The LORD Is My Strength

Of David.

David brings the burdens of his life before the Lord as Israel’s shepherd-king, drawing on his experience of danger, conflict, and dependence upon God.

2Sa 22:1 And David sang this song to the LORD on the day…
Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Psa 34:1 Of David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech,…

To You, O LORD, I call;

He turns directly to the covenant God of Israel, seeking help from the One who has bound Himself to His people.

Psa 30:8 To You, O LORD, I called, and I begged my Lord for mercy:
Psa 5:2 Attend to the sound of my cry, my King and my God,…
Psa 86:3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I call to You all day long.

be not deaf to me,

David pleads for God’s answer, knowing that human strength cannot secure the deliverance he needs.

Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
Psa 27:7 Hear, O LORD, my voice when I call; be merciful…
Psa 143:1 A Psalm of David. O LORD, hear my prayer.…

O my Rock.

The Lord is David’s refuge, strength, and sure defense when enemies and troubles threaten him.

Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…
Psa 62:2 He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress;…
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…

For if You remain silent,

God’s silence would leave David without direction, protection, or relief in his distress.

Psa 109:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O God of my praise,…
Psa 83:1 A song. A Psalm of Asaph. O God, be not silent;…
Psa 50:3 Our God approaches and will not be silent!…

I will be like those descending to the Pit.

David sees unanswered prayer as a path toward death, like those going down to the grave without rescue.

Psa 143:7 Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails.…
Psa 88:4 I am counted among those descending to the Pit.…
Psa 30:9 What gain is there in my bloodshed, in my descent to the Pit?…

Hear my cry for mercy

The psalmist appeals to the Lord’s compassion, knowing that deliverance depends on God’s gracious response rather than human strength or merit.

Psa 86:6 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and attend to my plea for mercy.
Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
Psa 6:9 The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD…

when I call to You for help,

In distress, he turns directly to the God who hears His people and rescues them from danger.

Psa 31:22 “In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from Your sight!””…
Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…

when I lift up my hands

With the customary posture of prayer and surrender, he openly seeks God’s aid.

Psa 63:4 So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name…
Psa 141:2 May my prayer be set before You like incense;…
1Ti 2:8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray…

toward Your holy sanctuary.

He prays in the direction of God’s appointed dwelling place, where the Lord made His presence known among Israel and where atonement and worship were centered.

Jon 2:4 At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight;…
Psa 5:7 But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your…
1Ki 8:29-30 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…

Do not drag me away with the wicked,

David asks God not to include him in the judgment reserved for those who openly reject His ways. He seeks deliverance from the fate of the ungodly and confidence that the Lord sees the difference between the righteous and the rebellious.

Psa 26:9 Do not take my soul away with sinners, or my life…
Psa 125:5 But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish…
Psa 1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,…

and with the workers of iniquity,

These are not merely people who stumble into sin but those who practice evil as a settled course. Their actions damage the life of the community and defy God’s righteous order.

Psa 5:5 The boastful cannot stand in Your presence;…
Psa 6:8 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity,…
Luk 13:27 And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know…

who speak peace to their neighbors

Their words present an appearance of goodwill and safety. In a society dependent on faithful relationships among families, clans, and neighbors, such deception was especially destructive.

Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…
Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…
Pro 26:25 When he speaks graciously, do not believe him…

while malice is in their hearts.

Beneath peaceful speech lies a deliberate intent to harm. David contrasts their hidden corruption with the integrity he seeks before God, who judges not only outward conduct but the motives of the heart.

Pro 26:24 A hateful man disguises himself with his speech…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.…

Repay them according to their deeds

David appeals to God as the righteous Judge, asking Him to deal with the wicked in accordance with their deliberate rebellion and violence. Their actions are not hidden from the Lord, and His judgment is neither arbitrary nor unjust.

Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”
Psa 62:12 and loving devotion to You, O Lord.…

and for their works of evil.

Their evil is expressed in persistent conduct that opposes God’s ways and harms others. David leaves vengeance in God’s hands rather than seeking to establish justice by his own power.

Col 3:25 Whoever does wrong will be repaid for his wrong…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…
Pro 1:31 So they will eat the fruit of their own way,…

Repay them for what their hands have done;

The hands represent the visible acts by which their sinful purposes have been carried out. Those responsible for wrongdoing are accountable for the harm they have caused.

Jer 25:14 For many nations and great kings will enslave them…
Isa 3:11 Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them!…
2Ti 4:14 Alexander the coppersmith did great harm to me.…

bring back on them what they deserve.

David asks that the consequences of their deeds return upon them under God’s righteous judgment. The request rests on the certainty that the Lord will ultimately distinguish between the wicked and those who trust Him.

Jer 32:19 One great in counsel and mighty in deed,…
Lam 3:64 You will pay them back what they deserve, O LORD,…
Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…

Since they show no regard for the works of the LORD

The wicked refuse to recognize God’s rule in creation, providence, and His dealings with mankind. Their rebellion is not merely ignorance but a settled disregard for the evidence of His power and righteousness.

Isa 5:12 At their feasts are the lyre and harp…
Psa 111:2 Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all…

or what His hands have done,

God’s hands portray His direct power at work in the world. Israel’s history, the order of creation, and God’s acts of deliverance all testify to His authority, yet those who oppose Him reject that testimony.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Psa 95:5 The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed…

He will tear them down

God will judge those who persist in defiance of Him. Their apparent security and influence will not withstand His righteous judgment.

Psa 52:5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin;…
Pro 15:25 The LORD tears down the house of the proud…

and never rebuild them.

The judgment described is decisive. Those who deliberately reject God’s works face ruin from which they cannot restore themselves.

Isa 25:2 Indeed, You have made the city a heap of rubble…
Ezk 26:14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place…

Blessed be the LORD,

David turns from pleading to praise, acknowledging the Lord as the One worthy of honor and thanksgiving.

Psa 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, …
Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel…
Psa 106:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

for He has heard

God’s answer assures David that his appeal has not been ignored.

Psa 66:19 But God has surely heard; He has attended…
Psa 116:1-2 I love the LORD, for He has heard my voice…
Psa 6:9 The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD…

my cry for mercy.

Having sought help in distress, David rests in the Lord’s compassion and faithful intervention.

Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
Psa 86:3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I call to You all day long.
Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…

The LORD is my strength and my shield;

David recognizes the LORD as the source of his power and his defense against enemies. God had preserved him through danger and opposition, not merely by giving courage but by actively guarding him.

Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;…

my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped.

David’s confidence rests in God’s faithfulness rather than his own resources. His help is presented as God’s answer to genuine reliance, delivering and sustaining him in his need.

Psa 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
Heb 13:6 So we say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper;”…

Therefore my heart rejoices,

God’s protection produces gladness rooted in His saving work. David’s joy follows the assurance that the LORD has heard and helped him.

Psa 13:5 But I have trusted in Your loving devotion;…
1Sa 2:1 At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD;…
Hab 3:18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice…

and I give thanks to Him with my song.

The response to God’s deliverance is public praise. Song was central to Israel’s worship and expressed gratitude for the LORD’s acts on behalf of His people.

Psa 69:30 I will praise God’s name in song and exalt Him…
Psa 147:7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music on the harp…
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…

The LORD is the strength of His people,

Israel’s security did not rest ultimately in its armies, fortifications, or kings, but in the covenant God who defended and sustained them. His strength supplied both deliverance in conflict and endurance in faithful obedience.

Psa 29:11 The LORD gives His people strength; the LORD blesses…
Psa 68:35 O God, You are awesome in Your sanctuary;…
Isa 40:29 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

a stronghold of salvation

Like a fortified refuge during invasion, the LORD preserves His people from those who oppose them. His salvation includes rescue from present danger and the sure hope of final deliverance.

Psa 27:1 Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation—…
Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…
2Sa 22:3 My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge…

for His anointed.

David likely speaks first of the king chosen and set apart to lead Israel. The words also anticipate the greater Anointed One, Jesus Christ (“Christ” means “Anointed One” in Greek), whose reign and saving work secure God’s people forever.

2Sa 22:51 Great salvation He brings to His king…
1Sa 2:10 Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.…
Psa 132:17 There I will make a horn grow for David;…

Save Your people

Israel belonged to the Lord by covenant, yet remained dependent on His deliverance from enemies, danger, and sin. The request recognizes that only God could preserve the nation He had chosen.

Hab 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people…
Deu 33:29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you?…
Isa 45:17 But Israel will be saved by the LORD…

and bless Your inheritance;

God had claimed Israel as His own possession and had given them the land promised to their fathers. The blessing sought includes His favor, provision, protection, and continued faithfulness to His covenant.

Psa 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,…
Deu 9:29 But they are Your people, Your inheritance…
Psa 74:2 Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago…

shepherd them

Like a shepherd guiding and guarding a flock, the Lord was asked to lead His people, provide for them, and defend them from those who would destroy them.

Mic 7:14 Shepherd with Your staff Your people, the flock…
Psa 80:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lilies…
Jer 31:10 Hear, O nations, the word of the LORD, and proclaim it…

and carry them forever.

The prayer looks beyond immediate rescue to God’s enduring care. Israel’s security rested not in its strength, but in the Lord’s continual support and faithfulness.

Isa 46:4 Even to your old age, I will be the same,…
Isa 63:9 In all their distress, He too was afflicted…
Deu 33:27 The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath…
