Isaiah 61
Berean Study Bible

The Year of the LORD’s Favor

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me,

Isaiah presents the coming Messiah as uniquely empowered by God’s Spirit for His appointed work. Jesus applied these words to Himself in the synagogue at Nazareth, declaring that the prophecy was fulfilled in His ministry.

Luk 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me.…
Mat 12:18 Here is My Servant, whom I have chosen…

because the LORD has anointed Me

The Messiah is set apart by the Father for a holy mission. As God’s Anointed One, Jesus fulfills the offices of prophet, priest, and king.

Act 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit…
Act 4:27 In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate…

to preach good news to the poor.

The message brings God’s saving grace to the afflicted, needy, and spiritually destitute. Jesus announced the arrival of God’s kingdom and extended mercy to those often overlooked by society.

Luk 7:22 So He replied, “Go back and report to John…
Mat 11:5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk…

He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted,

The Messiah brings healing to those crushed by grief, sin, loss, and despair. His ministry restores those wounded by the consequences of a fallen world.

Psa 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psa 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite…

to proclaim liberty to the captives

God’s promised deliverance includes release from oppression, exile, and the bondage of sin. Jesus came to free those held under sin’s power.

Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
Jer 34:8 After King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people…

and freedom to the prisoners,

The Messiah breaks chains of guilt, condemnation, and spiritual bondage. His saving work provides true freedom for all who belong to Him.

Psa 146:7 He executes justice for the oppressed and gives food…
Isa 42:7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out…

to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor

God announces a season of grace, release, and restoration, recalling the Jubilee when debts were canceled, slaves freed, and inherited land returned. The promise reaches beyond Israel’s return from exile to the Messiah’s ministry of bringing salvation and spiritual liberty. Jesus applied these words to Himself in Nazareth, declaring the fulfillment of this gracious proclamation.

Luk 4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
Psa 102:13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,…

and the day of our God’s vengeance,

God’s favor does not cancel His judgment. He will judge those who persist in rebellion and vindicate His people against their enemies. The Messiah’s first coming inaugurated the offer of salvation; the final day of judgment remains certain, when God will set right every evil.

Isa 34:8 For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense…
Isa 63:4 For the day of vengeance was in My heart,…
2Th 1:8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…

to comfort all who mourn,

The promise includes Israelites grieving over Jerusalem’s ruin, exile, and loss. God would restore His people and replace their sorrow with hope. It also extends to all who mourn under sin, suffering, and death, finding lasting comfort in the salvation and future restoration God provides.

Mat 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Isa 40:1 “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…

to console the mourners in Zion—

God promises restoration to Jerusalem’s grieving people after devastation, exile, and loss. Zion, centered in Jerusalem, remains the place of His covenant purposes for Israel.

Isa 51:3 For the LORD will comfort Zion and will look with compassion…
Mat 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

to give them a crown of beauty for ashes,

Ashes, worn in mourning and repentance, give way to a crown marking renewed dignity and honor. God reverses the condition of those brought low by judgment and sorrow.

Zec 3:4-5 So the angel said to those standing before him…
Psa 113:7-8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy…

the oil of joy for mourning,

Anointing oil marks celebration, healing, and consecration. The Lord replaces prolonged grief with joy and restores His people to a renewed place of service before Him.

Psa 45:7 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;…
Psa 30:11-12 You turned my mourning into dancing; You peeled off…

and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair.

Mourning garments and inward heaviness are replaced by worship and thanksgiving. Their changed condition will openly testify to God’s mercy.

2Ch 20:21-22 Then Jehoshaphat consulted with the people…
Act 16:25-26 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying.…

So they will be called oaks of righteousness,

Those restored by God will become stable, enduring, and marked by righteousness rather than weakness or ruin.

Psa 92:12-14 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree…
Jer 17:7-8 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,…

the planting of the LORD,

Their renewal is God’s work. He establishes His people as a living testimony to His faithfulness and care.

Isa 60:21 Then all your people will be righteous;…
Jer 32:41 Yes, I will rejoice in doing them good…

that He may be glorified.

Israel’s restoration displays the Lord’s righteousness, power, and covenant faithfulness before the nations.

Jhn 15:8 This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit…
Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,…

They will rebuild the ancient ruins;

Those restored by the Lord will rebuild what Babylon’s invasion left in ruins, especially Jerusalem and the cities of Judah. The promise includes the return of a people whose worship, public life, and covenant identity had been severely disrupted.

Isa 58:12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins;…
Amo 9:14 I will restore My people Israel from captivity;…
Ezk 36:33-35 This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I cleanse you…

they will restore the places long devastated;

Lands and towns abandoned through war and exile will again be inhabited and cultivated. God’s restoration reverses the judgment that had brought desolation and reestablishes His people in the land He gave them.

Isa 49:8 This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor…
Jer 30:18 This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes……
Ezk 36:10-11 I will multiply the people upon you—the house of Israel…

they will renew the ruined cities,

The rebuilding includes more than walls and houses. Cities will regain ordered community life, worship, justice, and security under God’s blessing. What had displayed His judgment will become evidence of His faithfulness.

Isa 44:26-28 who confirms the message of His servant……
Neh 2:17-18 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in.…
Jer 33:10-11 This is what the LORD says: In this place you say…

the desolations of many generations.

The damage had extended across generations, but the Lord’s restoration reaches as deeply as the ruin. The return from exile began this work, while the full hope of lasting peace and renewal is fulfilled through the Messiah and awaits its complete realization in God’s coming kingdom.

Jer 31:38-40 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD,…
Amo 9:15 I will firmly plant them in their own land…
Ezk 36:36 Then the nations around you that remain will know…

Strangers will stand and feed your flocks,

Israel’s former oppressors will serve rather than rule her. After exile, the Lord promises restoration, security, and abundance, with the nations contributing to the welfare of His people.

Isa 60:10 Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings…
Isa 49:23 Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens…
Psa 72:11 May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.

and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers.

Agricultural labor portrays settled peace and renewed prosperity in the land. Israel will no longer be driven from her fields or forced to serve foreign powers, but will enjoy the blessings God has promised.

2Ch 2:17-18 Solomon numbered all the foreign men in the land of Israel…
1Ki 9:20-21 As for all the people who remained of the Amorites…

But you will be called the priests of the LORD;

In Israel’s future restoration, the nation will be set apart for devoted service to the Lord. What had been limited under the Mosaic Law to Aaron’s line will characterize Israel’s place among the nations as she represents the worship and knowledge of God.

Exo 19:6 And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests…
Rev 5:10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests…
1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…

they will speak of you as ministers of our God;

The nations will recognize Israel’s restored calling and honor her service to the Lord. Rather than bearing reproach and captivity, God’s people will be identified publicly with His worship and rule.

Jol 2:17 Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep…
Jer 33:21 Then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant…
Deu 10:8 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi…

you will feed on the wealth of nations,

The nations that once plundered Israel will contribute to her prosperity. God will reverse the losses of exile and oppression, providing abundance as Jerusalem and the land are restored.

Isa 60:16 You will drink the milk of nations and nurse…
Isa 60:5 Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will…
Isa 60:11 Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut…

and you will boast in their riches.

Israel’s rejoicing will rest in the Lord’s faithfulness, displayed through the honor and provision He grants her. The wealth of the nations will become evidence that God has kept His promises to His people.

Psa 49:6 They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.
Jer 9:23 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man…
Ezk 28:5 By your great skill in trading, you have increased…

Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion,

Israel’s exile brought public disgrace, loss, and the sense that the nation had been cast off. God promises not merely to remove that shame but to replace it with abundant restoration. The double portion pictures the honored inheritance normally given to the firstborn, showing that His people will again receive favor, security, and blessing.

Isa 54:4 Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;…
Job 42:10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored…
Zec 9:12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;…

and instead of humiliation, they will rejoice in their share;

The humiliation of conquest, captivity, and the destruction of Jerusalem will give way to joy. Their share is the inheritance God assigned to them, including their place in the land and their renewed standing as His covenant people.

Psa 30:11-12 You turned my mourning into dancing; You peeled off…
Lam 3:24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, …
Psa 126:2-3 Then our mouths were filled with laughter…

and so they will inherit a double portion in their land,

The promised restoration includes a real return to the land God gave Israel. What was lost through judgment will be restored in abundance, confirming God’s faithfulness to His promises and anticipating the full peace and prosperity of the Messiah’s kingdom.

Deu 21:17 Instead, he must acknowledge the firstborn, the son…
Jos 14:9 On that day Moses swore to me, saying…
Psa 37:29 The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.

and everlasting joy will be theirs.

The restoration God provides will not end in another season of sorrow. His people will possess enduring joy because their future rests on His righteousness, presence, and unchanging covenant faithfulness.

Isa 51:11 So the redeemed of the LORD will return…
Isa 35:10 So the redeemed of the LORD will return…
Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;…

For I, the LORD, love justice;

The Lord’s character is perfectly righteous, and He requires justice among His people, especially in their treatment of the vulnerable and oppressed.

Psa 37:28 For the LORD loves justice and will not forsake His saints……
Psa 33:5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice;…
Pro 21:3 To do righteousness and justice is more desirable…

I hate robbery and iniquity;

God condemns oppression, dishonest gain, and every form of wrongdoing. Israel’s leaders had often abused their authority and neglected the poor, actions that stood directly against the covenant.

Lev 19:13 You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him.…
Lev 6:2-4 If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD…
Ezk 22:29 The people of the land have practiced extortion…

in My faithfulness I will give them their recompense

The Lord will deal justly with His people, rewarding the faithful and judging evil. His response rests on His unchanging faithfulness to His promises.

1Sa 26:23 May the LORD repay every man for his righteousness…
Pro 24:12 If you say, “Behold, we did not know about this,”…
Psa 62:12 and loving devotion to You, O Lord.…

and make an everlasting covenant with them.

God promises a lasting relationship with His redeemed people, ultimately fulfilled through the New Covenant established by Christ, bringing forgiveness, restoration, and eternal fellowship with God.

Jer 32:40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them…
Ezk 37:26 And I will make a covenant of peace with them;…
Heb 13:20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood…

Their descendants will be known among the nations,

Isaiah looks ahead to Israel’s restoration after judgment and exile. Though often oppressed by surrounding powers, Israel would again be publicly identified as a people favored by God. The promise recalls God’s covenant with Abraham, whose descendants were to become a great nation and bring blessing to the earth.

Psa 87:4-6 “I will mention Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me”…
Isa 49:22-23 This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold,…

and their offspring among the peoples.

Future generations would share in the honor and blessing granted to the restored nation. Israel’s identity, family lines, and covenant inheritance would not be erased by exile or suffering but would continue before the nations.

Isa 44:3-5 For I will pour water on the thirsty land,…
Gen 22:18 And through your offspring all nations of the earth…

All who see them will acknowledge

The evidence of God’s work in Israel will be visible enough that all who observe them cannot deny it, bringing respect and honor. Their restored condition will bring public recognition rather than the shame and reproach associated with their former devastation.

Deu 28:10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see you are called…
1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…

that they are a people the LORD has blessed.

Israel’s prominence will come from the LORD’s covenant faithfulness, not from military strength or human achievement. His blessing includes restoration, security, fruitfulness, and honor, demonstrating that He has kept His promises to His people.

Psa 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,…
Num 6:24-26 ‘May the LORD bless you and keep you;…

I will rejoice greatly in the LORD,

The restored people of God respond to His promised deliverance with open joy.

Hab 3:18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice…
Psa 35:9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD…

my soul will exult in my God;

Their rejoicing rises from a personal covenant relationship with the Lord, who has remained faithful to His promises.

1Sa 2:1 At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD;…
Luk 1:46-47 Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,…

for He has clothed me with garments of salvation

God Himself provides salvation, removing the disgrace of sin and giving His people a new standing before Him.

Psa 132:16 I will clothe her priests with salvation,…
Zec 3:4 So the angel said to those standing before him…
Rev 7:14 “Sir,” I answered, “you know.” So he replied:…

and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness,

The righteousness they possess is God’s gift, marking them as accepted, honored, and set apart for Him.

Job 29:14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me;…
Rev 19:8 She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure.”…

as a bridegroom wears a priestly headdress,

The image joins celebration with holiness, portraying the redeemed as prepared to serve the Lord in joy.

Exo 28:4 These are the garments that they shall make:…
Exo 28:39 You are to weave the tunic with fine linen,…
Isa 62:5 For as a young man marries a young woman,…

as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Like a bride ready for her wedding, Zion is beautified and restored for her covenant union with God.

Jer 2:32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding sash…
Ezk 16:11-13 I adorned you with jewelry, and I put bracelets…
Rev 21:2 I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down…

For as the earth brings forth its growth,

God’s work is as certain and visible as the earth’s seasonal yield. The Creator who ordained life to rise from the ground also directs the renewal of His people.

Psa 67:6 The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
Gen 1:11-12 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation:…
Lev 26:4 I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit…

and as a garden enables seed to spring up,

A cultivated garden requires deliberate care, reflecting God’s purposeful restoration of Zion after her humiliation and exile. What He plants will not remain dormant or fruitless.

Mrk 4:26-28 Jesus also said, “The kingdom of God is like a man”…
Gen 2:8-9 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east…
1Co 3:6-7 I planted the seed and Apollos watered it,…

so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up

The Lord Himself will produce a people marked by obedience to Him and public thanksgiving for His salvation. Their righteousness will not arise from human strength but from His redeeming work and faithful care.

Isa 45:8 Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies…
Psa 85:11-13 Faithfulness sprouts from the earth…
Psa 96:1-3 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD…

before all the nations.

Jerusalem’s restoration will display God’s faithfulness before the world. The nations will see that the God of Israel fulfills His promises and brings salvation according to His purpose.

Psa 98:2-3 The LORD has proclaimed His salvation…
Isa 52:10 The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations…
Psa 67:2 Your ways may be known on earth, Your salvation…
