2 “Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: ‘You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a monster in the seas. You thrash about in your rivers, churning up the waters with your feet and muddying the streams.’ “Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: “You consider yourself a lion of the nations, but you are like a dragon in the seas; you burst forth in your rivers, trouble the waters with your feet, and foul their rivers. Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou <i>art</i> as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers. “Son of man, take up a song of mourning over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him, ‘You compared yourself to a young lion of the nations, Yet you are like the monster in the seas; And you burst forth in your rivers And muddied the waters with your feet And fouled their rivers.’” “Son of man, take up a lament concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: “’You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a monster in the seas thrashing about in your streams, churning the water with your feet and muddying the streams.
3 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will spread My net over you with a company of many peoples, and they will draw you up in My net. Thus says the Lord GOD: I will throw my net over you with a host of many peoples, and they will haul you up in my dragnet. Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many people; and they shall bring thee up in my net. This is what the Lord GOD says: “Now I will spread My net over you With a contingent of many peoples, And they will lift you up in My net. “’This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “’With a great throng of people I will cast my net over you, and they will haul you up in my net.
4 I will abandon you on the land and hurl you into the open field. I will cause all the birds of the air to settle upon you, and all the beasts of the earth to eat their fill of you. And I will cast you on the ground; on the open field I will fling you, and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you, and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you. Then will I leave thee upon the land, I will cast thee forth upon the open field, and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee, and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee. “I will leave you on the land; I will hurl you on the open field. And I will cause all the birds of the sky to nest on you, And I will satisfy the animals of the whole earth with you. I will throw you on the land and hurl you on the open field. I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you and all the animals of the wild gorge themselves on you.
5 I will put your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains. I will strew your flesh upon the mountains and fill the valleys with your carcass. And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with thy height. “I will lay your flesh on the mountains And fill the valleys with your refuse. I will spread your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains.
6 I will drench the land with the flow of your blood, all the way to the mountains— the ravines will be filled. I will drench the land even to the mountains with your flowing blood, and the ravines will be full of you. I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, <i>even</i> to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee. “I will also make the land drink the discharge of your blood As far as the mountains, And the ravines will be full of you. I will drench the land with your flowing blood all the way to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with your flesh.
7 When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light. When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens and make their stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light. And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. “And when <i>I</i> extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud And the moon will not give its light. When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
8 All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness upon your land,’ declares the Lord GOD. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and put darkness on your land, declares the Lord GOD. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD. “All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you And will set darkness on your land,” Declares the Lord GOD. All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you; I will bring darkness over your land, declares the Sovereign LORD.
9 ‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know. “I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known. “I will also trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring your destruction among the nations, into lands which you have not known. I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring about your destruction among the nations, among lands you have not known.
10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled over you, and their kings will shudder in horror because of you when I brandish My sword before them. On the day of your downfall each of them will tremble every moment for his life.’ I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when I brandish my sword before them. They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall. Yea, I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at <i>every</i> moment, every man for his own life, in the day of thy fall. And I will make many peoples appalled at you, and their kings will be horribly afraid of you when I brandish My sword before them; and they will tremble again and again, every person for his own life, on the day of your fall.” I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you, and their kings will shudder with horror because of you when I brandish my sword before them. On the day of your downfall each of them will tremble every moment for his life.
11 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you! “For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. For thus saith the Lord GOD; The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee. For the Lord GOD says this: “The sword of the king of Babylon will attack you. “’For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “’The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you.
12 I will make your hordes fall by the swords of the mighty, the most ruthless of all nations. They will ravage the pride of Egypt and all her multitudes will be destroyed. I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them most ruthless of nations. “They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt, and all its multitude shall perish. By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed. By the swords of the warriors I will make your multitude fall; all of them are tyrants of the nations, And they will devastate the pride of Egypt, And all its multitude will be destroyed. I will cause your hordes to fall by the swords of mighty men— the most ruthless of all nations. They will shatter the pride of Egypt, and all her hordes will be overthrown.
13 I will slaughter all her cattle beside the abundant waters. No human foot will muddy them again, and no cattle hooves will disturb them. I will destroy all its beasts from beside many waters; and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore, nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them. I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters; neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more, nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them. “I will also eliminate all its cattle from beside many waters; And a human foot will not muddy them anymore, And the hoofs of animals will not muddy them. I will destroy all her cattle from beside abundant waters no longer to be stirred by the foot of man or muddied by the hooves of cattle.
14 Then I will let her waters settle and will make her rivers flow like oil,’ declares the Lord GOD. Then I will make their waters clear, and cause their rivers to run like oil, declares the Lord GOD. Then will I make their waters deep, and cause their rivers to run like oil, saith the Lord GOD. “Then I will make their waters settle, And make their rivers run like oil,” Declares the Lord GOD. Then I will let her waters settle and make her streams flow like oil, declares the Sovereign LORD.
15 ‘When I make the land of Egypt a desolation and empty it of all that filled it, when I strike down all who live there, then they will know that I am the LORD.’ When I make the land of Egypt desolate, and when the land is desolate of all that fills it, when I strike down all who dwell in it, then they will know that I am the LORD. When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate, and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full, when I shall smite all them that dwell therein, then shall they know that I <i>am</i> the LORD. “When I make the land of Egypt a desolation, And the land is destitute of that which filled it, When I strike all those who live in it, Then they shall know that I am the LORD. When I make Egypt desolate and strip the land of everything in it, when I strike down all who live there, then they will know that I am the LORD.’
16 This is the lament they will chant for her; the daughters of the nations will chant it. Over Egypt and all her multitudes they will chant it, declares the Lord GOD.” This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord GOD.” This <i>is</i> the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her: the daughters of the nations shall lament her: they shall lament for her, <i>even</i> for Egypt, and for all her multitude, saith the Lord GOD. This is a song of mourning, and they shall sing it. The daughters of the nations shall sing it. Over Egypt and over all her hordes they shall sing it,” declares the Lord GOD. “This is the lament they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; for Egypt and all her hordes they will chant it, declares the Sovereign LORD.”
17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth <i>day</i> of the month, <i>that</i> the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
18 “Son of man, wail for the multitudes of Egypt, and consign her and the daughters of the mighty nations to the depths of the earth with those who descend to the Pit: “Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit: Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, <i>even</i> her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit. “Son of man, lament for the hordes of Egypt and bring it down, her and the daughters of the mighty nations, to the netherworld, with those who go down to the pit; “Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit.
19 Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be placed with the uncircumcised! ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’ Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised. ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and make your bed with the uncircumcised.’ Say to them, ‘Are you more favored than others? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised.’
20 They will fall among those slain by the sword. The sword is appointed! Let them drag her away along with all her multitudes. They shall fall amid those who are slain by the sword. Egypt is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and all her multitudes. They shall fall in the midst of <i>them that are</i> slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes. They shall fall in the midst of those who are killed by the sword. She is turned over to the sword; they have dragged her and all her hordes away. They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is drawn; let her be dragged off with all her hordes.
21 Mighty chiefs will speak from the midst of Sheol about Egypt and her allies: ‘They have come down and lie with the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.’ The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’ The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword. The strong among the mighty ones shall speak of him <i>and</i> his helpers from the midst of Sheol: ‘They have gone down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, killed by the sword.’ From within the realm of the dead the mighty leaders will say of Egypt and her allies, ‘They have come down and they lie with the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.’
22 Assyria is there with her whole company; her graves are all around her. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword. “Assyria is there, and all her company, its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, Asshur <i>is</i> there and all her company: his graves <i>are</i> about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword: “Assyria is there and all her company; her graves are all around her. All of them killed, fallen by the sword, “Assyria is there with her whole army; she is surrounded by the graves of all her slain, all who have fallen by the sword.
23 Her graves are set in the depths of the Pit, and her company is all around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword— those who once spread terror in the land of the living. whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living. Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living. whose graves are set in the remotest parts of the pit, and her company is all around her grave. 24 Elam is there with all her multitudes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword— those who went down uncircumcised to the earth below, who once spread their terror in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit. “Elam is there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. There <i>is</i> Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit. “Elam is there and all her hordes around her grave; all of them killed, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised to the lower parts of the earth, who inflicted their terror on the land of the living, and bore their disgrace with those who go down to the pit. “Elam is there, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword. All who had spread terror in the land of the living went down uncircumcised to the earth below. They bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
25 Among the slain they prepare a resting place for Elam with all her hordes, with her graves all around her. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, although their terror was once spread in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit. They are placed among the slain. They have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain. They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves <i>are</i> round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of <i>them that be</i> slain. They have made a bed for her among the slain with all her hordes. Her graves are around it, they are all uncircumcised, killed by the sword (although their terror was inflicted on the land of the living), and they bore their disgrace with those who go down to the pit; they were put in the midst of the slain. 26 Meshech and Tubal are there with all their multitudes, with their graves all around them. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, because they spread their terror in the land of the living. “Meshech-Tubal is there, and all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. There <i>is</i> Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves <i>are</i> round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living. “Meshech, Tubal, and all their hordes are there; their graves surround them. And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. And they shall not lie with the mighty <i>that are</i> fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though <i>they were</i> the terror of the mighty in the land of the living. Nor do they lie beside the fallen heroes of the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war and whose swords were placed under their heads; but the punishment for their wrongdoing rested on their bones, though the terror of <i>these</i> heroes <i>was once</i> in the land of the living. But they do not lie with the fallen warriors of old, who went down to the realm of the dead with their weapons of war—their swords placed under their heads and their shields resting on their bones—though these warriors also had terrorized the land of the living.
28 But you too will be shattered and lie down among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. But as for you, you shall be broken and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword. Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with <i>them that are</i> slain with the sword. But in the midst of the uncircumcised you will be broken and lie with those killed by the sword. “You too, Pharaoh, will be broken and will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.
29 Edom is there, and all her kings and princes, who despite their might are laid among those slain by the sword. They lie down with the uncircumcised, with those who descend to the Pit. “Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit. There <i>is</i> Edom, her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by <i>them that were</i> slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit. “There <i>also is</i> Edom, its kings and all its princes, who despite <i>all</i> their might are laid with those killed by the sword; they will lie with the uncircumcised and with those who go down to the pit. “Edom is there, her kings and all her princes; despite their power, they are laid with those killed by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
30 All the leaders of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down in disgrace with the slain, despite the terror of their might. They lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bear their shame with those who descend to the Pit. “The princes of the north are there, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. There <i>be</i> the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with <i>them that be</i> slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit. “There <i>also are</i> the chiefs of the north, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who in <i>spite of</i> the terror <i>resulting</i> from their might, in shame went down with the slain. So they lay down uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bore their disgrace with those who go down to the pit. “All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down with the slain in disgrace despite the terror caused by their power. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
31 Pharaoh will see them and be comforted over all his multitude— Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. “When Pharaoh sees them, he will be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, <i>even</i> Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD. “These Pharaoh will see, and he will find consolation regarding all his hordes killed by the sword, Pharaoh and all his army,” declares the Lord GOD. “Pharaoh—he and all his army—will see them and he will be consoled for all his hordes that were killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign LORD.
32 For I will spread My terror in the land of the living, so that Pharaoh and all his multitude will be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD.” For I spread terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.” For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with <i>them that are</i> slain with the sword, <i>even</i> Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD. “Though I inflicted the terror of him on the land of the living, yet he will be laid to rest among <i>the</i> uncircumcised <i>along</i> with those killed by the sword, Pharaoh and all his hordes,” declares the Lord GOD. Although I had him spread terror in the land of the living, Pharaoh and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign LORD.”
