לְאוֹר֙ (for light)
וְא֣וֹר (and light) לְחֹ֔שֶׁךְ (for darkness),
שָׂמִ֥ים (putting) מַ֛ר (bitter) לְמָת֖וֹק (for sweet)
וּמָת֥וֹק (and sweet) לְמָֽר׃ס (for bitter)!
21 ה֖וֹי (Woe) חֲכָמִ֣ים (to the wise ones) בְּעֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם (in their own eyes),
וְנֶ֥גֶד (and before) פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם (their own faces) נְבֹנִֽים׃ (discerning).
22 ה֕וֹי (Woe) גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים (to the mighty) לִשְׁתּ֣וֹת (at drinking) יָ֑יִן (wine)
וְאַנְשֵׁי־ (and men) חַ֖יִל (of strength) לִמְסֹ֥ךְ (in mixing) שֵׁכָֽר׃ (strong drink),
23 מַצְדִּיקֵ֥י (those declaring right) רָשָׁ֖ע (the wicked) עֵ֣קֶב (for) שֹׁ֑חַד (a bribe),
וְצִדְקַ֥ת (and justice) צַדִּיקִ֖ים (for the righteous ones) יָסִ֥ירוּ (they turn aside) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ס (from him).
24 לָכֵן֩ (Therefore) כֶּאֱכֹ֨ל (as devours) קַ֜שׁ (the stubble) לְשׁ֣וֹן (as the tongue) אֵ֗שׁ (of fire),
וַחֲשַׁ֤שׁ (and the chaff) לֶֽהָבָה֙ (the flame) יִרְפֶּ֔ה (consumes).
שָׁרְשָׁם֙ (Their root) כַּמָּ֣ק (as rottenness) יִֽהְיֶ֔ה (will be),
וּפִרְחָ֖ם (and their blossom) כָּאָבָ֣ק (like dust) יַעֲלֶ֑ה (will go up),
כִּ֣י (because) מָאֲס֗וּ (they have rejected) אֵ֚ת (-) תּוֹרַת֙ (the instruction) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) צְבָא֔וֹת (of Hosts)
וְאֵ֛ת (and), אִמְרַ֥ת (the Word) קְדֽוֹשׁ־ (of the Holy One) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) נִאֵֽצוּ׃ (they have despised).
25 עַל־ (Therefore) כֵּ֡ן (thus) חָרָה֩ (burns) אַף־ (the anger) יְהוָ֨ה (of YHWH)
בְּעַמּ֜וֹ (against His people), וַיֵּ֣ט (and He has stretched out) יָד֧וֹ (His hand) עָלָ֣יו (against them) וַיַּכֵּ֗הוּ (and struck them).
וַֽיִּרְגְּזוּ֙ (And trembled) הֶֽהָרִ֔ים (the hills),
וַתְּהִ֧י (and became) נִבְלָתָ֛ם (their carcasses) כַּסּוּחָ֖ה (like refuse) בְּקֶ֣רֶב (in the midst) חוּצ֑וֹת (of the streets).
בְּכָל־ (In all) זֹאת֙ (this) לֹא־ (not) שָׁ֣ב (is turned away) אַפּ֔וֹ (His anger),
וְע֖וֹד (and still) יָד֥וֹ (His hand) נְטוּיָֽה׃ (is stretched out).
26 וְנָֽשָׂא־ (And He will lift up) נֵ֤ס (a signal) לַגּוֹיִם֙ (for the nations) מֵרָח֔וֹק (from afar),
וְשָׁ֥רַק (and He will whistle) ל֖וֹ (to them) מִקְצֵ֣ה (from the end) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth).
וְהִנֵּ֥ה (And behold) מְהֵרָ֖ה (with haste) קַ֥ל (swiftly) יָבֽוֹא׃ (it will come).
27 אֵין־ (No one) עָיֵ֤ף (will be weary) וְאֵין־ (and not) כּוֹשֵׁל֙ (stumbling) בּ֔וֹ (among them);
לֹ֥א (not) יָנ֖וּם (will he slumber) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִישָׁ֑ן (sleep),
וְלֹ֤א (and not) נִפְתַּח֙ (will be loosed) אֵז֣וֹר (the girdle) חֲלָצָ֔יו (of his loins),
וְלֹ֥א (and not) נִתַּ֖ק (be broken) שְׂר֥וֹךְ (the strap) נְעָלָֽיו׃ (of his sandals)—
28 אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whose) חִצָּיו֙ (arrows) שְׁנוּנִ֔ים (are sharp),
וְכָל־ (and all) קַשְּׁתֹתָ֖יו (his bows) דְּרֻכ֑וֹת (bent);
פַּרְס֤וֹת (the hooves) סוּסָיו֙ (of his horses) כַּצַּ֣ר (like flint) נֶחְשָׁ֔בוּ (are reckoned)
וְגַלְגִּלָּ֖יו (and his wheels) כַּסּוּפָֽה׃ (like a whirlwind).
29 שְׁאָגָ֥ה (The roaring) ל֖וֹ (of him) כַּלָּבִ֑יא (is like a lion);
וְשָׁאַג (he roars) כַּכְּפִירִ֤ים (like the young lions).
וְיִנְהֹם֙ (And growls) וְיֹאחֵ֣ז (and seizes) טֶ֔רֶף (prey) וְיַפְלִ֖יט (and carries it away safely),
וְאֵ֥ין (and there is no one) מַצִּֽיל׃ (delivering).
30 וְיִנְהֹ֥ם (And he will roar) עָלָ֛יו (over it) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַה֖וּא (that)
כְּנַהֲמַת־ (like the roaring) יָ֑ם (of the sea).
וְנִבַּ֤ט (And one looks) לָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (over the land),
וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold), חֹ֔שֶׁךְ (darkness) צַ֣ר (and distress),
וָא֔וֹר (and the light) חָשַׁ֖ךְ (is darkened) בַּעֲרִיפֶֽיהָ׃פ (by its clouds).
