The Burden against Tyre

This is the burden against Tyre:

Tyre, the wealthy Phoenician port city, stood at the center of Mediterranean trade and maritime influence. Its prosperity, fortified island stronghold, and commercial reach gave it great prestige, yet it remained subject to God’s judgment.

Wail, O ships of Tarshish,

Merchant vessels traveling to distant western ports would mourn because Tyre’s fall disrupted trade throughout the Mediterranean. Those who depended on its markets, goods, and harbor would share in its loss.

Sidon was a leading Phoenician city closely connected with Tyre in commerce and seafaring. Its merchants had gained wealth through international trade, yet their prosperity could not shield them from the consequences of God’s judgment.

When the report reaches Egypt,

Egypt depended on Mediterranean trade and would have felt the loss of Tyre, a leading Phoenician center for commerce, shipping, and imported goods. News of Tyre’s downfall would quickly travel along the trade routes linking the coastal nations.

Tyre’s merchants and seafarers established trading posts and colonies in distant lands, extending its power far beyond its shores. Yet the city’s wide reach could not preserve it when its pride and security were brought low.

Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

Who planned this against Tyre,

Tyre’s coming ruin was not an accident of war or changing trade routes but the determined judgment of the Lord against a city exalted by wealth, security, and influence.

Ezk 26:3-5 therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, O Tyre,…

Rev 18:3 All the nations have drunk the wine of the passion…

The LORD of Hosts planned it,

Tyre’s coming downfall was determined by God, not merely by political change or military power. Though the city stood secure in its wealth, trade, and influence, it remained subject to the Lord’s rule over nations.

Isa 14:24-27 The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned,…

Tyre’s celebrated splendor would be brought low. Its prosperity and impressive reputation had fostered pride, and God would strip away the glory in which the city trusted.

Isa 28:1-4 Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards,…

The merchants, rulers, and wealthy leaders connected with Tyre would be humbled. Their honor and influence could not protect them when God’s judgment came.

Psa 107:40 He pours out contempt on the nobles…
Isa 2:11-12 The proud look of man will be humbled…

Cultivate your land like the Nile,

With Tyre’s trade disrupted, Tarshish would have to depend on the produce of its own land rather than the commerce that had enriched it. The Nile’s fertile floodplain pictures the labor and provision needed after maritime wealth failed.

there is no longer a harbor.

The loss of a secure port ended the trade routes and protection that sustained Tarshish’s prosperity. What had been a source of wealth became a reminder that the Lord rules over nations, cities, and their commerce.

Ezk 27:34-36 Now you are shattered by the seas in the depths…
Rev 18:17-19 For in a single hour such fabulous wealth has been destroyed…

The LORD has stretched out His hand over the sea;

God’s power reaches beyond Israel to the Mediterranean world and its commercial powers. The sea, often associated with turmoil and the nations, is fully subject to His command. Tyre’s wealth, ships, and alliances could not shield it from the judgment He had appointed.

Ezk 28:22 Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will be glorified…

Get up and cross over to Cyprus—

Flight to Cyprus, a nearby island with close commercial ties to Phoenicia, would appear to offer escape from the coming disaster.

Mic 2:10 Arise and depart, for this is not your place of rest,…
Num 24:24 Ships will come from the coasts of Cyprus;…

2Ch 36:19 Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God…

Jer 51:37 Babylon will become a heap of rubble, a haunt for jackals…
Rev 18:21 Then a mighty angel picked up a stone…

Wail, O ships of Tarshish,

Merchants and sailors from distant Tarshish mourn because Tyre’s fall disrupts the trade routes that had enriched nations across the Mediterranean. Tyre’s commercial influence extended far beyond its own shores, making its ruin a loss for every port dependent on its markets.

Psa 48:7 With a wind from the east You wrecked the ships of Tarshish.
Isa 2:16 against every ship of Tarshish,…
Ezk 27:25-26 The ships of Tarshish carried your merchandise.…

for your harbor has been destroyed!

Tyre’s harbors were the foundation of its wealth, naval strength, and international trade. Their destruction marks the collapse of the city’s power and fulfills God’s judgment against its pride, security, and dependence on material prosperity.

Ezk 27:34 Now you are shattered by the seas in the depths…
Ezk 26:4-5 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and demolish her towers.…
Ezk 26:12-14 They will plunder your wealth and pillage your merchandise.…

At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years—

Tyre’s commercial power would be brought low under God’s judgment, leaving its influence and prosperity greatly diminished. The seventy years marks a definite, complete period during which the city’s former prominence would fade.

Jer 25:11-12 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…

The judgment would last for a full human generation, reminding Tyre that its wealth, rulers, and trading power were temporary under God’s rule.

Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty…
Job 14:5 Since his days are determined and the number of his months…

But at the end of seventy years,

The appointed period would end, and Tyre would again emerge from its decline. Its restoration would not erase the reason for the judgment or place the city beyond God’s authority.

Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years…

it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:

Tyre would return to the trade and commerce that had made it wealthy, like a prostitute seeking former customers. The image exposes the city’s pursuit of profit and influence as morally corrupt despite its renewed prosperity.

Psa 98:4-5 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;…

Persistent singing reflects Tyre’s desire to restore its reputation and revive its former trade. After the appointed period of desolation, the city would again return to commercial activity.

The seventy-year period of Tyre’s humiliation would end at God’s appointed time, marking the completion of His judgment, as with Judah’s captivity.

2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…
Jer 25:11-12 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…

the LORD will restore Tyre.

Tyre would recover its commercial strength after Babylon’s domination, demonstrating that its rise and recovery depended on the Lord’s purpose rather than its own wealth or defenses.

Jer 30:18 This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes……
Amo 9:14 I will restore My people Israel from captivity;…
Jol 2:25 I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—…

Then she will return to hire as a prostitute

Tyre’s renewed prosperity would again center on trade, alliances, and the pursuit of profit. Her commerce is portrayed as prostitution because the city offered itself to foreign powers for gain.
