A Lament for Pharaoh King of Egypt

1 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בִּשְׁתֵּ֣י (in the two) עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה (and tenth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year), בִּשְׁנֵי־ (in the two) עָשָׂ֥ר (and tenth) חֹ֖דֶשׁ (month), בְּאֶחָ֣ד (on the first) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), הָיָ֥ה (that came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

2 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), שָׂ֤א (take up) קִינָה֙ (a lamentation) עַל־ (for) פַּרְעֹ֣ה (Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) כְּפִ֥יר (A young lion) גּוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations), נִדְמֵ֑יתָ (you may be compared to) וְאַתָּה֙ (and you are) כַּתַּנִּ֣ים (like the monster) בַּיַּמִּ֔ים (in the seas); וַתָּ֣גַח (and you burst forth) בְּנַהֲרוֹתֶ֗יךָ (in your rivers), וַתִּדְלַח־ (and you stir up) מַ֙יִם֙ (the waters) בְּרַגְלֶ֔יךָ (with your feet), וַתִּרְפֹּ֖ס (and you muddy) נַהֲרוֹתָֽם׃ (their rivers).

3 כֹּ֤ה (Thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); וּפָרַשְׂתִּ֤י (And I will spread) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (over you) אֶת־ (-) רִשְׁתִּ֔י (My net) בִּקְהַ֖ל (with a throng) עַמִּ֣ים (of peoples); רַבִּ֑ים (many) וְהֶעֱל֖וּךָ (and they will draw you up) בְּחֶרְמִֽי׃ (in My net).

4 וּנְטַשְׁתִּ֣יךָ (And I will leave you) בָאָ֔רֶץ (on the land), עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field), אֲטִילֶ֑ךָ (I will throw you) וְהִשְׁכַּנְתִּ֤י (and I will make dwell) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (upon you) כָּל־ (all) ע֣וֹף (the birds) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וְהִשְׂבַּעְתִּ֥י (and I will give the fill) מִמְּךָ֖ (of you) חַיַּ֥ת (to the beasts) כָּל־ (of all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

5 וְנָתַתִּ֥י (And I will lay) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂרְךָ֖ (your flesh) עַל־ (upon) הֶֽהָרִ֑ים (the mountains), וּמִלֵּאתִ֥י (and I will fill up) הַגֵּאָי֖וֹת (the valleys) רָמוּתֶֽךָ׃ (with your remains).

6 וְהִשְׁקֵיתִ֨י (And I will water) אֶ֧רֶץ (the land) צָפָתְךָ֛ (with the flow), מִדָּמְךָ֖ (of your blood) אֶל־ (up to) הֶֽהָרִ֑ים (the mountains); וַאֲפִקִ֖ים (and the ravines) יִמָּלְא֥וּן (will be full) מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ (of you).

7 וְכִסֵּיתִ֤י (And I will cover) בְכַבּֽוֹתְךָ֙ (in My quenching of you), שָׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens), וְהִקְדַּרְתִּ֖י (and I will make dark) אֶת־ (-) כֹּֽכְבֵיהֶ֑ם (their stars) שֶׁ֚מֶשׁ (the sun) בֶּעָנָ֣ן (with a cloud), אֲכַסֶּ֔נּוּ (I will cover) וְיָרֵ֖חַ (and the moon) לֹא־ (not) יָאִ֥יר (will radiate) אוֹרֽוֹ׃ (her light).

8 כָּל־ (All) מְא֤וֹרֵי (luminaries) אוֹר֙ (of light) בַּשָּׁמַ֔יִם (in the heavens) אַקְדִּירֵ֖ם (I will make dark) עָלֶ֑יךָ (because of you) וְנָתַ֤תִּי (and I will put) חֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ (darkness) עַֽל־ (over) אַרְצְךָ֔ (your land), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

9 וְהִ֨כְעַסְתִּ֔י (And I will trouble) לֵ֖ב (the hearts) עַמִּ֣ים (of peoples), רַבִּ֑ים (many) בַּהֲבִיאִ֤י (in My bringing) שִׁבְרְךָ֙ (your destruction) בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם (among the nations), עַל־ (over) אֲרָצ֖וֹת (lands) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) לֹֽא־ (not) יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ (you have known).

10 וַהֲשִׁמּוֹתִ֨י (And I will cause to be appalled) עָלֶ֜יךָ (over you) עַמִּ֣ים (peoples) רַבִּ֗ים (many) וּמַלְכֵיהֶם֙ (and their kings) יִשְׂעֲר֤וּ (will shudder) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (over you) שַׂ֔עַר (with shuddering) בְּעוֹפְפִ֥י (in My making fly) חַרְבִּ֖י (My sword) עַל־ (in front) פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (of their faces) וְחָרְד֤וּ (and they will tremble) לִרְגָעִים֙ (at every moment), אִ֣ישׁ (each man) לְנַפְשׁ֔וֹ (for his soul), בְּי֖וֹם (on the day) מַפַּלְתֶּֽךָ׃ס (of your fall).

11 כִּ֛י (For) כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH) חֶ֥רֶב (The sword) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) תְּבוֹאֶֽךָ׃ (will come against you).

12 בְּחַרְב֤וֹת (By the swords) גִּבּוֹרִים֙ (of the mighty ones) אַפִּ֣יל (I will cause to fall), הֲמוֹנֶ֔ךָ (your multitude) עָרִיצֵ֥י (the most ruthless) גוֹיִ֖ם (of nations), כֻּלָּ֑ם (all of them) וְשָֽׁדְדוּ֙ (and they will plunder) אֶת־ (-) גְּא֣וֹן (the pride) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וְנִשְׁמַ֖ד (and will be destroyed) כָּל־ (all) הֲמוֹנָֽהּ׃ (her multitude).

13 וְהַֽאֲבַדְתִּי֙ (And I will destroy) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בְּהֶמְתָּ֔הּ (her animals) מֵעַ֖ל (from beside) מַ֣יִם (her waters); רַבִּ֑ים (great) וְלֹ֨א (and not) תִדְלָחֵ֤ם (will stir them up) רֶֽגֶל־ (the foot) אָדָם֙ (of man) ע֔וֹד (anymore), וּפַרְס֥וֹת (and the hooves) בְּהֵמָ֖ה (of animals) לֹ֥א (not) תִדְלָחֵֽם׃ (will stir them up).

14 אָ֚ז (Then) אַשְׁקִ֣יעַ (I will let settle) מֵֽימֵיהֶ֔ם (their waters) וְנַהֲרוֹתָ֖ם (and their rivers) כַּשֶּׁ֣מֶן (like oil), אוֹלִ֑יךְ (I will make run) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

15 בְּתִתִּי֩ (In My making) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֨רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֜יִם (of Egypt) שְׁמָמָ֣ה (a desolation), וּנְשַׁמָּ֗ה (and being desolate) אֶ֚רֶץ (the land) מִמְּלֹאָ֔הּ (of its fullness), בְּהַכּוֹתִ֖י (in My striking) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) י֣וֹשְׁבֵי (those dwelling) בָ֑הּ (in it) וְיָדְע֖וּ (and they will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

16 קִינָ֥ה (A lamentation) הִיא֙ (it is) וְק֣וֹנְנ֔וּהָ (they will lament her) בְּנ֥וֹת (the daughters) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations) תְּקוֹנֵ֣נָּה (will lament) אוֹתָ֑הּ (her) עַל־ (over) מִצְרַ֤יִם (Egypt), וְעַל־ (and over) כָּל־ (all) הֲמוֹנָהּ֙ (her multitude), תְּקוֹנֵ֣נָּה (they will lament) אוֹתָ֔הּ (her) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃פ (YHWH).

Egypt Cast into the Pit

17 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בִּשְׁתֵּ֣י (in the two) עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה (and tenth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year), בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (on the five) עָשָׂ֖ר (and tenth) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), הָיָ֥ה (that came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

18 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), נְהֵ֛ה (wail) עַל־ (over) הֲמ֥וֹן (the multitude) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), וְהוֹרִדֵ֑הוּ (and send it down), א֠וֹתָהּ (her) וּבְנ֨וֹת (and the daughters) גּוֹיִ֧ם (of the nations), אַדִּרִ֛ם (mighty) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land), תַּחְתִּיּ֖וֹת (below) אֶת־ (with) י֥וֹרְדֵי (those going down) בֽוֹר׃ (to the Pit).

19 מִמִּ֖י (Than whom) נָעָ֑מְתָּ (are you pleasing)? רְדָ֥ה (Go down), וְהָשְׁכְּבָ֖ה (and lie down) אֶת־ (with) עֲרֵלִֽים׃ (the uncircumcised).

20 בְּת֥וֹךְ (In the midst) חַלְלֵי־ (of those slain by) חֶ֖רֶב (by the sword). יִפֹּ֑לוּ (They will fall) חֶ֣רֶב (to the sword); נִתָּ֔נָה (she is given) מָשְׁכ֥וּ (let be dragged away) אוֹתָ֖הּ (her) וְכָל־ (and all) הֲמוֹנֶֽיהָ׃ (her multitudes).

21 יְדַבְּרוּ־ (Will speak) ל֞וֹ (concerning him) אֵלֵ֧י (the chiefs) גִבּוֹרִ֛ים (of the mighty ones) מִתּ֥וֹךְ (from the midst) שְׁא֖וֹל (of Sheol) אֶת־ (with) עֹֽזְרָ֑יו (his helpers) יָֽרְד֛וּ (They have gone down), שָׁכְב֥וּ (they have lain down) הָעֲרֵלִ֖ים (the with uncircumcised), חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חָֽרֶב׃ (the sword).

22 שָׁ֤ם (There is) אַשּׁוּר֙ (Assyria) וְכָל־ (and all) קְהָלָ֔הּ (her throng); סְבִֽיבוֹתָ֖יו (surrounding it) קִבְרֹתָ֑יו (with its graves) כֻּלָּ֣ם (all of them) חֲלָלִ֔ים (slain), הַנֹּפְלִ֖ים (having fallen) בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ (by the sword),

23 אֲשֶׁ֨ר (of whom) נִתְּנ֤וּ (are appointed) קִבְרֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ (her graves to be) בְּיַרְכְּתֵי־ (in the far sides) ב֔וֹר (of the Pit), וַיְהִ֣י (and is) קְהָלָ֔הּ (and her assembly) סְבִיב֖וֹת (all around) קְבֻרָתָ֑הּ (her grave). כֻּלָּ֤ם (All of them) חֲלָלִים֙ (slain), נֹפְלִ֣ים (having fallen) בַּחֶ֔רֶב (by the sword), אֲשֶׁר־ (those who) נָתְנ֥וּ (gave forth) חִתִּ֖ית (terror) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּֽים׃ (of the living).

24 שָׁ֤ם (There is) עֵילָם֙ (Elam) וְכָל־ (and all) הֲמוֹנָ֔הּ (her multitude) סְבִיב֖וֹת (surrounding) קְבֻרָתָ֑הּ (her grave), כֻּלָּ֣ם (all of them) חֲלָלִים֩ (slain), הַנֹּפְלִ֨ים (having fallen) בַּחֶ֜רֶב (by the sword), אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ (those who) יָרְד֥וּ (have gone down) עֲרֵלִ֣ים׀ (uncircumcised) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land), תַּחְתִּיּ֗וֹת (below) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (those who) נָתְנ֤וּ (gave forth) חִתִּיתָם֙ (their terror) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּ֔ים (of the living); וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (and they bear) כְלִמָּתָ֖ם (their shame) אֶת־ (with) י֥וֹרְדֵי (those going down) בֽוֹר׃ (to the Pit).

25 בְּת֣וֹךְ (In the midst) חֲ֠לָלִים (of the slain) נָתְנ֨וּ (they set) מִשְׁכָּ֥ב (a bed) לָהּ֙ (for her) בְּכָל־ (with all) הֲמוֹנָ֔הּ (her multitude). סְבִֽיבוֹתָ֖יו (All around it) קִבְרֹתֶ֑הָ (with her graves) כֻּלָּ֣ם (all of them) עֲרֵלִ֣ים (uncircumcised), חַלְלֵי־ (slain by) חֶ֡רֶב (the sword); כִּֽי־ (though) נִתַּ֨ן (was given forth) חִתִּיתָ֜ם (their terror) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּ֗ים (of the living), וַיִּשְׂא֤וּ (and they bear) כְלִמָּתָם֙ (their shame) אֶת־ (with) י֣וֹרְדֵי (those going down) ב֔וֹר (to the Pit); בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) חֲלָלִ֖ים (of the slain) נִתָּֽן׃ (they are placed).

26 שָׁ֣ם (There are) מֶ֤שֶׁךְ (Meshech), תֻּבַל֙ (and Tubal), וְכָל־ (and all) הֲמוֹנָ֔הּ (her multitude); סְבִֽיבוֹתָ֖יו (around it) קִבְרוֹתֶ֑יהָ (with her graves) כֻּלָּ֤ם (all of them) עֲרֵלִים֙ (uncircumcised), מְחֻ֣לְלֵי (slain by) חֶ֔רֶב (the sword), כִּֽי־ (though) נָתְנ֥וּ (they gave forth) חִתִּיתָ֖ם (their terror) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּֽים׃ (of the living).

27 וְלֹ֤א (And not) יִשְׁכְּבוּ֙ (do they lie down) אֶת־ (with) גִּבּוֹרִ֔ים (the mighty ones) נֹפְלִ֖ים (those having fallen) מֵעֲרֵלִ֑ים (from the uncircumcised), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יָרְדֽוּ־ (have gone down) שְׁא֣וֹל (to Sheol) בִּכְלֵֽי־ (with their weapons) מִלְחַמְתָּם֩ (of war); וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ (and they have laid) אֶת־ (-) חַרְבוֹתָ֜ם (their swords) תַּ֣חַת (under) רָאשֵׁיהֶ֗ם (their heads), וַתְּהִ֤י (and will be) עֲוֺֽנֹתָם֙ (their iniquities) עַל־ (upon) עַצְמוֹתָ֔ם (their bones), כִּֽי־ (for) חִתִּ֥ית (the terror) גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים (of the mighty ones) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּֽים׃ (of the living).

28 וְאַתָּ֗ה (And you) בְּת֧וֹךְ (in the midst) עֲרֵלִ֛ים (of the uncircumcised), תִּשָּׁבַ֥ר (you will be broken) וְתִשְׁכַּ֖ב (and you will lie) אֶת־ (with) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חָֽרֶב׃ (the sword).

29 שָׁ֣מָּה (There is) אֱד֗וֹם (Edom), מְלָכֶ֙יהָ֙ (her kings), וְכָל־ (and all) נְשִׂיאֶ֔יהָ (her princes), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) נִתְּנ֥וּ (were given) בִגְבוּרָתָ֖ם (in their strength) אֶת־ (among) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חָ֑רֶב (the sword); הֵ֛מָּה (they) אֶת־ (with) עֲרֵלִ֥ים (the uncircumcised), יִשְׁכָּ֖בוּ (will lie down) וְאֶת־ (and with) יֹ֥רְדֵי (those going down to) בֽוֹר׃ (the Pit).

30 שָׁ֣מָּה (There also are) נְסִיכֵ֥י (the princes) צָפ֛וֹן (of the north), כֻּלָּ֖ם (all of them) וְכָל־ (and every) צִֽדֹנִ֑י (Sidonian), אֲשֶׁר־ (those who) יָרְד֣וּ (have gone down) אֶת־ (with) חֲלָלִ֗ים (the slain); בְּחִתִּיתָ֤ם (with their terror) מִגְבֽוּרָתָם֙ (by their might); בּוֹשִׁ֔ים (ashamed) וַיִּשְׁכְּב֤וּ (and they lie) עֲרֵלִים֙ (uncircumcised) אֶת־ (with) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חֶ֔רֶב (the sword), וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (and they must bear) כְלִמָּתָ֖ם (their shame) אֶת־ (with) י֥וֹרְדֵי (those going down) בֽוֹר׃ (to the Pit).

31 אוֹתָם֙ (Them) יִרְאֶ֣ה (will see) פַרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) וְנִחַ֖ם (and he will be comforted) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) הֲמוֹנֹה (his multitude), חַלְלֵי־ (slain by) חֶ֙רֶב֙ (the sword), פַּרְעֹ֣ה (Pharaoh) וְכָל־ (and all) חֵיל֔וֹ (his force) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

32 כִּֽי־ (For) נָתַ֥תִּי (I give forth) אֶת־ (-) חִתִּיתוֹ (My terror) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּ֑ים (of the living), וְהֻשְׁכַּב֩ (and he will be made to lie down) בְּת֨וֹךְ (in the midst) עֲרֵלִ֜ים (of the uncircumcised) אֶת־ (with) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חֶ֗רֶב (the sword), פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) וְכָל־ (and all) הֲמוֹנֹ֔ה (his throng), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃פ (YHWH).
