Berean Study Bible The Vision of Joshua the High PriestZechariah receives another vision concerning the spiritual condition of Jerusalem’s restored community and God’s purpose for its leaders. Rev 22:1 Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, … Joshua the high priest Joshua, also called Jeshua, served as high priest after the return from Babylon. As Israel’s representative before God, he stood for the priesthood and the nation in its need for cleansing and restoration. Zec 6:11-13 Take silver and gold, make an ornate crown… standing before the angel of the LORD, Joshua appears in a heavenly court before the Angel of the LORD, who exercises divine authority and acts on behalf of God. Exo 3:2-6 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him…… with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. Satan, whose name means “adversary” or “accuser,” appears as the adversary, seeking grounds to condemn Joshua. His accusation reflects Israel’s guilt and the opposition against God’s work of restoring His people. Job 1:6-12 One day the sons of God came to present themselves… And the LORD said to Satan: The LORD presides over the heavenly scene and addresses Satan, who stands as Joshua’s accuser. Satan’s opposition is real, yet he acts under God’s sovereign authority and cannot overturn God’s purposes. Job 1:6-12 One day the sons of God came to present themselves… “The LORD rebukes you, Satan! God rejects Satan’s charge against Joshua. The defense rests not on Joshua’s innocence but on God’s authority, mercy, and covenant purpose. Jud 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed… Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Jerusalem remained God’s chosen city despite its recent devastation and the sins that had brought judgment upon Judah. Joshua represented the restored priesthood and the returning people, whose future depended on God’s faithfulness rather than their merit. 2Ch 6:6 But now I have chosen Jerusalem for My Name to be there,… Is not this man a firebrand snatched from the fire?” Joshua and the nation had narrowly escaped complete destruction through the Babylonian exile. Like a burning stick pulled from a fire, they bore the marks of judgment but had been preserved for restoration, purification, and renewed service before the LORD. Amo 4:11 Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,… Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments Joshua’s soiled clothing portrayed Israel’s guilt and uncleanness after the exile. Though he served as high priest, he stood before God bearing the defilement of the people he represented, revealing their need for forgiveness and restoration. Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,… as he stood before the angel. Joshua stood in a place of judgment before the Angel of the Lord, who possessed divine authority to condemn or to cleanse. The vision shows that Israel’s restoration depended on God’s mercy rather than its own righteousness. Act 27:23 For just last night an angel of the God to whom I belong… So the angel said to those standing before him, The Angel of the LORD presides over the heavenly court as Joshua stands accused. Those before Him are ministering beings who carry out His command. The scene shows that Joshua’s cleansing comes by divine authority, not by his own defense or merit. Dan 7:10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from His presence.… “Take off his filthy clothes!” Joshua’s defiled garments portray the guilt of the high priest and, through him, the uncleanness of the returned exiles. A priest could not properly serve before God in such a condition. The removal of the garments signals the end of his defilement and accusation. Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,… Then he said to Joshua, Joshua receives the declaration personally, yet he stands as Israel’s representative. God addresses the priest He has chosen to restore for service in the rebuilt community. His name means “The LORD saves.” Hag 2:4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD.… “See, I have removed your iniquity, God Himself removes Joshua’s guilt. The cleansing is complete because it rests on God’s mercy and authority, silencing Satan’s charge against him. Isa 6:7 And with it he touched my mouth and said:… and I will clothe you with splendid robes.” Clean garments replace the filthy ones, marking Joshua’s restoration to honor and priestly service. He is no longer treated according to his former defilement but is received as cleansed before the LORD. Isa 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult… Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” Zechariah participates in the vision as Joshua’s restoration is completed. The clean turban belongs to the high priest’s sacred attire and marks Joshua as purified and again fit to serve before the LORD. After the removal of his filthy garments, the turban visibly confirms that his iniquity has been taken away and that the priesthood is being restored for the returned exiles. Lev 8:9 Moses also put the turban on Aaron’s head… So a clean turban was placed on his head, The command is carried out without delay, demonstrating God’s authority over Joshua’s cleansing and reinstatement. Joshua does not restore himself; he receives forgiveness and renewed standing by God’s grace. His restored office also points beyond Israel’s earthly priesthood to the perfect holiness of Christ, the final High Priest. Exo 29:6 Put the turban on his head and attach the holy diadem… and they clothed him, Clean garments complete the picture of restoration. Joshua, formerly clothed in garments representing guilt and defilement, is now publicly identified with purity and righteousness. The change confirms that God has removed the guilt standing against him and has restored him to his priestly service. Exo 29:5 Take the garments and clothe Aaron with the tunic… as the angel of the LORD stood by. The angel of the LORD oversees the proceedings and confirms God’s approval of Joshua’s restoration. His presence assures the priest and the people that their return to worship and covenant service rests on God’s mercy and authority. Num 22:31 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw… Then the angel of the LORD The Angel of the LORD speaks with divine authority and is understood as a preincarnate appearance of Christ. Having removed Joshua’s defilement, He now confirms Joshua’s restoration and prepares him for renewed priestly service. Gen 16:7 Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water… gave this charge The command is solemn and binding. Joshua’s continued service depends on faithful obedience to God’s ways and responsibilities. Deu 31:23 Then the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun… to Joshua: As Israel’s high priest after the exile, Joshua represents the restored worship and spiritual leadership of the nation. His cleansing and recommissioning point to God’s mercy toward His people and anticipate Christ’s perfect priestly ministry. Num 27:18-23 And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun,… “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: The LORD of Hosts rules over every power in heaven and earth and speaks with absolute authority. He alone directs the course of nations and preserves His covenant purposes. Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:… ‘If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, Joshua’s continued service depended on faithful obedience to God’s commands. As high priest, he was responsible to lead the restored community in holy worship and uphold the standards God had given Israel. Deu 10:12-13 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you… then you will govern My house God promised Joshua authority over the rebuilt temple and its worship. The priesthood, disgraced by past sin and interrupted by exile, would be restored under God’s direction. Num 12:7 But this is not so with My servant Moses;… and will also have charge of My courts; Joshua would oversee the temple courts, guarding the order, purity, and proper conduct of those who came to worship. Ezk 44:16 They alone shall enter My sanctuary and draw near… and I will give you a place among these who are standing here. Joshua would receive access and honor in God’s presence among the angels attending the heavenly court. His restored standing before God anticipated the complete access secured by Christ, the true High Priest. 1Ki 22:19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:… Hear now, O high priest Joshua, Joshua led Israel’s restored priesthood after the exile and served in the rebuilding of the temple worship in Jerusalem. As high priest, he represented the people before God and bore special responsibility for their renewed covenant life. Hag 1:1 In the second year of the reign of Darius… you and your companions seated before you, The priests gathered with Joshua shared in restoring proper worship and instruction among the returned exiles. Their united service showed that Israel’s restoration involved both civil rebuilding and spiritual renewal. Ezk 8:1 In the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month,… who are indeed a sign. Joshua and the priests pointed beyond their own generation to God’s coming work of redemption. Their restored ministry anticipated a greater priesthood and a fuller cleansing for God’s people. Isa 8:18 Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me… For behold, I am going to bring My servant, the Branch. God promised the arrival of the Messiah, the righteous King descended from David. Jesus Christ fulfills this promise as God’s Servant and the true Branch, bringing salvation and establishing His everlasting kingdom. Zec 6:12 And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts… See the stone I have set before Joshua; Set before the high priest, the stone marks God’s appointed work of restoring Israel after the exile. It points beyond the rebuilt temple to the Messiah, the chosen cornerstone upon whom God’s saving purpose rests. Isa 28:16 So this is what the Lord GOD says: “See, I lay a stone… on that one stone are seven eyes. The seven eyes portray the fullness of the Lord’s watchful care and perfect knowledge. Nothing in the restoration of His people or the accomplishment of His purposes escapes His sight. Rev 5:6 Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain,… Behold, I will engrave on it an inscription, The Lord Himself marks the stone for its sacred purpose, showing that the coming redemption is His work and rests on His covenant faithfulness. Exo 28:36 You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it… declares the LORD of Hosts, The God who rules heaven’s armies guarantees what He has promised. Israel’s future does not depend merely on Joshua, Zerubbabel, or the returned exiles, but on the authority and power of the Lord. Hag 2:4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD.… and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. God promises a decisive cleansing from sin. The sacrifice of Christ fulfilled this promise by providing atonement once for all, securing forgiveness for those who trust in Him. Lev 16:30 because on this day atonement will be made… On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, God points ahead to the time when He will complete His cleansing and restoration of His people. The Lord of Hosts guarantees this future by His sovereign authority over all earthly and heavenly powers. Zec 12:3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth… you will each invite your neighbor Cleansed from sin and freed from fear, the people will live in restored fellowship. Hospitality will replace insecurity and division. Lev 19:18 Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your… to sit under your own vine and fig tree.’” Each household will enjoy peace, provision, and safety in its own land. The picture recalls Israel’s prosperity under Solomon and anticipates the secure kingdom the Messiah will establish. 1Ki 4:25 Throughout the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel dwelt… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
