Egypt Will Fall like Assyria

1 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) בְּאַחַ֤ת (in the one) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and tenth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year), בַּשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י (in the third month) בְּאֶחָ֣ד (on the first) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), הָיָ֥ה (that came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

2 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), אֱמֹ֛ר (say) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֥ה (Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), וְאֶל־ (and to) הֲמוֹנ֑וֹ (his multitude); אֶל־ (To) מִ֖י (whom) דָּמִ֥יתָ (do you compare) בְגָדְלֶֽךָ׃ (in your greatness)?

3 הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), אַשּׁ֜וּר (Assyria was) אֶ֣רֶז (a cedar) בַּלְּבָנ֗וֹן (in Lebanon) יְפֵ֥ה (beautiful) עָנָ֛ף (of branches), וְחֹ֥רֶשׁ (and to the forest), מֵצַ֖ל (giving shade) וּגְבַ֣הּ (and high) קוֹמָ֑ה (of stature); וּבֵ֣ין (and among) עֲבֹתִ֔ים (the clouds) הָיְתָ֖ה (was) צַמַּרְתּֽוֹ׃ (its top).

4 מַ֣יִם (The waters) גִּדְּל֔וּהוּ (made it grow), תְּה֖וֹם (the deep) רֹֽמְמָ֑תְהוּ (gave it height) אֶת־ (with) נַהֲרֹתֶ֗יהָ (her rivers) הֹלֵךְ֙ (running) סְבִיב֣וֹת (around) מַטָּעָ֔הּ (the place of her planting), וְאֶת־ (and) תְּעָלֹתֶ֣יהָ (her conduits) שִׁלְחָ֔ה (she sent out) אֶ֖ל (to) כָּל־ (all) עֲצֵ֥י (the trees) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field).

5 עַל־ (For) כֵּן֙ (this rason) גָּבְהָ֣א (was exalted) קֹמָת֔וֹ (its height) מִכֹּ֖ל (above all) עֲצֵ֣י (the trees) הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה (of the field), וַתִּרְבֶּ֨ינָה (and were multiplied), סַֽרְעַפֹּתָ֜יו (its boughs) וַתֶּאֱרַ֧כְנָה (and became long) פֹארָתוֹ (its branches) מִמַּ֥יִם (from the waters), רַבִּ֖ים (abundant) בְּשַׁלְּחֽוֹ׃ (in its sending forth).

6 בִּסְעַפֹּתָ֤יו (In its boughs), קִֽנְנוּ֙ (made their nests) כָּל־ (all) ע֣וֹף (the birds) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וְתַ֤חַת (and under) פֹּֽארֹתָיו֙ (its branches) יָֽלְד֔וּ (gave birth), כֹּ֖ל (all) חַיַּ֣ת (the beasts) הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה (of the field) וּבְצִלּוֹ֙ (and in its shade) יֵֽשְׁב֔וּ (dwelt) כֹּ֖ל (all) גּוֹיִ֥ם (nations) רַבִּֽים׃ (the great).

7 וַיְּיִ֣ף (And it was beautiful) בְּגָדְל֔וֹ (in its greatness), בְּאֹ֖רֶךְ (and in the length) דָּֽלִיּוֹתָ֑יו (of its branches); כִּֽי־ (because) הָיָ֥ה (was) שָׁרְשׁ֖וֹ (its root) אֶל־ (to) מַ֥יִם (waters) רַבִּֽים׃ (abundant).

8 אֲרָזִ֣ים (The cedars) לֹֽא־ (not) עֲמָמֻהוּ֮ (could darken it) בְּגַן־ (in the garden) אֱלֹהִים֒ (of God) בְּרוֹשִׁ֗ים (the fir trees) לֹ֤א (not) דָמוּ֙ (were like) אֶל־ (unto) סְעַפֹּתָ֔יו (its boughs), וְעַרְמֹנִ֥ים (and the plane trees) לֹֽא־ (not) הָי֖וּ (were) כְּפֹֽארֹתָ֑יו (like its branches); כָּל־ (there was no) עֵץ֙ (tree) בְּגַן־ (in the garden) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) לֹא־ (not any) דָמָ֥ה (like) אֵלָ֖יו (it) בְּיָפְיֽוֹ׃ (in its beauty).

9 יָפֶ֣ה (Beautiful) עֲשִׂיתִ֔יו (I made it) בְּרֹ֖ב (with an abundance) דָּֽלִיּוֹתָ֑יו (of branches), וַיְקַנְאֻ֙הוּ֙ (and envied) כָּל־ (all) עֲצֵי־ (the trees) עֵ֔דֶן (of Eden), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that were) בְּגַ֥ן (in the garden) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס (of God).

10 לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); יַ֕עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) גָּבַ֖הְתָּ (you became great) בְּקוֹמָ֑ה (in height), וַיִּתֵּ֤ן (and it set) צַמַּרְתּוֹ֙ (its top) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֣ין (among) עֲבוֹתִ֔ים (the thick boughs), וְרָ֥ם (and was lifted up) לְבָב֖וֹ (its heart) בְּגָבְהֽוֹ׃ (in its height);

11 וְאֶ֨תְּנֵ֔הוּ (so I will give it) בְּיַ֖ד (into the hand) אֵ֣יל (of the mighty one) גּוֹיִ֑ם (of the nations); עָשׂ֤וֹ (and doing) יַֽעֲשֶׂה֙ (will he do) ל֔וֹ (with it) כְּרִשְׁע֖וֹ (according to its wickedness) גֵּרַשְׁתִּֽהוּ׃ (I have driven it out).

12 וַיִּכְרְתֻ֧הוּ (And have cut it down), זָרִ֛ים (foreigners), עָרִיצֵ֥י (the most ruthless) גוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations), וַֽיִּטְּשֻׁ֑הוּ (and they have left it) אֶל־ (on) הֶ֠הָרִים (the mountains) וּבְכָל־ (and in all) גֵּ֨אָי֜וֹת (the valleys) נָפְל֣וּ (have fallen), דָלִיּוֹתָ֗יו (its branches) וַתִּשָּׁבַ֤רְנָה (and lie broken) פֹֽארֹתָיו֙ (its boughs) בְּכֹל֙ (by all) אֲפִיקֵ֣י (the rivers) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land); וַיֵּרְד֧וּ (and have gone out) מִצִּלּ֛וֹ (from its shade), כָּל־ (all) עַמֵּ֥י (the peoples) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the earth) וַֽיִּטְּשֻֽׁהוּ׃ (and they have left it).

13 עַל־ (On) מַפַּלְתּ֥וֹ (its carcass) יִשְׁכְּנ֖וּ (will dwell), כָּל־ (all) ע֣וֹף (the birds) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens) וְאֶל־ (and on) פֹּארֹתָ֣יו (its branches); הָי֔וּ (will be) כֹּ֖ל (all) חַיַּ֥ת (the beasts) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field).

14 לְמַ֡עַן (In order) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) לֹא־ (not) יִגְבְּה֨וּ (will exalt) בְקוֹמָתָ֜ם (in their height), כָּל־ (any) עֲצֵי־ (trees) מַ֗יִם (by the waters) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִתְּנ֤וּ (will they give) אֶת־ (-) צַמַּרְתָּם֙ (their tops) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֣ין (among) עֲבֹתִ֔ים (the thick boughs), וְלֹֽא־ (so that not) יַעַמְד֧וּ (reach) אֵלֵיהֶ֛ם (their oaks) בְּגָבְהָ֖ם (to their height), כָּל־ (all) שֹׁ֣תֵי (those drinking from) מָ֑יִם (the waters); כִּֽי־ (for) כֻלָּם֩ (they all) נִתְּנ֨וּ (have been given) לַמָּ֜וֶת (to death), אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land), תַּחְתִּ֗ית (far below) בְּת֛וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) אָדָ֖ם (of men), אֶל־ (with) י֥וֹרְדֵי (those going down) בֽוֹר׃ס (to the Pit).

15 כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) בְּי֨וֹם (On the day) רִדְתּ֤וֹ (of its going down) שְׁא֙וֹלָה֙ (to Sheol) הֶאֱבַ֜לְתִּי (I caused mourning); כִּסֵּ֤תִי (I covered) עָלָיו֙ (over it) אֶת־ (-) תְּה֔וֹם (the deep) וָֽאֶמְנַע֙ (and I held back) נַהֲרוֹתֶ֔יהָ (its rivers) וַיִּכָּלְא֖וּ (and were cut off); מַ֣יִם (the waters) רַבִּ֑ים (great) וָאַקְדִּ֤ר (and I caused to mourn) עָלָיו֙ (over it) לְבָנ֔וֹן (Lebanon) וְכָל־ (and all) עֲצֵ֥י (the trees) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field) עָלָ֥יו (because of it) עֻלְפֶּֽה׃ (fainted).

16 מִקּ֤וֹל (At the sound) מַפַּלְתּוֹ֙ (of its fall), הִרְעַ֣שְׁתִּי (I made quake) גוֹיִ֔ם (the nations) בְּהוֹרִדִ֥י (in My casting down) אֹת֛וֹ (it) שְׁא֖וֹלָה (to Sheol) אֶת־ (together with) י֣וֹרְדֵי (those going down) ב֑וֹר (to the Pit); וַיִּנָּ֨חֲמ֜וּ (and were comforted) בְּאֶ֤רֶץ (in the land). תַּחְתִּית֙ (Below) כָּל־ (all) עֲצֵי־ (the trees) עֵ֔דֶן (of Eden), מִבְחַ֥ר (the choicest) וְטוֹב־ (and best) לְבָנ֖וֹן (of Lebanon), כָּל־ (all) שֹׁ֥תֵי (those drinking) מָֽיִם׃ (the waters),

17 גַּם־ (also) הֵ֗ם (they) אִתּ֛וֹ (with it) יָרְד֥וּ (went down) שְׁא֖וֹלָה (to Sheol) אֶל־ (with) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חָ֑רֶב (the sword); וּזְרֹע֛וֹ (and its arm), יָשְׁב֥וּ (who had dwelt) בְצִלּ֖וֹ (in its shade) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (of nations).

18 אֶל־ (To) מִ֨י (whom) דָמִ֥יתָ (will you be compared) כָּ֛כָה (then) בְּכָב֥וֹד (in glory) וּבְגֹ֖דֶל (and in greatness) בַּעֲצֵי־ (among the trees in) עֵ֑דֶן (Eden)? וְהוּרַדְתָּ֨ (You also will be brought down) אֶת־ (with) עֲצֵי־ (the trees) עֵ֜דֶן (of Eden) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land); תַּחְתִּ֗ית (below) בְּת֨וֹךְ (in the midst) עֲרֵלִ֤ים (of the uncircumcised) תִּשְׁכַּב֙ (you will lie) אֶת־ (with) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חֶ֔רֶב (the sword). ה֤וּא (That is) פַרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) וְכָל־ (and all) הֲמוֹנֹ֔ה (his multitude), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ס (YHWH).
