Psalms 52
Berean Study Bible

Why Do You Boast of Evil?

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for congregational worship under the direction of Israel’s worship leader, joining David’s personal crisis to the public praise of God.

Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…

A Maskil of David.

David wrote this instructive psalm while suffering injustice at the hands of Saul and Doeg, contrasting deceitful power with trust in God’s righteous judgment.

Psa 54:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David.…
Psa 55:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 142:1 A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A prayer.…

After Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the house of Ahimelech.”

Doeg reported David’s visit to Ahimelech at Nob, giving Saul grounds to order the slaughter of the priests and the destruction of their city. His betrayal exposed Saul’s cruelty and Doeg’s willingness to advance himself through evil.

1Sa 22:9-10 But Doeg the Edomite, who had stationed himself…
1Sa 21:7 Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day,…
1Sa 22:18-19 So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down…

Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?

David confronts Doeg’s pride. Though Doeg held influence in Saul’s court and carried out Saul’s command, his apparent strength was corrupt and temporary before God.

Psa 10:3 For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart;…
Psa 94:4 They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast.
Jer 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man…

The loving devotion of God endures all day long.

Doeg’s violence did not overturn God’s covenant faithfulness. God remained present with David and would judge those who used deceit and power against the innocent.

Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures…
Psa 136:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good.…
1Ch 16:34 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;…

Your tongue devises destruction

Doeg’s report to Saul about David and the priests at Nob was calculated to turn the king against Ahimelech. His words helped bring about the slaughter of the priests and the destruction of their city, showing how deliberate speech can serve violence and injustice.

Pro 6:14 With deceit in his heart he devises evil;…
Jas 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness…
Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence…

like a sharpened razor,

His speech was cutting, precise, and deadly in its effect. Like a razor in the hands of one who intends harm, his words were used to wound others and advance his own position before Saul.

Psa 64:3 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts…
Psa 59:7 See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words…

O worker of deceit.

Doeg did not merely relay facts; he presented matters in a way that fed Saul’s suspicion and rage. His conduct exposed a settled pattern of treachery, using truth selectively and deceitfully to bring ruin upon the innocent.

Pro 26:24-26 A hateful man disguises himself with his speech…
Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…
Jer 9:5 Each one betrays his friend; no one tells the truth.…

You love evil more than good,

David confronts Doeg’s deliberate delight in wickedness. Rather than fearing God or protecting the innocent, Doeg used his position before Saul to advance himself, contributing to the death of the priests at Nob. His conduct revealed a settled preference for what opposed God’s righteousness.

Mic 3:2 You hate good and love evil. You tear the skin…
Jhn 3:19 And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world……
Isa 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…

falsehood more than speaking truth.

Doeg’s report to Saul about Ahimelech was shaped to inflame Saul’s suspicions against David. Though Ahimelech had acted without knowledge of any conflict between Saul and David, Doeg’s words helped produce a massacre. God’s judgment falls on those who use deceit to harm others.

Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…
Eph 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood…
Pro 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD…

Selah

The pause calls attention to the seriousness of loving evil and falsehood, especially when such sins are used against God’s servants.

Psa 46:11 The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob…
Psa 24:10 Who is He, this King of Glory? The LORD of Hosts…
Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…

You love every word that devours,

David condemns speech used to ruin others. The psalm arises from Doeg’s betrayal of Ahimelech and the priests at Nob, when his report to Saul led to their slaughter. Such words do not merely communicate information; they become weapons in the hands of those who seek another’s destruction.

Psa 64:3-4 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Jas 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness…
Pro 26:28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes…

O deceitful tongue.

Doeg’s tongue served ambition rather than truth and justice. His treachery brought death to innocent people and exposed the corruption of a heart that trusted in power and evil rather than God.

Psa 120:2-4 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips…
Pro 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD…
Pro 21:6 Making a fortune by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist,…

Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin;

God’s judgment against the wicked is certain, complete, and final. In the setting of David’s conflict with Doeg, the warning falls on one who used deceit and violence to gain favor and destroy the innocent.

Oba 1:4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest…
Isa 14:15 But you will be brought down to Sheol,…
Rev 18:21 Then a mighty angel picked up a stone…

He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent;

No earthly position, household, or security can shield the evildoer from God’s hand. The one who trusted in power and wealth will be removed suddenly from all he had built.

Job 18:14 He is torn from the shelter of his tent…
Isa 22:18 roll you into a ball, and sling you into a wide land.…
Job 8:22 Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent…

He will uproot you from the land of the living.

Like a plant torn from the ground, the wicked will be cut off from life and from the community of those who belong to God. His judgment reaches beyond temporary loss to lasting ruin.

Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away,…
Jer 11:19 For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter;…
Pro 2:22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,…

Selah

The pause calls for sober reflection on the certainty of God’s justice.

Psa 46:10 Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted…
Psa 4:4 Be angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart…

The righteous will see and fear;

God’s judgment on the wicked will be visible and unmistakable. Those who trust Him will recognize His holiness, justice, and authority, responding with reverent fear rather than confidence in human power.

Psa 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.…
Exo 14:31 When Israel saw the great power that the LORD had exercised…
Deu 13:11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid,…

they will mock the evildoer, saying,

The downfall of the wicked exposes the emptiness of pride, wealth, and self-reliance. Their disgrace publicly confirms that no person can defy God with impunity.

Job 22:19 The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent mock them:
2Ki 19:21 this is the word that the LORD has spoken against him:…
Isa 37:22 this is the word that the LORD has spoken against him:…

“Look at the man who did not make God his refuge,

David’s words fit Doeg the Edomite, who gained favor in Saul’s court and betrayed Ahimelech for helping David. He sought security in power and royal approval rather than in the Lord.

Jer 17:5 This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the man who trusts…
Psa 118:8-9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD…
Psa 91:2 I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress…

but trusted in the abundance of his wealth

His position and possessions gave him influence, but neither could protect him from God’s judgment. Wealth becomes a false refuge when it is treated as the source of safety and lasting security.

Psa 49:6-7 They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.…
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…
1Ti 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…

and strengthened himself by destruction.”

Doeg advanced himself through accusation, violence, and the slaughter of the priests at Nob. What appeared to be strength was wickedness that would end in ruin.

Hab 2:9-12 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…
Ezk 22:27 Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey…
Mic 3:10 who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with iniquity.

But I am like an olive tree

In contrast to the violent and deceitful man described earlier, the psalmist stands secure and fruitful. The olive tree, prized for its long life and abundant oil, pictures enduring strength and usefulness under God’s care.

Jer 11:16 The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree…
Hos 14:6 His shoots will sprout, and his splendor…
Psa 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,…

flourishing in the house of God;

Like a well-watered tree planted near the sanctuary, he enjoys life and stability in the presence of the Lord. His security rests not in wealth, power, or human schemes, but in belonging to God.

Psa 92:12-13 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree…
Psa 84:4 How blessed are those who dwell in Your house!…
Psa 26:8 O LORD, I love the house where You dwell…

I trust in the loving devotion of God

God’s covenant faithfulness remains the foundation of his confidence, even when the wicked appear to prosper.

Psa 13:5 But I have trusted in Your loving devotion;…
Psa 21:7 For the king trusts in the LORD; through the loving devotion…
Psa 33:18 Surely the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him…

forever and ever.

The psalmist looks beyond present trouble to the unchanging mercy of God, which will not fail.

Psa 145:1-2 A Psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt You,…
Psa 10:16 The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish…
Psa 103:17 But from everlasting to everlasting the loving devotion…

I will praise You forever,

David’s praise rests on God’s righteous judgment and faithful preservation of His people. Though evil may appear powerful for a time, God’s purposes endure.

Psa 145:1-2 A Psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt You,…
Psa 86:12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart;…
Psa 30:12 that my heart may sing Your praises and not be silent.…

because You have done it.

The Lord had acted against the wickedness exposed in the psalm and had sustained David through danger and betrayal. Deliverance belonged to God, not to David’s strength.

Psa 40:5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done,…
Isa 25:1 O LORD, You are my God! I will praise Your name.…
Psa 118:23 This is from the LORD, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

I will wait on Your name—

David would continue to depend on the Lord’s character, promises, and timing rather than seeking security through human power.

Isa 26:8 Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path…
Psa 25:5 Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God…
Mic 7:7 But as for me, I will look to the LORD;…

for it is good—

God is faithful, righteous, and merciful in all His dealings, even when His judgment falls upon those who oppose Him.

Psa 118:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;…
Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures…
Nam 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress;…

in the presence of Your saints.

Praise was to be offered openly among God’s faithful people, who together witnessed His justice, protection, and covenant faithfulness.

Psa 149:1 Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD a new song—…
Jud 1:14 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them:…
Psa 145:10 All You have made will give You thanks, O LORD…
