Berean Study Bible Athaliah and JoashAthaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, had come into Judah through her marriage to Jehoram. Ahaziah was killed during Jehu’s judgment on Ahab’s house, leaving Judah without an adult king from the royal family. Athaliah responded by seeking control of the kingdom. 2Ki 9:27-29 When King Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the road…… she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs. By destroying the descendants of David, Athaliah attempted to remove every rival to her rule and seize the throne for herself. Her actions brought the idolatry and violence associated with Ahab’s house into Judah. Yet Joash, a young son of Ahaziah, was hidden by Jehosheba and protected by the priest Jehoiada, preserving David’s royal line. 2Ch 22:10-12 When Athaliah saw that her son was dead,… But Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, Jehosheba was Ahaziah’s sister and a daughter of Judah’s royal house. As the wife of Jehoiada the priest, she had access to the temple and acted at great personal risk when Athaliah seized power. 2Ch 22:11 But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took Joash… took Joash son of Ahaziah Joash was Ahaziah’s infant son and a surviving heir of David’s dynasty. His life stood between Athaliah and uncontested control of Judah. Exo 2:2-3 and she conceived and gave birth to a son.… and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered. Athaliah ordered the destruction of the royal heirs after Ahaziah’s death, seeking to remove every rival to her rule. Joash was rescued before the massacre could reach him. 2Ch 22:10 When Athaliah saw that her son was dead,… She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah, Jehosheba concealed Joash with his nurse, who could provide the care required for such a young child. He was later kept hidden in the house of the Lord under Jehoiada’s protection. 1Sa 19:11-17 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house… and he was not killed. The preservation of Joash kept the line of David from being extinguished in Judah. Though Athaliah ruled for several years, her attempt to eliminate the royal house failed. Heb 11:23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months… And Joash remained hidden with his nurse Joash, also called Jehoash, was the young son of King Ahaziah. When Athaliah, his grandmother, seized power and ordered the royal heirs killed, Jehosheba rescued Joash and entrusted him to the care of his nurse. His preservation kept the line of David from being extinguished. 2Ch 22:11 But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took Joash… in the house of the LORD Jehosheba and her husband, Jehoiada the priest, concealed Joash within the temple precincts in Jerusalem. The house of the LORD became a place of safety while Athaliah ruled outside it, unaware that the rightful heir was alive. 2Ch 22:12 And Joash remained hidden with them in the house of God… for six years Joash remained hidden from infancy until he was seven years old. During that time, Jehoiada prepared the priests, Levites, and military leaders to restore the Davidic king to the throne. 2Ch 24:1 Joash was seven years old when he became king,… while Athaliah ruled the land. Athaliah ruled Judah after destroying the royal family as far as she knew. Her reign was marked by the influence of Baal worship and opposition to the worship of the LORD, yet her attempt to end David’s dynasty failed. 2Ch 22:10 When Athaliah saw that her son was dead,…
Joash Anointed King of JudahAfter six years of Athaliah’s unlawful rule, Jehoiada judged that the time had come to restore the Davidic heir to the throne. 2Ch 23:1 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself… Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, He enlisted trusted military officers and the royal guard forces, forming a carefully organized coalition capable of protecting the young prince and removing Athaliah. 1Ch 27:1 This is the list of the Israelites—the heads of families… and had them brought into the house of the LORD. The temple provided a secure setting for the plan and placed the coming action under the authority of the Lord. 1Sa 1:24-28 Once she had weaned him, Hannah took the boy with her… There he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. Jehoiada bound the officers to secrecy and loyalty in a solemn commitment to defend the rightful king and uphold God’s covenant with David’s house. Exo 24:7-8 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it… He showed them the king’s son Jehoiada revealed Joash, who had been hidden since infancy from Athaliah’s attempt to destroy the royal family. Seeing the living heir confirmed the legitimacy of the plan and gave the commanders a rightful king to serve. 2Ch 23:11 Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son… and commanded them, Jehoiada exercised decisive authority as he organized the overthrow of Athaliah and secured the life of Joash, the rightful heir to David’s throne. As high priest, he acted to preserve both the royal line and the covenant order of Judah. 2Ch 23:1-3 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself… “This is what you are to do: His instructions reveal a carefully coordinated plan. The guards were assigned specific positions so that the palace, the king, and the temple would be protected while the coronation took place. 2Ch 23:4 This is what you are to do: A third of you priests… A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath Jehoiada used the Sabbath смена of the guard to gather both the incoming and outgoing divisions. This provided enough men for the operation without immediately arousing suspicion in Jerusalem. 1Ch 9:25-27 Their relatives came from their villages at fixed times… shall guard the royal palace, One division was stationed at the palace to prevent Athaliah’s supporters from taking control of the seat of government. Securing the palace helped ensure that Joash’s restoration would not be quickly overturned. 2Ch 23:5-7 a third shall be at the royal palace, and a third… a third shall be at the gate of Sur, One division of Jehoiada’s force was stationed at a key entrance in the temple and royal precincts. By securing this access point, the priests and commanders limited any opportunity for Athaliah’s supporters to intervene during Joash’s coronation. 2Ch 23:5 a third shall be at the royal palace, and a third… and a third at the gate behind the guards. Another division covered a second entrance, providing protection from a different direction and preventing unauthorized access to the king. Jehoiada’s arrangements ensured that Joash remained surrounded by loyal men while the transfer of power took place. 2Ch 23:6 No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests… You are to take turns guarding the temple— The guards were to maintain an orderly watch so that the temple and the young king were protected without interruption. Their service preserved the rightful heir of David’s line until Joash could be publicly proclaimed king. 1Ch 9:22-27 The number of those chosen to be gatekeepers… the two divisions that would go off duty on the Sabbath The temple guard served in rotating divisions, with some beginning duty and others completing it on the Sabbath. Though the day was holy, the temple and the hidden heir required constant protection during Athaliah’s unlawful rule. 2Ch 23:8 So the Levites and all Judah did everything… are to guard the house of the LORD Jehoiada assigned these departing divisions to remain at the temple, where Joash had been concealed since Athaliah’s massacre of the royal family. The temple provided both sanctuary for the child and a secure setting for restoring the Davidic throne. 2Ch 23:6 No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests… for the king. Their duty was to protect Joash, the rightful king of Judah, until he could be publicly crowned. By preserving him, Jehoiada guarded the line God had promised would continue through David. 2Ch 23:7 The Levites must surround the king with weapons in hand… You must surround the king with weapons in hand, Jehoiada stationed armed guards around the young Joash during the carefully planned public coronation. Athaliah had seized Judah’s throne after destroying the royal heirs, making the preservation of Joash essential to the restoration of David’s line. Sng 3:7-8 Behold, it is Solomon’s carriage, escorted by sixty… and anyone who approaches the ranks must be put to death. Any attempt to break through the guard formation was to be treated as an attack on the king. The strict order protected the hidden heir from Athaliah’s supporters and prevented the coup from failing at its decisive moment. Num 1:51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites… You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.” The guards were to remain with Joash throughout the ceremony and escort him safely within the temple precincts. Their loyalty secured the rightful king until he could be publicly presented and established on Judah’s throne. 2Sa 15:18 and all his servants marched past him—… So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Jehoiada directed the preservation of the Davidic royal line, and the military officers carried out his instructions without resistance. Their obedience shows the trust and authority he held during Athaliah’s unlawful rule. 2Ch 23:8 So the Levites and all Judah did everything… Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty— Jehoiada used the Sabbath change of guard to assemble additional loyal soldiers without attracting attention. Men beginning and ending their service could be present at the temple, providing sufficient protection for Joash and support for the planned overthrow of Athaliah. 1Ch 9:25-27 Their relatives came from their villages at fixed times… and came to Jehoiada the priest. The officers gathered at the temple under Jehoiada’s leadership, joining the religious and royal restoration taking place there. Their arrival prepared the way for Joash to be revealed, anointed, and established as the rightful king from David’s line. 2Ch 23:9 Then Jehoiada the priest gave to the commanders… Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds Jehoiada armed the military officers who had joined his plan to restore the Davidic heir. Their participation provided the order and protection needed to bring young Joash before the people while preventing Athaliah from stopping the coronation. 2Ch 23:1 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself… the spears and shields of King David Kept from David’s reign, these weapons represented the royal house God had established in Jerusalem. Jehoiada placed them in the hands of men defending David’s descendant, publicly affirming that Joash—not Athaliah—was the rightful king. 2Ch 23:9 Then Jehoiada the priest gave to the commanders… from the house of the LORD. The temple provided both a secure setting for the covenant ceremony and the royal weapons preserved there. Jehoiada’s actions united the defense of the throne with the worship of the LORD, whose covenant had preserved David’s line through Joash. 1Ki 7:51 So all the work that King Solomon had performed…… And the guards stood with weapons in hand Jehoiada stationed the temple guard around Joash during the public coronation because Athaliah still controlled Jerusalem and posed an immediate threat to the seven-year-old heir. Their weapons showed that the transfer of power would be defended against any attempt to stop it. 2Ch 23:7 The Levites must surround the king with weapons in hand… surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, Joash was presented near the center of Israel’s worship, where the covenant God was honored and sacrifices were offered. His coronation in the temple identified him as the rightful Davidic king and marked the restoration of legitimate rule after Athaliah’s usurpation. 1Ki 8:22-23 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD,… from the south side to the north side of the temple. The guards formed a continuous line across the temple area, securing the king and controlling access to the ceremony. Their complete coverage prevented Athaliah’s supporters from reaching Joash and enabled Jehoiada to carry out the coronation openly. 2Ch 23:10 He stationed all the troops, with their weapons in hand,… Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, Jehoiada had safeguarded Joash in the temple for six years while Athaliah ruled Judah after destroying the royal family. Joash’s survival preserved David’s royal line and demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His covenant. 2Ch 23:11 Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son… put the crown on him, The crown publicly identified Joash as Judah’s rightful king and ended Athaliah’s unlawful rule. Though still a child, he stood as the legitimate heir to David’s throne. 2Sa 12:30 Then he took the crown from the head of their king.… presented him with the Testimony, Joash received the written law of God, reminding him that Israel’s king was accountable to the Lord and required to govern according to His commands. Deu 17:18-20 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write… and proclaimed him king. Jehoiada and the leaders formally announced Joash’s accession before the people, restoring the Davidic monarchy and lawful order in Judah. 1Ki 1:34-35 There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet… They anointed him, The anointing set Joash apart for his royal office under God’s authority and marked him as the Lord’s chosen king, foreshadowing Jesus Christ, the Messiah, “Anointed One.” 1Sa 10:1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s head… and the people clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!” The people rejoiced at the restoration of the rightful king, openly affirming their loyalty to Joash and their rejection of Athaliah’s rule. 1Ki 1:39-40 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle.…
The Death of AthaliahAthaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and widow of Jehoram of Judah, had seized the throne after the death of her son Ahaziah. Believing she had destroyed the royal heirs, she ruled through violence and promoted Baal worship. The sound came from the public coronation of Joash, the surviving son of Ahaziah, as the guards and people recognized him as Judah’s rightful Davidic king. 2Ch 23:12-13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running… she went out to the people in the house of the LORD. Athaliah entered the temple to confront the gathering, where Jehoiada the priest had arranged Joash’s coronation. Her presence in the temple stood in sharp contrast to her rejection of the worship of the LORD. There she would see that her usurpation had ended and that the Davidic line had been preserved. 2Ch 23:14-15 And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders… And she looked out and saw the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom. Joash stood in the customary place reserved for the king in the temple court during public ceremonies. His position beside the pillar identified him openly as the rightful Davidic heir and showed that his coronation was being carried out under the authority of the Lord’s house. 2Ki 23:3 So the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant… The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, The commanders who had protected Joash stood with him, while the trumpeters announced the royal accession. Their presence gave the event public order and demonstrated that the military and temple leaders recognized him as king. 2Ch 23:13 And she looked and saw the king standing by his pillar… and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. The people’s celebration showed broad support for Joash after Athaliah’s violent seizure of power. The sounding of trumpets marked the restoration of David’s royal line in Judah. 1Ki 1:39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle.… Then Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed, “Treason! Treason!” Athaliah recognized that her rule had ended. Her mourning and accusation exposed her desperation, though she had herself taken the throne by destroying the royal family. 2Ki 9:23 Joram turned around and fled, calling out to Ahaziah,… And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, Jehoiada directed the military officers who commanded units of a hundred men. Their support gave legal and practical strength to the effort to remove Athaliah and restore the Davidic heir, Joash, to the throne. 2Ch 23:1-3 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself… “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” Athaliah was to be escorted from the temple precincts under guard. Anyone attempting to defend her or incite resistance was to be stopped, preventing her supporters from turning the transition into a rebellion. 2Ch 23:14-15 And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders… For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.” Jehoiada would not allow Athaliah’s execution to defile the temple. Though her judgment was necessary, it was carried out away from the place set apart for the worship of the LORD. Deu 17:2-7 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns… So they seized Athaliah Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and widow of Judah’s King Jehoram, had ruled after murdering members of the royal family to secure the throne. Her arrest ended six years of violent usurpation and cleared the way for the preservation of David’s line through the newly revealed King Joash. 2Ki 25:6-7 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up… as she reached the horses’ entrance Removed from the temple precincts, she was taken toward an entrance associated with royal travel and the palace. She was not permitted to die near the house of the LORD, where Joash had been crowned and the covenant renewed. 2Ch 23:15 So they seized Athaliah as she reached the entrance… to the palace grounds, The palace area had been the center of Athaliah’s authority and of her efforts to establish Baal worship in Judah. Her removal there showed that her claim to rule had been decisively overturned. Est 1:5-6 At the end of this time, in the garden court… and there she was put to death. Athaliah was executed outside the temple according to Jehoiada’s command. Her death ended the threat against Joash and marked the restoration of the Davidic kingdom in Judah. 1Ki 21:23 And the LORD also speaks concerning Jezebel:…
Jehoiada Restores the Worship of the LORDWith Joash restored to the throne, Jehoiada led Judah in renewing its covenant commitment to the LORD. The kingdom had suffered under Athaliah’s idolatrous rule, and this public act reestablished the proper order: the king and the people were accountable to God and bound to worship Him alone. Joash’s reign would proceed under the authority of the LORD’s covenant. 2Ch 23:16 Then Jehoiada made a covenant with the king and the people… that they would be the LORD’s people. Judah reaffirmed its identity as God’s chosen covenant people. Their security and blessing depended not merely on a restored Davidic king, but on faithful obedience to the LORD. The covenant called the nation away from Baal worship and back to the worship prescribed by God. Deu 29:13 and so that He may establish you today as His people… He also made a covenant between the king and the people. Jehoiada established the responsibilities joining Joash and the people. The king was to rule as the LORD’s servant, upholding God’s law and leading the nation in righteousness; the people were to support the rightful king and live faithfully under his rule. This restored the covenant order that Athaliah had disrupted. 2Sa 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron… So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. With Athaliah removed and Joash established as king, the people rejected the Baal worship promoted during her family’s rule. Destroying its temple publicly ended its official place in Judah and affirmed renewed allegiance to the LORD. 2Ch 23:17 So all the people went to the temple of Baal… They smashed the altars and idols to pieces, The complete destruction of Baal’s worship objects removed the instruments of idolatry and prevented their restoration. The people acted together to cleanse Jerusalem of the corrupt religion that had drawn Judah away from God. 2Ch 34:7 He tore down the altars and Asherah poles,… and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. Mattan had served the false worship that harmed the nation and opposed the covenant faith of Judah. His death marked judgment on Baal’s priesthood and the end of its authority in Jerusalem. 2Ki 10:25 When he had finished making the burnt offering,… And Jehoiada the priest posted guards for the house of the LORD. Jehoiada secured the temple after the upheaval, protecting its worship and restoring proper order under the law. 2Ch 23:19 He stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the house… He took with him the commanders of hundreds, He took with him the commanders of hundreds, military officers whose support helped secure the transition of power and protect the young king. 2Ch 23:1 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself… the Carites, The Carites were likely royal guards or mercenary troops assigned to protect the king and the palace. 1Ki 1:44 And with Solomon, the king has sent Zadok the priest,… the guards, The palace officers were responsible for maintaining order and preventing any attempt to restore Athaliah’s rule. 2Sa 8:18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites… and all the people of the land, The public participation confirmed broad recognition of Joash as the rightful heir of David. 2Ch 33:25 But the people of the land killed all those who had… and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD After his anointing and covenant ceremony at the temple, Joash was escorted from the place of worship into the public exercise of kingship. 2Ch 23:20 And he took with him the commanders of hundreds… and entered the royal palace by way of the Gate of the Guards. The guarded entrance provided a secure and official route into the palace. 2Ki 15:35 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away;… Then Joash took his seat on the royal throne, Joash’s enthronement established him as king and preserved the Davidic dynasty despite Athaliah’s attempt to destroy it. 1Ki 1:46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. and all the people of the land rejoiced. Judah celebrated the restoration of the Davidic dynasty through young Joash after Athaliah’s violent usurpation and promotion of Baal worship. Her removal brought relief to a nation that had endured years of disorder and bloodshed. 2Ch 23:21 and all the people of the land rejoiced.… And the city was quiet, With the rightful king established, the immediate threat of rebellion and royal violence ended. Jerusalem, unsettled under Athaliah’s rule, returned to public order and stability. 2Ch 20:30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God… because Athaliah had been put to the sword at the royal palace. Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, had seized Judah’s throne after attempting to destroy the royal family. Her execution outside the temple precincts ended her illegitimate rule and removed the corrupting influence she had brought from the house of Ahab. 2Ch 23:15 So they seized Athaliah as she reached the entrance… Joash was seven years old Preserved for six years in the temple by Jehosheba and Jehoiada, Joash was the sole surviving heir of David’s royal line after Athaliah’s attempt to destroy it. His survival demonstrated God’s faithfulness to preserve the dynasty He had established through David. Because of his age, Jehoiada the priest guided the beginning of his reign and helped restore proper worship in Judah. 2Ch 24:1 Joash was seven years old when he became king,… when he became king. Joash’s coronation ended Athaliah’s unlawful rule and restored the Davidic monarchy. The people renewed their covenant with the Lord, recognizing that Judah’s king was to rule under God’s authority. Joash’s accession also preserved the line through which the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ, would come. 2Sa 5:4 David was thirty years old when he became king… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
