Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching. | 1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, |
The chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people. | 2and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death; for they feared the people. |
And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. | 3Then Satan entered Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve. |
And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them. | 4And Judas went to discuss with the chief priests and temple officers how he might betray Jesus to them. |
They were glad and agreed to give him money. | 5They were delighted and agreed to give him money. |
So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd. | 6Judas consented, and began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them in the absence of a crowd. |
Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. | 7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. |
And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it." | 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare for us to eat the Passover.” |
They said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare it?" | 9“Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked. |
And He said to them, "When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. | 10He answered, “When you enter the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters, |
"And you shall say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"' | 11and say to the owner of that house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ |
"And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there." | 12And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.” |
And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. | 13So they went and found it just as Jesus had told them. And they prepared the Passover. |
When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. | 14When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His apostles. |
And He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; | 15And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering. |
for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." | 16For I tell you that I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” |
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves; | 17After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves. |
for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes." | 18For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” |
And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." | 19And He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” |
And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. | 20In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you. |
"But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. | 21Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table. |
"For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" | 22Indeed, the Son of Man will go as it has been determined, but woe to that man who betrays Him.” |
And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing. | 23Then they began to question among themselves which of them was going to do this. |
And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. | 24A dispute also arose among the disciples as to which of them would be considered the greatest. |
And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.' | 25So Jesus declared, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them call themselves benefactors. |
"But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. | 26But you shall not be like them. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. |
"For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. | 27For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as one who serves. |
"You are those who have stood by Me in My trials; | 28You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials. |
and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you | 29And I bestow on you a kingdom, just as My Father has bestowed one on Me, |
that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | 30so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; | 31Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. |
but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." | 32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” |
But he said to Him, "Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!" | 33“Lord,” said Peter, “I am ready to go with You even to prison and to death.” |
And He said, "I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me." | 34But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.” |
And He said to them, "When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?" They said, "No, nothing." | 35Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered. |
And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. | 36“Now, however,” He told them, “the one with a purse should take it, and likewise a bag; and the one without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. |
"For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment." | 37For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment.” |
They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." | 38So they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” He answered. |
And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. | 39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. |
When He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." | 40When He came to the place, He told them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.” |
And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, | 41And He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, where He knelt down and prayed, |
saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." | 42“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.” |
Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. | 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. |
And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. | 44And in His anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. |
When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, | 45When Jesus rose from prayer and returned to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. |
and said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation." | 46“Why are you sleeping?” He asked. “Get up and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.” |
While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. | 47While He was still speaking, a crowd arrived, led by the man called Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to kiss Him. |
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" | 48But Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” |
When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" | 49Those around Jesus saw what was about to happen and said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” |
And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. | 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. |
But Jesus answered and said, "Stop! No more of this." And He touched his ear and healed him. | 51But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him. |
Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? | 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers, and elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against an outlaw? |
"While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours." | 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this hour belongs to you and to the power of darkness.” |
Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance. | 54Then they seized Jesus, led Him away, and took Him into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed at a distance. |
After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. | 55When those present had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. |
And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, "This man was with Him too." | 56A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,” she said. |
But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him." | 57But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said. |
A little later, another saw him and said, "You are one of them too!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" | 58A short time later, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” |
After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, "Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too." | 59About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.” |
But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. | 60“Man, I do not know what you are talking about,” Peter replied. While he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. |
The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times." | 61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” |
And he went out and wept bitterly. | 62And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, | 63The men who were holding Jesus began to mock Him and beat Him. |
and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?" | 64They blindfolded Him and kept demanding, “Prophesy! Who hit You?” |
And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming. | 65And they said many other blasphemous things against Him. |
When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, | 66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, met together. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said, |
"If You are the Christ, tell us." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe; | 67“If You are the Christ, tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe. |
and if I ask a question, you will not answer. | 68And if I ask you a question, you will not answer. |
"But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD." | 69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” |
And they all said, "Are You the Son of God, then?" And He said to them, "Yes, I am." | 70So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” |
Then they said, "What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth." | 71“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared. “We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.” |
