Witnesses against Israel

Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you,

Amos delivers God’s authoritative announcement of judgment to a people who had refused His commands.

Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…
Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,…

O children of Israel,

Israel remained the covenant nation descended from Jacob, yet the northern kingdom had turned to idolatry, corruption, and injustice.

Exo 19:3-6 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him…
Num 1:2 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel…

against the whole family

God holds the nation collectively accountable. Though Israel and Judah were politically divided, all the tribes shared the history and obligations of God’s covenant.

Jer 31:1 “At that time,” declares the LORD, “I will be the God”…
Ezk 37:11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…

that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

Their deliverance from Egyptian slavery had established them as God’s people. Their rebellion was especially grievous because it followed His faithful rescue and provision.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…

“Only you have I known from all the families of the earth;

God chose Israel from among all nations to belong to Him in a covenant relationship. Beginning with Abraham, He promised to make his descendants a great nation and to bless the world through them. Israel’s calling as a holy nation and kingdom of priests set them apart for obedience to God and service among the nations.

Deu 7:6-8 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…
Deu 4:37 Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants…
Exo 19:5-6 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…

therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”

Israel’s favored position did not excuse its sin; it made rebellion against God more serious. Having received His law, worship, and covenant promises, the nation was accountable for its idolatry, injustice, and unfaithfulness. God’s coming judgment would discipline His people for their sins while preserving His purpose to restore them.

Hos 4:9 And it shall be like people, like priest.…
Lev 26:28 then I will walk in fury against you, and I, even I…
Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…

Can two walk together

Walking together pictures a shared course of life and purpose. God had entered into covenant with Israel, calling the nation to live under His rule and reflect His holiness.

Ecc 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return…
1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,…
Gen 5:24 Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more…

without agreeing

Israel’s idolatry, injustice, and rebellion showed that the people were no longer living in submission to the covenant they had accepted. Their separation from God was not caused by any failure on His part, but by their refusal to obey Him.

Mat 18:19 Again, I tell you truly that if two of you on the earth…
1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…
Php 2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded,…

where to go?

Amos uses the question to explain why judgment was coming. God’s purposes for Israel had not changed, but the nation had chosen a path opposed to His will.

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not…
Psa 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psa 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;…

Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey?

Lions were familiar and feared predators in the land of Israel. Their roar signaled the presence of a hunter and the certainty of danger. Amos uses the image to show that God’s warning is not empty or arbitrary. Israel’s persistent rebellion had brought real guilt before the Lord, and the announced judgment had a just cause.

Psa 104:21 The young lions roar for their prey…
1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil…
Job 38:39 Can you hunt the prey for a lioness or satisfy the hunger…

Does a young lion growl in his den if he has caught nothing?

A young lion growls over prey already secured and brought to its den. The picture emphasizes that God’s judgment was not a distant possibility but a settled response to Israel’s sin. Amos’s message declared that the nation’s rebellion would bring the consequences God had warned of.

Job 38:40 when they crouch in their dens and lie in wait…
Ezk 19:3 She brought up one of her cubs, and he became a young lion.…
Nam 2:11-12 Where is the lions’ lair or the feeding ground…

Does a bird land in a snare where no bait has been set?

Hunters commonly used baited traps to catch birds, and the image assumes an obvious connection between the bait and the capture. Israel’s coming judgment was not arbitrary. Their persistent idolatry, injustice, and rebellion against the Lord had brought the consequences Amos announced.

Pro 7:23 until an arrow pierces his liver…
Pro 1:17 How futile it is to spread the net where any bird can see it…
Ecc 9:12 For surely no man knows his time: Like fish caught…

Does a trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?

A trap is triggered when its purpose is fulfilled. In the same way, the calamity approaching Israel would come because the nation had provoked God’s righteous judgment. The warning was meant to show that disaster would not be accidental or unexplained, but the result of Israel’s covenant unfaithfulness.

Psa 9:15-16 The nations have fallen into a pit of their making;…
Psa 35:8 May ruin befall them by surprise; may the net they hid…
Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone…

If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?

The shofar summoned the people for worship, assembly, battle, or warning. Its piercing sound demanded immediate attention, especially when danger threatened. As a city’s inhabitants would instinctively fear at an alarm, Israel should have recognized the warnings God sent through His prophets.

Zep 1:16 a day of horn blast and battle cry against the cities…
Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…
Ezk 33:4-5 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…

If calamity comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?

The disasters facing Israel were not accidents or merely the work of hostile nations. The LORD governed the events of history and was bringing judgment upon His covenant people for their persistent sin. He used calamity to expose rebellion and call the nation to account.

Lam 3:37-38 Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord…
Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;…
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing

God directs the course of nations and history according to His sovereign purpose. His judgments upon Israel and the surrounding nations were neither sudden nor arbitrary, but carried out in accordance with His covenant righteousness.

Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…
Psa 115:3 Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.
Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…

without revealing His plan

Before bringing judgment, God made His purposes known through warnings and calls to repentance. Israel had been given repeated opportunity to hear and respond before the coming disaster.

Gen 18:17 And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham…
Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows…
Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God,…

to His servants the prophets.

The prophets were God’s appointed messengers, entrusted with announcing His word to kings, priests, and the people. Amos’s ministry stood within this established pattern, declaring that the approaching judgment had been revealed by the Lord and would certainly come.

2Ki 21:10 And the LORD spoke through His servants, saying…
Jer 7:25 From the day your fathers came out of Egypt…
Zec 1:6 But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded…

The lion has roared—who will not fear?

A lion’s roar announced danger and commanded attention in the ancient world. Israel had ignored repeated warnings, but God’s judgment was now certain. The image portrays His holy power and the fear rightly produced when the sovereign Judge acts against sin.

Hos 11:10 They will walk after the LORD; He will roar like a lion.…
Jol 3:16 The LORD will roar from Zion and raise His voice…
Amo 1:2 He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice…

The Lord GOD has spoken—who will not prophesy?

Amos did not speak from personal ambition or political opinion. God had given him a message for Israel, and he was bound to deliver it despite opposition. The Lord’s authority over His covenant people made silence impossible.

Amo 7:15 But the LORD took me from following the flock…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…
Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…

Proclaim to the citadels of Ashdod and to the citadels of Egypt:

Ashdod, a leading Philistine city, and Egypt, Israel’s powerful southern neighbor, were summoned as witnesses. Their fortified centers represent rulers and peoples who could observe the condition of Samaria. Even pagan nations would recognize the corruption that had overtaken Israel.

Jol 3:9-12 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war;…
Zep 2:4-7 For Gaza will be abandoned, and Ashkelon…
Isa 19:1-4 This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides…

“Assemble on the mountains of Samaria;

Samaria, capital of the Northern Kingdom, stood amid surrounding hills that offered a clear view of the city. Foreign witnesses were called to look upon the nation’s public sins and the conditions within its seat of power.

Jer 31:5 Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria;…
Mic 1:6-7 Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble…
2Ki 17:5-6 Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land,…

see the great unrest in the city

Disorder marked Samaria’s life. Political instability, violence, and the breakdown of justice revealed a people who had abandoned the Lord’s covenant.

Psa 55:9-11 O Lord, confuse and confound their speech…
Ezk 7:23-24 Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes…
Nam 3:1-4 Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder…

and the acts of oppression in her midst.”

The strong exploited the weak, and those with authority used their position for gain rather than justice. Samaria’s leaders and citizens had allowed oppression to become normal, bringing God’s judgment upon the nation.

Mic 2:1-2 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds…
Isa 10:1-2 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes…
Ezk 22:6-7 See how every prince of Israel within you has used his power…

“For they know not how to do right,”

Israel’s persistent idolatry, injustice, and rejection of God’s law had corrupted the nation’s moral judgment. Those entrusted with leadership no longer practiced justice or recognized their responsibility before the Lord.

Jer 4:22 For My people are fools; they have not known Me.…
Isa 59:8 The way of peace they have not known…
Rom 3:12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless;…

declares the LORD.

God Himself testifies against His people. Their conduct was not hidden from Him, and His judgment rested on His perfect knowledge and authority.

Jer 1:16 I will pronounce My judgments against them…
Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

“They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”

The fortified cities, centers of political power and wealth, had become places where oppression and plunder were accumulated. Israel’s rulers secured their prosperity through wrongdoing, bringing guilt upon the nation and preparing it for the judgment God would send.

Mic 3:10 who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with iniquity.
Hab 2:12 Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed…
Nam 3:1 Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder…

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:

God announces His own judgment against Israel, leaving no doubt that the warning carries divine authority. Israel’s covenant unfaithfulness had brought the nation to the point of reckoning.

Mic 2:3 Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am planning against…
Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says…
Ezk 7:2 “O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says…

“An enemy will surround the land;

An invading army would encircle Israel, cutting off escape and exposing the nation’s helplessness. Assyria later carried out this judgment through its campaigns against the northern kingdom.

Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…
Jer 6:3 Shepherds and their flocks will come against her;…
2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…

he will pull down your strongholds

The defenses in which Israel trusted would not withstand God’s appointed judgment. Fortified cities, military power, and human resources could not preserve a people who had abandoned obedience to Him.

Pro 21:22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty…
Mic 5:11 I will remove the cities of your land…
2Ki 25:10 And the whole army of the Chaldeans under…

and plunder your citadels.”

Israel’s chief cities and storehouses would be looted, bringing military defeat and the loss of national wealth. What had appeared secure would be stripped away by the conqueror.

Ezk 26:12 They will plunder your wealth and pillage your merchandise.…
Jer 15:13 Your wealth and your treasures I will give up as plunder,…
2Ki 24:13 As the LORD had declared, Nebuchadnezzar also carried off…

This is what the LORD says:

Amos delivers God’s own verdict against Israel, leaving no doubt that the coming judgment carries divine authority.

Jer 2:2 “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem……
Ezk 13:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the foolish prophets…
Hag 1:2 this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say,…

“As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear,

A shepherd might recover such remains as proof that a sheep had been killed by a predator. The picture is not of a successful rescue but of near-total loss.

1Sa 17:34-35 David replied, “Your servant has been tending…
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…
Psa 22:21 Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns…

so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria will be rescued

Samaria, the wealthy capital of the Northern Kingdom, would not escape the Assyrian conquest. Only a small remnant of Israel would survive the destruction and exile.

2Ki 17:6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria…
Mic 2:12 I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; …
Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors…

having just the corner of a bed or the cushion of a couch.

The survivors would be like scraps left from the furnishings of the affluent. Israel’s comfort, wealth, and confidence would be stripped away, exposing the emptiness of its security.

Amo 6:4 You lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and lounge…
Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…
Pro 7:16-17 I have decked my bed with coverings, …

Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,

God summons witnesses to bring His covenant charges against Israel. Though chosen as Jacob’s descendants, the nation had turned from the Lord’s commands through idolatry, injustice, and self-serving worship.

Deu 31:19 Now therefore, write down for yourselves this song…
Mic 3:8 As for me, however, I am filled with power by the Spirit…
Isa 58:1 Cry aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice…

declares the Lord GOD,

Amos speaks with divine authority, not personal opinion. Israel’s coming judgment rests on the righteous decree of the covenant God to whom the nation was accountable.

Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 16:48 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…

the God of Hosts.

The Lord commands all heavenly powers and governs every force of creation. Israel could not escape the judgment of the God who possessed both the authority and power to carry out His sentence.

Psa 59:5 O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself…
Psa 80:4 O LORD God of Hosts, how long will Your anger smolder…
Psa 84:8 O LORD God of Hosts, hear my prayer; give ear…

On the day I punish Israel for their transgressions,

God announces a definite day of judgment against the Northern Kingdom for its persistent covenant rebellion. Israel had embraced idolatry, corrupted worship, and injustice toward the vulnerable, despite the Lord’s repeated warnings.

Hos 9:7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution…
Isa 10:3 What will you do on the day of reckoning…
2Ki 17:7 All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned…

I will visit destruction on the altars of Bethel;

Bethel had become a chief center of Israel’s false worship after Jeroboam established a golden calf there. What had once been associated with worship of the Lord was turned into a rival sanctuary, and its altars stood as evidence of the nation’s rejection of God’s commands.

1Ki 13:2 And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD,…
2Ki 23:15 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel,…
Hos 10:8 The high places of Aven will be destroyed—…

the horns of the altar will be cut off,

The horns represented the altar’s strength and sacred status, and people sometimes grasped them when seeking refuge. Their removal shows that Bethel’s altar could provide neither protection nor mercy. God would expose its worship as empty and powerless.

1Ki 1:50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went…
1Ki 2:28 When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah…
Jer 17:1 “The sin of Judah is written with an iron stylus,…

and they will fall to the ground.

The destruction would be complete. Israel’s religious system, built on disobedience and false devotion, would collapse under God’s judgment.

1Ki 13:5 And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out…
Ezk 6:4 Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars…
Hos 10:2 Their hearts are devious; now they must bear their guilt.…

I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house;

Israel’s wealthy elite maintained seasonal residences, displaying comfort and excess amid widespread oppression of the poor. God’s judgment would reach the homes that represented their self-indulgence and disregard for righteousness.

Jer 36:22 Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting…
2Ki 25:9 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…
Jer 39:8 The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king…

the houses of ivory will also perish,

Ivory ornamentation marked the extraordinary wealth of Samaria’s ruling class. Excavations have uncovered ivory furnishings and inlays from the city, confirming the luxury Amos describes. Such splendor would not protect its owners when judgment came.

1Ki 22:39 As for the rest of the acts of Ahab, along with…
Psa 45:8 All your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes…
1Ki 10:18 Additionally, the king made a great throne of ivory…

and the great houses will come to an end,”

The destruction would extend to the largest estates and the influential families who occupied them. Their wealth, status, and security would collapse with the fall of the Northern Kingdom under Assyria.

Isa 5:9 I heard the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses…
Zep 1:13 Their wealth will be plundered and their houses laid waste.…
Jer 6:12 Their houses will be turned over to others,…

declares the LORD.

The coming judgment rested on the authority of God Himself. Amos announced not a human warning but the certain sentence of the LORD.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
