7 Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἀνεχώρησεν πρὸς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πολὺ πλῆθος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἠκολούθησεν καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰουδαίας Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.
8 καὶ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰδουμαίας καὶ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ περὶ Τύρον καὶ Σιδῶνα πλῆθος πολύ ἀκούοντες ὅσα ἐποίει* ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτόν and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.
9 Καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα πλοιάριον προσκαρτερῇ αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μὴ θλίβωσιν αὐτόν And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him.
10 πολλοὺς γὰρ ἐθεράπευσεν ὥστε ἐπιπίπτειν αὐτῷ ἵνα αὐτοῦ ἅψωνται ὅσοι εἶχον μάστιγας for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.
11 καὶ τὰ πνεύματα τὰ ἀκάθαρτα ὅταν αὐτὸν ἐθεώρουν προσέπιπτον αὐτῷ καὶ ἔκραζον λέγοντα ὅτι Σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”
12 καὶ πολλὰ ἐπετίμα αὐτοῖς ἵνα μὴ αὐτὸν φανερὸν ποιήσωσιν And he strictly ordered them not to make him known. But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.
13 Καὶ ἀναβαίνει εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ προσκαλεῖται οὓς ἤθελεν αὐτός καὶ ἀπῆλθον πρὸς αὐτόν And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.
14 καὶ ἐποίησεν δώδεκα [οὓς καὶ ἀποστόλους ὠνόμασεν] ἵνα ὦσιν μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἵνα ἀποστέλλῃ αὐτοὺς κηρύσσειν And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach
15 καὶ ἔχειν ἐξουσίαν ἐκβάλλειν τὰ δαιμόνια and have authority to cast out demons. and to have authority to drive out demons.
16 Καὶ ἐποίησεν τοὺς δώδεκα καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ὄνομα τῷ Σίμωνι Πέτρον He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),
17 καὶ Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ ἐπέθηκεν αὐτοῖς ὀνόματα* Βοανηργές ὅ ἐστιν Υἱοὶ Βροντῆς James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”),
18 καὶ Ἀνδρέαν καὶ Φίλιππον καὶ Βαρθολομαῖον καὶ Μαθθαῖον καὶ Θωμᾶν καὶ Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καὶ Θαδδαῖον καὶ Σίμωνα τὸν Καναναῖον Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot
19 καὶ Ἰούδαν Ἰσκαριώθ ὃς καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτόν and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
20 Καὶ ἔρχεται εἰς οἶκον καὶ συνέρχεται πάλιν ὁ ὄχλος ὥστε μὴ δύνασθαι αὐτοὺς μηδὲ ἄρτον φαγεῖν Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.
21 καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ παρ’ αὐτοῦ ἐξῆλθον κρατῆσαι αὐτόν ἔλεγον γὰρ ὅτι Ἐξέστη And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
22 Καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς οἱ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων καταβάντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Βεελζεβοὺλ ἔχει καὶ ὅτι Ἐν τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”
23 Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς ἐν παραβολαῖς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Πῶς δύναται Σατανᾶς Σατανᾶν ἐκβάλλειν And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?
24 καὶ ἐὰν βασιλεία ἐφ’ ἑαυτὴν μερισθῇ οὐ δύναται σταθῆναι ἡ βασιλεία ἐκείνη If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25 καὶ ἐὰν οἰκία ἐφ’ ἑαυτὴν μερισθῇ οὐ δυνήσεται ἡ οἰκία ἐκείνη σταθῆναι* And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26 καὶ εἰ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἀνέστη ἐφ’ ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἐμερίσθη οὐ δύναται στῆναι ἀλλὰ τέλος ἔχει And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.
27 ἀλλ’ οὐ δύναται οὐδεὶς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ εἰσελθὼν τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ διαρπάσαι ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον τὸν ἰσχυρὸν δήσῃ καὶ τότε τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ διαρπάσει But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.
28 Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πάντα ἀφεθήσεται τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν ἀνθρώπων τὰ ἁμαρτήματα καὶ αἱ βλασφημίαι ὅσα ἐὰν βλασφημήσωσιν “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,
29 ὃς δ’ ἂν βλασφημήσῃ εἰς τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον οὐκ ἔχει ἄφεσιν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀλλὰ ἔνοχός ἐστιν αἰωνίου ἁμαρτήματος but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”
30 Ὅτι ἔλεγον Πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον ἔχει for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”
31 Καὶ ἔρχονται ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔξω στήκοντες ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν καλοῦντες αὐτόν And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.
32 καὶ ἐκάθητο περὶ αὐτὸν ὄχλος καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ἰδοὺ ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαί σου ἔξω ζητοῦσίν σε And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”
33 Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτοῖς λέγει Τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί ‹μου› And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
34 καὶ περιβλεψάμενος τοὺς περὶ αὐτὸν κύκλῳ καθημένους λέγει Ἴδε ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!
35 ὃς ‹γὰρ› ἂν ποιήσῃ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ οὗτος ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἀδελφὴ καὶ μήτηρ ἐστίν For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.” Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
